Alot of negativity on here folks and I suppose I can see why- definitely the overall performances are well down for that we because used to last year- but who is surprised by that? Im not- in fact, i was worried at start of league that we’d be in relegation trouble. Overall im most disappointed that we had to/choose to bring back the Fossa/Rathmore players so early in the year- hope we dont regret that later. Alot of inconsistant performances overall- almost all of the players had games (or part of games) where they were very impressive and then other games where they were very poor- maybe typical of what can happen when they are not at full fitness, rusty . But I think we also have to remember that some of the players have stuff going on off the pitch that has to be having an impact and also it does seem like we havent figured out or set up a robust style or how to deal with defence etc- maybe that is fatal of maybe Jack &co have a plan and we just dont know it yet- im choosing to believe the latter and give them some faith that they know more than I about some of the details. "lucky to scramble over the line v Dubs & Galway"?? Come off it, will you. We were the best team in Ireland by a country mile last year, no "on paper" about it. Did we not need a last minute injury time free to beat the Dubs to scramble over the line or did u dream it? Did we not get a lucky free v Galway near end of game to get ahead with a few mins to go (most refs would nt give the free úd say). Now tell me I'm wrong again!! Black! You're absolutely not wrong and well entitled to express an opinion. Kerry were the best and most consistent team in 2022, no doubt about it! But by a country mile? Define that one please? Were we so far ahead of all other contenders? I suppose the answer doesn’t matter because ultimately Kerry won it all. However, we shouldn’t exaggerate or re-write history, like all winners Kerry enjoyed some good fortune along the way. A Dublin team clearly in transition from the six-in-a-row side and missing Con nearly caught us and we got some vital breaks against Galway. Again this doesn’t change the fact that Kerry were worthy winners of it all in 2022. Moreover, we remain a contender in a larger field for 2023 but I would not suggest we are ahead of the pack by any means - not even by an inch.

Id agree its a game of inches for us at present its a long time since we were better by a country mile !!! Truthfully not much between us and Galway and Mayo and Dublin and Tyrone and Derry We played poor today and still could have gotten a result thats tells you we are in with a good shot were not far off probably we would not have been able for Mayo in the final anyhow maybe better off if you want to find a positive from today. I wonder if on review could some one figure how many scores we got from ball kicked down to the 14 or 15 area s as opposed to scores got from ball sent down the right flank to 13 area im assuming it would make for a stark contrast and the turn over count on the right side was huge by comparison the left side . Same point im making all day obout our over reliance on DC and we need to use him as a decoy sometimes especially when hes been tracked by two or three men at all times

I think Barry Dan is a real find. Getting more confident each game. Tony Brosnan and Ruairi Murphy can pick a pass however Tony is very one sided. Donal O'Sullivan didn't have a great game but is gaining experience. Dylan Casey did fine. Gavin White and Diarmuid O'Connor got more game time and will improve. Galway are a very good team. I'm happy enough with the league as there is a long time before Kerrys next meaningful outing. No point in peaking early this year.

I'm more worried about management and our style of play. Yes Donal Down was poor today but many a player has had poor games. I've seen enough to know I would be quite happy to see Donal on the first 26.im also happy with Darragh Roche Barry Dan and indeed Stefan (injury permitting). While I don't think Stefan is a starter I do think he can offer us something. With Diarmuid back and Ó Beaglaoich to return we have a strong panel. The big worry is who else will get injured and more injuries are a very real possibility. Our style of play has to change. Teams are on to us. Jack and selectors have to have a big discussion and realise they need to change things up when a style is not working. Also we have other forwards besides David so use them properly. Last year we got our defense in order but besides David our forwards were not as dangerous as before. We have time but we need to change. On injuries I wonder where is Dan Ó Donoghue? I accept that tactically we weren't good. Too much ball into the corner etc. The management are no fools and will address that.I also believe we will have a stronger panel for the championship and will go a long way.

The Cliffords need a rest as they look burnt out. Hopefully Jack has a plan in place for the Championship and a variation to our style of play. As I said I hope we are not going down the route of alternating goalkeepers again.

If you go by that logic, every AI winning team is ‘lucky’. The fact is we were very deserving winners last year and were the best team all year. Yes we were the best team last year but we got the bit of luck that helped us. We won finals before without that extra luck. We were the best team in 2021 too but we did nt have the luck. Tyrone had the luck v us but they did nt need the luck in final v Mayo. Anyway that's my opinion and you have yours which is fine too. 50/50 calls went with us last year. Don't forget we were the best team in 2011 too but we did nt win. We got a 50/50 call in the final just after Galway got a soft free for a textbook shoulder on McDaid and with Gavin White about to launch a counter attack. Even without the 50/50 call we would most likely have won and ended up pulling away. Every AI winning team gets a few breaks on the way. The good teams take advantage of those breaks. Can I ask you something. Do you think that Kerry were fully deserving winners last year?

