Makes sense in the long run anyway. It's the first new club in the county in 40 years

Great to see the Intermediate championship semis have 4 Intermediate clubs.
This has to be good for the development of hurling in Kerry.

I see that Matthew Flaherty and Barry O'Sullivan from Dingle are playing hurling with Kilmoyley of late. Great to see for Kerry hurling that there is still an interest back west. I remember Paul Geaney played u21's a few years back if I am not mistaken? Dingle don't seem to enter teams anymore in underage hurling competitions from what I can see online? Do they now play with Tralee Parnells?

Tralee Parnells won 2 matches in the intermediate championship before losing the semi final to Kilgarvan. A great start for Parnells When is the final on between Kilgarvan & Kenmare on? It would a good idea to play it as a curtain raiser to the senior final to give a bit of profile to hurling in the Roughty Valley

An interesting championship so far. I like the format but it needs an extra 2 weeks in the calendar to give clubs a chance and players a chance with niggles.
If bookies to be believed the coast is clear for a Lixnaw v Causeway final but Kilmoyley & St Brendans will have other ideas. Kilmoyley may have injuries but they have huge tradition especially since 2011 and the Dingle lads Barry O'Sullivan and Matthew Flaherty hacve strengthened their squad. Still Mark Foley former Limerick hurler has continued his good work from last year as coach with Lixnaw and they look stronger than Kilmoyley at this stage. Pressure match for Causeway v St Brendans as St Brendans will relish the underdogs togs and the favs tag hasn't always rested easy with Causeway.

You are right on the first point. Three of the four teams in action this weekend have each played the previous two weekend also. There is a possibility that the two finalists will be playing four weeks on the trot! This is extremely unfair IMO. For example Causeway have been dealing with a few injuries as of late but with the games coming thick and fast, there is no time for these players to get 100% right with the each passing game more important than the last. It is very unfair.
With regards the two games this weekend I feel Lixnaw will have too much for Kilmoyley. Even with the two Dingle lads in tow, I don’t think they have the hurling to beat Lixnaw at this stage and they most definitely do not have anyone who will be able to negate the influence of Shane Conway. The man has been tearing it up all year long with club, college and county and he is on fire at the minute. There are others who are chipping in with scores too and are very solid at the back. Lixnaw by 5+.
The other game is harder to call. As always Causeway will come into this game full of confidence but the big question is, can they finally put together a strong performance when it matters most? As we all know they have the talent to mix it with the best of them but always come up short for one reason or another. For that reason I give St Brendan a chance – A slight one at that. They are welcoming back some players who have been in the States all Summer so this should give them a lift but at this stage it is hard to see past a Causeway win. If there is anytime to tear up the script, it is St. Brendans! Causeway by 3.

Would starting it two weeks earlier help or did they start it as soon as the Joe McDonagh series ended.... i cant recall

Would starting it two weeks earlier help or did they start it as soon as the Joe McDonagh series ended.... i cant recall Last Joe McDonagh game was 15 June v Offaly. County Hurling Championship Round 1 was 6 and 7 July, with a replay on 19 July. Rd 2 was 27/28 July, with a replay on 5 Aug. The 2 quarter final games were last Saturday, 10 Aug and the two semifinals set for 17 Aug. Final set for 25 August, per Eolaire 2019. Looks a decent enough spacing of games - 2 games in July to eliminate 2 teams out of 8 and have two semi-finalists in place, although each round did have a replay. Two quarter-finals in August and semi-finals mid-August and competition all done by end of August, unless replays required. Football championship starts 15 September so hurling should be well over by then. All in all, decent enough scheduling by the Board.

Causeway 1-16. St. Brendan’s. 0-13. HT. 1-5. 0-3.
The dominant feature of both games was the strong breeze which blew from the Mitchell’s end. Ardfert had the use of it in the first half but made such poor use that one feared for them in the second half. In fairness to them they played with much more intensity and purpose against the wind in the secondhalf. Causeway started with great energy in spite of that wind. Their backs were bullet proof with Sean Sheehan and Jason Diggins being particularly good and Brandon Barrett was a dominant figure at midfield. The highlight of that opening half was the Causeway goal. A sideline puck went sailing in and Gavin Doooley doubled on the ball in the air for a truly spectacular goal. How seldom we see that skill executed nowadays even at the highest level.
Ardfert came out a different team after the break and gave Causeway more than they bargained for for long stages. John Egan .quiet in the first half, sprang to life and scored a marvelous point from the terrace side . He scored six from frees Darren Dineen was a powerful figure at wingback and Daithi Griffin was prominent at midfield , scoring two good points. In spite of that defiance , Causeway reasserted themselves.. They had major figures all over the place with whom Ardfert could not compete. In that second half Joseph Diggins was a leader on the forty and Dan Goggins was classy and penetrative at wing forward but it was Brandon Barrett at midfield who was Numero Uno. He scored five from play and four from frees. You deserve to be on the winning side after a supreme performance like that

