Kealy got a raw deal this year. Did well in the League Final and then dropped. Better keeper than Kelly. The two best keepers in Kerry are in there now so we'll see what happens. I would have Kelly ranked 4th on my list. 1 Shane Ryan 2 Shane Murphy 3 Brendan Kealy 4 Brian Kelly 5 Tomas Mac an tSaoir.

Has there ever been a Kerry player that's been crtitised as much as him?

Firstly, thanks to Brendan Kealy for all his service and giving his absolute best in our beloved Green&Gold. We should respect this decision, and really who knows if Brendan Kealy had any other choice? In a world of shrinking personal privacy few individuals it seems to me, get dropped or sacked anymore in sport or work life (unless it’s a mass layoff), people just leave by ‘mutual consent’ or apparently they ‘voluntarily walk’ and of course people do just move on with their lives. Only those involved know the real truth.
Looking at this coldly, Kerry has had only adequate cover in goal for a number of seasons. Adequate cover but no more than this, is simply not good enough for an elite side at the highest level. No one needs to tell a guy as smart as Éamonn Fitzmaurice this who clearly is going around the business of resolving the issue.
Kealy was a great shot stopper but being a good shot stopper is no longer enough. I would agree with an early contributor that at times Brendan lacked composure, especially in high-pressure situations with a game in the melting pot and minutes on the clock. Still my choice would have been Kealy ahead of Brian Kelly at the minute who is even more disappointing for me, as having won an All Ireland on the field of play in 2014 I would have thought we would see more confidence and rapid development from Brain Kelly. Hitherto, Kelly’s development has not materialised as expected.
I’ve been impressed with Shane Ryan, his young but perhaps within the next 12 months Ryan will finally be the piece that resolves a long-standing puzzle for Éamonn Fitzmaurice. I’m not ruling out Shane Murphy either but Ryan to me appears the better, near to long-term prospect.

Shane Ryan is the best Keeper for me in the County. I have watched him for years. He has a very good kick out. He is confident. Good under a high ball. Very agile for a big guy can get down fast and is good at saving penalties. Should have been in there at the start of the year. Shane Murphy having a great year again. Watched him a lot this year for Crokes and has been solid. Excellent kick out. Very good one on one with a Forward. Not as big and imposing as Ryan but has quickness and good judgment. Both of them would walk on a lot of County teams. I think Fitzmaurice has made a mistake not bringing them in sooner.

Kealy was probably the best shot stopper in the squad. Not at all convinced by Kelly. Even though we won an all Ireland with him in goals. I don't think he is as agile as Kealy and his kick out isn't better either. I don't think the rathmore keeper can expect to be Kerry No. 1 when he doesn't play their at all for the club etc. Goalkeeper is a specialist position, you can't really flit in and out of it at the top level. Hopefully the lad from Crokes gets a run during next years league or Ryan goes in goals full-time ( would be a blow to rathmore though) You mean in goals fulltime for Rathmore? Rathmore management are hardly going to say "Shane is most effective for us outfield and makes Rathmore a better team overall when outfield but it would be better for Kerry if we play him in goals so let's keep him in goals"

He's a fair operator in the full forward position for Rathmore as well. So he isnt going to be playing in goals apart from when he is with the county team? Will this come against him in the long run? Or does it even matter if he is getting enough exposure to his goal keeping duties inside at training? Didnt Banty put, the full back in goals for a game in ulster when his first choice keeper got injured in the run up to a game. If memory serves me right didnt the sub keeper at the time walk from the panel over this.

Shane Ryan seems to prefer playing in the full forward line though which would raise question marks about his desire to be our No 1 - opted out of U-21s in 2016 as he wished to play outfield, played Sigerson this year again in the full forward line. Has, more recently reverted to playing in goals for Rathmore in county league so hopefully this will continue. Shane Murphy is more than well capable of manning the gap should Kelly be replaced - excellent restarts which is something that cannot be said about his competitors.

There is no doubt in my mind that Shane Murphy is the best shot stopper and has the best kick outs in the county, his weakness seems to be under the high ball. Kelly and Shane Ryan definitely seem to be more competent in this regard. Some of Murphy's shot stopping is exceptional and his kick out is superb, both long and short. He has assisted numerous scores for the Crokes this year directly after Crokes have conceded a score themselves. He is very sharp to have the ball on the tee and ping it over midfield straight into a half forwards hands. I haven't seen a whole pile of Ryan in goal, maybe 5 or 6 games and he has been impressive enough. Shane Ryan is a solid option but Shane Murphy is a match winner....which does Eamonn want??

I think Murphy is good but I've never looked at him and thought that he was a really top class keeper- but maybe I havent seen enough of him.
Anytime I have seen Shane Ryan- I have really though that this lad will make it

I never thought Kelly was great under the highball to be honest. He's the number one for the remainder of the season. I think Eamonn is conservative in introducing players by nature so unless one of the new lads is absolute on fire it'll be next years league before we judge them. Unless Crokes go on another all Ireland run which would mean we see little of Murphy

Christ, ye are being very critical of kelly which is unjustified to be fair. Kickouts are also down to player movement outside. Not all about the goalkeeper. Kerry's movement from defenders/midfielders need to improve.

