Pretty much everyone overlooked Paudie from underage to juniors to seniors. How much you blame them and how much of the fault lies elsewhere is the question.

Yeah, I feared the worst when that challenge was made alright. Wasn't good. At least it was in the context of tussling for possession though, unlike some of the other incidents. Amazing that the brother was overlooked for the senior team for so long. The talent was evident from way back. Serious omission by PK really. It was Fitzmaurice that overlooked him really and Éamon admitted he erred. PK brought him into the Kerry panel in 2020 as a sub and playedvasva starter through 2021. 2019 was a serious ommission by PK. He carried UCC to a Sigerson title along with Sean O'Shea. That was the time he should have got called in. Paudie spent that summer in the states when there was lesser players on the field in the two 2019 finals v Dublin. He was awesome that winter also with EK when he returned. He didn't get much of a look in either in 2020, the Covid year. It appears PK didn't fancy Paudie based on his history. Two all stars since. Everyone makes mistakes but that's part of it.

Dublin recently had a good team albeit with a few individuals who have crossed the line on occasion no more than ourselves, but they weren't a dirty or cynical teams as such nor was that either Dublin or our culture. Tyrone are different somewhat in that they are well capable of playing football, also have individuals who can mix it but most importantly this unfortunately seem to be their culture. And anyone involved in a sporting organisation will know that, while you can change individuals it's very difficult to change the culture. Do you not think their senior intercounty team have improved greatly in terms of their behaviour? Or am I on my own there. It’s less than 4 years since the whole water bottle saga..

Did anyone see much of Paudie as a minor or an u21? Surely he was always a brilliant footballer. Strange how he was overlooked not just for teams but for panels.

Matt Rennie must be one of the very best men in the county to win a kickout when his team needs it. Has won ball consistently in the moments when Fossa needed it most in Fossa’s run to Croker.
Likewise Brian Friel has developed into such a strong defensive player which is amazing considering he was always a corner forward. Arguably the best tackler in the county. He seems to have the perfect blend of aggression and timing.
Finally I was impressed with Mark Ryan. Considering the options available to Kerry at midfield currently especially after Diarmuid O’Connor’s injury, I hope Jack brings Mark in and I would actually start him up in Donegal.

Three standout performances I had never seen these three play before but boy was I impressed The catches and delivery by Renee were huge But I’m hearing he’s been around for a while Not sure why I’ve not heard his name before Friel as I stated earlier here was a real eye catcher totally agree with you here Mark Ryan seems a fine prospect The Rathmore full back could be worth looking at too

Well congrats to Fossa and Rathmore anyway, a great day for Kerry football and both clubs did their county proud. Rathmore were very slick and assured and even though they gave up a couple of goal chances in truth they were in control of that game throughout. Shane Ryan gave a brilliant performance as did Mark in midfield. Huge credit to Kenneth O'Keeffe too for some excellent saves - he's from some family of goalies!! I was very impressed by Fossa too considering they were up against it for so long. In a junior match a 3/4 point lead can be near insurmountable but the two Cliffords rose to the challenge in that second half. Unfortunately my fears about Tyrone club culture were realised by Stewardstown's antics, at least they got what they deserved. I've no issue with the two Cliffords being sent of, they deserved to be and I just hope Jack has a stern word with them about getting involved in unnecessary agro. David is a marked man these days and every defender in the country will be out to niggle him to get a reaction, yesterday was proof that sometimes he might react. Felt Paudie should have not mentioned the ref in his speech. I understand where he was coming from but GAA officials are a small community and they will protect their own. Those comments could be in the back of another ref's mind in a big Kerry game later on. We've enough of a target on our backs being AI champs without adding to it. Must also be said that whatever about the junior side, Gallbally played their match in the right spirit and while I'll never understand a team that's losing sticking to the 14 men behind the ball rubbish, the match was clean and sporting. My friend from Fossa broke his dry January to have a few porters with me after the game, I doubt he was the only one. Probably a fair few sore heads around Fossa and Rathmore today and who would begrudge them! David Clifford's second yellow wasn't a reaction to anything. And first was stopping the goalie doing a kickout so he got neither card from reacting

Hindsight is wonderful with panel selection - a bad trial can be a show stopper, moreover if a fella looks weak in say reading the game, to me a key difference in the step-up from club to county, and I believe Éamonn was better than PK and that he wouldn't knowingly err.
And yes, give a few of 'em a run in Ballybofey - sure they are at peak fitness anyway so they shouldn't cost us.

