Abbeydorney is the best hurling field in Kerry!! So I am delighted its on there and I am sure both teams are as well as both like to play a quick skillful style of hurling. Parking might be a bit of a problem but with both sets of supporters capable of getting into Abbeydorney from a couple of different directions I am am sure there will be plenty of fields transformed into car parks for the day, and let's just hope it's a dry week or you might need a 4x4.. I would be thinking maybe the the road from the village down to the sports field might be closed off to traffic for safety reasons as it will be a busy road with people walking down to the field! I know they usually have parking in the field across from the pitch!! It will be interesting to see how it works out.. It will be a good experience for the Abbeydorney Club to see how it's all run off as it looks like Kerry will play there NHL games there as well next year. Hopefully they might get some temporary seating or something along them lines for the game for the far side. But it should be a great day!! And hopefully a great match.. Either way the pubs will be happy there!!

Abbeydorney GAA pitch has been confirmed for the Garvey's Senior Co. Hurling Championship game St. Brendan's v Kilmoyley Hurling club. There will be over 3000 at this. Where will they all get parking? Ardfert had a team bus to get from Ardfert to Lerrig for the last game....a two mile trip Em, that makes complete sense.

will O'Dorney be big enough to hold the crowd? County Hurling finals can attract anything from 2000 to 5000 people. Might not get as many from non hurling areas going to ODorney for the final. A lot used to tip into Tralee for the hurling final and not attend another hurling game till the following years final

