Should have, could have, might have, Dubs stole it, ref robbed us, weather didn't suit our game, linesmen got the calls wrong, ref was influenced, sideline got it wrong, Dubs are just fitter etc. Mods, please kill this thread. Kerry football is being denigrated as we speak. Why do you bother reading it then? This is from a Kerry point of view and people are fully entitled to air their opinions in the game. I can't for the life of me understand how people have even the time, not to mind the interest in posting on other county forums. Kerry football is hardly being denigrated by people expressing their opinions online. That's a new one on me.

Something I've thought abour re county players , like Kerry after this defeat , how do you start all over again in Jan [ or maybe earlier ] the hard slog of training , training , training , with matches in poor conditions etc. One reason I admire Mayo.

The short answer to that one must be hunger for the Celtic crosses. To get one if you haven't one already and to get more if they have. Even if they lose in a given year, counties like Dublin and Kerry have a realistic expectation of success each year. That makes it hard to understand why Mayo keep coming back year after year.

I think Gough got enough important decisions wrong for me to consider he had a poor match. It has been said before but I'll echo anyway that regarding the Crowley incident even if he was unsighted (I'll give him a pass here) he had a duty of care to stop the play. It simply was not good enough to allow play to continue when a player's welfare was at stake. I have seen quite enough of Mr Gough this year. He refereed the the Hogan Cup Final in spring and fairly annoyed both sets of supporters and players. The very next day he was in Tralee to referee our NFL game with Cork. Some of his decisions that day were baffling to say the least. Again both sets of players were left exasperated. So I'll be happy not to see this individual again.
He certainly annoyed the northern team by sending off their best player-a decision that left the TG4 commmentators mystified and then not giving a pretty blatant penalty at the end that would have put them ahead. Btw the Kerry teams won both those games- I think Mick Shields was sent off in the Tralee game.

Mayo are possibly at least as good as Kerry and this makes the upcoming final interesting. Mayo might have a little bit more going for them in the middle third than Kerry.

I said before the Dublin v Kerry game last week that there had only been a bounce of a ball between Dublin, Kerry,Mayo teams over the last 5 years. Again last week a bounce of a ball, Dublin v Mayo could easily go right to the wire. Thing is nobody knows. We don't have a league where teams hands are shown week in and out to make a proper judgement on where a team is at. Kerry fans were kept in the dark all year , no battle through the championship to judge lads, no training sessions to view, only the hope that things would click on the day , this off course left them fearing for the worst if thing didn't click, ultimately Dublin won, but it was as you were for the last few years with very little between the two heavyweights as they hung onto each other in the final round trading blows.
Dublin, Kerry, Mayo is more like the try nations recently than a championship. Every year we all gear up for either 1 or possibly 2 mammoth games for our respective counties , with nothing concrete to base our optimism on,only the hope that we will have improved from the previous year. Problem is we never know if the others has improved more from the previous battle until the game is on . Dublin v Mayo will be the same conundrum.

On review of last Sunday:The Kerry team seemed to have no strategy on kick-outs in the first-half. Our most successful period for kick-outs was in the second-half when Dublin effectively picked Shane Enright as where the kick-outs went. Aidan Moynihan was Kerry's free player but he did not seem to think it was his job to make himself available for kick-outs. Colm Cooper has been the best Kerry player I have ever seen. However his value to the Kerry team has been limited in the last 2 years. Bringing him on with 20 minutes to go would have been ideal. He had little effect on the game. Why did Kieran Donaghy spend nearly half his game-time at midfield? His greatest value was at full-forward. We gave away a good few sloppy frees on Sunday which cost us dearly. This should not happen in top inter-county team. All 4 forward subs had no major influence on the game. Dublin did not play particularly well on Sunday. 4 out of 6 Dublin forwards had very average games and were taken off. They did not get any dominance at mid-field. Eamon Fitzmaurice is, by all accounts, a nice man. He has not been able to beat Dublin in 3 championships and we have been especially weak in the last 10 minutes under him. Kerry have had very little opposition outside of Dublin. There is no evidence that he has the tactical nous to beat Dublin. He has also been poor in bringing through players. Time for somebody else to take charge. No point in spending another 2 years watching Dublin beat us, saying to ourselves that Dublin are a very good team.