Very lively for a Monday 🤣🤣🤣 Isn’t it just, bit surprised by the stance by some, but everyone is entitled to their opinions. I think the general consensus is both Kerry teams played the better ball and deserved their wins. The Rathmore game was a tame affair but after the Fossa game that was to be expected, there was a few niggles on both sides, to be fair I think the only real dirty stroke was the high elbow which was scandalous. The full back was silly in his challenge, it wasn’t a punch but more a push to the face, thought Shea made a bit of a meal of it to be fair but regardless, the full back was pure stupid in what he did, to strike, attempt or raise the hand and you’re gone - costly error for his village The sub that saw red for the high elbow must be fair embarrassed this morning, this action could have far reaching consequences if looking for a job interview for example. Paudie was most lucky with just a fat lip. I will say one thing, and we all have seen this unfold when a team goes a man down, the ref will take any opportunity to ‘balance the books’ I was shocked the Fossa man escaped with a yellow for the clothes line, that was dangerous and if the roles were reversed we’d be baying for blood. Regardless, one just has to be thankful that DC and his brother are a Kerry born or of the kingdom…… Serious serious talents. Two things showed the class of our ballers yesterday, the guard of honour for Rathmore and DC’s man of the match interview, no grudges, leave it on the field, shake hands and drive on… fine fine examples. Yip good post. While I'd wonder if the ref saw that clothesline like it looked on TV, I'd say there was a lot that went on that nobody saw - someone told me there was off-the-ball all over the place at times so officials had to decide which instance to look at.

Wasn't above Ballyatthefireside, so can only comment on what the TG4 cameras picked up, however, it would be a fair assertion to accept that if there is niggle and physicality on the ball, that there is an equal or greater amount off it

He got a few garbage minutes at the end of the Cork game. He happened to be badly fouled during the very last play leading up to the goal, no free out given. The weekend of the 2019 All Ireland Final he played a final of his own in NY and was outstanding, won MOTM. Everyone at Gaelic Park new that it was Croke Park he should have been at that weekend

Paudie doesn't have the same talent David has, but what he misses in talent he makes up for in passion and intelligence. He is an excellent reader of the game and like chess player thinks two, three moves ahead. He is definitely a late bloomer as well. Not all players have the same route of minor, u20, junior senior and son on. Some lads need a few years to develop their own style and perhaps work that bit harder on the basics of the game. I see Fionn is studying that and finding the same thing. There are lads all over Ireland that have all the talent and they could be brilliant players, but they decide they want to go study abroad or do something else. Then there are players who were always the smallest lads in school and not very good at sports. 10 years later and they are the fittest lads on the pitch. I think most agree that Paudie was overlooked for too long, but he has certainly made himself a starter since. I wonder if he would have been given the nod if he wasn't David's brother. It seems managers are reluctant to choose players on club form if they haven't played minor or U20 before.

Some say David sulked a bit in 2020 v Cork but the missed goal v Sterwadstown shows even he not infallible, jazus if it was anyone else we'd crucify them, yo0u can hear us - 'that useless hoor to take a point with the goalie as láthair' - I could scarcely believe my eyes, nobody wants to even hear of it left alone bring it up and understandably so given David's sublime showing, we should nick name him Magicliff.
Maybe David helped Paudie a bit like the O'Sés worked and 'tis hardly a sin, well unless you aren't from Kerry of c - the elder Clifford has certainly put his stamp on things and there sure is plenty more to come - we are blessed!
It was a one score margin with Fossa not rattling the onion bag and Stewartstown will be livid as they can only rue what might have been, 3 and 4 were class junior players, big wide men, I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of what they'd dish our even within the rules - still we also need to acknowledge them and I can assure you that 99% of them are salt of the earth admirers of Kerry, just a biteen of discipline and controlled aggression and they will climb and claim and good luck to them, life wasn't always easy for them.
BTW I got a security alert on a You Tube of the game, I have a higher level detector myself - it mentioned phishing which can access personal data - bank details maybe, I'd hate to see my fellow latchicos cleaned out in a cold winter when we need to be saving for Croker.