Overall, I think we need to have a look at Devon in goal as Ryan's deputy. I think that Dublin game last year has shook Murphy's confidence. Maybe Jack should have given him the jersey for the following game as a sign of faith. The best time to get on a bike after falling off is straight away. A great display in goal today until his error and it just confirmed who Kerry's #1 is. Shane Murphy is definitely not the worst keeper this century, but Shane Ryan is top dog at the moment.
I think the league campaign showed that some players are league standard at best. Maybe we need to start newer players in the league next year. I'd rather not name names here but some players haven't progressed after a few years and we should give others a shot.
The main objectives of the league is to 1) don't get relegated 2) find newer players that could be relied on to come in
Kerry didn't get relegated and they have a few players found that might not be starters but I can see come on as a sub at championship stage. All in all not the worst league campaign but we can now concentrate on preparing for the championship. A league final would have been pointless v Mayo due to them being in the same situation again with the Championship as last year. I think Galway will win as they have go hell for leather while Mayo cannot do the same with the Rossies the following week.

Well that was a long day's journey with no reward at the end of the western road.
I think the 2023 League is a case of better best forgotten from a Kingdom perspective.
I actually think it was a decent standard of a game and we were better than we were against the likes of Roscommon, but faint praise that I suppose!
Galway were the better side, they're scores just came that little easier. We were lethargic in attack and, as others have noted, we ran into end roads and masses of Galway backs.
David wasn't just poor, he was anonymous, Seanie sub-standard. These lads need a rest.
Barry Dan was taken off after a heavy collision a few minutes before half-time to be replaced by DOC. The rather ponderous stadium announcer who discussed just about everything pre-match (including the weather conditions) didn't bother to mention that change at the time.
After half-time he was back on but then taken off very quickly, I assume it was precautionary given the above?
Our full back line was very solid, felt Foley and Casey were tenacious and Tom Sull like Gavin were threats going forward.
Barry Dan is developing into a decent option I feel. In contrast to many I felt being at the game that Jack did ok, a few mistakes aside.
Murphy looked comfortable out there which was another plus. Likewise I would not be so hard on Brosnan I believe he is forcing himself into the reckoning though too often today he tried to run though 3-4 Galway backs only for the inevitable to happen.
Positives - that was as close to Championship pace as any game we've had this League and we lost because of a freak goal.
Negatives - read the last two pages
We are dealing with a League in a year where there is a whole new format that makes winning it less attractive than usual. After 3 titles in a row I won't lose any sleep over not getting to Croke Park next Sunday. Another title was not a goal this year, staying in D1 was the only goal and we achieved it.
True it doesn't excuse the raft of poor performances but people talking about this campaign being 'a disaster' need a reality check. To dust off an old chestnut ITS THE LEAGUE lads! Ultimately who cares, we have bigger things to concentrate on given where we sit in the scheme of things.
We've a good month to hone our fitness, tactics and strategies. The week in Portugal will bring them on big time.
As an aside €12 for 3 hours parking in Galway city centre, on top of everything else - BLOODY HELL!

Very strange game today. I wouldn’t agree with some posters here about Tony Brosnan. I have been critical of him on here during the league but, though he did well today just wasn’t best served by the forward tactics employed. I don’t know what the fascination with playing the ball into the right corner is. Aidan O’Rourke highlighted it in his column during the week after the Rossies game. We bring it deep into the corner and look to move it quickly to the other corner hoping for a 1 on 1.
Galway were wise to it today and we kept trying the same thing over and over. Tony broke threw 2 galway lads out on the right wing in the second half and when he looked to pass it the only option was into the right corner once again. Galway today had great success in the first half by using their full back ( forget his name) to create the over lap. David Cliifford was chasing back but, wasn’t able to keep with him and we were wide open down the middle. David Moran used drop into the pocket to act as an auxiliary centre back allowing Morley drop off. Today our midfield didn’t do that leaving an ocean of space down the middle especially early in the game.
Murphy was unlucky with the goal but, apart from that thought he had a great game. Barry Dan looked good as well and unless he was injured it was strange to take him off. Ruari Murphy did well as well but Donal Down hasn’t found the going a lot tougher in the past few starts.
Hopefully the training camp in Portugal will bring things on again but, we really need to sort out our issues at midfield. The way things have panned out during the league I would say Barry Dan has played better than Jack Barry.