Kilmoyley Captain Sean Maunsell hopes Lady Luck will shine on his team on Sunday By Sylvester Hennessy,
31 year old Sean Maunsell has the honour of captaining Kilmoyley in Sunday’s County Final. Maunsell has been part of the senior squad since he was 18 years of age when he picked up the first of 3 County Senior medals back in 2003. The talented forward feels however that he should have even won more senior medals by now. “I won 2 county championships in my first two years at senior level so I suppose I thought it was pretty easy at that stage. We lost the final in 2007 and I then went to Australia and unfortunately missed out on a medal in 2008 before returning to win my third medal in 2009. It has been frustrating since then because I feel that we have never been far away and maybe luck just hasn’t been on our side. I know you make your own luck but 6 years is a long time without a county title for a club like Kilmoyley. That is the motivation for us all on Sunday, to win another title for the club and in a good few cases, to win a first senior medal.”
Maunsell is immensely proud to be Kilmoyley’s Captain on Sunday. “It’s so natural to catch a hurley in your hand in this parish because once I went to school in Kilmoyley we were pucking a ball at lunchtime with Declan Lovett. Declan guided so many of us in his time in the school we couldn’t wait to close the books and run out to play hurling. I played with the likes of Tom Murnane, Seanie Murnane, Adrian Royle, James Godley and Shaun Young. We all grew up hurling together. I suppose when you were young you dreamt of playing for your county which I achieved and then to go on to Captain Kilmoyley to a county championship. That has always been a dream.”
Despite being one of the more experienced men in the panel Sean hopes to be hurling for some time to come. “I think there is a precedent here in the club. Lads keep going for as long as they can and are wanted. Ian Brick and James Mac are two of the fittest players in the club and they are both over 40 so hopefully I have a few finals left in me yet. I love hurling so I’ll try to play as long as I can.”
Maunsell is also happy with the choice of venue on Sunday. “Abbeydorney is a great pitch for hurling. They should be very proud of their field and the fact that they will stage the county final. Fair play to them and everyone in North Kerry, who have worked so hard to make this championship a success. I cannot wait to run out on the field it will be a unique atmosphere and one that hopefully we’ll remember for all the right reasons.”
Mausnell’s final thoughts were for the men of Ardfert. “I have great friends in Ardfert but when you cross the white line, you are playing for the pride of your club and that friendship has to go out the window for the hour so on the field of play. I think there is mutual respect there between both teams as well as the obvious rivalry. May the best team win on Sunday and we’ll all have a few pints after the game because that is the spirit in which any final should be played.”
John Meyler reveals his love affair with Kilmoyley By Sylvester Hennessy,
John Meyler has been associated with hurling in Kerry on and off for 15 years. The Cork based Wexford native has a particular affinity with Kilmoyley having led them to a 4-in-a-row of County titles back in the early part of the last decade. The former All Ireland senior club winning captain with St Finbarr’s in Cork spoke of love for Kerry hurling and Kilmoyley in particular in the build up to Sunday’s Final. “It began when I came down here in 2000. The Kilmoyley pitch is like an oasis in the middle of the desert. And really it’s a fantastic set up. Kilmoyley have a great tradition I was fortunate enough to also be involved with St Finbarr’s in Cork and I would say Kilmoyley are similar, a great hurling club. I love the old style hurling in Kerry, the intensity, the passion, to see local clubs playing side by side.”
The 59 year old feels his side are much better prepared for this year’s final. “I came in last year around July 4th after a hip operation so it’s difficult then to put your stamp on things in such a short space of time. This year I have had more time with the lads and they’re great young hurlers and they can all hurl. I have always said that there are fantastic hurlers in Kerry.” Meyler is very familiar with the intense rivalry that exits in Kerry hurling. “Every game in Kerry is a 50/50 game. There’s no such thing really as favourites and games in the Kerry senior championship generally hinge on small things. I suppose St Brendan’s won in 2013, and were unlucky last year.” The 2014 County Final defeat still upsets Meyler. “We conceded a silly goal early in the game and we panicked a bit really. Paul Galvin at centre forward caused us problems and that was something that needed to be looked at, at the time and it wasn’t. We’ve worked on things like that so they shouldn’t happen this year. There’s massive pressure there for the lads because everybody wants to do well everybody wants to be out in front so of course there is always pressure there to win especially at a club like Kilmoyley that are used to success.”
Key player Tom Murnane is unlikely to play in the final but Meyler is confident his side can still do well. “Tom Murnane had a serious injury in the semi-final against Ballyduff and we wouldn’t expect Tom to be near the team at all on Sunday and he is a huge loss.
I’ve great friends in Ardfert like John Egan who played a huge role in our win in the Christy Ring Cup win in 2011. I remember chasing Darren Dineen up and down roofs of houses to try to get him to play for Kerry. I got him back! They’re superb hurlers. It’ll be a battle of course the final will take over the lads lives for the coming weeks and you just have to be able to deal with and do your best on the day

