I understand clubs have been invited by the County Board to discuss the possibility of changes to the age groups of club competitions to U17s, 15s, 13s and 11s. This has obviously been prompted by the change in minor age at inter county level.
It's a big gap from u17 to playing senior football with your club. Would this necessitate an u19 county league ? What are the implications for other ages.
Would be interested to see what posters think.

Makes sense,No point in having an u18 club championship when a huge proportion would be ineligible for the county minors.
Don't think it's such a huge jump for an over 17 to play senior plus there would still be u20/junior football etc.. So i think there is enough football to cater for all.
The one huge thing i believe will come of this is clubs will have to really concentrate on retaining players out of the u17 age group. That is not being done at the moment by many clubs.
Could the junior leagues be expanded and played over a longer time frame?
The other massive positive is there now will be a distinct separation between juvenile & adult football

I thought there is still going to be club Under 18 competitions and thats its only at inter-county thats its changed to Under 17.
The Under 16 county league and championship is played during the summer months - its hard to see how this could continue if the Kerry Under 17 team make the final in September.
I wonder when whatever committee made the decision to change from U18 to U17 did they foresee the difficulties they are creating.

From what I hear, there are 3-4 counties already after changing their underage structure to odd year groups, under encouragement from Croke Park. Wicklow is one.

Is there even a need for the county board to discuss this? It seems obvious that we would move to align our underage structures with the under 17 intercounty championship. I struggle to see a solid argument against this.

I struggle to see a solid argument against this. The main argument I see is the struggle to keep players after they leave minor level at the moment. And I think this will only get worse if it drops to U17. It can be a big step up to senior and B team games in midweek and on Friday nights does not appeal to players in college for example who might be working summer jobs when they finish at this time of the year. Under 21 (20) competitions are haphazard in the county. A club might have 2 or 3 games at this level a year if they are lucky.

Logical move, but I agree that is has the potential to exacerbate the tendency to loose players as they go from juvenile to senior ranks. I still believe the moving of the minor to u17 was the wrong thing and a move to u19 would have achieved far more in terms of retaining players and transitioning them to senior ranks. Most finish school as u18's and drift away from sport as they leave home and head off to work or college - an u-19 grade would have ensured more effort was put in to keeping contact.

Although I completely agree with you and wouldn't have changed the setup at all- I think that argument is lost and we need to move to align ourselves with the intercounty scene as otherwise it will hinder us