Look I do think Galway haven't progressed at all. Tierney is just becoming a real leader. They still depend on same men. Mayo have unearthed nothing. Dublin looking scrambling forthe past. However Derry are a threat. Kerry on the other hand seems to unearthed a scoring midfielder (first since jacko) Tony has great vision and we saw glimpses of this thought out the league. Croke park will suit him as it will Donal down. I think the panel is very strong. Midfield was a worry but Barry Dan seems to be the answer

Poor league overall but objective achieved. Some observations Interested in peoples views but I felt Kerry played their best game of the league today - were more direct and transitioned the ball better than previous games - Galway conceding the kickout helped.
Avoiding the league final is no bad thing - we are just not ready
We conceded at least 3 points from soft turnovers, largely as a result of poor decision making and getting funnelled down the outside channel - we need to get overlaps down the the centre
Both teams scored 8pts from play…we worked harder for ours which is the story of our season
Back line did well…Shane Walsh didn’t score from play.
At the game I thought Seanie got through a lot of work and constantly made runs or tracked back. He drives on others around him.
Diarmuid did well when he came on but surprised to see Barry Dan get hauled off as he was really getting stuck in and growing into the game. Diarmuid looks like he’s ready to lead a little more - big plus for Kerry
Dara did very well - showed for plenty and brought a bit of much needed intensity.
Gavin showed why he is key to this team - also marshalled one of Galway’s best players on the day
Paudie played better in the 2nd half. David’s first 10mins set the tone for himself / thankfully the break has come at the right time for the Clifford’s
Upfront we need a target man beside DC - a Donaghy type - probably not about in the county

Question for anyone at today's game. I did nt travel today but after watching live on TV and TSG I'm wondering did the sun cause Shane Murphys error for the goal? The reason I ask is I noticed Gavin White got caught out badly with a high ball in first half too which led to Shane making a good save. He mistimed his jump badly and looked like he was affected by the sun. If he was maybe Shane was too. Just an observation. White was pushed by Tierney for that high ball. Should have been a free out. I think you're being kind to Shane to blame the sun.

Usually the ball would fall outwards in that situation but unfortunately it fell into the goal on this occasion. Hopefully we’ve used up our goalkeeping mistakes for the year.

Overall this was probably the worst league for us in a good few years - but we seemed to be accepting that would happen before a ball was kicked. No harm in that as long as we can now re-boot.
There are some positives however - Barry Dan, Donal Down, Dara R, Ruari are all decent footballers - Id say most will be starters within a few years. Barry Dan especially, looks very promising and exactly what we need.
Negatives - some of the lads that have been on the fringes last few years have not improved enough to break through. Pity Stefan and Mike Breen and Dan O D havent had a decent injury free run - Mike in particular I think is vital to us in the HB line, and maybe an option at midfield also.
Re the goal - am I mistaken or did Shane M have a very smilar goal in Jan/Feb? Cant recall the game though. Shane is a good keeper - great shot blocker - but I think he is suspect under a high ball. League next year needs to give one of the others a chance.
Overall - our attacking style is too dependent on lads trying to pick out a dainty safe pass. We need lads to mix it up - take a player on sometimes and break the line. We are too predictable and not direct enough in this regard. The classic example of this is Stephen O B - I have never been a huge fan of his but its only when hes gone that you see the value of what he brings.

We lost three of our 4 away league games by a score.
We won our home games.
We got game time into some players of real championship potential.
Paul Murphy showing great league form.
Division 1 status secured.
I thought we played some very decent football, at times, today. Glimpses of what is to come, hopefully.
We are a very decent team and will be in there pitching at the business end. We are by no means well ahead of the rest. We need our key men to be fit and ready to rock for Championship.
Hoping it’s all part of the plan!