Lixnaw 0-15 Kilmoyley 0-12. HT. 0-6. 0-8
This was poor fare , not helped of course by that strong breeze . Lixnaw played against in the first and got off to a great start when their wizard , Shane Conway, banged over a great point. He banged over another great one in the second half. He danced a horn pipe to create a point for Ricky Heffernan in the first half and danced another horn pipe in the second half to create one for for Jason Wallace . But he probably was not as prominent as one would have expected. Raymond Galvin came on in the second half and made a big contribution. John Griffin was classy as usual at wingback and Ricky Heffernan scored three , he is always a handful.
Maurice O’Connor scored seven frees who surprisingly took them rather than Daniel Collins. Young Jordan Brick scored two points. He is a classy operator. Interestingly, Kilmoyley included Mathew Flanerty and Barry O’Sullivan . Mathew did not feature very much but Barry gave a full blooded , robust performance at midfield. I wonder would Fintan O’Connor be interested? Of course Barry is a vet and presumably would not have time for intercounty level.
In my view Causeway were far more impressive than Lixnaw today but that may count for little come final time.

€20 adult ticket to the final on Sunday. In the earlier rounds, €15 saw you through the entire weekend! Very unfair once again but, at this stage, it isn't even surprising anymore.

Causeway 2-13 Lixnaw 1-13 HT 1-7 0-5
I wrote here after the semi-finals that Causeway were more impressive winners than Lixnaw that day. That form line was borne out today as Causeway were convincing winners , more convincing than the one score difference at the end. They look to be a very formidable team and I will be disappointed if they do not do themselves justice in the future Munster campaign.
Causeway played with the wind in the first half and if their shooting was not so wayward they would have had a more significant lead at half time. In that half, full forward, Colum Harty, tormented Lixnaw. A strong, fast, forceful whirlwind he struck 1-2 in that half and was a little unlucky for a further goal. Brandon Barrett played in the half forward line rather than in midfield and while not as dominant as in the semi-final he still was hugely influential, scoring five from frees and two from play, one of those in the second half was a massive effort from the stand side. In that opening half Lixnaw did create a couple of goal chances and Causeway have goalie John Mike Dooley to thank for keeping their goal in a virginal state. One of the saves was from a wicked Michael Conway shot , the other one may have been from the wily, ever young Michael as well. Michael troubled Causeway all through.
Lixnaw started the second half well, scoring two early points , reducing the deficit to two. However, Causeway were well able for the challenge and when the rampaging Colum Harty scored his second goal it was all over bar a late Lixnaw penalty. Jeremy McKenna , I think it was he, was fouled and Shane Conway blasted the ball home. People started to get excited now but Causeway were watertight thereafter and really should not have allowed themselves to be just a late, late, sucker punch goal away from only securing a draw.
Early in the game Jason Diggins at CHB got a yellow card for a foul on Jason Wallace and one feared he may have been subsequently impeded. Not a bit. He was invincible all through. Dan Goggin , nominally a corner forward, played the second half around the midfield area and was one of the best performers on the field.
John Griffin as always was balletic like at midfield but became less prominent as the game wore on. Shane Conway scored nine from frees , two from play and of course the penalty. A bountiful harvest but in general play, no matter how much he wriggled, and he can wriggle, he met roadblocks in every avenue. Big brother Michael got two from play and still retains s smidgen of that one time awesome class. Old soldiers never die they just fade away. Michael may you remain forever young. Another magician from that same era, James Flaherty, came on but the ball just would not come his way. A pity.
A fine crowd showed up on a beautiful day.
P.S. I saw the second half of the minor match. Full of excitement and full of fine hurling. Ballyduff kept their noses in front all through that half by a point or two and then you guessed it, a late, late Crotta goal to snatch it a by a point. Those late goals are sickeners!
P.P.S. The East Kerry winning hurling team of 1969 was introduced at half time. That team included Johnny Culloty, Brendan Lynch, Tom Prendergast and Derry Crowley. The beaten Austin Stacks team included Niall Sheehy.

