Massive year for this young Kerry, 16 great games, enjoyed every one of them immensely. Just a pity we have to wait nearly five months to hit the road again. Kerry very definitely the second best team in the country now with a bit still to do topple the Dubs. Thanks to Peter and the lads for the immense enjoyment throughout the year. Wear the heads held high this morning.

What a sickener, a ball we should have easily claimed and driven on in search of the lead for the first time, ended up in our own net for one of the softest goals you will ever see. We tried, valiantly, to rescue the situation but the energy required meant we were left chasing shadows as darkness and the final whistle drew in. We needed a goal or two but didn't get one. We had a couple of chances but we didn't take them. Dublin were on their game and they squeezed the life out of us once they got that 3 point lead. A fantastic year comes to a shuddering halt, Dublin have their 5 in a row and we have the hope that the promise we have shown this year will bear fruit next year. The players must be absolutely shattered, you would have to feel for them. A league and all Ireland final reached and nothing to show for it. Such is sport I suppose.

I don't post very often so I want to thank all the contributors on this page for making the season so enjoyable and informative. I cannot fault our lads for the sheer effort put in over the season. It was incredible. The young lads have been on some learning curve and adapted brilliantly each step of the way. It's a pity we didn't have composure in front of goals yesterday. If one of the goal chances went in the game would have been very different. I was very disappointed to see us concede the kickouts by giving the Dubs an extra man at the back. We let them carry the ball to our fifty with relative ease like the Tyrones and Donegals but that just doesn't work. Dublin managed that tactic with ease. I thought I was wrong at half time due to the scoreline but the second half showed the Dubs never felt the squeeze higher up the pitch and they won comfortably. Having said that maybe Keane knew we didn't have the fitness to pressure Dublin high up the pitch. I still think we should have gotten their faces from the off. I think both management and players were a little short on self belief that they could boss the game or win well. Hopefully that will come in time. Mar fhocail scoir, I am very grateful to be from Kerry. We are a mighty county for being at the business end year in year out and it gives us all so much to talk about and look forward to. Thanks again to all the posters here on this forum. Well done to the Dubs. Please God we'll be back!

Annascaul, seeing as how you really know your stuff and have anointed this current Dublin team, can you answer the below questions in relation to other great teams over the years:
How does the 3-in-a-row team Dublin team of 1897 -99 compare to the 3-in-a-row Dublin team of 1906 – 08? Please answer with reference to other 3-in-a-rows won by other counties, such as Kerry 1984 – 86 and Galway of the 60’s. Who was better - the Kerry team which achieved the double in 1913 – 14 or the Kerry team of our era in 2006 – 07 who achieved the same feat?
If you want to try the Honours paper, can you also do a comparison of the three other teams who achieved the 4 in-a-row before Dublin went one better last night? In your opinion, is Wexford’s 4 in-a-row more notable (or devalued) because it was achieved in an era of major change and upheaval in this country? I await these answers. P.S. if you can answer these I have loads more to ask.
Of course you can’t answer and neither can anybody else - objectively. As Veteran put it recently, who was a better hurler – Setanta or Shefflin? Plenty of articles will be written eulogising this Dublin team in the coming weeks and months, deservedly so. Dublin may very well be the GOAT in Gaelic football and I take my hat off to them. I never thought I would see a 5-in-a-row in such a competitive sport, played by amateurs for the love of the game and where they are from, but they have achieved something special. We are also living in a different era of sport here. It is now a “Squad game”.
Kerry got agonisingly close to the same feat with more or less the same 15 men for those five seasons. They also had to deal with arguably their best forward having a disastrous injury that year and a teak-tough defender having a career ending broken leg. The concept of “Sports Psychology” didn’t exist in that era. They lost by a point. Kerry were very unlucky in 1982. Dublin have been lucky. If the Ref (Deegan, I think) spots Bastic picking the ball off of the ground in the last minute of the game that was a tap-over free and (possibly) an All-Ireland to Mayo. Mayo certainly had their chances. Neither Kerry nor Dublin played well in 2015 IMO, but Dublin played a little better and came through on what was a horrible day for a game of football.
The “5” was never written in the stars but today it feels like the more they win the harder it will be for anyone to eventually beat them. We will see a few retirements but we also know that Dublin will have some great young players to step into the breach so they are going nowhere. Collectively they are still very fresh. They have a massive bank of big-game experience now and for me that was probably the biggest difference on the night – composure when it really mattered...
You are wrong when you say I really know my stuff. I make no such claims. However you are correct when you say "I can't" answer your questions. My view is based on no more than the fact that 5>4. Whilst that may not get to the truth, you can't get much more objective.

