A win is important, not just because it's Cork and not just ti get into the Munster final, but also the added bonus of that this side will be playing in Croke Park come August. Yup - the 4 quarter-finals are on the 1st weekend of August - in terms of the players' development - that's almost 12 extra weeks of training under Jack and Co they wouldn't be getting if they lost last night plus there's a Munster final game in there as well. And that's at a minimum - if things go well and they get to a final it would be up to 19 weeks extra in total.

Have Kerry minors made it to the 1/4 finals every year since it was brought in in 02?

Surprised not to see the list of players on the extended panel? Anyone know who is on that or is it unchanged since Clare game?

but what do you expect....that media start interviewing coaches at u14 and u15 level to thank them for wednesday's games? Or maybe every parent of the minor team to get thanked for driving their sons to training and games?
If kerry lose the munster final the kerry coach and selectors will get the abuse....not the development coaches

Like all other Kerry supporter I was delighted than Kerry managed to win the game last night and for that reason I am reluctant to bring any negativity to the performance. But it would be an injustice to this group of gutsy and determined group of young men not to question the apparent lack of game-plan - by the forwards in particular. I understand that it is unrealistic to expect perfection at this age level but people around me in the stand were totally frustrated by the lack of penetration in the final third. I don't think Cork were overly defensive in the way we have come to expect, yet the short passing over and back across the 45 was not good. This squad may not have as gifted a set of forwards as last year but there is an all-Ireland in them if they can sort out their approach to the posts. Mandad, Your criticism is a reasonable one. There maybe a couple of reasons for this "lack of penetration". First of all, the lack of penetration was most apparent when playing against the wind. That breeze was very strong and very cold indeed. It was difficult to kick long against it. Cork seemed to fare better in that respect, in that they had three or four very, powerful, very pacy ball carriers e.g Donal O'Duinin, Gary Murphy, Shane Kingston. We had nobody of that ilk for ball carrying against the wind. Paradoxically, I thought Cork overdid the ball carrying when playing with the wind when a more direct approach may have been more profitable. This lack of penetration was most obvious in the last ten minutes or so of normal playing time. A lot of the Kerry players at that stage seemed to be gasping with scarcely the energy to stay upright not to mind making incisive runs. I am not sure why they appeared so drained at that stage in contrast to Cork who seemed to be full of vim. Because of that, I gave them little chance of surviving extra time. Incredibly, they came out and build up a three point lead in the first half of extra time. Considering the circumstances, this was an incredible feat and a testament to the character of the players and management. Another possible reason for some indecisive, aimless forward play maybe due to the injury of the unfortunate Bryan Sweeney on the forty in the first sixty seconds. Theoretically your forty yards man is one of your key players, from whom a lot of your positive attacking play is likely to emanate. Now, that early injury must have had a shuddering impact on the rest of the forward line, even though direct replacement, Ronan Buckley, did not do badly at all. It is not unreasonable to assume that Jack had a specific role for Bryan and his early retirement must have up scuttled plans to some degree. Another explanation for some impoverished attacking play is that our forward unit is not as strong as our defensive and midfield units, certainly not as potent as last year's potent crop. Still, I am very pleased with the result, unexpected to me. I also feel that we beat a very good Cork team, which contained a liberal sprinkling of very good footballers. I confidently expect this Kerry team to improve under Jack. Very likely there are better minor teams out there but, on the evidence of last Wednesday evening, this collection will not readily submit.

I agree with almost everything Veteran except for one minor blip.........if I was the cork manager I would have ran the ball with the wind aswell as opposed to being direct, you couldn't kick the ball into that Jason Foley he would clean up all round him.......including James O Donoghue ??

I believe there are a number of the League Minor finals on this weekend? Are Ballydonoghue and Dingle playing this weekend? That should be a cracking game of football with a lot of the players from Wednesday night on show.

Veteran – your analysis of the performance I would accept entirely, bearing in mind that Cork were well organized defensively. The problem I have is that the Kerry attack were guilty of the exact same indecisiveness against a very poor Clare side, especially in the second half. Most recent tactical innovations have been designed with ball retention in mind. Everything at some point has been declared the root of all evil but surely hand-passing a ball to a team mate two or three yards away cannot be regarded as anything but ridiculous.
It is difficult to explain why some combinations of players work better than others. Young Linnane is a decent forward and is well worth his place on this team but not at 14. I understand that Jack has to design a tactical approach to fit his resources but a full forward with a different skill-set is required. Too many times when players in possesion looked up for a pass to an inside forward there was nobody showing and that slowed down the entire movement. Full forward is a class of hybrid position and if you want something to happen in matches it must happen in training.

