People are very quick to retire lads. I thought jack Barry had a good season to be honest. He was doing a specific role of dropping back behind the half back line on most games. Against cork, Louth, Tyrone and Derry and even once or twice against Dublin he was instrumental in either forcing a turnover or standing a guy up in that area. Foolish as it may sound I think Geaney has been affected adversely by the emergence of David Clifford. He's no longer the first choice for the ball in and has to make extra runs consistently as all the outfield players look to hit Clifford first and geaney after if Clifford isn't an option. So instead of getting the ball in space Geaney is getting the ball more often than not on the loop. Kerry basically went through the championship this year with 17 / 18 players. Outside the starting 15 for the final, Adrian Spillane and Tony Brosnan were the only players that got good minutes consistently. Beaglaoch wasn't only got minutes really in the last 2 games and Killian only came on in the final. Dylan Casey was jettisoned after the mayo game. Our bench had absolutely nothing to offer on Sunday to help change the game apart from Killian We need to be going into the championship with our our 9 or whatever subs having proper CVs of I/C football, albeit league. Proper hours of action, not minutes here and there.

I'd be very disappointed if Paul Geaney retired from I/C. I think he has a lot to offer. Above is correct. The commitment these fellas are putting in is just outrageous. They owe us nothing. As a sub at best for me. We play two inside forwards and this iteration of Paul simply does not score enough and this is compounding the reliance on David Clifford which was and has been manifest fir the last 2 seasons. It may have coincided with the arrival of Clifford and how we play but his scoring rate since 2019 has dropped off significantly (unlike when he was the star turn) and he's not there for his work rate and tracking back if we are honest. Recent scoring summary in the proper games: Final '23 - 1-1 (goal on a plate by DC) Semi '23 - 0 Quarter '23 - 1pt Final '22 - 1pt Semi '22 - 0 Quarter '22 - 4pts Semi '21 - 1pt Munster Final '20 - inj'd Final Replay '19 - 4pts Final Day 1 '19 - 0 Semi '19 - 3pts Super8 '19 Donegal 1-4 Mayo 1-2 Meath 0-2 I agree. I’m a huge Paul Geaney fan but I feel his accuracy has decreased for whatever reason these past 2 years. He had a very good final but still left 1-1 after him while he had a lot of wides in both the semi and final last year. I still think he would be a very good option off the bench. As to replacing him I’m looking forward to seeing Donal Down in the county championship and I think he should be given the full league next year. My number 1 option though to start next to David in next year’s championship would be Killian Spillane. I think he can be a 3/4 point man every game. He could be the perfect partner inside for David as he’s accurate and able to manufacture shooting opportunities but he’s not the type of forward who wants to be the number 1 kick pass target all the time. Other option is have Seanie operating closer to goals and go with him and David as our inside 2 but for that to work we would need to find 3 half forwards who will consistently get scores.

We have to ask ourselves is that enough? Surely we can find a midfielder who will do good defensive work but who is also capable of contributing to the attack. Jack Barry has been a good servant for Kerry and has maximised his ability but it’s not unfair to say he is limited and that we should be looking for an upgrade. He could be good in a role of coming on to see out games.

