REPORTS that Bank of Ireland are not buying into the new-look sponsorship of the All-Ireland championships for next year will come as a major disappointment to the GAA as they attempt to sign up six companies to finance the €29m mega-deal.
Bank of Ireland have been sole sponsors of the football championship since 1994 but it was reported over the weekend that they would not be involved with the new set-up, in which three backers are being sought for each code from next year on.
There will be no title sponsors and instead each company will share in the promotional outlets offered by a system that applies to all major world events such as rugby and soccer World Cups, Olympic Games and UEFA Champions' League.
The cost of becoming a sponsor for the football championship was set at €5.1m per company over three years while hurling was priced at €4.6m.
Sponsors have to sign up for three years which means that if the GAA succeed in completing the deal, they will earn €29.1m in the 2008, 2009 and 2010 seasons.
Guinness have been aboard as title sponsors of the hurling championship since 1995 and while to date they have made no official announcement about their intentions under the new system, it's thought they will continue.
The loss of a major blue chip company like Bank of Ireland would be a severe blow to the GAA's portfolio, though, especially at a time when they are trying to tie up the most ambitious sponsorship deal in the history of Irish sport and would hope other companies might take a lead from one of the market leaders.
