Where have all the stars gone???

Has any one else seemed to notice that there is a genuine lack of bona fide star or great players in the football championship the days. And of those that do exist kerry seem to have most of them that may help explain why they are on top at the moment. By star player I mean a player that not only has the skill but also the temperment to deliver the big performance when it matters on the big day. Ignoring all the media bluster and hype there are only a few players I would rate in this category. The few players currently playing that I believe deliver on the big day when needed most and when the chips are down and have done so on a consistent basis are:lre players coming thru nowdays are listed below
The following is a list of players that have delivered consitently in big games when it mattered over the last ten years. Compare it to the list of those from the generation before and its clear that theres less and less hgh calibre players coming thru.




While this seems fair enough if u take into accoun the likes of fitz, canavan, joyce walsh, geraghty, McGeeny and McDermott all played in the era before i think it shows up the lack of qulaity in the modern game. What ever quality is there is spread pretty thinly around a few teams. The worrying thing is that there seems to be less and less big game star out there

By the way........ was it yourself who first suggested that Kieran Donaghy be moved to full forward.

I know I started the thread on it and was banging on bout it for ages. Id say I was on bout it during the league and def started a thread for championsip bout it.

Fair dues to you Lolly, you did indeed mention it way back in the league last year and if I remember correctly, you and I discussed the merits of his brief turns at full forward for Stacks as your formed your argment.

On the table above - I would hazzard a view that some of the players on the 1987 - 1996 are rose tinted inclusions and that the same will happen when you do this list in 2017.

No Dolan, No Munnally, no Whelan, no Cluxton, no Canty, no Donnellan?!

We also have to remember that from 1987 to 1996, Cork, Meath, Down, Derry, Donegal and Dublin all won All Irelands, three of the for the first time and the other three for the first time in ages. From 1997 to 2007, Kerry, Galway Meath, Tyrone and Armagh have won, and there's an extra year in there too. Two won for the first time, one for the first time in a while with a second all Ireland soon after. Meath kept winning after the first era and Kerry, well, Kerry dominated.

For a team to have a star player they don't have to win the All Ireland surely.

I think star players stand out less now as teams have learned how to wrap them up. The stars are still there, they just don't stand out as much.

Canty? Dont think hes donr consistently well on the big day, roasted this year in the final by gooch and donaghy, thought he had a poor munster as well this year. Was roasted by gooch in both games in munster last year only gooch left his shooting boots at home. Tommy Freeman? Based on what? Barry Owens maybe is the only fermanagh player.

Temperament is a big part of being a star player and taking the right options at the right time. Cluxton cost dublin dearly in this years semi and 2002 when he was sent off.

Dessie Dolan?? The lad that blew westmeaths best chance of beating meath in the champpionship by throwing a 13 yard free wide.

Mulleny is too in consistent and is very hot and cold i think. Tom Kelly and Joe higgins should be on the list.

Donellan? Was he really outstanding when the chips were down. Apart from few great runs down thru the years i dont think so. How many connacht finals was he marked awol for. He scored a great goal in 02 against kerry but did nothing apart from that. He was more or less redundant in the 2000 finals as well.

Whelan, Too in consistent and does not deliver on the big day when needed most

i think we could write pages on different players that should\shouldn't be in both categories, but looking at the bigger picture, i have to agree with Stacks... there were far more teams winning all-irelands in the first 10 years, hence more stars, we've only had about 4 or 5 teams winning all-irelands in last 10 years, hence less stars...

of course this is all based on Lolly's premise that the big players produce on the big day, thus her ruling out all players from weaker counties like Declan Browne...

As for picking holes in the actual players, even if i just go with Kerry, no Galvin, this man is made for big day, No Aidan O' Mahony MOTM last year and not far off it this year, no Declan O' Sullivan, huge Star... no Dara Cinneide, motm in 2002 final

and the first period, the Kerry players you picked baffle me, they really didn't do anything from 87... when i think of that era, i think of Flaherty and Breen....

Dont agree with you Lolly..... Canty, McDonald, Declan Brown,, Donnellan, Sean Og de Paor, Munnelly, brogan just to name a small few off the top of my head who whould be added above... some of your choices for stars in the 1st list are questionable! Cant imagine many kids tried to emulate Mick deegan in their back gardens!

I dunno bout canty at all. What has he done really? Id add Ciaran MacDoghnald alright to the list. Wouldnt really rate mulleny to be honest. Sean Og De Paor maybe but not too mad bout him at all. Mike Donellan, as i said before he blows very hot and cold. Great player on his day but a truly great player is some one u can rely on to produce. Declan browne fair enough was / is a great player. Wouldnt rate alan brogan at all, not really a great player at all. What has he done? His shooting is terrible and he too selfish to bring others into the game. Would rate jayo ahead of him

This man has been around for 6 seasons, has 4 Leinster medals, 2 all stars, was player of the series in last years International Rules series and has been very unlucky not to have played in an All Ireland Final so far. I think he is the finished article. He would make any inter-county team.

So what he has a good medal collection, big deal? Sure collie moran probably has the same collection. Does that mean hes a great player? Aussie rues dont matter a damn. He still doesnt have the temperment for the big day. Fair enough he played well against marc this year butr he take the wrong option so many times

Trust me on this one. Brogan is a very good footballer. He has what it takes and in my opinion will be the difference to Dublin winning an All Ireland in the very near future.

Maybe he will but he will have to start bringing others into the game. All great forwards of the modern era were good playmakers as well as score takers. Gooch,Donaghy,McDonald,McDonnell and joyce often create more than they score themselves

I think there's something in what Lolly says, in my opinion he was very frustrating this year, and could have achieved more. Having said that, he is one of the most direct, effective forwards in the game, and if he wasnt playing for Dublin, he would get more credit.

Now can any of you please copy me the list of players, which I've told yis a few times I cant see.
