A sad reflection of the economic circumstances that have contributed so much to the poor standard of club football in North Kerry. Sure what work is there for any young people to keep them at home in a region which doesn't even have the tourism of the rest of the county. The days of surviving as a small farmer are long gone too, just ask my father who gave up the ghost in the early 90s.
We have loads of wind turbines up here and applications for solar panel farms. The county development plan , I am told , envisages tourist trails being developed so that people can visit these pylons, We can collect a few blackberries in the autumn, sprigs of holly in December, visit the bog in early spring and ache for the time we could cut turf. In no time the cuckoo will arrive to serenade us . I can’t understand what people are complaining about. Sure if all fruit fails we can start eating grass because we won’t be allowed to keep cows owing to the amount of gas they produce from eating all that grass. But wait , will we start producing excess gas also if we consume grass. I suppose they will have to disappear us along with the cows at that rate. No need for employment so. Problem solved. word has it that when Shannon and feall rangers amalgamate to become North kerry there will be a wind turbine on the crest 🤔 only joking, I was up in a place called Glanageenty on the border of ballymac and Lyrecrompane for a walk about a month ago and it was a lovely spot in fairness, so north kerry isn't that bad of a tourist spot as there seemed to be alot of people using it.

Its gas. I was only reading about Glanageenty last night in a book i picked up in Dublin called Hidden Kerry by Breda Joy. The last Earl of Desmond, Gerald Fitzgerald was beheaded in Glangeenty on 11.11.1583. Captain Robert Monteith who landed with Casement was given refuse by the Lenihan family of Glangeenty. John Lenihan from Glangeenty won the world mountain running title on the Matterhorn in 1991.

NK has it rough economically, I suppose Kerry plc leads the way in moving from family farms to commercial farming and so accelerating rural depopulation, NK is officially downgraded to being 'of no tourism potential' - fact. i.e. Effectively rezoned an Industrial Zone, i.e. Dirty industry, to ease planning permission for turbines. The tin hat is now the proposed Ballylongford jetty being upgraded to also include an off-shore facility, considered Strategic Infrastructure with talk of power shortages, so that's that sorted! An entire class of 14 from a Ballylongford school now in Toronto and Ireland a rich country! Family farmers also getting it tight - monopolies in beef and indeed milk, beef factories pay the same price as 20 years ago so even medium sized farms are a thing of the past as nobody will want to start into a career that is already dying, an that is a stake though the heart of the GAA talent pool. And then they tell us processed food is bad for our health yet we import *e and the law allows it to have the tricolour pasted on it while our family farms produce the highest quality beef and milk in export markets - fact, premium brands ala Kerrygold, etc. Farmers get the same whether it is produce of feedlot or green pasture. Re other comments Ballybunion is the most beautiful beach in the world and would have so much more potential but the national cost base has priced it out of 'singles' market and who can holiday in the Med for a fraction of the price. I'd say much of Ballyb is caravan park based and two main hotels now gonners - Castle and Golf. Ballybunion Golf Club is of course world class but that requires world class accommodation and so they stay in Killarney, so all that stays local is caddy and green fees. Writers Week isn't what it used to be and is but a weekend anyway. That is the consistent message anyway so others may sharpen it a bit. Of course these issues apply to the whole country but NK appears to suffer all of them without any major positives and this will ultimately kill rural GAA long term, i.e. even those born won't go back there when they enter the jobs market. Of course Ballys bunion and heigue will prevail but nowhere near their true potential - I mean who wouldn't want to live by the sea.

Excuse me Kingdomboy but Crotta has the wind turbines on its crest! The first 6 of them were put up in Stacks Mt in 1999 and are still going strong. I'd often try and go for a run from my gaff to them and down again - a tough slog if ever there was one. Yeah Glanageenty is a nice quite place for a walk in the woods and as the other poster said Gerald the Earl was hunted down and killed there by forces royal to the Crown after the failure of the Desmond rebellion. But look there's nothing in North Kerry to attract the tourists outside of something like Writers Week in Listowel. We can't compete with your hometown out west. It was brought home to me in 2011, Crotta were in the county final for the first time in 12 years (and the last time) and it was their best chance of winning it since 1968 being 6 points up and only 10 mins left. Alas they couldn't close it out. The match program that day listed 22 of the Crotta squad as either students or unemployed. 6 months later most of them were gone to Australia and we dropped down to intermediate status for the first time in Crotta's history. I'm amazed sometimes how clubs like Crotta are even able to field a team and at least Kilflynn is on the main road and you've a good few from Tralee settled out there. What about even more rural parts like Asdee or Moyvanne etc. I really hope something can come of Fitzmaurice's task force. As Horse was telling us NK is now a single combined division underage. That's a crazy situation but if things keep going as they are the two Rangers will probably have to come together too soon. And even then they'll still probably be the weakest team in the county championship

I actually saw a sign with monteith written on it while I was there but I didn't read it as I was trying to keep up with the dog, and I can see how John Lenihan won that world mountain running title if he was training in glanageenty, you should give it walk some time it only takes 2 hours to complete the big loop.

