Murt Murphy had a couple of paragraphs about the Strand Road/Austin Stacks Tralee Board match in today's Irish Examiner. At the outset he stated that Tommy Walsh played at midfield. Now, the Irish Examiner is a national newspaper and ,of course ,GAA followers around the country would have little or no interest in the match per se but would be very interested in reading how Tommy played. Understandably, Murt went on to describe Tommy's contribution. Well no, he just wrote that he played! I wonder was Mr. Murphy at the match? That would be the only justification for writing such a report. We live in awful times. He was at the match going by his Twitter account to be fair. Mentioned there that Tommy had a good second quarter and described his booming first half point which I'm reliably informed was off his left peg. From what I was told Tommy was decent enough while rusty, looking for the ball constantly and getting on it a lot.

In Murt's defence I suppose he is allowed very little space for such a low key match and accordingly concentrated on the game in general. The Examiner do produce a great sports section on Monday and Kerry gets a fair shake always.

I've a sneaking suspicion that Kerry will go to the wire yet again to retain Division One status. I do expect us to do so.
I think Mayo will lay down an early marker under the stewardship of their new management. I fully expect them to leave Kerry with two points in the bag. They have much more to play for. I'm not sure will revenge be as much of a factor as impressing their new management. They will be hyped up for it I would imagine. So I anticipate a tough first day out for Kerry.
It would be great to lay down our own marker but first day back with most likely a very inexperienced side should allow for Mayo to dominate. No doubt there's a post All Ireland hangover still hanging about as well.
Still though isn't it great to be back.

Yup - on the basis of Fitzmaurice's record to date in the league, it's clear that it's not a massive priority and that the championship is what it's all about. The league is to bring on newer/younger players and develop options for the summer.

Tommy Walsh played 52 minutes against Stacks, he was a bit rusty at points, but that was to be expected. At one point he soloed a ball straight into a Stacks man's hand, jeers rang out from the Rock faithful in the terrace, all good natured.
He had plenty of possessions and indeed got a big score off his left in the first half. I was encouraged by how he took charge in the moments Strand Road were on top, overall his brother Sean had a better game though.
There was a bit of a worry however, when he was walking out of the dressing room after the match he did have a limp, hopefully nothing serious.

It would be great to see us start with a home win. Where will the scores come from without JOD? Mayo will love giving the guard of honour reserved for all ire champs or has that died out?

Guard of Honour only expected Round 1 now though?
I distinctly remember Kerry giving Derry a guard of honour in 1993 in Killarney. A google said it was Round 3 of the league.
It's a nice tradition in Round 1 anyway.

Sorry my mistake. It was just put to E Fitz on Second Captains... I might dig it out later. I listened back to Second Captains... it wasn't on that... interview from 28.15 here. Listening to Off the Ball now to check was it in their interview.. O.K. I found this... but no mention of guards of honour. Ah well.

I remember the Cork game in Tralee in 2011, a load of Cork fans made a burst down the steps and through the seats to take photos of the Kerry team lining up to give Cork a guard of honour. They were all delighted, except for the lad who slipped going over seat on the front row. I cant remember Kerry giving Dublin a guard of honour in Croke Park in the 2012 league game, or maybe the guy abseiling from the roof with the match ball and fire-works (and Jedward?) took away my concentration?

Kerry provided it that night as did the Dubs in Killarney 2010.

I don't know did I read this in the autobiography by Colm ORourke or Liam Hayes but anyway Meath were split down the middle on whether they should clap Dublin onto field as All Ireland Champs in Navan before a league game. A meeting was called and there was no consensus emerging, Eventually Gerry McEntee made a proposal which gained unanimous approval "I propose to clap them onto the field and then kick the sh1te out of them".

Cheers. Sounds like a soft gig! Wouldn't mind doing that myself. The definition of a Kerryman - goes into a revolving door behind you, but comes out ahead of you..... When I hear Darran talking about the state of his body, I can't help thinking back to the Kerry minor team he played on versus Tyrone and the amount of body-checks/tackles he was subject to. To this day I've never seem such cynicism from a minor team in terms of pulling a player down. Twas fairly vomitous to see such tactics from a minor team [twould be interesting if the Sunday Game looked back on that minor game and analysed how many black card offences the Tyrone lads were guilty of - twould have done Seanie Cavanagh proud to see the number of black card fouls committed by that Tyrone team]

Mickey ned, along with done journos criticised Tyrone afterwards for their unsavoury tactics- it was fairly disgusting to watch and an advert for why more than 1 ref is needed and also showed up how pointless linesmen and umpires are

With Mayo players saying they would like a League medal I expect them to field their strongest possible outfit. I expect Kerry to experiment a lot. Quite a few forwards and big Kerry stars are injured, rested or have retired. Lots of young Kerry players are flying with their colleges and would be committed to the Sigerson and also a lot of young talent involved with the minors and the U21s. I expect to see a young and experimental team to be announced tonight but I do think we can give Mayo a very good game. I would be surprised if we win on Sunday but not too surprised either. Say what you want, but Kerry are in a very good position to be in currently and I expect them to retain division one status. With 4 home games and a semi-home fixture in Cork it should be a very good league run. Depending on how well the U21s do and the colleges in the Sigerson I expect a lot of young players to be tried and tested in the league and hopefully we uncover another few Kerry stars. There is always this though www.irishtimes.com/sport/gaelic-games/gaelic-football/gavin-duffy-ineligibility-another-messy-situation-for-mayo-county-board-1.2083101