While I would put Brendan marginally ahead of Brian I am. not sure that he has valid grounds for this action. He got plenty of game time during the NFL and in other years but his panic attack at the end against Dublin probably sealed his fate. Players complaining about lack of game time seems to be a modern phenomenon. The former Kilkenny goalkeeper , Noel Skehan, sat on the bench for years as understudy to Ollie Walsh. He picked up three or four All Ireland medals in that role. When Ollie retired he picked three or four more as first choice keeper. I wonder will Brendan regret this decision, particularly if he misses out on a medal come September. In any case, I sincerely wish him well. Not really the same situation, in fairness. Kealy isn't exactly the young pretender here. Was first choice, then wasn't, then was again, now isn't. Probably reckons he can't do any more to get between the chalklines at this stage and that it's just not worth all the lifestyle sacrifices at this hour of his life. By far the better of the two for me but then again my opinion doesn't count for sh*t at the end of the day. Good luck to him anyway.

I thought Kealy was a solid keeper, little between him and Kelly. Many media sites say he has five Munster medals, I reckon he has seven, from 10,11,13,14,15,16 and 17.

Interesting how the role of a keeper has been so transformed in recent years. Also with regard to comments that Shane Ryan playing outfield is a problem - the minor keeper for the past two successful years never played in goal for club or school or county development squads (midfielder from u14-u16).

Good luck to him anyway Some of our more informed hurling members on here may correct me on this but my memory is that Noel Skehan spent the guts of ten years on the bench as understudy to Ollie Walsh and did not take over until he was in his late twenties and went to win four or five more medals!

There was a time when shot stopping was the main thing one looked for in a keeper but this was in the pre-defensive era.
The massed defense and sweeper system means few goal chances. Kealy is an outstanding shot stopper. One of the best.
Being able to pull down a ball that is scraping over the bar is important and Kealy seldom did that. He tipped one over the bar v Donegal in 2012 while the Donegal keeper fetched a similar one. Thats a two point swing in a game Kerry lost by a point.
Kealy didnt seem to have the ability to kick a ball 55 yards and most of his kickouts were of the chipped variety that didnt travel that far. So accuracy was therefore crucial and that was absent for a long time. However that aspect of his game improved immeasurably in the recent past and his kickouts were first class in the league final till the final five minutes when he seemed to panic bigtime.
Panic set in after the goal in the 2011 final. The ball was kicked out within seconds and promptly kicked backed over the bar by Dublin. If ever there was a time to tie your laces or get a groin strain for a minute...that was it.
The keeper with a big game temperament is the main man now and being the goalie when the opposition move up to close you down on the kickout requires nerves. It helps to have a 60 yards kick in your artillery.
I could never understand how EF didnt play Kelly in 2015. Unfathomable in my book but EF has given us a few unfathomable decisions over the years.
I am giving my honest opinion here.
Thank you Brendan for your time and years of unstinting service. You did your best always. Thats all anyone can ask.

Kealy did win an all star in 2015 so hardly the worst call of eamonn's. Time will tell with Kelly but he was lucky in 2014 to get away with the mistakes he made

I'd say it was the clustercuss scooping the ball on the ground then almost giving a penalty away in same move, in league final, that caused his current demoted status. Great shot stopper and had really improved his kicking in the last year. I do think he has a default go to ground, on attempting goal saves, that is not always the only fit for a situation. Example: Barry O'Driscoll goal at death in 2015 Munster final, even Kevin McMenamon goal in 11, the latter might be a bit harsh. He does have a lot of experience and the players were wired into how he operates. Sorry to see him depart.

Goof luck to Brendan - gave it his best over many years which is all that can be asked. Brave decision to do it mid season.
Looking forward to the next generation - with the mark changing the game slightly again a keeper with a long kick-out may be coming back in to vogue.
Liked an earlier comment re Dublin lads like fly's in a bottle when they concede a score. How many times have we seen Paul Flynn or Kilkenny collect a kickout from Cluxton - they make it 'easy' for him. Our lads have not yet matched that and I think that is the main difference still - if we can match that - as in our half forwards making themselves available and able to field it, we have the artillery to complete the job. Not as easy as it looks though - takes a good engine, good fielding, and a goalie able to ping it to the spot 90% of the time. Something to practice in training...

Well done to him and I think that a FB can make or break a goalie, a key combination to get right.

I don't really think Brendan can have to many complaints in my opinion. While his kicking and shot stopping was better than Kelly when as fergie called it was squeaky bum time there was a too many costly errors at bad times. Best of luck to the new boys joining the panel looking forward to seeing them in the Kerry goal.
