And the GAA's solution to this was to prevent SOS and DC from playing intercounty U20 last summer to prevent burnout!!!! Box ticked we have done something to resolve player welfare issues - BS of the highest order.

Sincere thanks Mick for posting that video. I can only imagine what that service means to our exiles. As regards our present defenders in relation to our defenders of 2009, perhaps by year’s end some of them , with guidance from Donie, may warrant comparison with the likes of Marc etc. But of course the likes of Marc are team of the century material. A couple approaching that status may suffice. Time will tell. Exactly, we are talking about some of the best defenders to ever play the game, who learned their trade marking man to man, and some of these performances over the years were memorable: Tom Sullivan on B Brogan or Conor Mortimer; Aidan OMahoney on Michael Murphy, Marc OSe on Alan Brogan and many other marquee forwards. Keith Higgins v JOD in 2014 was worth the price of admission alone. Problem is with Dublin, who do you mark? Mannion has serious scoring potential and has to be contained. Same with Dean Rock, though he cannot burn a man like Mannion, he will kick points all day if given space. Kilkenny is a playmaker and score taker, and has to be shut down. Man to man is the best way (or only way!) to curb Fenton. James McCarthy has to be picked up when he charges forward. Wing forward on McCaffrey has to do the same. Con OCallaghan is dangerous. If Connolly comes back and regains form, he cannot be ignored. I guess that is one of the things that make the Dubs so good; they have so many weapons.

Box ticked we have done something to resolve player welfare issues - BS of the highest order. I don't think playing games is the biggest issue with burnout. It's the amount of training, travel and lack or rest/recuperation around those games that is the bigger issue. If he's having to train with different teams as well as playing then that would be an issue.

With the Sigerson semi finals due to be played next weekend ( 16th) & a final the following Weds , Seán O’Shea & Brian O’Braglaoi could be asked to play 3 games in 8 days!

Galway are in the same boat with Michael Daly, Cooke, Darcy and Molloy playing with NUIG next weekend and Liam Silke with UCD. Molloy and Silke will probably be asked to play 2 games next weekend with Corofin and NUIG/UCD. Madness.

Surely peter keane will rest the two boys job done we are safe now from relegation? Leave the lads off that weekend dont even bring them to tuam. Why not start griffen or gavin crowley centre back and move morley back to the corner give tommy walsh a start ? Plenty of options maybe geaney taking the frees will improve his confidence, we are in bonus territory now time for experimentation imo

Great performance...the most important item being that the team played with confidence in themselves. That management can instill such confidence in a short period of time is heartening...same as your man in Old Trafford until tonight.
It is very much worth noting two scores in particular...the first and the last, both coming when the teams were level.
First score came off the outside of Jack Sherwood's boot and the last score came from the fist of Peter Crowley. So what, you may say...well, one was wearing number 3 and the other number 2. Allowing players off the leash to bomb forward in a controlled manner (others fill the vacated defensive slots) is very encouraging.
The template recently seemed to develop a good defense first and then work on the defense going forward. Has this team combined the two into one? Good test coming up in Tuam...a dour struggle predicted there. And Monaghan the following week will also be a good game to see unfold.
There are green and gold shoots sprouting this spring...whether the harvest will abound in August 2019 is another question, but the signs are good.

I know he got a goal v Mayo last year but is he known to have a scoring threat from the half back line? Has he ever played elsewhere for his club.

Tomas with a similar message as Aidan O'Rourke regarding Kerry's defence www.independent.ie/sport/gaelic-games/gaelic-football/s-kerry-need-designated-manmarker-37807004.htmlMayo had/have a collection of marquee defenders and went toe to toe with Dublin. Kerry are the reverse, have marquee forwards but have question marks in defence and maybe also at midfield. Forwards are not enough without the springboard in place from defence. Plenty of forward laden Kerry teams have lost finals in recent times, '02, 05,'08, '11 for example. Donie Buckley will have learned a lot during his time in Mayo, in particular about Mayo's shortcomings in attack. It will be interesting to see can Kerry get the same traction from 1-9 as Mayo did v Dublin in those finals and matt that to an attack that can get Kerry over the line. The modern game at the top table is all about transitioning seamlessly from defence to attack to defence. You need quality all over the field. Dublin have it in abundance. Conversely the game becomes more unwatchable from the chasing pack down through the tiers and is not a spectator sport for the neutral anymore where the game becomes ultra defensive with no ambition in attack. Has anyone got Brian Fenton's stats from last weekends game? He seemed to play a pile of ball.

Jason foley is certainly able to man mark players out of the game anyway but we need more than 1.

