We are not the only county to have divisional teams. I've just had a look at how it is run in Cork; they have 12 Senior clubs, a number of divisional teams and 2 college teams. As far as I can make out, the divional/college teams play off before the club championships start, with the winner joining the clubs in the quarter finals. The clubs play off in 3 groups of 4, with 2 teams advancing from each group. It looks like they have 3 quarter finals and 2 semi finals, so I presume that the best performing group winner goes straight to a semi final. As far as I know, some counties such as Cork and Galway have received a derogation on the 16-team rule for this year but must revert to 16 teams for next year. Galway has 17 teams in this years football championship. It was 18 last year and will go to 16 next year. It’s saying something about whoever in the ivory tower of Croker insisting on 16 team rule being applied across the board that they pay no heed to the same rule being applied to Leitrim (24 clubs) and Cork (245 odd clubs). No regard whatsoever for what is the best approach for a particular county or for players overall. Similar to Minor U17/18 issue where they just lied about or ignored the fact that most kids do the leaving cert when they are turning 19 now. So u18 - which most people in every county agree is the correct grade for minor - would have minimal impact and players are largely in 5th year.

Some really insightful and interesting views in this thread. We certainly seem to be asking our star players to play too much football. Could the club and county championship not be amalgamated and as Kerrybhoy said above divisional teams are reviewed on a yearly basis along with Micks suggestion that the clubs they can draw from are restricted. I worry for county players getting zero time away from the game. Terrible to say but sometimes you are hoping their clubs are beaten so they get a break and it shouldn't be like that. I agree with split, but I'd have 12 senior clubs in 3 groups of 4. Top 6 qualify for knockout stages of club & county championship (2 Quarters & 2 semis in club championship). Divisional teams play off in knockout format for 2 remaining places in county championship {open draw quarter finals}. The GAA have some limit of 16 teams in county/club championships. I'd opt for 12 senior clubs in 2 groups of 6. Group winners to semi-finals. 2nd and 3rd into quarter-finals. Senior club winner going onto Munster. The divisional club tradition can continue but in a Divisional Club Championship. The winners of both the Senior Club Championship and the Divisional Club Championship can contest the County Championship Final. The County Championship final should be irrelevant to the GAA limit of 16 as the Senior Club Championship would be providing the Kerry representative and the County Championship final should be a purely Kerry matter.

I'm forever being asked about the Kerry setup as regards divisional sides. I may be old fashioned but I still think it has a place. Would Paudie Clifford have come up without it. I think that we play divisional sides from u14 up is a plus as players develop at different ages. Some may be outstanding at 14 but more may not develop until 18 or 19. The remark about 2 AIs in 14 years is irrelevant as that is because of Dublin having a team for the ages and playing at home in the biggest games. The wheels always turn.

Ya it's not just the seniors that play divisional...its critical to underage development, people always forget this it seems.

Think Dingle are the current form team & will be too good for Dr Crokes - assume Tony Brosnan still not available but Crokes still relying on too many of their old guard - Payne, Fionn Fitz, Casey, Looney etc - Dingle for me.

Yes, I actually half agree, I just feel, Dingle may taper it down a bit, especially if they are planning for a stint of serious club football in the fall of the year. On form yes, everything points to Dingle, just depends on plans and squad availability and freshness.

Does anyone know how many Stacks players have committed to St Brendans? More so considering its now, minimum a two year involvement.

I think Dingle are about to realise their potential- for whatever reason, they have underperformed in my opinion last few years. I think irrespective of winning the club championship their focus will now shift to the county championship- they have scoring forwards, Mark O’Connor will improve with games. If St Brendans win tonight, which I feel they will, Crokes could be facing a very tricky 2nd round game.

Whatever about the players, I know some Stacks supporters who are very sniffy about it. It's like being part of a Divisional side is beneath their club or something. Bit of denial going on maybe. Kinda funny really.

Well, maybe a lot of rockies bought in to the media consensus that being intermediate was only a one year thing and that they'd be dining at the top after a twelve month sabbatical from senior ball.
The intermediate is one of the hardest competitions in Kerry, the reality is the rockies could be there for two or three years, so there might have no choice but to throw their lot on with Brendans.
The fun will be if the Narries ever end up with them at intermediate level, will this resurrect a 'Tralee District' team or would they all in turn fall under the umbrella of St Brendans?

That hypothetical question was posed some years ago when KO’R faced a relegation battle vs Kilcummin - county board , at that time, had no answer - it has been mooted for some time that Tralee board would merge with St Brendans board but that has not been progressed.

Well that comment about Tralee and Brendans board have amalgamated fir league and C'ship so one would envisage that would fall in.

Shocking display by Brendans. Strong team on paper but never raised a gallop at all. Was it one or two points from play they got?

MURT MURPHY Social share Kerry Senior County Championship Group 4 RD 1
Na Gaeil 3-11 St Brendans Board 0-5
Na Gaeil ran riot as they dispatched their district colleagues St Brendan's Board in the opening round of the Kerry County Senior Football Championship.
A St Brendan’s side packed with players from Austin Stacks and Ardfert who both played in semi-final action in the club Championship a week prior. They showed a lack of sharpness having limited time to train.
Na Gaeil once formed a core chunk of the Brendan’s side and could join them again next year if they are relegated from the Senior Championship.
Stefan Okunbor, who was a late change for Na Gaeil, showed just what Kerry and his club have been missing this year, covering all areas off the park but mainly operating as a defensive mainstay.
It was all Na Gaeil who dominated for large parts of the opening half, despite being ahead by a slim margin 0-4 to 0-2 by the end of the opening quarter, three points in succession from Devon Burns, Jack Sheehan and Dara Devine opened up a 0-7 to 0-2 lead at the break.
Wayne Guthrie was quick to deny Darragh Reen a chance at goal in the dying minutes of the opening half and it was clear that the writing was already on the wall for Brendan's.
Into the second half and again it was a stanza where Na Gaeil dictated the tempo, three goals in the final ten minutes rubber stamped an impressive performance by the Tralee side against their district neighbours.
Diarmuid O’Connor and Damien Bourke added early points as Brendan’s were struggling to hit scores, Sean Quilter would kick three points in the second half but missing a host of players and a lack of time to get a group together cost them.
Jack Bourke netted the first of three late goals in the 51st minute; his brother Damian who started off a move from deep applied the finishing touch for the second three minutes later. Guthrie had denied Kieran O’Connor with the initial effort but was unable to save the second attempt.
Kieran O’Connor raised the green flag as Na Gaeil were shredding the Brendan’s backline, capping off a dominant finish to end and now face Dingle or Crokes with renewed confidence.
Scorers for Na Gaeil: D Bourke, K O’Connor (1-1 each), J Bourke (1-0 each), J Sheehan (0-3), D Devine (0-2, 1f), J Doyle, D Reen, D O’Connor (0-1 each), D Burns (0-1f)
Scorers for St Brendan’s: S Quilter (0-3, 0-2f), J Linehan (0-1), A O’Donoghue (0-1f)

Subs: D Goggin for D Reen (42), J Bourke for D Devine (45), K O’Connor for J O’Connor (50), R O’Sullivan for J Doyle (59), L Barrett for K O’Donovan (59)

No reason why the Intermediate etc finals couldn't be played this weekend. Makes no sense whatsoever to wait for another few weeks.