Dual Trainer Pat O’Driscoll on St Brendans chances of winning Co Final By Murt Murphy
Ardfert are fortunate to have so many talented players who are high achievers in both hurling and football. However in order to be successful, and particularly in a dual club, there has to be good management, otherwise the level of consistency and success would not be possible. St Brendan’s and Ardfert are extremely fortunate to have a man of the caliber of Pat O’Driscoll in charge of both hurling and football.
Is it a difficult juggling act? “Firstly we have talented players. I could not have envisaged that we would be preparing for a county final three months ago because we were struggling in the hurling, struggling because we had some players gone away for the summer. We were not playing well, to be very honest. Then over the last month, we have hit a bit of form and the Causeway game was the turning point. We seemed to drive on from there and in the second half of the Lixnaw game, in particular the last twenty minutes, where we played very well. Causeway was a bit of a worry after our performances against Abbeydorney and Ballyheigue. It’s hard to put a finger on how we started so poorly but I suppose we had won the All-Ireland Club, which meant we were training hard over the winter, so the lads took a bit of a break in the spring, when everybody else were getting ready for county leagues. We were probably rested again and ready to rock. We have a dual session, an hour football and an hour hurling. It’s the only way it can work, as it prevents lads having to be out five nights a week. ”
St Brendan’s have a good blend of youth and experience – does that help “Look in Ardfert; we have a lot of fellows who come and go for a variety of reasons. The younger fellows, who come in like Fionan Mackessy and Eric Leen, are able to learn from the older lads and they are given good advice. The transition is seamless enough because they start training at 16 with us, and the older fellows push on the younger lads, it’s a natural progression, and luckily it’s worked well for us. We are more balanced than the last few years and Fionan and Eric have been a major bonus for us”
Turning to his final opponents Kilmoyley, O’Driscoll rates them very highly “John Meyler is a great coach and he would know all the Kilmoyley lads well. He has brought a great blend of experience and youth to the table. James Godley is back, Shaun Young is back, which is a great boost to the them. Then they have Tom Murnane, Daniel Collins is flying, Dougie Fitzelle is playing great hurling and Jordan Brick, Adrian Royle is serious threat upfront along with the experienced campaigners. Kilmoyley have a great work rate and credit to John Meyler and the coaching staff for that. Kilmoyley are the Kilkenny of Kerry hurling so we are under no illusions about the task we face but we will have a right go and see what happens”
St Brendan’s captain Darren Delaney reckons final will be a battle By Murt Murphy St Brendan’s captain Darren Delaney is his sides number one and being a goalkeeper in hurling is not a position lads are queuing up for, but from about the age of twelve, when he was asked to stand between the posts, he has been holding down that position ever sense. The 25 year old Gym Instructor, has won one SHC medal, 2 U-21 Championships, 2 minor Hurling Championships, 1 Christy Ring Cup with Kerry, has 2 All-Ireland B Minor and U-21 B Championships with Kerry, 1 All-Ireland Intermediate Club Football with Ardfert as well as a County and Munster Intermediate Club with Ardfert, so just like it says in Bible, Darren would love to make everything two by two!.
“I think it was U-12, one day when we were short a goalkeeper and I was asked to go into goal, and I am stuck there ever since. I suppose with hindsight, it was a good thing, as I enjoy the position now and being captain is an added bonus. There wasn’t much hurling in the family to be honest, my brother plays, and my Mom Geraldine, is the St Brendan’s secretary.” Considering St Brendan’s did make the best of starts in this SHC, losing their first game to Abbeydorney, is Darren surprised that he is now preparing for their second final in three years? ” I suppose at the start of the year, our target was to get to the county final. We were badly caught in the opening round against Abbeydorney, after making a good start leading 1-5 to 0-1 but they totally blitzed us in the second half, and deserved to beat us.
In the second round, we played Ballyheigue, and we managed to get through by the skin of our teeth, winning by a single point. Training the week before that game saw a few home truths being told by the management , so we got the show back on the road, if only just. Then we moved on to the quarterfinal against Causeway, and we really hit the ground running. It was a big performance, any day you score 4-16, you will win most games and to be honest I think no matter how well Causeway played that day; we would have won, because we were tuned in, totally focused and ready to go. Then onto the semi-final against Lixnaw and we knew that was going to be a tight one. We have played each other eight times since 2012, so we know each other inside out. We got the rub of the green, with a fluky goal, which John Egan got and that gave us momentum, and we shut up shop after that” .
Mixing hurling and football can be difficult when you are involved with a dual club (Ardfert in football) and particularly coming off a successful All-Ireland Club campaign “You have no choice but to adapt. We are used to it and what we find is when one is going well, the other is going well. Both are going well, we are still in Div. 3 and we are back in the county hurling final. The fact that Pat O’Driscoll manages both times helps, because he plans out our week for us, so he will always allow us take a break, if you are over training. Pat is a top man and one of the main reasons that we are in another county final”
Darren is very impressed with Kilmoyley “They put up a massive score against Ballyduff in the semi-final. So any team who posts a total on 2-24, is going to take some beating. It’s definitely a 50-50 game and we know Kilmoyley are going to be tough. It probably will go right down to the wire. I suppose they have a mixture of youth and experience like us. This will be their second final in a row, and they will not want to lose two, so they will be highly motivated. I would think that losing last year’s semi-final to Lixnaw is still in the back of our minds and driving us on, so the fear of losing takes over and that is a powerful motivational tool. I was delighted when Pat called me aside one night after training and told me I was going to be captain. A captain is only a figurehead and we have fourteen other leaders on the field, and that makes my job easier. I am only hoping now, that we can get across the line against Kilmoyley and it would complete a great year for us, but it will be one hell of a battle, so we must play to our true potential”

