Some beating for Sneem/Derrynane. Must be very disheartening for them, I cant understand how such a massive area has such a small pick of players. Not that long since Sneem were a division 1 team on their own, kind of sad to see a rural club fall apart like this

Not that long since Sneem were a division 1 team on their own, kind of sad to see a rural club fall apart like this On that note Dungloe in Donegal just this year fielded their first ever adult hurling club team, a rare reversal of rural decline. Much of it I believe is fellas from traditional hurling marrying into the area, maybe also a few Gardai? That rural Donegal would suffer no less and maybe a bit more that other regions in terms of rural depopulation, makes it all the more admirable. I suppose the sheer skill of hurling is also a factor and I think it is fair to say the game is making progress up here in the hills. Yerra maybe a Kerry/Donegal AI final is a bit away but that won't stop anyone from trying and there has been a few competitive encounters here since things opened up.

Rural depopulation is killing small rural clubs

Results Group 1 Moyvane 0-16 Duagh 2-14 Asdee 1-18 Renard 2-13 Group 2 Beale 1-10 Cordal 1-10 Scaraglin 1-16 Valentia 2-8 All this means: Group 1 Duagh and Renard are both qualified on 4 pts. Moyvane meet Asdee to decide 3rd and 4th place. Group 2 Scart play Beale and the winner qualifies. Cordal will qualify if they beat Valentia. Group 3 Annascaul are all but qualified. Knocknagoshel will join them if they beat Sneem/Derrynane Group 4 Tarbert are qualified. Lispole have to beat Cromane to have any chance. A draw will do Castlegregory against Tarbert « Prev1Next » Group 3 Knocknagoshel 2-9 Annascaul 3-15 Sneem/Derrynane 1-7 Kilgarvan 2-9 Group 4 Tarbert 0-25 Lispole 0-10 Castlegregory 2-16 Cromane 0-13

Shows how quickly it can fall away

As mentioned st Michael's/foilmore also had a spectacular fall from the top too One would be thinking that the touristy part of the county would fare better given it's legendary industry - in contrast NK has been officially deemed to be 'of no tourist value' (or words to that effect) by KCC. Is it that only the hotspots like Killarney and Dingle were thriving? Now some of my fellow NK folk mightn't like me saying this but I always thought south of Tralee WAS stronger anyway, not least because there WAS more soccer and rugby in NK. Note I say WAS, it may have changed. NK is also about 1/8 of the county in terms of population with Tralee excluded - then take away the hurling stronghold and you might be down to 1/8 by area? Ah just guesstimates here but people get my drift. Someone might put a bit of flesh on the bone here re the contrast in how the 'touristy' parts are showing.

I don't think there are any rugby clubs north of Tralee.
Also a quick look at the KDL tables... not many clubs from north of Tralee there either.
To my eye the rural population is most stark in South Kerry.
But West Kerry is not immune. My understanding is that Dingle are struggling to field underage teams on their own at the moment and have joined up with other clubs to field underage teams.

Listowel RFC Listowel RFC, founded in 1899, has developed into a flourishing sports club which offers opportunities to play competitive and non-competitive rugby for both male and female participants from the age of 6 years up.

Did I see that Dingle, Annascaul and Lispole are together at minor and they only play in Div 5. Is that a blip or the start of a trend?

I can't really say to be honest. I would say the medium term prospects for West Kerry in terms of population might be good but right now there are certainly not many bodies in Dingle if they are not able to field on their own.

Probably the wrong thread but the big problem at minor for me is the way East Kerry have been allowed to gather so many clubs - this presents a massive challenge to all others. Only 4 club sides in this years county minor championship and the only ones to make it to round 2 were the two that got a bye. I think we will rue the lack of attention to minor and U21 grades in time - they are essential in keeping senior clubs supplied with the next generation of players.

Giving as many minors as possible game time with the club should be the rationale for the minor championship

A draw between Beale and Scartaglen this evening, this leaves both on four points along with Cordal.
Does scoring difference determine which two teams progress?
Annascaul and knocknagoshel also through to the quarter finals.

Annascaul and knocknagoshel also through to the quarter finals. Three teams tied on 4 pts should use points difference to determine the top two. However Cordal didnt play all their games so points difference cant be used. I believe this happened last year where I think Cromane and Ballyduff had to playoff because a team gave one of them a walk over. As far as I know, Beale would go through anyway as their points difference is better than Scart. So will it just be a playoff between Cordal and Scart?