Paudie outstanding center forward in 2018 Kerry All Ireland winning Kerry Junior team, then center forward on Billy Morgan's winning 2019 UCC Sigerson Cup team, and center forward on Jerry O Sullivan's County Championship winning East Kerry team. Didn't get his first start for Kerry seniors until May 2021.

Word on the street is that Paudie might face a lengthy ban. A ban for the straight red card, a ban for accepting the cup and giving a speech even though he was red carded (though the Down proposal at congress should mean that ban should get overturned), but a very lengthy ban for what was said about the referee. Similar to others commenting on officials. Unfortunately it also looks like they are not following up on the assault.
In a different sport called rugby they are also trying to deal with head injuries, like the GAA says they intend to do, and some high profile players like Billy Vunipola and Bundee Aki received straight red cards and bans because of leading into a tackle with the elbow. This weekend as well, players got yellow cards for leading into a tackle with the elbow, whether they would make head contact or not, and bearing in mind this was still allowed last year. Each time the referee deemed it a straight red card, and here comes the crucial bit, because the elbow should be nowhere near the head in rugby.
What Anton Coyle did was despicable and should be dealt with by the Gardaí as assault. If the GAA do not report this to Gardaí a similar incident will happen again and someone will be killed. In the video it is very clear he actually aims the elbow at Paudie's eyes and temple, but hits him on the jaw. He could have easily broken his jaw, knocked out a few teeth, but had he hit him on the temple as was intended, he could have killed him. Is that really what we want? Do we want a player to be murdered? Cause that is what it would have been, and easily could have been, manslaughter.
I do hope that Paudie gets help with his defence against any bans, and if the defence is any good they will be able to argue easily that he was concussed and did not realise the implication of what he said.
Meanwhile, I've been told that an assault charge can also be made on behalf of the victim by a witness so I really hope to go the legal route.

And not the first time that thug has faced a lengthy ban. Players hit with 36-week bans after Ulster brawl THE Ulster Council has handed out stiff suspensions and imposed heavy fines on the clubs involved in a brawl at the end of an Ulster Club IFC game last month.
TUE, 19 DEC, 2006 - 00:00 COLM O’CONNOR AND FRANCIS MOONEY Social share Four players, two each from Ballymacnab of Armagh and Tyrone’s Stewartstown, were handed 36-week bans.
And both clubs were fined €2,500 as a result of the post-match melee which marred their Ulster semi-final.
The game ended in a draw, and will be replayed now that the clubs have escaped dismissal from the competition. Stewartstown’s Anton Coyle and Tony Donnelly were suspended for 36 weeks, as were Ballymacnab’s Philip McCone and Dwayne McParland.
A total of 12 players, seven of them from Ballymacnab, were suspended.
Barry Bleeks of Stewartstown received a 24-week ban, with others receiving suspensions ranging from eight weeks to 12 weeks.
Stewartstown fined €2500; Anton Coyle, 36 weeks; Tony Donnelly, 36 weeks Barry Bleeks, 24 weeks; Ryan Small, eight weeks; Rory O’Neill, four weeks. Ballymacnab fined €2,500; Philip McCone, 36 weeks; Dwayne McParland, 36 weeks; Stephen Kennedy, 12 weeks; Christopher Kennedy, eight weeks; Paul Kennedy, eight weeks; Damien McGeown, eight weeks; Gary McKee, eight weeks.
Meanwhile South Kerry GAA chiefs have been left red-faced after a technicality allowed a player who allegedly struck a referee last month, escape suspension, and play in the weekend’s divisional senior semi-final.
On November 26, Michael Curran was attacked after the minor football league final between Waterville and Skellig Rangers, won dramatically by Waterville with a last-minute goal.
One Rangers supporter is believed to have kicked the official in the stomach in what one witness described as “like something out of a Kung Fu movie”.
However the individual allegedly involved escaped censure at a meeting last week due to an error on the part of board bosses.
He then lined out against Dromid Pearses, the home club of match official, Curran, in Sunday’s South Kerry SFC semi-final. The game was won by Skellig Rangers, who now face Waterville in Saturday’s decider.
The player at the centre of controversy is free to play as the board don’t plan to revisit the matter until after Christmas.
The chairman of the South Kerry Board, Patrick Brennan, admitted that the situation was unsatisfactory but said that “these things happen”.
Explained Brennan: “We met during the week but we discovered that our GPC meeting was unconstitutional as there should have been seven members present but we only had six.
“We rang the county board and they confirmed that we needed to have had six. It was a technicality. These things happen.”
However he revealed that the matter will not be discussed until after the Christmas break.