I was only having the craic but that's mad, you'd think with ye being so close to tralee ye keep more of yer young lads at home, but then again tralee hasn't much work factory wise nowadays. Ya it's sad the way things have gone in North Kerry, is Ballybunion doing well? You'd think it would draw a lot of tourists as its a lovely spot with a great golf course, we used to get a bus to Ballybunion an odd time when we were young and head to the Atlantic night club, we saw the stunning there 1 night they were excellent.

Fitzie will know exactly what's ahead of him about half four on Saturday evening after the U17's play Laune Rangers in a must win game.
The key to underage development begins in the schools - unfortunately I believe Tarbert Comp have cancelled all football and will not be entering teams in schools football for the foreseeable.
Disappointing isn't the word for it but the GDA should be really putting the pressure on here or even taking the matter in hand and appointing an external coach to oversee the schools participation.
For me the schools structures is the foundation for development and the ideal stepping stone to development squads...

The combined NK Minor/U17's are in the quarter final on Saturday next vs St Brendans in Brosna. They have played nice ball to date, kicking big tallys.
The combined U15 make their debut Sunday in Cordal vs Castleisland District. Ironically enough they played a challenge only two weeks ago at the same venue. One would envisage a higher tempo affair this time.
Both sides are gelling well, so at least there is a foundation or green shoots for Fitz to work with.
However the cancellation of compeditive action for Tarbert Comp should be addressed at BK Board level. If the school does not have the resources, then maybe a more proactive approach or intervention by the GDA is required.
Or the NK Board appoint a Post Primary schools specific gaa officer to build at ground level up?

Nice to see Crotta being mentioned on here......I played with them many moons ago.
The North Kerry football downturn is primarily down to the lack of schools coaching and lack of success in the colleges competitions.

Nice to see I'm not the only one on here to have turned out for Crotta - I won't insult the game of hurling to pretend what I did on the pitch constituted anything like playing
Like yourself I'd be up in exile around the same part of the world these days

K'boy, any talk there of Mark O'Conner lining out against Mid Kerry over the weekend? don't know for certain horse, he's home but he was injured for Geelong in their AFL semifinal so I don't know if he's recovered enough.

I know Kilmoyley are making hay this last 20 years but they have said themselves they have very very small numbers now at underage. You’d imagine with smaller families now and less sons hanging around to do farming as a career choice this would have a knock on effect. But then again you see Ballyduff, Ballyheigue and Ardfert with huge numbers at the recent blitzes so maybe all is now at bad as we think. The football in North Kerry has definitely taken a big hit.

Kilmoyley would never have been the strongest at underage in general. They haven't won a minor championship since 2009 or U21 since 2006. They'll always get a few from each underage team to keep them going. Ballyheigue then tend to do well at underage bit can't seem to keep on to players. With the change in the way people live etc i could see Abbeydorney benefiting. People working in Tralee etc could see Abbeydorney as a perfect area to live. They've already got a few people like this as is. I think i seen recently that 100% of a Leaving Cert class in Causeway went on to some sort of further education. Where before they would have gone into a trade or farming.

That is true about Kilmoyley, their players seem to really develop between the age of 16-20 and the link between the primary school is huge there too. The community in general in Kilmoyley just live for hurling so that in itself probably keeps players around to play Senior with the tradition of winning etc. Ardfert, abbeydorney and Kilmoyley are only really 10-15 minutes from Tralee so they all might pick up commuters. I hope Causeway Comp stay strong as a hurling schools nursery, it really benefits the county hurling team. A lot of kids get exposed to hurlers from Cork, Limerick, Tipp etc at a fairly decent level. The days of parents letting their kids go off and do a trade is coming to an end. Unless they have zero interest in academics, most parents want their kids to go and do third level education to some degree.

It is true to say that there would be a fair number of pupils from the Limerick area attending but these would predominantly be from the Glin hinterland which would be mostly football country. I imagine the numbers would stack up to have a football team of some description but presumably it depends on the interest of the teachers . It is a shame that they are not fielding a team and I imagine, hope , that EM will have a particular look at the participation of schools in his overall appraisal of football in North Kerry.

Am I reading this right that Tarbert Comprehensive isn't participating in Gaelic games? Did they close down of their own accord for Covid reasons at one stage? I believe they they are tops academically with many from Listowel catchment area travelling 15 miles to school there.

Yes, a decision was made at one stage last year to close, to protect teachers/pupils but the powers that be overruled, it was just after Listowel races.
The decision to not enter PP School Competitions is not covid related to the best of my knowledge but I am open to correction. I think it was as more taken due to lack of resources.
If that is the case I don't know is it possible for a third party like a GDA or a NK Board appointed officer be assigned with agreement of school board.
Tommy Griffin is heavily involved with the secondary school back West. So there is a precedent in that regard

What level were Tarbert actually playing at does anyone know? Off the top of my head o can't think of anyone who would have been on the Kerry minors etc in recent years.
Are Listowel in the ''B'' championship in Munster? I remember at one point they were playing in the ''C'' championship. Would Ballybunion be any higher than the ''C'' championship? Same with Castleisland. Those would be the three biggest towns in North Kerry and if they're struggling to make an impact it's hard to build on that.

According to the Munster fixture planner Tarbert are entering a Senior football team.

Makes you wonder what Listowel and Castleisland are at, if they are at the same level or worse. Would many from North Kerry go to Abbeyfeale? Duagh, Knocknagoshel or Brosna wouldn't be too far away.
