While Clifford is a young man at peak fitness, the problem is he is an 18 year old with a weight of expectation on his shoulders being asked to play Sun, Tue (including a trek to/from Belfast), Sat (including a trek to/from Castlebar), Tue and all against opponents who are seasoned and in some cases 10 years older and stronger. Div 1 of the League and the knock out nature of the Sigerson are not for tge faint hearted. Fatigue is a primary cause of injury.
Its a pretty big ask as far as I am concerned and is something of a blind eye by the GAA in terms of player welfare.

Young men at peak fitness - what's the problem? I really can't see why there should be any difficulty playing 70 mins every 3 days. Professional players would struggle with that,That's a crazy dangerous view and i believe its people who think like this are a huge danger to players

I wonder how much some of us know about what is a sensible workload for players and you'd be sure enough that management (fitness, skill tacticians and selectors) know what they are at, David wouldn't be much of a fool either when it comes to knowing his limits. Ah good to be cautious but if he is good enough he is old enough and he was used in a measured manner v Donegal. He is a fair cut of a man who is also hard to get a hit on - speaking of which did anyone else notice how much Jason has come on S&C wise?, he took a hit from Dgal that would have damaged another man and this is this type of step improvement that will make the difference, if the S&C works as well for others and of which there are many then we have good days ahead.
Good luck this evening and well done to the travelling supporters, down with a dose here and I'd hate to pass it on to my auld Mayo friendies!

Do you think he'd have his hottest prospects playing in a February league game if he thought it might threaten their future careers? There's a whole professional backroom set-up at this level, including medical/physio personnel. We have to assume people know what they're doing.

You can only judge Fitzmaurice on his previous actions. He has no proven form in properly developing young players so I think its fair to question the amount of game time Clifford has been exposed to lately especially when you factor in the amount of travel done as well. Travelling really hinders recovery.
Throughout his tenure he has been an ultra cautious manager as regards putting his faith in young players and has over reacted when the heat was on. The two times he put youngsters into the championship team (Jack Sherwood and Tom O'Sullivan), they were thrown in at the deep end as they were not given any game time in the previous championship games and were ill prepared for what was ahead. That was reckless from him.
Sherwood was in 2013, he made the same mistake 4 years later with O'Suillvan so I think its fair to be skeptical of Fitzmaurices ability to develop players until he has proven otherwise. After all he has been in charge for 5 years and the evidence of those years suggests he can't.

Why was Hassett telling Geaney not to take the penalty? Surely this would have been discussed. David Clifford was playing his fourth match in 10 days; where is the cohesion in all of this?

Too much pressure to put on O Shea- Hassett should be kept off the pitch permanently after his semi final antics last year On Clifford- I like many others expected him to not start tonight due to the application of common sense

So it looks like we'll be masquerading as Listowel Emmets when change colours will be required. They are a little tough on the eye and I feel a little pang of longing for the blue and navy horror show.

Wow, that was some shameful cynical stuff by Kerry in the last 15mins! Tyrone would have been proud of it!

I would describe it as the stuff that the contributors on here normally complain about. PG to miss a simple fist over the bar and then stop the kick out... If someone did that to us we would be crying blue murder! So to not give out about it would be extremely hypocrisy.

Management terrible on Shanahan - on a yellow and he keeps fouling!!!! Ref left him off twice, gave the line an option, still could not see it! Crowley was unlucky, had to make a tackle! Great win, there’s a team in there if only management get their act together.

Talking of cynical, the no show for minutes by Mayo team for 2nd half was poor. Shanahan should have being pulled by management before getting the line, you sensed what was coming next. Great 2 points away, sets the youngsters up nicely, they weren't going to be bullied tonight.

Tomas who? Please go to another forum if you wish to spout bile. Here were two teams unwilling to bow the knee and in so doing delivered an exciting match. Mayo were equally deserving of being shorn of men but this time Kerry paid the price of confrontation. The Kerry players responded in a way that indicates resolve and a stubbornness upon which fine teams are forged.

Well it wasn't pretty and again we had to work our way through adversity but we ground out another win and with 13 men against 15. The crazy thing was Mayo only managed to score one point against the 13. Tonight will be remembered as the night the youngsters came of age. And a real team effort. The pattern continues. We wouldn't have survived that match last year. Now for Monaghan and remember how we let them boss us on our home turf last year. I don't think we'll see a repeat.

What a courageous second half display that will be in the bank for the summer. Really positive and optimistic about this team. Ps Undecided about the jersey!

It is part and parcel of laying down a marker.
As I said call it what you like. But we will not be bullied, and that gave me a boost tonight.
The game has moved on, for the better or not is debatable.
