Kerry 1-15. Tipp 1-10. HT 0-5. 0-4
They didn’t come out in droves to see this affair. There was a smattering of people in the stand with possibly a little more on the terrace. In spite of playing with a strong breeze in the first half Kerry were abysmal. Abysmal maybe too strong a word but only marginally so. Tipp opened up our back line on several occasions forcing Michael Tansley to make two marvelous saves. We created one goal opportunity but Tomas Kennedy telegraphed his intention and his kick was smothered . Somebody next to me shouted foot block but I don’t think that was the case..
It was disappointing that we had to send for the heavyweights so early in the second half- Luke, Cormac Dillon and Eddie Healy. Sadly they were needed and they responded. Essentially Like and Cormac transformed our attacking unit and Eddie gave us solidity at midfield where Cathal Brosnan was unable to give assistance to Robert Stack. Robert is solid citizen but he would need to fast track his movements a little.
Scores began to flow more freely and Luke in classic fashion set up Tomas Kennedy for a fine goal which was the winning of the match. Still, Tipp stubbornly refused to lie down. They were able to win plenty of possession but some poor shooting upscuttled them. They finished with a fine goal from their corner forward , who too easily was allowed to slalom in along the end line.
Paddy Lane was removed at half time after receiving a paltry supply of ball, most of which was over hit with the breeze. That historically has been the lot of the corner forward!
Against Cork, our three half forwards were substituted. Tonight , two of them were removed. Odhran Ferris remained. He improved in the second half on the wing . As I said after the Cork game, Tomas will have to have a serious look at this line.
I am sure the Kerry hurling manager was hoping that Luke Crowley would not have been needed tonight, as we all were, but needed he was. It would be utter folly not to start him against Cork. I presume the hurlers are out at the weekend. I am not sure how this is going to pan out.
I believe Cork walloped Clare tonight. I suspect they are much better than they appeared against us. Kerry will need to improve exponentially ,on the evidence of our first half display, to repeat last week’s victory. All a man can do is hope.

Thanks for the report Vet. Great work as ever.
I watched back a bit of the Cork v Clare game last night. In contrast to our lads, the players who came in for Cork really looked the part, so they are going to be a totally different proposition next week. Their forward line is looking very potent. Based on what we saw last night we need to tighten up massively at the back.

Cork and Meath/Louth the 3 teams standing in kerrys way of an all ireland final. theres no excuses now, this team simply has to deliver now.

Would it not have been possible to arrange the Kerry v Cork minor & U20 matches as a double header on maybe Saturday!
Seems wrong to have these 2 matches, same counties taking part, on consecutive evenings in the same pitch!

Agree, we need to be in the final, but I can’t see us winning it, the team seem to lack quality in depth, ulster and Connaught look strong from what I have seen, expect winners from that side. But hopefully we will see an improvement against cork the next night, not a great team either.

True and there’s also the fact that several of the players have exams up to around 5pm in Cork the evening of Under 20 game which is awfully unfair on them. A Saturday game would be more sensible if you are going to play in middle of college exams.

Excellent display from Kerry tonight - disciplined in defence, some outstanding performances, Healy & Stack played some amount of ball - forwards probably played more as individuals than a team but churlish to be critical tonight.
Heartwarming stuff!
I am often critical of referees but thought ref tonight was excellent- no dramatics, decisive & up with the play.

Great win ! There is a lot to like about this team all over the park. Also I think Tomas is growing into the role they look a well conditioned and coached team. I was at the game two weeks ago and felt the same be a good chance vs meath in a week or so time !

Good performance. They seem to have a bit of talent in the forwards, Luke Crowley, Daniel Kirby, Cormac Dillon very good on the frees. And a nice spread of scoring, I think all the starting forwards scored.
Not super-secure at the back, Cork probably a bit unlucky not to convert any of about 4 good goal-chances. Their tackling could be a bit tougher, seemed to let Cork players run past them kind of easily.
They play a nice attacking brand of football, wouldn't mind seeing a bit of the pace they play with in the seniors!

How many times was Luke Crowley tackled around the neck?. We might get 3 or 4 seniors out of this group of players - which would be a good return.

Beautiful evening at ASP. Thought there might have been a few more there but I suppose the minors and seniors both playing this week had an impact there.
Charlie Keating has some engine, outstanding tonight. Plenty of good performances with stuff to work on too. A little more cohesion needed up front maybe. Crowley, great talent but seems to be just playing his own game at times. Needlessly turned over ball on several occasions, trying to do it all himself despite having easy options. I'm sure Tomás will be having a word.
Anyway great win, congrats to all, not least Dara O'Callaghan with an incredible 3rd Munster medal at this level.

I was impressed by our defence. Kept several Cork goal chances out with blocking and a hand in and forced a lot of wides by tigerish defending. Well coached all over and have a few good prospects for seniors. Time will tell.

A great win. Well-done, this was always going to be their first judgement day and they passed it superbly.
Now, one game away from an all Ireland final, we need to win this but Meath are a very good team and we are really up against it.

Absolutely their best performance so far.
Some great defending and blocks.
Cracking goal.
Meath up next,
Two lads from my own club in the Meath set up.
They had a good win over Louth.
Team is backboned by thd all ireland minor win in 2022.

Three Cork lads set about him as he was tying his laces before the throw-in. No official saw anything of course.

Look it’s a good win not a great cork team don’t think but we looked like well coached team except the usual turnovers and trying to do too much. We have a very young team not sure if we can beat Meath but wait and see have to take care of them there is a few lads there for the future no doubt. It’s a pity the junior competition was scrapped it would be something to keep them together as a lot of them will be forgotten about even though most of them are young enough for next year.

