I don't know what my credibility on here is, does anyone? But on the graves of my nearest and dearest, I'm 53 years of age, will every sinner on here, older and younger, read this, if you do and I kicked the bucket tomorrow, I'd die happy in the know that you'll have had the benefit of what I had when I was your tender age! WHAT'S AT LEAST EQUAL IN STATUS TO A CELTIC CROSS? RESPECT! The greatest all time Irishman, and his football was but a part, emulate him as you will, you could do worse! www.google.ie/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=dermot%20earley%20an%20officer%20and%20a%20gentlemanIf you need to validate my assertion, maybe ask the auld cadger that is our spiritual leader, the peerless Veteran! Agus, nil aon baint agam, I hope you all know wee K Man better after all these years to know 'tis my head and my heart talking!

I can vouch for that Dermot Earley was indeed the nicest and probably the most sincere man I ever met. I had the pleasure as a young man of training with Dermot on the Curragh plains [on army facilities and welcomed by him] where 9 or 10 of us kicked ball in the evening time Dermot would join us and even though we were not of his standard or footballing talent we were never left know it and everyone was treated with utmost respect. BTW his son Dermot on the Sunday Game gives each player due respect IMO achip off the block

My link was to a Google search, so much written and ballynamona's link is a good one as Earley was born in Mayo but was a Roscommon man, then top army man in Kildare, everyone wanted him.
The greatest never to win an All Ireland? Just get to know him in so much as you can and you will be the better for it, stories of him togging off from the boot of the car for a club match in Roscommon on a round trip of a night from Kildare would be par for the course; can you imagine him on a foreign mission with his troops, our troops?
Look, there is nothing anyone could say that will overstate the man. He was born in '48 so bear that in mind if you are delving into his career. Like many a great man his hands made him look smallish in a photo, he was big but the hands were disproportionately so if you are with me!
He was the ultimate leader and do we need a bit of that, I'd have him as Minister for Justice, he was much respected by subordinates, superiors and peers alike.
Kevin McStay who managed a barracks said that the traditional culture was when a superior came to visit his MO was looking for faults; Earley's was 'have you got everything you need'.
Would I have called the book, 'Earley, up he rises!'
A great Irishman.

I do remember McStay telling that story. To be honest I saw McStay in a different light when he was telling it. Kevin Myers is another public figure who is not easy to impress, but who was very complmentary re the late Dermot Earley.
I definitely think most GAA people would be savvy enough to use criteria other than AI medals when judging who are the greats of the game.

I read that kerryexile, Earley was, is, up there with the Paddy Bawns, but who is a hurler on the ditch to judge, there are times when you just have to say, 'hey my fellow fellows on that ditch, take my word', me thinks this is one of those times', if in doubt talk to an elder.