Well, the league campaign has come to an end, like any episode or series, one must take stock and re-evaluate the pre-tournament goals, the progress, and make the conclusion.
Jack made no secret that this league campaign was about survival, he stated in a pre-season interviews, that that six points would enable us retain our divisional status, he pointed to the three home ties and any points picked up on the road would be a bonus – in that regard that goal or plan was carried out.
Jack also alluded, to the plan to unearth or give game time to new players, in that regard, I think we have only unearthed panel players, no new bolter will be lining out come dry sod ball post April.
Alarmingly, the opposition have established the best way to neutralise our main danger man in Clifford is to double team the conductors out the field, both Paudie and Seanie had poor leagues be their own high standards as they now have to negotiate specifically tailored man markers designated to eradicate their influence on proceedings, similarly Tadgh Morley, now finds himself invariably on the wing being pulled from the centre to enable teams exploit the space on the “D”.
The back seven from last year’s final were, Ryan, Graham, Jason, Tom, Brión, Tadgh and Gavin.. after this league campaign, once Brión is fully fit, one would expect him to slot back in at five with Murphy falling to the bench, coldly, I would have Dylan Casey ahead of Paul Murphy with Graham sliding out if needs be, but we really only have eight players for six positions.
What was striking for me yesterday, was, when Geaney was introduced, it was Paul that made way with Paudie going to wing back… that might not be the worst move, invariable wing backs are let roam, its harder to mark a man in space, this is a ploy I can see more and more this Spring/Summer.
Up front, only Donal Down has emerged as a possible new panel member, I firmly believe Adrian and Killian will see more game time with Adrain starting on the wing for his physicality and work rate.
Brosnan, although can supply the split defence pass, that eye of the needle stuff won’t work on better defences, for me, it’s actually more getting the basics right than anything else., head up, punt pass to space as opposed to turning into the man.
Barry Dan, has impressed , however, I can’t see Jack breaking up the Na Gaeil duo, still he will have a place to play in a horses for courses situation.
Alarmingly, our panel isn’t as big or as powerful, as we like to think, looking ahead at this juncture, assuming all fit, the only change from the All Ireland winning side is Diarmuid O’Connor for Moran with Adrain on the wing. In O’Brien’s absence, Dara may push for a wing berth, other than that it’s prob, Spillane for Geaney.
Hard to make a case for anyone else, in that regard.. the back to back looks challenging.

Excellent post, I feared a Tryone style hangover and we certainly have that during the league. I'm hoping 4 good weeks training and a warm weather camp will rejuvenate the team particularly our key players. The championship is wide open with one of Kerry,Galway,Mayo,Dublin,Tyrone and Derry winning it. Haven't had that wide open a championship since the 1990s and that's a really good thing.

I thought Tony Brosnan did well yesterday, he was on a lot of ball and didn't turn it over. I think he'll be big in Croker. The options just weren't there for key offloads. Out forward lines were well held overall. Credit must be given to Galway's defence, very mean, through the middle especially. David Clifford is human, I'm only convinced now. He had an off day, was forcing things too much, I would argue that both Seanie and David need fitness boosts. Gav's pace is unreal. Exciting game because it was close, but this 15 behind the ball, working out, across, back, out across, forcing...turnover(or the common referee action of circling of the hands) is the common fare now. Fitness levels need to be so high to play this way. Not that pretty to watch. Galway took 3-4 of the last 10 minutes out of the game just recycling sideways and back. Graham made one bad turnover pass when we were only 1 pt down. He was only on, caught cold. An aside - Galway is one hoor of a city to get out of...

Excellent read, fair play. It got me thinking about absolute blue chip players on our team that would be a shoe in on any other county side. For me they would be; Jason Foley, Tom Sullivan, Gavin White, Paudie, David & Seanie Shea. If our key men aren’t firing, we are in bother. Around the middle appears to be our weakness, David Moran becoming more of a loss as time goes by, oh to have Mark O’ Connor back!

@ horsebox77 Excellent post, and summation of where Kerry now stand post-league 2023. Perhaps a benefit from this league is any hype about Kerry doing back to back is well dampened down in advance of the Championship. Kerry are a contender no doubt but it's looking like one of the most democratic championships for many years – reminiscent of the 90s’. No bad thing for football overall.

Veteran 2.0 here and for me you unearth a few ideas. Firstly just because we didn't unearth an immediate star doesn't necessarily mean there was less development, though as for Barry Dan it is more a question of if as opposed to when, and that could be sooner rather than later - he looks so at home the way he carries himself and he has a fine frame; as they say 'he looks like a footballer', a hoor of wan, the two ends of a hoor, hopefully a thundering wan - for me a great is in the making here. As for double marking, the fabled Fossa fellas will find a way, as all greats do - having to go down to 13 men frees up 2 more so we will be putting 2 and 2 together here, here and there. David cannot be marked and what will be entertaining is when marshalers start bumping into wan another as he gives 'em the slip. Paudie will look nice drawing 2 defenders into outer-space, then he crosses the galaxy and they have to stop to think - in for a penny, in for a pound; mad, they laugh, then you win. As we speak you can sense them pair of hoors are scheming as they rest their weary bones. That PM is moving towards impact sub status is a reflection of how good we are and it happens every player, well those who are good enough to last 10 years. Remember it was his cutie interplay that won it for us last year - that had experience written all over it, he trusted himself to land a miracle. I waz Sammy I wouldn't be getting worried of being evicted away from the equator.