Good point Ciarraímich regarding midfield cover by Dublin, the key point really is how diverse and adaptable they were, this also keeps teh opposition guessing. A serious ace up ones sleeve.
The general consensus on here, from both the Kerry Dublin thread and the 2024 future Kerry thread is that our bench in particular was ineffective when compared to Dublin and we are still lacking midfield, wing forward and a scoring forward cover.
This year’s league, Jack spelled it out that he was down bodies near double figures, the league was about survival and giving panel players a chance to stake a claim.
From Sundays starting XV alone, the following did not feature in the early league stages, Shane Ryan, Gavin White, Brión O’Beagleoich, Diarmuid O’Connor, Seanie O’Shea, Stephen O’Brien, Paul Geaney and the two Clifford brothers. The theory at the time was that Jack would be forced to look at fringe players and unearth players to fill the void of Moran as well as adequate defensive cover, a working wing forward that will also trouble the scoreboard as well as an inside man capable of taking the heat off DC.
It is widely believed that it invariably takes players twelve months for the body to adjust to the rigors of intercounty training, there are the exceptions, but they are rare. Anyway, due to the forced absences in this year’s league, seven or eight players got their chance but in reality, we unearthed nothing new. In the white heat of battle, we had defensive cover, adequate cover in Breen and O’Beagleoich. When the league was finished Barry Dan had got his reward for playing consistent high level club ball, but being cold, Jack didn’t consider him adequate post the Munster Championship. Up top it was the same, work horses in Burns and Spillane/O’Brien but no scoring threat bar the final 20 minutes of the 2023 championship when Killian was sprung.
Our league full forward line vs Donegal was Brosnan, Roche and Spillane, vs Mayo it was Brosnan, Roche and Donal Down. By the end of the championship, one had dropped off, one was very unfortunate, and one saw no game time. Ruairi and Buckley for me have also plateaued. The one player I think is most capable and may benefit from the year inside is Donal Down, however, he wasn’t on the EK starting side last year.
Invariably, I am a bottle half full man, but in reality, we will have the same XII of the starting XV next year, unless we have a bolter. Any new panel member will need twelve months to adjust unless we rearrange the deckchairs.

Neither geaney or k Spillane have it now but they are very clever and movement is step ahead whereas Donal seems very naive. Decent player but I fear that’s all… i think he started a league game this year and his frailties showed up , it was the one after Monaghan at home… rob monahan for me will be the only one to step up… it will depend then if joe o Connor can come good also. The likes of ruairi Murphy will need another 2 years and even then, the jury is out. Monahan is serious prospect though. Thomas o donnel from castlegregory is another who has the ingredients but remains to be seen.

Yes, I partly agree regarding Donal, I'm basing my opinion that the year inside will improve, I do agree though, Donal was also average in Salthill and overturned a few times, in the back of my mind too is the fact he couldn't make the stating EK XV.
William Shine too was very impressive with the U20’s, however, when Legion played NK Rangers in Asdee he was fairly anonymous, then again, the issue with a corner forward is the quality of ball in, and that night Legion were lacking and NK had three in position around him. Agree on Rob Monahan, he is the one bolter for me that may make a difference, if Joe O'Connor recovers in time, he and Monohan would form an imposing midfield partnership for St Brendans, the question is how interested will Stacks be in this enforced alliance.
Cillian Burke and Sean O’Brien too are ones showing promise, a good county championship showing wouldn’t do their credentials any harm.
Disappointed with Paul O’Shea, I had great hopes for him, but he has really fallen from grace.

Looking back and thinking ahead, I hope Geaney stays on, his movement and finish for the goal was top class and has been underplayed far too much. David got all the credit but Geaneys movement created the opportunity. He still has a major role to play and seems to be in good shape physically. I think Jack was pinning his hopes on Brosnan being the breakout player this year, Tony got lots of game time in league and championship but to be honest did not grab the opportunity and in someways played his way off the team. Hopefully Tony recovers well and next year he does a ‘Basquel’ as he has the talent.
Like others have said, Donal Down has a way to go but if he can form that partnership with David and Paudie for EK, he could be worth looking at.
Killian is definitely more of a Croke Park player but given his talent Killian should be aiming for a starting spot. Dylan Geaney has been in with the panel and I will be interested in club performances. I expect he has filled out nicely from a physical perspective so really should be making a mark at this stage.
On Ruairi Murphy, it is clears mgt have a lot of time for him as he has gotten a lot of game despite not making a major impact really. Again I expect him to physically develop in the next while. In some ways, his trajectory is similar to Diarmuid O Connor.
Contrary to a lot of people, I think we have a top class midfield but what we don’t have is any support to push them on. Last year, we had Moran and Joe O Connor and it meant we always had options. We badly need more competition and depth in this area.
We are largely ok in the backs in that we have options to call in if things not going well.

