There doesn't seem to be a thread for general non-Kerry chat about the football leagues.

Ok, Mayo/Galway. Poor enough, I thought, given the conditions were decent for the time of year. First half was ok, fizzled out after that.
Galway looked the more cohesive side with Mayo relying on individual efforts to get a result. Nice score to level it at the end, though it was well over the time. Dublin Joe should have blown it up when Mayo lost possession; I suspect the Galway man who kicked the ball away assumed he would.

Fitness and sharpness wasn't there but still an entertaining enough watch. Tough to draw all that much in the way of the championship from it. Have to say I was very disappointed with the RTE pundit's verdict on the Ruane black card decision. Off the ball the ball away out the field shouldered Kelly in the back and then got tangled up with him and then pulled him to ground. If that wasn't a stone wall black card I don't know what was. The RTE pundits going on about it being a soft black card itself rather than pointing out the reckless stupidity of Ruane (who had a good game apart from this daftness) Far too often off-the-ball nonsense like this gets the close to pointless two yellows/cut out the messing response rather than punishing the instigator/protecting the innocent party.

Was Kelly trying to get in on the play or was it genuinely off the ball as in independent of the play. I don't think in general that a black card in such scenarios is within the spirit of the rules (although it may be in the letter of them).

Dublin looked poor enough yesterday, Kildare could have won that game and if that goal went in instead of off the post it could have been a famous scrap for the lilliwhites!
Can't see Dublin not making it out of D2, realistically Cork and Derry would have to beat them for it to be a possibility.
Limerick got an awful hiding yesterday and they're next up for the capital's boys so should be a comfortable win

Should have been clearer - the ball was dead and the keeper was in the process of getting the ball back on the pitch/setting up for the kickout.
The ball being in play doesn't make any difference in my opinion - if anything I would say the fact that the ball wasn't in play makes it even worse. It's one thing to commit foul play when there is action occuring but when the ball is dead makes it even scummier.

Yes, wasn’t a black card IMO. Also thought Galway were very lucky with the last 2 frees. Glynn pulled the tacklers hand into him and the last one that Eoin Finnerty got was very soft. Also looked like AOS pulled McDaid down on top of himself for his black card. It was an entertaining game though.

Mayo started slow v Tyrone but again got the goals and pushed on. How did they manage to get back to back home games in Castlebar?

He was been fouled so got advantage, and rightly so That’s not the rule. If you’re being fouled it doesn’t allow you to take additional steps. The ref should be blowing up and giving a free in but they never seem to do it.

Monaghan also had their last 2 matches at home and Armagh have their next 2 at home. It happens every year. Didn't we play at home in consecutive rounds against Dublin and Donegal last year?

And there's definitely no intent to hop or solo the ball, just hare away until you're in shooting position. Really, the defender has no chance here.

Last year I posted that Dean Rock was scoring practically nothing from play in the championship. He actually didn't want to be in possession of the ball and would point to another player if someone was about to pass to him. Dessie Farrell kept picking him probably for his exceptional accuracy from frees. Dessie could not be blamed for Rock's dis-improvement because a player in his thirties who stays on a year too long can often be unexpectedly exposed in the white heat of battle.
I was sure a new free taker would be produced during the league. That hasn't happened. Dessie Rock is taking frees, penalties and 45's. Costello does take the odd free but Rock is the main man. Dessie can be blamed this time. It may be an indication of lack of talent available. This evenings game away to Derry may be very revealing.

Derry fairly tepid so far, very surprising in front of a sellout home crowd.

They woke up, almost threw it away with a stupid off the ball block and then came back to win with last kick by Rodgers. Enjoyable last 20mins. Shadow boxing for the D2 final.

Did I just imagine this...? Derry player, near then end, with a free 25 ms or so from goal in a central position, kicks it backwards. Presumably he's the freetaker, it wasn't a mark. It ends up with a shot by another guy from a much worse position, which is missed. Dublin go down the other end and score. Like, wtf?

The free was a couple of metres outside D so probably 35m.

He should be given another ten years.

Really enjoyed that game,
When Derry lost the fear of Dublin they showed what they are capable of.
They have the best midfield in the country too.
Great seeing Dublin get caught like that..

Lots of people think 2023 will be Dublin's last dance, but I think Dublin have gone back a bit and we'll soon realise that the 2nd half of the 2022 semi-final was their last dance. Looking at their game v Mayo in 21, Kerry in 22 and today, Dublin have gone back to their old failings of going missing for 35 minutes. I for one would be glad to see the return of Ciarán Whelan-syndrome Dublin!

I think if they have McCaffery and Mannion along with the older lads fit then there's a championship still in them.. provided they get no injuries. There problem last year is the same this year in their strength in depth isint there. They are really in trouble next year because I see no replacement for Fitzsimons,Mccarthy, Rock who'll likely retire this year.

Funny enough when he started making Dublin team first I thought he was very average and being kept for his frees. Then he became a top scorer from play and was a great servant for Dublin. Now the wheel seems to have gone full circle again and his free taking is keeping him on the team. That said a top free taker is worth their weight in gold. We should know. I did nt see game this eve but was listening on radio so not sure how Rock did. From my listening it was a game of two halves with Derry the second half team. That's unusual for Dublin. However I think both Derry and Dublin will be promoted. I still think Dubs will be a different animal come championship. Rock can’t even score frees anymore, missed some very kickable ones in last year’s semi final and it has been similar so far in the league.

I'm not wrting Dublin off yet, but I just watched the Derry and I fail to see how they managed to lose that game. Clare should have beaten and the same for Cork. The first time they play a team of division 1 standard they lose. Even more worrying for Dublin is the amount of players coming out of retirement and not making a difference. Are Dublin gone? Judging by the league you'd have to argue that they are. Personally I don't see how Dublin can improve when almost all other teams will see lots of improvement. Very worrying for Dublin, but perhaps the same as Kerry's golden years: it's tough to admit they are over Maybe that means Kerry's golden age can start now

You are judging Dublin by league performances. Are you forgetting our displays v Donegal and Mayo? and we are expecting to win All Ireland. Many wrote Dublin off last year and we scraped by them. Many wrote Tyrone off the year before and they won All Ireland. Dublin are getting too much credit for losing to Kerry, should also bear in mind that Dublin were lucky to still be in the game. Only for the missed penalty and O'Brien missing a simple goal chance Kerry would have been 12 points up.