Eamon got everything spot on bar geaney substitute. Donaghy going in and out got Cian o sullivan etc out of their comfort zone. Players coming through ? Name 3 players who were better than players who played for Kerry the last day? Dublin did win midfield battle because kelly for some reason kicked ball out to our Midfield when they were 3 dub men around 1 Kerry man. Eamon took on the job when we were in transition. He's done a fantastic job. Give him credit. Any other manager with this crop of players from 2013 to now would not have got no where near Eamons record. Very good tactically. Btw he's not perfect. Taking off geaney and donoghue last year. But he's the best man for the job in what is a very modern professional duty.

I think Mayo would have beaten Kerry The Mayo that beat Tyrone and Tipp would not have beaten the Kerry that lost to Dublin. The Mayo that turns up to the Final could be a very different proposition.

Kerry lost because our inspirational leaders' legs had too much mileage. The year we won they were the drivers, although some years more so than others. The signs 'were there is 14 when KD was one of a few veterans to the fore, last year was a step down and that we were able to put the Dubs to the pin of their collar is testament to how formidable we are on other departments.
How many maturing players will be leaders next year? Go through the match day panel and tell me who will lead as the Paidis, Jack O'Sheas, Seamus Moynihans, Darraghs, KDs, etc have done in the past? Look at who took the game by the scruff for the Dubs?

It could be that our game brought on the Dubs to the extent that it gets them over the line although Mayo aren't without their chances. Previous close calls will keep the Dubs focused while it will give Mayo rightful claim, moreover as we exposed the Dubs at times though Mayo have lower mileage. It might be another great game.

So another Championship ends for us, not with the glory we hunted but with glory nonetheless. I hope now Mickmack that you understand a little more about why I anticipated us winning this match (even though we ultimately fell short)and why I didn't go to specifics. Football is not played on paper or in the pages of internet forums. In advance of the game, everyone wanted reasoned, rational arguments to support a Kerry victory and when nobody could propose any of acceptable substance, the only reasoned, rational answer was that there was simply no way that Kerry could win. Now you can say that they didn't win and of course you are right but that they came so close and could so very easily now be preparing for another All-Ireland Final cannot simply be swept aside. They brought honour to the county yet again and if they died with their boots on as they did, then so be it.
I have waited a few days before commenting so as to hopefully gain some perspective. In the immediate aftermath of the game, I like many others on here would have liked to have a word with Mr.Gough. He certainly hindered our cause. Having watched it again, apart from the Peter Crowley instance (which is simply not acceptable when the safety of a player is concerned), the 'steal' by Fenton of the throw ball could not have been missed by Mr.Gough. In general the 50/50 calls did not go our way. Having said all that, it happens and as others have said, a more 'neutral' (in the sense of not working/living in either of the two competing counties at the very least) referee would certainly help. However, we made too many errors, not least in the last ten minutes and could, with a bit more composure have closed out the game regardless of refereeing issues. I know the arguments being put forward for the Paul Geaney withdrawal and I still don't find them acceptable. Playing from a position of fear has never worked as a winning formula. Dublin were the better team without a doubt in my opinion. But the better team doesn't always win and we had it within our grasp with a little more confidence and flair required.
We will lose up to six players I believe now and yet, we are still likely to return to at least an All-Ireland semi-final next year. The future is bright. Whether we go forward with EF or not remains to be seen. If I was a betting man, I would suspect not and that Diarmuid Murphy may be donning the Banisteoir bib next year but I've been wrong before!
I saw where Eugene McGee was criticising the late changes to both teams, that this was unfair to both teams, supporters deserve better and the GAA need to do more to prevent recurrence. I think Eugene needs to wake up a little. For me, if anything it simply added to the excitement and anticipation immediately prior to the match starting. Time to leave the dry reasoning aside Eugene and try to see the game for what it is, a source of great excitement light and brightness in all our lives (or maybe just mine....). I would agree with another poster though regarding the Sile Seoige nonsense and the artificial noise generation. Somebody needs to make that stop!
Finally, a note of acknowledgement to Dublin supporters. As I trudged up from the front of the Cusack Stand to the exit, they were by and large very gracious in victory (I wasn't expecting that to be honest). One man in particular, will a child on his shoulders all decked out in blue, stuck out his hand to sympathise and mentioned our minors. That too was unexpected but much appreciated. I moved from having a head full of rants about Mr.Gough ( he wasn't at the time in those internal conversations being referred to as Mr.Gough)to a calmer disposition, acknowledging that, at the end of it all, while it is a beautiful game, it is still just a game. For us, we go back to our normal lives but the players, who gave and have given so much to this game, that's where the real pain is this week.
With an All-Ireland minor final to be played yet and a county championship to be contested, the year is far from done, footballing-wise. For many of us though, it won't be long before we're planning trips to Ballybofey, Omagh etc as it starts all over again. Don't rule us out of causing an upset and winning the All-Ireland in 2017. Theres more to football than cold rational reasoning!