great reporting veteran as ever
Causeway's desire and hunger to end a 21 year drought brought a great crowd and buzz to Austin Stack Park today with scenes at the end that warm the pits of the heart the kind you see when you see a club side end a famine.
Causeway are a well balanced side and deserving champions. How strange to see that former ace goal poacher John Mike Dooley now playing in goals and doing so well there. Veteran performer but such an influence still. Lixnaw did not play as well as a team as Causeway and perhaps the long spell without success meant Causeway had the extra hunger. Causeway have such a long break to the Munster Club, they will have plenty to celebrate before returning to training to prepare for Munster. I think they will do well in Munster. Brandon Barrett, Colum Harty, Gavin Dooley, Brian Murphy , the Diggin's and more looked well equipped to take on what is in Munster
Crotta win yet another minor title - must be 3rd in 4 years, perhaps the rising force and what a day it will be when they end their barren spell dating back to 1968. Kilgarvan retained their intermediate title Saturday night in Killarney and that win will be celebrated back in the Roughty Valley. Some fine young players in Kilgarvan
A great touch to see the Killarney\East Kerry side of 1969 honoured. Johnny Culloty a prince of sportsmen, better known as a footballer but what a hurler as well and a fine Killarney team he played on. A pity hurling went into decline in Killarney and East Kerry after that success. St Pats, Dr Crokes and Rathmore promoting juvenile hurling now and Crokes have a decent intermediate team so who knows maybe a brighter future .....

Interestingly, Paul Geaney played hurling with Dingle to under 14 and after that all the way to under 21 level with Kilmoyley , was a fine hurling forward too, won an all Ireland under 21 b medal with Kerry hurlers like Barry Sullivan did. Dingle had hurling teams in the past at adult level once, it is a long time ago now though! there is interest in hurling in the west still when you see men heading North to play it and as I said Geaney did the same

They put on a great show at the county hurling in Tralee even if 20e is too steep eight weeks out from a no deal Brexit! great occasion in Tralee on Sunday, the 1 wk build up to the final doesn't give clubs any time to organise bunting, flags etc and perhaps the county board should just give the hurling championship an extra fortnight to run it off. all said a super weekend of hurling with 3 county finals played in good weather and for those that like both codes a bit of distraction from next weekend to take the mind off it. yeah Mickmack , Causeway could win a few but Lixnaw and Crotta will be strong next few seasons, Ballyduff & Kilmoyley are slipping a bit. St Brendans just a bit short of the standard to win it out.

Donal O'Sullivan (Kilgarvan) starting team without a shadow of doubt but he likely to be with the Kerry under 20 footballers Gearoid Fennessy & Liam Twomey both Kilgarvan are good enough for the panel and could push on to make the team. They were already in around the senior panel in 2019 Michael Lenihan Dr Crokes also has a lot of potential, was on the Kerry under 20 hurling team in 2019

a real boost for those that promote hurling in these clubs
the discussion will soon switch to whether this combination will context the senior championship next year

Anyway it is a county board decision not a north kerry clubs decisions so the county board can lead on it. South Kerry played as an entity in the senior championship on several occassions in the past with constituent clubs playing still at intermediate. This happened up to the end of the 2000s. At the moment if South Kerry can mobilise & organise, the kilgarvan, kenmare, crokes combination can be a force in the senior championship

I could never understand as to why kilgarvan/kenmare entered the SHC a few years ago the way they did. Would make a lot more sene to enter as South Kerry. At seinor level they could add St. Pats into the mix as well. The South Kerry team during the 2000's was never really going to work when you had Stacks in Tralee and Kenmare in the South. Don't think they ever really trained or anything. I might be wrong be i think South Kerry entered the Intermediate one year

Disapointing result for Causeway today. Begs the questions of why the county championship is played off so early. Whats the rush? Over two months wait without a game is just madness

Stephen Bennett and his three brothers were the difference apparently.
Causeway can have no excuse. They has plenty of time between the county final win to celebrate in style and then settle back into preparation for this.

Over two months wait without a game is just madness I agree with MickMack. Causeway had time to celebrate a great and overdue championship success and well they should. They then had time to get back into training for the match and by all accounts prepared very well. At the end of the day , they played well but the Bennetts are established senior inter county hurlers some of whom have played in the all Ireland senior final. that bit of quality edged it for Ballysaggert plus home advantage and not the timing of the county championship. The fact of the matter no Kerry club has won the intermediate munster championship title yet and this was the case in the old county championship time line as well. I do think the co board should allow 2 extra weeks for the championship though, let it run on 2 weeks later. I think that is the best that overall fixtures calendar can allow.
