While Declan O'Sullivan did very well when he came on I just about expect Brosnan to hold his place for the final. Who receives the cup if Declan comes on during the game? Declan or Gooch? If they both go up to receive it where does the cup go on Monday night if we win? Would prefer if this things were sorted out just in case we win. Dont want a repeat of 2001 (brosnan captain) and even 1997.

same 15 will start the next day, with gooch as captain. while brosnan was not at this best, he did ok and it looked like he was sick or carrying an injury. on the plus side, what did gary spillane do? very little, so maybe eoin was asked to sacfice his normal game to keep spillane quite.

Whoever is named capitan when the team is picked will be the captain...end of story.

I could be wrong, but I'm fairly sure that even if Declan comes on as a sub he will assume the captaincy and will receive Sam if we win. Likewise if Bryan Sheehan is the only Sth Kerry player brought on then he becomes the captain.

I couldn't care less if Sam is sent to Timbuktu after the match or if Billy Morgan is given the captains armband once we win that final. What counts is that we are playing as a team, and the fans are behind them.
I reckon the same team MUST start the final, and that Brosnan will be getting a lot of attention for the management to wake him up again.

It doesn't matter that Declan was captain last year or that Gooch is the captain when he's not playing. The rules are that if a member of the county championship winning team is on the Kerry team at any stage during the match they assume the captaincy. I don't neccessarily agree with it but that's the process that the county board have agreed on and it won't be changed mid-season.

Not sure you are 100% right there Hatchet. I think it is actually up to the CC winners - Eoin was not automatically given the captaincy in 01, the Crokes left it with Seamus until the semi-final. I don't think it is an automatic when you come on to the pitch unless the South Kerry board insist on that. The South Kerry board can, if they choose, endorse Gooch and he will remain capitan. Question is...will they?
And, more importantly...do we really want to be discussing this for the next 4 weeks?

i think admin should get an answer on this and clear it up and then lock the thread, this crack will only side track things. Gooch should remain captain and thats that. the same team will start the next day, barring injuries of course, there is no way that the man that goes for the toss would then loose the captaincy during the game. it happened to mickey ned and spillane, but that cos mickey ned was in hospital!

Homerj boy will you settle down. This is a forum, not a classroom. If we want to discuss the capaincy then we can discuss it.
If Dec comes on he will more than likely accept the trophy jointly with Gooch. But we've won nothing yet.

I raised this issue because i think it should be sorted out asap so we don't get arguements like above which could unsettle the team!

The captaincy is resolved as such: According to GAA rules and bylaws the captain has to start the game. A substitute cannot be captain. An the captaincy doesnt change over when declan comes on the pitch either. Even in socer if the club captain comes on a game they dont give him the armband.. Gooch is captain and thats that. However I'd say that more than likely if kerry win sam it will be a joint presentation to the gooch and declan

It would be fitting for a joint presentation considering the rumblings in camp earlier in the year. We'd have gone full circle from losing to tyrone in final, to cork in the munster, to falling out, to beating armagh, then cork, then (dublin) opps i mean Mayo of course. then joint presentation.Total recovery. Was there trouble in 97 after the final about Mike Hassetts medal or am I wrong on this.It better to sort it out now but Im sure they will.

The medal situation was sorted when central council voted that all 30 squad members get a medal. Kerry have had a very consistant squad since the Munster final.

Did Sheehan get replaced on the panel for yesterday or did they just name 29 players?

Kerry have only named 29 players in the past and this week they had only named 28

they could always auction off the 30th medal and put the money from it into the holiday fund

Nothing won yet i know but a joint Presentation would be nice considering its only lately that the gooch has become captain. (if we beat Mayo of course i know!)

I would think that Colm and Declan should both accept the Sam Maguire as they both will have captained Kerry in 4 Championship matches during the year

I agree with Kerrygold.. We haven't even won Munster this year. But that said the way we pick the Captain in Kerry has always been an issue. The players shouldn't have to deal with all this messing around every year - the Manager should pick his captain - end of story..

I totaly agree with elvis!! its an oLd system that needs to be changed!! Kerry are as far as i know only two counties left that use it!! its very unfair on gooch and declan!!!

I can't believe we are even having this thread. lets put all of our efforts into winning the All Ireland first and then we can worry about it. If we lose the AI this will not be an issue and we will become the laughing stock

The Captaincy of Kerry is not a big issue. We have leaders all over the field and a wealth of experience. All the captain does is go up for the toss and collect the trophy (hopefully).

I think you must have a typo in there eastciarri........!!!!! Opps, good spot Mac Danger and of course it will be Mayo. Yes its only IF we beat Mayo and YES its not a huge issue. And dont tell me you cant believe we're having this thread when you just left a message on it and put it up to the top again. If you dont like it, dont look at it. Its a free country with free speech for all (unless admin deletes it ). Its hardly too early to be talking about it either considering we're in the final. Do you want to wait till after we win (again IF we win for you pedantic people). There will be 5 pages of people going, O we should have done this, , that way was all wrong. So Jack will sort it out and we can go back to important things like Ray Silke talking crap, Rashers ex and Colm O' Rourke sons who class for a minor but who still couldnt stop mighty roscommon. And for the guy who said the captain only goes up for the toss and receives the cup, we'll send up the rose of tralee. Then every ones happy.

Does it REALLY matter who collects the sam?? It'll be in Killarney on Monday night either way surely and everyone will be inside in the Tatler. Then a trip down to the glen for the green room. Aaaaargh.......... I can nearly taste it now!!! Sure wont SAM travel around the county and give us all a chance to say hello again and welcome home!!!