He said Dublin's panel is so competitive in the midfield area that it gives them advantage as in AvB training games they're pushing each other. He might have meant this relative to Kerry as we're quite weak here.

That partnership for Donal Down with David & Paudie may not happen - believe the Cliffords are only going to play with Fossa for the rest of the year & are not participating with East Kerry in the county championship- it’s a big blow for EK but not surprising as the lads, mentally & physically, badly need a break.

Barry and O'Connor did very well against the so-called top two partnerships in the country (Tyrone and Derry).
Barry has been better this year and you can't be throwing out any player without naming two better than them.

Interesting, well it means Donal Down should get plenty of game time then. If EK were to progress, surely the the two lads could be tempted back for a semi or final.

That’s a bit of a surprise but I only see it as a good thing. The 2 lads could definitely do with the break and it will no doubt benefit them when the inter county season comes around. A knock on effects is that it will make the EK forward line somewhat easier to make. Take Will Shine who has been mentioned as a possibility for Kerry next year, he may now make the East Kerry team and get vital county championship experience. Another effect is that it makes the county championship much more interesting. EK will still be strong but they are back in the pack now along with Mid Kerry, Brendans and Dingle.

If Stack buy into the championship, St. Brendans could be dark horses, jez, if Na Gaeil were still with them they be fair strong.
Dingle for me would be the strongest club side on paper, that a fair assessment?

I wouldn’t agree with you if it’s the Dingle team that played in the county league with the addition of 2 Geaneys Tom And Barry Dan they’re probably the weakest dingle team in years louds of guys starting who where playing b football last year that’s due to the likes of Matthew flaherty George Durant aodhan Oconnor Padraig Oconnor Conor osullivan etc etc who are either injured or travelling unless they all return for championship my favourites would be crokes as they’ve a nice blend of youth with experience

Dingle are down a no of players similar to Kerins O’Rahillys - Rathmore & Dr Crokes make up the rest of the group & it really is a group of death - Rathmore would be my choice to top the group as I don’t see Crokes having the strength in depth that they used to have. Rathmore have a good no of recent minors & U20s - the likes of Brian Friel, Mark Ryan, Fionn Murphy, Dan Murphy, Alan Dineen & Darragh Rahillys - all very solid performers. The other group could see Kenmare come out on top as I think they will have too much for the likes of Spa, Templenoe & Na Gaeil - think Na Gaeil are the most vulnerable of all & could see them struggle to retain their senior status.

Much more than traditionally bigger townie teams.

I hope the Clifford's don't play with East Kerry this year.
Play with your Pals lads, have a few beers, spend time with your family, enjoy the summer in Killarney.
You have done us proud.
Take a break,
Charge the batteries...

I may be going against the grain here but,
Dublins Bench wasn't that impressive.
McCaffery was excellent but apart from that who really made ab impact ?
We were the authors of our own demise.
I won't single any player out but it was that silly goal that cost us...

I won't single any player out but it was that silly goal that cost us... I think Evan Murphy caught a few kickouts. Dean Rock scored an easy free and another shot was saved over the crossbar by Ryan. Niall Scully is very experienced at this level so know what needs to be done. I agree though. Dublin weren't great. I thought we fell apart in final 1/4. We were up 3 points twice in 2nd half and gifted them a goal. All we had to do was keep the scoreboard ticking over. Clifford looked off to me for some reason. Even in the first half when he beat Fitzsimons and Fitzsimons fell over, why didn't Clifford take his point? He ran to the 14 and got turned over. I don't like criticising him because he's had a tough year. He lost his grandmother this year also which hasn't been mentioned. Maybe everything caught up with him, including the long season with Fossa.

I think Stacks will be focused on the Intermediate Championship and largely won't give a monkey's about the St. Brendans opportunity. I think this view will have been cemented by having to play their Div 1 Co. League play off without the services of their two county players on the panel (Dylan Casey and Jack O'Shea). From Joe O'Connors perspective, it would be absolute lunacy to do anything other than nurse himself back to full fitness with his club and give St. Brendans a wide berth.