Apparently they have limited it to 3100 tickets. With the good weather forecast it is probably the only option they had. There is no curtain raiser now either. Throw in at 2.30. Two teams from the one Parish. Cant wait.

Looking forward to the game, hopefully we will have a cracker, its been one of the better championships in recent years
Kilmoyley I think will have to improve again tomorrow if they are to win,in the second half against Ballyduff they did get a lot of space to do damage,I dont think St Brendan's will give them that space tomorrow.
Adrian Royle will need to reproduce his semi final form,he is a dangerous man with the ball in hand and is hard to stop when running at a defence,Danny Collins will have a massive say in the game as well and is a top free taker so St Brendan's will be hoping to cut down on the fouls.
If Tom Murnane is out, they will need the likes of Sean Dowling and Dougie Fitzell to step up and try and fill the gap that Murnane leaves
St Brendan's have the best six backs in the county, all of them are capable of playing anywhere in the defence,I think they will be the big reason they will win tomorrow,if John Egan gets the support from the likes of Daithi Griffin and Kevin Skinner then with the strength of their backs St Brendan's should juts about get the win.

Daniel Collins was outstanding for Kilmoyley yesterday. They really do produce some great skilful hurlers. He has taking up the scoring mantle after Shane Brick left the club.
I'd say An Tochar Ban pub in Kilmoyley will be packed to the rafters all week!
Kilmoyley are now on 23 SHC titles, just 1 behind Ballyduff who currently lead with 24.
Ardfert just couldn't get firing on all cylinders yesterday but like Kilmoyley have a young squad and will be back again to challenge for the Neilus Flynn.

Congrats to Kilmoyley on a superb display to which Ardfert had no answer. Daniel Collins ran the show and was flawless from the placed ball but KIlmoyley were on top in most sectors.
Abbeydorney pulled all the stops and the pitch must be the finest in North Kerry at this stage

Kilmoyley are down to play the Clare intermediate champions in a Clare venue on the 25th of October. No doubt the whole of Kilmoyley will travel to give them good support.
It would be great to see a Kerry team win the Munster Intermediate club championship.
There is a lot of good opposition from Cork, clare, Waterford, Tipp and Limerick.
Very tough grade to win!

What did you make of the occasion and the final. I see Anthony Daly came down for it ...he is still very close to Kilmoyley. Kilmoyley are one of the main reasons that we have "intercounty" All Irelands. In 1891 they disbanded so that a Kerry club could have a good shot at the All Ireland. Their players played with Ballyduff (along with a few from Lixnaw and Ardfert). Ballyduff won the All Ireland. The following year two Cork clubs did likewise. The GAA then changed things to allow "county selections" compete for the All Ireland. The rest is history.

The number 11 for Causeway/Ballyduff Brandon Barrett was at 12 for the Kerry minor footballers in 2015. I think Jack Goulding was on the panel too but not sure. There was a time that a SK selection would be all from Kenmare and KIlgarvan. Great to see so many Killarney players on it now. Iarla Courtney at 6 for Ardfert is a first cousin of Billy the minor football keeper in 2015. Iarla is a great prospect at football too. Gearoid Savage is a brother of Jacks.
I think Jack McCarthy at 15 is related to Pat McCarthy, Kerrys star man in the 1975 final v Dublin.
Shane Conway of Lixnaw is a brother of Mike and son of Johnny who was in goals for Kerry hurlers for about 15 years.
