Kennely I think went away from the round ball at age 17, and came back to try and win an All Ireland at around 28 or 29. He succeeded in Aus too. Athletic and mentally strong. We all saw how long it tok Tommy Walsh to re ajust when he returned. Tadgh did it in 1 season, forcing his way into a very sucessful team. (Not sure if he took Donnach's place) Yes his kicking was wayward in the beginning. But I think people's opinion of his ability and merits versus other players suffers because of his book, and the Co. board creating a job role for him and then him leaving once he got his medal, and obviously his involvement with AFL recruiting young Irish/Kerry talent. And if it was a popularity contest, then yes you'd put Donnacha in in front of him for his years of valued service. But its not. Kennely had just as much running in him as Donnach and more. He was a good passer, I seem to remember him picking out the Gooch with pin point accuracy from distance, putting him in for an easy score, in the 09 semi,he could obviously score his own poonts too. He was always impressive for Ireland V's Australia.Anyway I just think he was a bigger presence and stronger option than Donnacha, thats only my opinion, but when others say he shouldn't be anywher near consideration then it's obviously based on not really liking the guy. I didn't pick Donncha in my team as a result of a popularity contest. In fact, Donncha is one of the lowest key media profile Kerry forwards on that era!!! I picked Donncha because of an outstanding contribution over several years to the Kerry jersey I have massive respect for Tadhg and his achievements across the 2 sports but I cant see a rationale to pick on a team of era selection based on one season where he made a good ( at a stretch very good) contribution. I am delighted he got his all Ireland medal and delighted he got opportunity to represent Kerry but hey lets keep perspective In my opinion it is a joke to be talking about Tadhg in the context of a team of the decade.

I'm often accused of over estimating Tommy's talent pre-Oz, but for those of us who really rated his potential, if Tadhgeen's role in taking him down under was factored into said Tadhgeen's contribution to Kerry GAA then said Tadhgeen would rate very poorly, and poorer still if you factor in that he eased open the flood gates that deluged Mark O'Connor, etc - I reckon Oz has cost us 4 Sams, maybe more - all else being equal there would be no 5 in a row either if Mark was available. Just look at all the tight games where Mark would be worth 3-5 points every day. It is only in writing this that it is hitting home, and as we all know, one can be their own greatest critic when making such a stark point, but I cannot honestly see a counter-argument to this. While Kennely isn't a popular man in Kerry, and rightly so for a lot of reasons imo, i too don't think he really had anything to do with Tommy Walsh going to Oz. He afterall was still a player and with a different team. He may have had something to do with Walsh joining the Sydney Swans later on but that's totaly difference. Ah no, it was a biteen different but sure nobody ever has the full story but the'd have to have been were close, you can be sure he didn't discourage him. As regards popularity, who is, who wants to be, the fool is the most popular of all, albeit fair-weathers, I think people have relationships as opposed to friendships, frenemies I call it - whats that old saying, man will never be a hero among his own and only those closest can stab you. Tadhgeen's popularity rating is more to do with what observers think and what he does is his own business, what he did wasn't illegal though as to whether or not he broke the law or not depends on who you talk to and what 'law of what land' we are talking about, all he did was what enter uncharted territory as a very brave teen, sure didn't himself and The Horse get lost in Heathrow airport on the first leg of the pilgrimage and where they then said their goodbyes according to 'the book', he did pay a big price and that is seldom aired, wasn't easy and he said as much, put yourself in his shoes, I know, you have to go into denial, throw yourself at it and pretend all is fine, depend on progress will outshining the negatives and hopefully it will, and it probably did in his case. Still the hoor cost Kerry dearly but then again he didn't invent the gap between amateur Gaelic football and Professional Ozzie football -he just dealt with a reality and nobody should begrudge him that, but of course the hurlers of the ditch will! The sticking point for me is what is done behind the scenes and he is tutored in media management, this is a serious business after all and our own 'amateur' boyos would have little to learn when it comes to getting their wicked way, trust me, I know, don't we all!

No one can seriously think that Kennelly should be on any team of the decade.
I know people are bored at the moment so these ‘debates’ pass away the time.

On the subject of Tommy Walsh he really one of the big ''what if'' moments for Kerry during this time. Had he stayed who knows waht could have happened. On the same note the same could actually be said about Kennelly had he stayed. History could have been very very different

I thing T. K. did something amazing, Winning championships on Two continents. He would be remembered in a better light here only for the book. None of the guys that go away do it to hurt Kerry. It's a massive opportunity and an even bigger badge of honor for a young fella to be chosen for this. They're always welcome back to Ireland.