Had a look at the goal again when I got home, just to confirm what I thought in real time. Yes David should have caught it. But Murchan took possession of the ball on his own 65. He took his shot for the goal just outside the 13m line, travelling close to 70m. And he managed to cover this distance with two hops and a solo of the ball. After his last hop he took possession of the ball on the edge of the D and covered the 20m to where he took his shot with no play on the ball. I know the Dubs were unhappy with Lane at half time but can't have any complaints after that missed call. Over the two games we lost 3 of the 4 throw ins and conceded 1-02 directly from them, I'm not really one to complain about refs - however it is remarkable how Murchan travelled from the 45 line to the 13 using only one hop. It is only watching it now do I notice this - in play I was thinking: "great finish". Watching it again I wouldn't say it angers me.

The goal was a major score in the context of the game but the ref should have called him back and give a free out for over carrying- missed the same foul when Connolly drive through late & missed O’Callaghans pick off the ground following Shane Ryan’s save - all were big calls but felt Dublin would have won nevertheless.
We were brilliant in the first half & having taken the best the had to offer, I felt we could win - the goal of course changed things but after Dublin stretched the lead to 4 we hit three unanswered points to reduce the deficit to one point - our shooting then became wayward & I feel that it was shot selection rather than good defending that was the cause; Diarmuid O’Connor essayed a shot from the Cusack side when McCarthy had fallen but he had other options; likewise Paul G played around with the ball @ 1-16 to 0-15 when a point seemed on offer - O’Brien shot for a goal when a point or a pass to a better placed colleague seemed a better option - just lacking a bit of experience & composure .
All in all a huge year for team & management- both will have learned plenty & NO TEAM in the country has progressed as much as we have - a winter of strength & conditioning, maybe some additions to the squad & we will be hunting for honors again in 2020.
Thanks to all, I am enjoying watching Kerry football again.

Do you ever sit back for a minute and think how ridiculous you are at times. Do you have even a shred of self awareness. Seriously. I'm giving you a compliment. I dont need "compliments" from you or likes or anything in fact. By your own admission you know fcuk all about the sport but you sit here all day everyday like some examiner passing judgement on what people write. Total lack of self awareness being displayed. Cop on.

Agree with all positive comments. It seems most have same opinions about Murchans goal flattened the spirit. He is a Dublin defender why where are the Kerry forwards who can do or at least attempt that type of attack regularly. Fortune favours the brave, Dublin deserves the Sam, they youngish it true but that killer instinct that past Lerry players had is missing. Fitness standards up for sure but that devilish determined bravery is missing regards going for goal. Gooch had it.

Thats a sobering thought. Cluxton remains the key man. If he goes the gap might narrow.

Well lads I’ll keep it short, all this sh1t about Donie Buckley being this fantastic backs coach fell flat on its hole, Kerry backs were like a basketball team afraid to get in there and tackle just marking spaces ffs. You would have to wonder what peter Keane’s tactics were in my eyes anyway ala pump high ball into Paul with 2/ 3 guys on him and nobody there for da break and a man that changed the last two games sitting on he’s hole on the sideline. TWIN TOWERS This guy posts for the first time 2 days ago, claiming Kerry would win by 12-13 points. Then follows up with 2 more posts today, abusing the Kerry management. Troll or moron lads?

On reflection we really were second best for most of that game. Shane Ryan was my man of the match from a Kerry perspective. Murphy, Clifford, Barry all did well. How in the name of god can you run from the opposing 65 to score a goal and not a glove laid on him. Why did we not press the kickouts? Why did we persist with daft high balls into the square. The starting of Diarmuid OConnor was her peculiar and I'm afraid should have been changed at HT. I'm very proud of this group and it's been a great summer but serious learning need to be taken from that last night.

Paul Murphy was marking the D during the first half so Cluxton had lots of options for finding his man. Paul wasnt in the sweeper position for the goal though so i assume there was a change of tactics at halftime. Not sure.

I don’t think there was any great change at this stage. The throws ins need to be handled differently anyway to the rest of the game from a tactical perspective

If I'm remembering correctly Kerry won most of the throw-ins in the NFL when TW went to 9 at the start of those games.

Jesus all, there’s a clown of a dub grew up here in annascaul, he played most of his football with us and friends with us for years, yesterday after the game he posted to most stupid comment I have ever seen and for that I can’t stand him but I hope that’s not like all the dubs if so I believe there worse. Anyway great year it was and I’m proud of all the kerry team, I have come to terms for now in we’re going to be bridesmaids to Dublin for many more years unless we get big mark o connor back from aus (he’s half annascaul man) we need barry John Keane Back and kerry management need to watch both the county championship and underdogs v closely see if we can pick up anything else

Yesterday saw to excellent teams battle it out. Dublin were by far the better side in the second half and could really have one by more. Kerry played some excellent stuff in the first half. They really do have the makings of a brilliant and successful side and their style of football, similar to Dublin, is fantastic to watch unlike that of Donegal or Tyrone for example.
Murchan, Howard and O'Callaghan are real finds for Dublin. O'Callaghan is so powerful as is Howard.
I am delighted Dublin won the five in a row but I also acknowledge the fact that this Kerry side will be a force to be reckoned with in the future and good luck to them. Their style of play is divine.