Michael O'Donnell from Austin Stacks would be worth his weight in Gold at 14. He was training with the squad last year as a fringe midfielder. He is currently recovering from a broken finger and had a leg injury before that but he would definitely be fit and ready for August if the Munster final came too soon. Given the absence of a target man he would be a brilliant weapon - huge man, brilliant fielder, top notch kicker off both feet and unreal game awareness given his prowess as a basketballer too. Stephen O Sullivan and Geaney would have a field day playing off him.

To be fair, I have heard he is a great footballer also. Suffered a nasty leg injurty at the end of last year, but the great thing about Wednesdays win is all these fellas will get a chance to break into the team also.

You say that you got great value for €10. Well, to read you match report for free is something else entirely. Do you take notes during a game or how do you manage it.
What height is Jason Foley from Ballydonoghue. Is he over 6 foot.
There is a great spread lads from around the county involved and I cant recall the "Kerry minor thread" ever being so uncontroversial. There seemed to be raised eyebrows about Billy Courtney being put in goal but its seems to have been an inspired decision by all accounts.

Could not agree more, Veteran very rarely has an inaccurate report and his in-depth analysis rivals that of any publisher. Billy Courtney was a strange one alright, I have watched the Crokes underage games through his development and I have never seen him in goal before the Cork game (I missed the Clare game). Clearly Jack or one of the selectors identified attributes that gave them the notion of putting him in goal, it has turned out to be a wise decision. Billy is also a very good outfield player and was the standout player of his age group.

You'd be mindful that reading the game is a key difference between Club and County players and that would be a very interesting debate where goalies are concerned, and you'd think that the situation would differ for minors and seniors. I suppose coordination of the backs is key and of course kick outs. What marks out good goalies from great ones? Was Clugston the best in recent times?
I know it is a bit off the point but soccer goalies need to spring back up instantly when they don't manage to hold onto the saved ball and which happens regularly. Their knees give them lots of trouble and wasn't it a soccer surgeon who sorted out Spillane's knee. Pat told a good one of the night in Knocknagoshel when the knee finally gave in, they were having a few pints after in the local pub, the name of which was, well, The Wounded Knee.

thanks hugh.... is Billy a minor again next year? Yes Mickmack he is, he would have been expected to give the minors a rattle outfield in his age group but with his new found position he may well stay there. Looking back on the decision to try him out in goals, he actually does possess the more important attributes necessary for a goalkeeper. I can't seem to shake Mark O Connor out of my head, his performance against Cork was the complete performance and for a player of his ability to have the attitude and work rate in company is a gift in a player. He really excites me and he has a really bright future.

Foley was Man of the Match by some way, Cork tried at least 3 men on him, he has some burst of pace and a great knack of getting the hand in. Mark O Connor was very impressive also but he's a bit tentative in front of goals, as were some of this team mates. Build up play was extremely slow at times. They showed great character in extra time though when they could have easily dropped the heads. Great game of football to be at. ballydonoghue minor league champions, beat Dingle by 5 points but the reality is, it should have been double figures, Dingle keeper pulled off 4 one on one saves in the second half including a penalty.
as to how Ballydonoghue only have 2 players on the minor panel is a mystery to everybody in North Kerry.

There was three of the Ballydonoghue starting fifteen last on the Kerry minor panel, albeit jack Goulding is a Ballyduff man. Michael Foley and Kieran lynch would be there or there abouts only they have had their season interrupted by injury. What other Ballydonoghue lads would you have on the Kerry minor panel?

I cant say that I have ever seen this Ballydonoghue team play but more often than not a strong team is more reflective of strength all over than the pitch and not having 6/7 stand outs and 8/9 poor players- so maybe the answer is that Ballyd just have a very strong outfit but only 2/3 really elite players and 12 or so very good players who are just a little off minor standard

That ''versatile' back to the best of my knowledge was with the minors for 1 or 2 trial games around the time of the Corn Ui Mhuiri. He's a long way off of this years minor team, he'll be doing well to make it next year and likewise for that goalkeeper, he couldn't even make the Kerry u16 team last year and you expect him to be in with the minors this year?