If I was Paudie and facing a ban relating to the game I'd
1) Go to a doctor and get checked regarding a concussion in addition to the damage on the face. Use that to defend on all charges. In fairness, Paudie should take his punishment on the red card.
2) if charged regarding accepting the cup. Say that he was still feeling the affects of the assault and didn't even realise he was called the wrong name. The GAA President should have also known one of the current All Stars and that he was obliged to ensure the rules were followed.
3) send an apology to the referee and linesmen that he is mortified by what transpired. Mention the concussion but that it didn't excuse his behaviour. Mention also that he wishes to apologise in person with the ref.

This sparks similar to a certain Finuge man's plight in 2008.
What would Cork do? If Paudie is sanctioned, Kerry fight it legally, failing a successful outcome threaten to pull the plug for a year , the hierarchy would not want the 'holders' refusing to fullfill fixtures... play the bluff game, at some stage the CB will have to take a moral stance and back their members..

Just for clarification, Paudie Clifford was brought into Peter Keane's panel in 2019 but was carrying an injury (ankle if I remember correctly). Peter namechecked him several times in press briefings. The rule banning a red carded player from receiving a trophy was rescinded in 2018.

After having a quick enough scan throught the rule book, I don't think Paudie will be charged with anything in relation to the speech. He clearly didn't use any threathening, abusive, racist, sectarian or any other type of abusive language towards the referee which rules out a whole chunk of the rules. The only possible thing that they might charge him with is This doesn't go into much detail in terms of what exactly discrediting the organisation is but to suggest what Paudie said was as strong as discrediting the organisation seems like a massive overreaction and wholly out of balance. Honestly I will be very surprised if he is charged with discrediting the association. I'm not a lawyer but I'd say any capable legal person would absolutely destroy any possible arguments that he discredited the association by simply stating his opinion that he was wrongly sent off especially given the context 1) saying it was a tough game to referee 2) mentioning the fact that he thought the referee did a good job apart from his sending off 3) his use of "unbelievable" which is a whole different situation to saying something like "a disgrace" or "corrupt" or anything clearly derogatory 4) then he finishes up by saying "a Great job all around" I'm struggling to see any way Paudie could have phrased what he said while being more respectul to the referee that he disagreed with the referee's call to send him off. Basically the GAA would be setting a precedent that any criticism whatsoever of the referee no matter how mild and how respectful was discrediting the association which would look to be a massive overreaction. That's even before you take into account the wider circumstances - regarding the specific assault to Paudie with the elbow, the general overall behaviour of Stewartstown at the end of the match, the fact that the GAA looks like it is failing to protect players on the pitch/doesn't punish players who engage in foul play. Given how mild Paudie's comment were it would look like a massive overreaction to charge him in relation to the speech.

If any ref treats Paidi differently in the summer based on a few harmless words then I'd question their integrity.
Personally I've no issue with what he said We live in a world now where every interview or speech is generally sterile and boring.
He didn't call him any names or slander anyone.
If Paidi gets a ban for that speech and Anton Kelly gets a 1 game ban for a straight red then that will show how dysfunctional the GAA disciplinary system is.

I've always liked the fact that in Kerry we generally have a culture of taking our punishment and unlike many other counties have accepted what suspensions are handed down to players over red cards, blacks cards etc.
But there are times I wish the Kerry County Board would be more willing to stand up for its players and if Paudie is being threatened with a lengthy ban I hope they do so with as much rigour as possible.
To ban him for what was ultimately a harmless speech would be a mockery, especially if the opponent who assaulted him is left go with a red card only.
What Randy Savage posted above is exactly the route I'd go re: arguing the effects of a probable concussion as a defence.
I'm so sick and tired of players from the rest of the country having legitimate cards/bans over-turned on some ridiculous technicality while down here we are expected to abide by the spirit of the game.
The broader point is why the GAA seems to reluctant to undergo and much needed route and branch restructuring of its appeals procedure to ensure consistency and these loopholes of technicalities are eradicated.

The ban on accepting the cup was done away with so he won't be in any trouble for that.