You are stretching things there. The actions of the likes of Galvin, Mahoney over the years didn’t help either.

Whatever about Galvin, you may have a point there, but with O'Mahony I asume you are refering to his dive against cork in 08. A lot was made of it and said about it at the time but I don't ever remember anybody giving out about O'Conor's behaviour. So everyone was disgusted with O'Mahony for diving and getting O'Conor sent off. I don't agree with diving either, it is cheating and dishonest but what do you think O'Conor's intention was when giving a guy like O'Mahony a small slap in the face while O'Mahony's blood was up. O'Mahony would have been known as bit of a hard man who wouldn't take a step back. So clearly while all eyes were on O'Mahony, O'Conor was trying to provoke a reaction out of O'Mahony in an atempt to get him booked or sent off. O'Mahony didn't react in the way he was expected to and instead played the Cork man at his own game(simulation) and O'Conor got the line. Now I don't condone O'Mahony's actions but I could never understand why nobody ever called out O'Conor for what he was clearly trying to do, which simply put,was trying to get O'Mahony sent off. I hate all the sledging and provocation that goes on with some players trying to get others sent off. Horrible part of the game and most people would probably agree. Yet these same people always slam O'Mahony but never say anything about what O'Conors intentions were in the clash.

The book, the tv appearances, the lack of any remorse...quite the opposite in fact. If i was appalled, how did non Kerry people feel.

The one thing about O'Mahony is that (unlike Kennelly for example) he stayed around for long enough to do redemption. If you'd said to me that day in 2008 that he'd be around 6 years later, playing a key role in winning an All -Ireland, marking the marquee forward of the 'cutting edge' football team du jour, I'd have politely suggested some therapy.

But I suppose to some degree it was easier for O'Mahony to stay around and keep playing, it's not like he had the option to head to sunny Bondi beach in Sydney and get paid to play professionally in a game where he was fairly highly rated. But sure good on him for staying anyway.

A few others who are often overlooked from this era are the likes of John Crowley, he was unstoppable at times for a few sesons. Dara Ó'Cinneide is another.
Off tipic a little but another from this time i'vs sometimes wondered about is Paddy Kelly. Where did he ever end up?

I was expecting to really push on and think he could have been a real leader that year. There was talk of a shoe-in as a TD but the incumbent wouldn't play ball, and then didn't the incumbent get toppled and hadn't the shoe-in gone down-under, so now there was no shoe to play ball, boyos kicked their own AR5E5, they all went down together, wan on his sword and the other to home to Oz! Seriously, Tadhgeen was to be a Minister for Art & Sport and that was a great idea until it wasn't, still The Kingdom found a sub Minister of wan and the same ilk, wan of our own, the only thing is he is from the beautiful part of the county, not the brainy part, i.e. upstairs for thinking, downstairs for dancing - but hells bells, takes two to tango and as we had no stairs we could have no Upstairs Downstairs! Personally I think Tadhg would also have made a fine minister for Art, for Fine Art, The Fine Art of International Haymaking, ag meitheal with Galvin for the heavy lifting, International Harvesters. The pair of 'em would get on well with the Kilgarvan pair in The Dail, two pair, a poker of knaves, The Fighting 4, poking, stirring the embers, of rekindle, maybe we'd give 'em a job at Ballythefireside, but we'd have no turf after the incumbent closing down the bogs?

Of course Tadhg can't be on the best 15 purely because he only played one year.
However, if right was right he Would be and for me, he would have been the top player of the last 20 years had he stayed.
He is one of the best underage players this county has ever produced and as pointed out, he came home and readjusted without much of an issue. Three years a minor and started every game and as a 16 year old played on that 1997 team which was involved in on of the best series of all irelamd minor semis ever played (lost 23-21 to Tyrone in the replay).
A rare talent that wasn't appreciated. We may have won 2002 and 2008 finals had he not moved.

Looking at the Terrace Talk website the other day made me remember some minor and U21 players from this time, and how different things can turn out.
Conall O'Cruadhlaoich from the Gaeltacht. I really thought he would be th enext big thing. Think he played with Limerick for a while.
Declan O'Sullivan from Lispole. Had a very bad leg brake from what i remeber when he was just hitting his prime. Still playing i think.
Padraig Sheehan from Dromid Pearses. Played minor, U21 and Junior but seemed to disapear young enough. Aidan O'Sullivan was Dromid was another who looked very good at underage.
Paddy Curran of course could have been one of the greats baced on underage at least.
