So was a kickout going out directly for a fifty, gas altogether in fairness. As gas as a goalie dropping a ball bouncing into his midriff in the mayo league game and giving away a tap over free. In the first 3 games I haven't seen any improvement in the goal keeping situation.

It's fair to say none of our options inspire much confidence at the moment.

His kickouts are far better then anything else we have seen he made a great tackle last week and was incorrectly judged to have fouled the forward. A lad needs more than 3 games to get used to a county set up. Kelly has had years sorry to be harsh but we need to stick with Murphy.

That's a good team for Sunday. For February, it's a very good team. The young lads are getting good game time and, at the same time, the side is starting to take on a settled look.
So enough of the nit-picking lads, please.

No but what I am saying is that goalies do make silly errors sometimes. Did we have a problem with Kelly in 2014? Has he disimproved since or do we have an issue with goalie coaching within the Kerry setup? Likewise with Kealy. Remember these guys are hardly playing with their clubs so all the coaching is within the county system. I do think Murphy could have done better on some of the goals that we have conceded in the league.

I don't want to drag this out unnecessarily but yes in 2014 in Limerick there were faults which resulted in goals. I hate name checking players as they are amature lads but I feel very strongly about this last year's semi final was the final straw for me. Murphy is playing for the county champions and should be given the whole league, No rotation, no resting.

Even Cluxton makes the odd goalkeeping mistakes. What we need is a keeper with a cool head who is about to ensure kerry retain possession from about 90% of restarts. Bryan Kelly is a "lamp it as far as you can" man as far as i can see. That clearly didnt do in 2017.

It’s going to be a long night if we have only got as far as the goalie for Sunday. We’d make great selectors:-))

Saw this comment tonight (presumably from Mayo fan) in relation to Rob Hennelly coming in for David Clarke this weekend..."What is that gobsh*te doing in goal". Supporters, huh? At least we haven't descended to that level.

Why shouldn't Kelly get a game at some stage; you'd imagine everyone else on the panel will and it's the league anyway. I can't understand why Dublin's reserve keepers stick around, training away and never getting game time. The backroom must be plying them with women or something. They don't. Google Shane Supple.

Could it be that the problem is not Shane Murphy or Brian Kelly but rather the options we are giving them for kick outs and our total absence of a lockout strategy? Both are good goalkeepers but in so called performance terms, I don’t think there has been much obvious difference in what we have seen to date. It seems to me that the problem is not the individual but the system or lack of a system?

We are always far too harsh on our goalkeepers and never seem to have a noticeable kickout strategy.

I'll be down in Castlebar the weekend , but very interested in this game. Felt Kerry were going to beat Monaghan in second half last week, but just came up short. Although to be honest I thought Monaghon were very poor as the game wore on . Sean o Shea impresses me every time I see him play. A few nice match ups to look forward to. What's the feeling in Dublin this year? Confident of 4 in a row and then 5? Like yourselves hoping to unearth a few players in league that will strengthen the team come championship. As regards Sam. After the league finished last year it was Dublin, Kerry, Mayo Tyrone mentioned in that order. Tyrone have been slightly written off because of the way Dublin beat them last year and Galway seem to have taken their place in the pecking order. Yet Kerry disposed of Galway easily last year when it mattered and Galway have yet to win a championship game in Crokepark since 2001. So while Galway are improving possibly still a bit to go(remember Derry in 2014 flying through the league and making the final ) Mayo after the semi-final victory over yourselves last year , looked very good and seemed to have got one monkey of their back, but have been far from impressive in league although this could change tonight and a different narrative would be spoken tomorrow. They have a lot of guys working and studying in Dublin and this has to take its toll this time of the year. I'd be watching Kerry very closely as don't want a repeat of 1975. Clifford , Shanahan and O Shea to name a few are impressive , I guess their is a big responsibility on Fitzmaurice shoulders now how to use the talent that is clearly coming through.

Strange that they have named 28 players when a match day squad is 26 - are some players carrying a knock and not expected to line out. Thought I read somewhere that having more than 26 incurs a fine (maybe that is Championship)

It seems to me that you have to get a keeper who isnt nervous of it first of all and that confidence will radiate out to others. Kerry got 1.05 v Dublin off of Dublins kickout in a league game in Killarney two or three years ago. It wasnt Cluxton in goal. The Dublin keeper looked totally rattled and the rest of the Dublin defense were all over the place as a result when he went to take the kickout. Twas a bad day. Moran kicked a savage point into the wind and rain from play. I cant remember much more from that game.

On the kickouts.
Do you think Kerry would ever do something as radical as Mayo did in the replay last year.
We had savaged them on their own kickouts in the drawn game.
6 days later they came up with the huddle of players in the middle just splitting to the wings and dramatically improved winning their own kickouts.
Obviously they had practiced this scenario at training sessions during the year in case they needed to use it.
I get the feeling our lads would not have been capable of this as they would not have worked on it before and it would be impossible to get it right after practising it for one midweek session.
When you see the shambles we were trying to play with 7 backs in that game, sometimes you begin to wonder what exactly they do during the 120 odd field sessions they do in a year.

We've rotated the keeper since 2013-14 and have made no progress. Tomorrow just looks like more of the same, going around in circles and going nowhere.

Shot stopping seems to have regressed, Six raspers in three games without a laying a finger tip on them. The kick out has only marginally improved.

Kerry wont get a summer result against Dublin without a serious improvement and an addressing of the restart. Modern exceptional goal keeping is a corner stone of the modern game.

Ball has to travel 13m and cross the 20m line. So if it goes straight out or slightly left or right it has to travel a further 6m or it will be pulled for a hop ball.

Classic spin, I doubt any player is happy to be on the bench. This was in 2008. Murphy is no Cluxton.

I have never rated Kelly that much and would have Kealy before him every day of the week. However it seems that kealy not unreasonably so is not just going to be a panel member at his age My only point is that I think both keepers should get a least a couple of league games each whoever they are. This is something I have been saying for years. We have lost some good keepers over the years due to their lack of game time. It also matters if we need to change keepers later in the year for whatever reason. The Cluxton example is exceptional in every sense and not necessarily an example for everyone else.