Yes Joxer, I thought Magee's article was daft as well but it got lost among the rest of the analysis. His reasoning seemed to be that "dummy teams" we're disrespecting the punters who paid €5 for a programme and managers should be prohibited from playing teams other than selected. I know we didn't like it when our Rebel cousins did this but it is within the rules and as long as it is it will happen. Anyway the sanction above would penalise last minute injuries and I personally never felt aggrieved when the team lining out did not match up with the programme. If you look back at what actually happened there were 3 player changes for Kerry and two for Dublin - not so much dummy teams as phantom players. Other codes can delay naming teams until the very last minute - it's no great matter.

Now there's an interesting stat, is the life span shorter with Cody, how come he has such a strong pipeline?, he has moved on talent that GAA football managers would dream of having and I include Dwyer, Harte, Boylan, Heffo and the rest in that. Did anyone of them ever spring on rookies on a big day - Dwyer had no choice but to spring a young team one day and they bate the Dubs home, proving that necessity is the mother of invention!

Theres more to football than cold rational reasoning! Yip, I'd favour excitement v what Magee says and which can't be a rule anyway. I'd like to know the story behind Geaney moreover as similar with Galvin last year but Éamonn has served us exceptionally well, he will only be getting better, his age is right - is there anyone else to consider - I don't live in Kerry and wouldn't be close to things. You raise an interesting one re best teams winning, human psychology leads us all to believe that the best team won, if we pipped it then we would all say Kerry were better on the day, I have seen decisive wins but if a few things went another way the result may well have been different. Strange, is ait an mhac an tsaol. That Éamonn went that close when all our leaders had high mileage and that against the 'greatest' Dublin team ever is truly remarkable, what wouldn't he do with what's coming through? If he has a chink re Galvin/Geaney then address it as otherwise he looks like the real deal, what was Cody like at the same stage of progression? Maybe being an outsider ain't bad as I am immune to local wind, Spillane's quick proposing of Jacko to replace him was a bit much, is Killian not getting in there?, then no u21s on panel but AI Club champs came through? Whats the story? All in all I think Kerry get most calls right in our search for excellence down the years, but it is a journey, not a destination and the day you stop is the day that door opens and you depart, taking your baggage with you.

I thought this thread would be closed by now. Simple fact is Dublin are a better team. That's five wins on the trot now for Dublin counting the league win. Sad reading for Kerry fans. Hopefully now some will retire. I was hoping Fitzmaurice would step down as far as I know he is staying on. Stats don't lie. Kerry went almost 14 minutes without scoring a point to start the game. That means six Forwards and two midfielders could not kick a point. Inexcusable. A county player can't kick the ball over the bar. Kerry got two lucky goals one a gift. They went in leading by 5 points. They came out for the second half and went almost another 15 minutes without scoring. That's inexcusable. I can't understand how your are supposed to be the best in your county and you can't kick a point for that long. We got outscored by 22 points to 16 points. Fitzmaurice takes off our best forward Paul Geaney and replaces him with a 36 year old defender. Who played for 10 minutes and didn't touch the ball once. Another great move by our great manager. Not alone can we not beat them on the field but we can't beat them on the line either. Let's close this thread down now. It's time. The Kerry minor thread is open I encourage kerry supporters to go and give the lads a bit of support and respect. A fantastic young bunch of lads. They are actually in an All Ireland final. Not like this bunch.