When all the details are analyzed and the ref quizzed for his inability to count steps it comes down to one simple issue for me - we need to be better at converting our chances. This one key difference cost us big time and when two teams are within touching distance of each other (yes Dublin are marginally ahead of us, but only marginally) it is the deciding difference. The good news is we can improve further and we can up or conversion rate - a long winter ahead but it's not a dark one like in previous defeats.

In fairness I don't see many blaming the ref, they accept Dublin were the better side. However a feature of any game where people do blame the ref is that you nearly always see that the losing team kicked a world of wides.

This tells the story of the loss

Congratulations to Dublin on retaining the All Ireland and winning a remarkable 5-in-row.
Dublin we salute you, you’ve set new standards and changed the game, and changed they way success is absorbed while just pushing on relentlessly for more. Led by Jim Gavin, his Dublin teams have done a remarkable job and no one can deny them their undoubted greatness.
I grew up from a young boy to a teenager during Kerry’s golden years privileged to have witnessed greatness in action. As we entered the famine years we consoled ourselves with endless re-watches of Kerry’s Golden Years on video, it came to my mind last night, as I watched history unfold and what we thought for years was impossible became possible with the historical achievement of 5-in-row. Mick O’ had told us he didn’t think it would ever be possible to get a team like his own in any county let alone down in Kerry and no one doubted his words. In 2009 as we handed Dublin yet another lesson in footballing craft – who amongst us truly saw this level of success for Dublin coming to them at that time? Its been a remarkable decade for them and truly the decade of the Dubs.
I’ve never seen a team as well coached, methodical or individually as intelligent on the ball as this Dublin team. We could argue subjectively and try to compare individual talent from different teams and eras (an impossible task) but this continually evolving Dublin team while they do have some outstanding individual talent are truly much greater than the sum of its parts. It’s not just the way they patiently hold the possession and probe but they wait until they get the right shooter on the ball. A great example was the Paul Mannion point in the second half after Dublin had played keep-ball for about five minutes. You could feel the energy drain from Kerry and brains scramble as Kerry sought desperately to get a goal afterward when just tapping over a point was still an option. Kerry snatched at chances prematurely while Dublin waited and made sure.
In the end, Dublin won comprehensively and a 6-point victory was their biggest winning margin in a final during this decade. It’s happened too often in the recent past and I’ve been a begrudger myself who claimed the final score doesn’t reflect the match but I’m afraid in this case the winning margin most definitely does and Dublin were well worth every one of those 6 winning points.
Kerry are in a place where I genuinely didn’t expect us to be at the outset of 2019. I thought and would have felt before this championship our Kerry team were at least another two seasons away (including this one) from seriously challenging Dublin. In truth, our rate of progression this year has been remarkable and the Kerry team and management gave it everything, so truly we can ask no more. Thank you so much to our Kerry players, Peter Keane and his management team and everyone involved for a remarkable 2019. Keep your heads up lads and keep pushing forward, you are doing Kerry proud and even better days are ahead. The Kerry football story continues and a new chapter will be written during a new decade that will shortly be upon us.
Despite the usual sniping about our fullback line, I thought they did as well as humanely possible over both games with Dublin. If you limit men as good as Con and Mannion once in possession to 3 or 4 points from play, you’re doing OK. The Dublin goals came from wingbacks in both games and the Kerry backs held out the Dublin forwards from scoring a goal and not too many teams have done that this year or will do so again in the future.
Also another take away is that physically on the whole, we are a couple of years away yet from Dublin. One could clearly see in the line up and parade around the field that Dublin’s players had broader backs and lots of muscle while many of the Kerrymen looked like young colts still in development, which they are. Kerry didn’t have enough strength yet to consistently push up on Dublin and initiate the rip and strip tackle that Mayo employed for a number of years. Dublin knew it especially after the first game and exploited this fact. Dublin were far more patient, held the ball confident that it was not getting ripped from them by a physically less able team at the moment but we can hope this advantage given time will soon change. Kerry are coming but make no mistake Dublin ain’t going away either and we are going to see some titanic struggles between Dublin and Kerry in the 20s’ – may we all live to see it.
UP THE KINGDOM!

A fantastic year..played 16 games, won 12,drew 1 ,lost 3.Have a team to keep us going to Croker for the foreseeable future.Absolutely gutting to lose yesterday, the goal was the difference in the end.Its a mighty small margin that makes winners and losers but have no doubt about it we will be back.Have to suck up yesterday and use it as future fuel.Well done for a mighty years entertainment.
