Looks like Billy is not going forward to manage Cork next year.
Seems Cork County Board shafted him by not allowing him to pick his own selectors.
There will be mixed views in Kerry about him going.
I know he was not popular in Kerry at times to say the least. But he does have a good record overall at both club and county. The length of his managerial career is amazing and I can't ever see anyone equaling his record at club AND county level.
I know that he got up a lot of peoples noses over the past few years banging on about KErry being cynical.
However he didn't say a word about it this year. Its also said he gave an unreal speech in the Kerry dressing room after the AI final. Apparently he said no matter how much of a rival he was of Kerry he always admired our ability to play football.
I think Dara O Se was asked about the speech and summed it up by saying:
"Billy is Billy and Billy is Cork"
Like him or not but anyone with an interest in the game of football overall would have to say that Billy did do a lot for the game.
I think a lot of people in Kerry if they are honest disliked/hated Billy because he was a dangerous competent opponent.

I never particularly liked the mans attitude toward Kerry. Howver, he has to be admired for his perseverence in Cork despite the lack of support their footballers get relative to the hurlers. Hopefully Cork can land a manager next year capable of getting Cork to the last 4 a few more times.

Apart from his obvious and well document hatred of all things Kerry, you have to admire the man's passion and committment to Cork football. With Billy out of the equation, it beggers the question of who will be in charge next year? Any likely candidates?
A fresh start under a new manager is probably what Cork need after last September. Don't rule Cork out for 2008 just yet.

Billy was Billy and Billy was Cork. Billy lothed Kerry football supporters and Kerry football supporters lothed Billy.
He'll be missed - when you can't stand Cork, it is always handy to have one man to direct your fuming displeasure at!!

i wouldnt be a billy fan but you have to admire his commitment to cork. i think he was a bit blinded by his passion especially v kerry, when i jumped the very stupid and dangerous hand held barrier around croker{could start a thread there id say}i ran to the middle of the pitch, a good few minutes after whistle i might add after jumping over a guard who was like an old lady at beechers brook wit the horses jumping over her but there in the middle of d field was billy with his arms around d gooch and really hugging him as if to say you are a genius nice touch by billy

When paidi looked for one last year at the end of 2003 he wanted also to be able to pick his own selectors.
Jack was thew first manager of kerry with the luxury of being his own man and picking his own selectors.
Billy is 100% right in making this a resigning issue.

I have alot of admiration for Billy, he will indeed be missed.........but I dont believe he's really gone. Is it the end of an era, with Boylan, Morgan, and possibly Micko all about finished? Will Boylan be back? Hard to believe he wont be refreshed and hungry for one more crack with some county. After next year, I wouldnt mind seeing him with Dublin

Irrespective of what you think of Billy personally, to come out with the ridiculous coments some of ye are coming out with shows a definite lack of knowledge of football and what the man has achieved.

Billy first played in goals for Cork about 40 years ago........... after finishing as player he became Corks best manager.
He wears his heart on his sleeve. What you see is what you get.
He was always compulsive viewing and will be missed.
A bit of respect for him would go amiss around here.

In fairness to the man he has a great love for the jersey and puts his heart and soul into Cork football but when you go around constantly accusing the opposition of being cynical while you yourself constantly abuse officials then it's easy to see why some won't miss him

I think the board wanted rid of him anyway so they probably won't go knocking on his door again. There was an interesting article in the tribune on Sunday about it

Great great servant to the Gaa. Has helped keep the football flag flying for cork when under serious pressure and adversity from the Hurlers over thepast number of years - the old joke that after training the hurlers get steak and the footballers get chicken!!
One of my good friends played under him and respected him no end - as did all the other players. That says enough for me.
His "cynical" antics will be missed by all true Gaa followers....especially those of us on this website!