100% the best kerry performance to date, there was not much suppose to be between the teams, but Kerry dominated, especially on the efficiency in scoring. Keating was flying in defence, cork had goal chances, thought they over played the ball , but congrats to Kerry.
A busy schedule ahead, out again in 10 days, not sure the rights or wrongs of young Crowley playing both hurling and football over the space of a few days, he was definetly slow out of the blocks last night, can this continue over the next few weeks, but a super direct player, hope they mind him and make the right decisions for him.

Who would ye pick as future seniors? Rob Stack, Luke Crowley mayne Luke Crowley and Cian Lynch are final year u20s, I can see them both being involved with the Seniors next year. Tomás Kennedy, Gearóid Evans and Daniel Kirby are just out of minor and are doing very well so there’s good potential there. Eddie Healy the standout of the year in between.

A gorgeous Wednesday evening in ASP in contrast to the biting cold of the previous evening for the minor match. I was a little apprehensive as a few of my contacts across the border rated this Cork team very highly, principally because of a few gems in their forward line- Hugh O'Connor, Darragh Sheedy and Ed Myers.
We had the wind in the first half and made reasonable use of it. But Cork were a huge threat with their midfielders on top early on. Indeed they created a couple of goal chances but classic last ditch tackling by our defence kept our goal virginal. Noteworthy, as the game advanced we conquered the midfield area where both Rob Stack and Eddie Healy had massive games. It was uncertain whether our five point lead at the break would be sufficient against the strong wind, particularly if Cork snatched a goal which they occasionally threatened, as already stated. It was high class football in any case.
Nobody could have foretold the Kerry blitzkrieg in the first five or ten minutes of the second half . A goal and three points, a crippling blow to the Cork solar plexus. There could be no salvation after that dawn raid. To Cork's credit, and a testament to their ability and fortitude, they refused to fold the tent, giving as much if not more than they got to the finish. But the disparity in the score line was too great, unless they registered a goal which a near impregnable Kerry defence refused to concede.
Overall, it was a hugely enjoyable game with an abundance of quality football and individual displays on view. From a Kerry standpoint, while not flawless but few teams are, it was a terrific display. Off the top of my head, I cannot think of any Kerry player who struggled. One cannot ask for more from any team.
There were too many great individual displays to comment on them all but I will reference a few incidents/players. The first fellow I want to mention is Gearoid Evans. A tall, gangly young boy without a pick of flesh. He doesn't look a footballer at all. He is.
Charlie Keating from Dr. Crokes at wing back. An indefatigable, human dynamo. He took an unmerciful wallop in the first half but kept coming back ravenously for more. Should have a future.
Then there is Luke Crowley. He was one of the most influential players on the pitch, a perpetual torment to Cork. In view of those comments it may be ungracious to issue a critical note. I feel it would be more profitable for the team if, on occasions at least, Luke didn't dwell on the ball too long. Give and go as Bill Shankly used to say. Referees tend to be unsympathetic in situations like that, as indeed the referee was last night , blithely waving play on when Luke was blatantly fouled in at least two instances. A further downside of that style of play is it gives opponents opportunities for landing a few blows below the belt.
Still with Luke, I need to get this off my chest. I am not at all happy with his current work load. Eventually, to use a phrase common in the athletics field, he is going to hit a wall. Consequently, he will be little use to either team or to himself. What is to be done? The invidious suggestion will have to be made. Luke, choose one sport for the moment, at the top level anyway. In that way, one team will get the optimal performance from him and of course benefit will accrue to Luke himself as well, freshness and reduced likelihood of injury for example. An unpleasant choice no doubt but life is full of difficult choices.
Disconcertingly, both Dara O'Callaghan and Eddie Healy limped off the field towards the end.
Finally, I will indulge myself for a minute or two. Tomas Kennedy made a stupendous catch in front of me in the second half, gracefully soaring into the ether to bring it down. It is not often in games nowadays that a deed sets my mind rolling back to my childhood days when Mick O'Connell performed such feats regularly. In fairness to the Strand Road man, he was aware of the significance of the moment because he immediately turned around and said " that one was for you Veteran".

This is an effective way to unsettle structured defences, you beat one man, another has to come across. I was impressed with Crowley's ability to ride tackles, I suppose it's a combination of strength, balance, and skill. Of course, as said, he should've got better protection from the referee, but it did win some frees, and set up some other scores.

Awesome as the yanks would say, that MOTM could be one of so many says it all but being from Lisselton I'll have to divide it between my Beal and Emmets contenders. Crowley will draw serious injury on himself and is also a candidate for burnout from over trying alone. Stil I don't think he should have to drop a code just yet - will footballers play later into the season? Those who were there know how good it was, those who weren't need to go to tg4 - 2 fieldings on a par with Mick O'Connell, 2 blockdowns as good as anyone ever saw, and Cork were good, could have got closer in dying minutes, massive effort by both sides all the way, Tomas has done great work here. Surely a few will graduate - that NK pairing look good, Stack has a back on him like a horse and the general physique points to the prospect of a vintage crop? What an evening.

Definitely feel like Crowley will be one to graduate to the seniors. Being that powerful and confident in your power would be huge to bring off the bench. While he does take a lot out of the ball, he wins countless frees from that exact persistence. Healy the next one if I had to pick a player out. Keating seems to have a great engine and speed too. I was unsure of Kennedy in the first 2 games but he has improved as he has gone on. Lynch is very assured too