Stats from Dont Foul 1.12 from possession gained from their Kerrys own kickout! Not retaining enough possession from their own kickout was Kerrys biggest downfall under EF in my view.

Watched the game again last night a few things stood out for me.
1.Murphy absolutely destroyed costello the point from play he got was griffins fault. 2. Jack sherwood was better than id thought he was on the day great addition 3.stephen o brien was very unlucky to not get man of the match he ripped eoin murchan to shreds was everywhere 4. Geaney shouldve been called ashore earlier he was gassed not sure he has the engine to be chasing back so much we are perhaps lacking inside forwards at the moment without Clifford and JOD 5. Gavin o brien has the makings of a great midfielder he is very mobile that ball he got over mccarthy and drove past him with pace was incredible. 6. Going to be very hard for michael Burns to get back in that team Moynihan and SOB look very hard to drop and Gavin o brien offers something different.

5. Gavin o brien has the makings of a great midfielder he is very mobile that ball he got over mccarthy and drove past him with pace was incredible. The aesthetic beauty of the accurate kick by Shane Ryan and Gavin oBrien's spring and fetch is a perfect example of why kickouts should all go beyond the 45. In seconds the ball was into the forwards. It is an adornment of the game and it behoves the GAA to ensure that we see more of it.

The young Dublin keeper would probably have struggled the last day if a compulsory kickout beyond the 50 was the ruling.

Id say moran and barry are nailed on starters with a wing forward like o brien helping out. Then around the 50-55 minute you have the likes of Griffen and maybe A.Spillane coming in adding fresh energy. Personally i think this is a great strategy i think Dublin are the only team in the country that we would need to man mark a mf Fenton is different class to everyone else and is so vital to Dublin now that Flynn and Connolly arent starters. Put Barry on Fenton until he cant give anymore then mark Griffen when he does.

I know the above article is by Quirke and he is obviously trying to talk down Kerry’s progress but what is more interesting are the sound bytes coming from Dublin journalists, etc.
The same sentiment is being expressed- it’s only February, Jim won’t care, etc. It’s almost like they are trying to convince themselves that the girl they fancied and turned them down wasn’t that nice anyway.
They are a little bit spooked now and we have shown them “ that we are still here”.

I was also engrossed in the heat of battle and what struck me when I saw the recording was the subs pattern by Dublin. Gavin didn't want to lose this one and threw everything at it. Subs for Dublin: P Andrews for Lowndes (half time); J McCaffrey for Cooper (47); M D MacAuley for Gavin (62); K McManamon for Rock (62); P Flynn for N Scully (63);

After 60 minutes Kerry were 4 points ahead so what went wrong after that? Ten years ago the big players like Darragh, Colm and Declan would have looked for the ball and made sure it wasnt given away cheaply.
The Dublin comeback was down to huge workrate by them but mainly due to some poor decision making and poor execution of passes by Kerry.
62 mins...Crowley overhits to SOB. This is when the red card happened but possession is lost when ball is thrown up.
65 mins...Moran hits a sideline to no one...Fenton points as a result
67 mins...Paul Murphy hits a 50-50 ball towards SOB...free out... point ensues from a free to Dublin
68 mins...Griffin receives a short kickout and kicks it to a blue shirt...point by Costello
69 mins...Tom Sullivan kicks a 50-50 ball towards SOB...free out...mark by Andrews which he misses
71 mins...poor kickout direct to McCaffret...leads to equaliser.
I imaging PK will be working on closing out games with them especially when a man up.

Some fair points there and I'd agree Gavin tried to pull it out of the fire by introducing established players. I think Gavin hates losing any game and his record in the league is testament to that. But that doesn't mean he has altered his planning or particularly targetted this game. Plenty of times during his tenure Dublin fought tooth and nail to get something when it looked a lost cause, as witnessed by a good number of draws in last years campaign. The big difference this year was that Dublin had both Kerry and Monaghan away in early stages of league. No easy task, last year it was Kildare and Donegal. Easier games, proof being that both went down. So nothing is particularly different this year, apart from coming out the wrong side of 2 close games. Overall, Kerry just shaded it on balance of play. Genuinely think if Kerry didnt win last weekend with everything stacked in their favour it would be a huge ask for them to beat Dublin in the summer. So they've now got a reference point and that is fair enough. But its not a myth that Dublin were on holiday till early Jan. Strangely, it was Kerry lads struggling through the last 10 minutes while Dublin piled forward. This with 14 men, and even some die hards here recognise Mick Fitz 1st yellow a joke. Other thing to note was Kerry conversion rate was almost flawless. Big ask to manage that again. Id be hopeful that Dublin string 4 wins together now, and if the stars align they might end up having another go at the young pretenders in the league final. A game to savour.