We won't know for a while if Jack and selectors are staying. Jack probably will as he does nt like to leave after a final defeat but if one of the selectors leaves I would love to see Fitzmaurice come in as a number two. I was critical of Eamonn as a manager but he might be brilliant number 2.As a manager he was able to really buckle Cluxton but his big problem was when things went his plans went wrong he was a bit slow to rectify. However he is a great student of the game and the most knowledgeable pundit out there. While I don't want his number one I think he would be a massive addition to the management team. All the big counties heave ex managers as numbers two s now. Cian Ó Neill (Galway) Kevin Walsh (Cork) Rochford (Mayo) Gilroy (Dublin) Good idea. He's lots of free time in the summer anyway. He seems the type of person who's not too egotistical to be a number two and worked with Jack before anyway. I liked him as a manager. I thought he had a weakish panel, caught between two golden generations. He was unlucky also cos he only got one good season out of Gooch and JOD together. By the time gooch came back he wasn't the same, and JOD was very injury prone.

And a lot of players made debuts under him but shows their was a lack of talent when only 4 of the players from 2014 were still there in 2022 I thought he was forced to play lot of average players or older players on their last legs. We probably only had 10 quality players back then, when you need 20, but he still won an AI. Like in 2015 he had a retired Paul Galvin as a sub and Donaghy and JOD who were injured all season. Also came up against a extremely strong Dublin team.

If Stack buy into the championship, St. Brendans could be dark horses, jez, if Na Gaeil were still with them they be fair strong. Dingle for me would be the strongest club side on paper, that a fair assessment? I think Stacks will be focused on the Intermediate Championship and largely won't give a monkey's about the St. Brendans opportunity. I think this view will have been cemented by having to play their Div 1 Co. League play off without the services of their two county players on the panel (Dylan Casey and Jack O'Shea). From Joe O'Connors perspective, it would be absolute lunacy to do anything other than nurse himself back to full fitness with his club and give St. Brendans a wide berth. Stacks as a club might not be bothered about St Brendans but, on the other hand, the likes of Casey and Jack O'Shea might fancy the exposure in furtherance of their county prospects?

Perhaps they might (hence my choice of the word "largely") but deep down I suspect they already know the pathway to enhanced prospects for Kerry rests on what they do inside in Kerry training from Jan 2024 and in any games they play for Kerry thereafter.

Lads I like Eamon and agree a selector role under Jack could be a good idea. BUT let's not make so many excuses for the failings under him. He displayed a persistent inability to change things during a game if the original strategy wasn't working. The 2015 AI final was a disaster on his part, ditto the replay against Mayo in 17 when he made crazy starting calls. The less said about 18 the better.
Hopefully he has learned from all that and has evolved as a coach/manager and if so it might be good to see him prowling the sidelines again for Kerry.

You'd argue what Kerry need now is s bit of a building job. Could have three retirements and need to find another 4 maybe 5 players. Is Jack going to start that rebuild in his final year or is it a case of stick with what you have for one more year and see will it work? Jack not known for building teams!!

He'll do what's ever necessary to win. He introduced new players in 2004. He's been coaching teams for 30 years now I guess. He's not afraid to bring in outside help either. I think it's our attacking play that needs work. Although I feel we were so close to winning the last day, it doesn't need huge work. Gavin White is very reliable normally. If you watch it back, Paul Murphy ran across Basquel, which might've hidden him. Just a terrible time and position to blunder. Even at that, I'm pretty certain Shane Ryan would've saved it. I feel pity for the players. They must know they're good enough to win each year. 2018 was a disaster but from 2019 onwards, we've been good enough to win an AI. That's only one AI from 5 attempts. We've 3 starters pushing on, so we need at least 3 quality players. Possibly more. I think Geaney, SOB and Paul Murphy would be brilliant options from the bench. All very clever, technical, experienced players. Geaney could be our Kevin McManamon, scoring vital goals from the bench.

Heard it more than once in the last few days that some members of the team may take a break in the earlier rounds of the County Championship. Will play in the Club Championship but won't be available for the early stages of the Championship for their divisional team.
