I've often heard about Billy Morgan and Johnny Mulvihill squaring up on the sideline of a Munster final but never quite found out the background to it or why they were stuck in each other. I've seen it printed that something also happened later that evening in Morgan's Bar. Could anyone shed any further light on this episode?

Mulvilhill and Morgan were in UCC at the same time I think so knew each other well enough. I think the sideline spat was nothing much, it was pretty much a case of them disputing a line ball or something like that. I'm not sure what happened (if anything) later in Morgan's bar.
1994 was a day when Kerry could well have beaten Cork. It just drifted away towards the end.

I don't think Billy and Johnny would have been in UCC at the same time. Billy would have been there in the sixties while Johnny would not have there until the mid seventies.. As far as I can recall Johnny was on the vistorious Kerry minor team in 1975. I can vouch for what happened in Billy's bar afterwards. Ogie Moran , Johnny and possibly Eoin Liston went to the bar afterwards, in spite of the disappointment of the defeat and were having their pints when Billy arrived in and ordered them to leave. This was madness of course from a business and sporting standpoint especially as Cork were after winning. Billy realised this the next day and a mutual old friend , Paidi O'Se, was asked by Billy to act as mediator to mend fences which was duly done. Billy was very hot headed like that but when the dust settled he was never slow to admit culpability. Kerry played unexpectedly well that day and looked as if they were going to win before being undone by a Stephen O'Brien goal towards the end , if my memory serves me right.

I think Paidi brought Billy back to Ventry as part of the peace process.
Billy Morgan has been a wonderful servant to Cork football. It has always appeared that beating Kerry was his primary passion, it is this passion that I admire so much.

Johnny Mulvihill didn't feature in the '75 minors - he would be of an older vintage than that.
Morgans explosiveness was legendary - there is a story about how he dealt with a situation as a teacher ...ended up in New York, met Larry Tomkins .......

Of course a very passionate Corkman, but any of the Kerry lads that played with UCC have huge praise for both his coaching and his personal support.

Anyone recall the day the bomber clashed with him for a high ball in a Munster final. Stretcher case that day if I recall correctly

I'm pretty sure there was some UCC connection, though of course Morgan must be older. Was he training the UCC team even then by any chance.

Morgan is 71 according to Wiki, born 2/2/1945. Johnny Mulvihill would be around the 60 mark now been a minor in '75.

A friend gave me the 1975 minor team today: Charlie Nelligan, Vincent O'Connor, Michael O'Sullivan, Michael Colgan, John Joe O'Connor, Mick Spillane, Gabriel Casey, Sean Walsh Neilly O'Donovan, Finan Scannell, Johnny Mulvihill, Robert Bunyan, Con O'Connor, Jack O'Shea, Paudie Sheehan .
Kerry won all three titles that year.
It is unlikely that Billy would have been involved with UCC at that time because he would still be playing with Nemo. I think it was a case of two very fiery , headstrong men disputing an official's decision etc. Johnny would have been as volatile as Billy in situations like that.
The Kerry u21 team in 1975 was, according to my contact: Charlie Nelligan, Kevin O'Donoghue, Paidi O'Se, Gerard Leahy, Mick Spillane, Tim Kennelly, Ogie Moran. Ger O'Driscoll Sean Walsh Barry Walsh, Mikey Sheehy, Dinny Murphy, To my Doyle, Jack O'Shea Pat Spillane.
I remember being at it up in Tipperary Town . Dublin would have had Brian Mullins.
That u21 team gave generously to subsequent senior teams!!

Johnny Mulvihill was indeed the centre forward on the '75 minors which was captained by Robert Bunyan of Ballydonoghue; the wing back was Joe Jo O'Connor of St Mary's now a vet practising in Listowel.
