Second Captains Live is the television debut of the multi-award winning radio team of Eoin McDevitt, Ken Early, Ciarán Murphy, Simon Hick and Mark Horgan.
The show will be the place in Irish television where sport meets entertainment. Each week Second Captains presenters (McDevitt, Early and Murphy) will be joined by three of our favourite Irish sports stars and together we'll discuss the week's major stories, drawing on our guests' experience of top class competition.
The show will also feature an additional interview with a big name guest and some classic RTÉ archive. It's a brand new format for Irish TV, filmed in front of an enthusiastic live studio audience.

Beginning tonight (September 10) on RTÉ Two after the Austria-Ireland World Cup qualifier, its presenters Eoin McDevitt, Ken Early and Ciaran Murphy chat and play with celebrity guests from inside and outside the sporting field.
Each week the Second Captains team will be joined by three of their favourite Irish sports stars and together they'll discuss the week's major stories, drawing on their guests' experience of top class competition.
Says series producer Mark Horgan:”The show is going to be a mixture of sports and entertainment that’s a bit of craic and filmed in front of a live audience.
“We always loved shows like Fantasy Football League and TFI Friday growing up and the programme is definitely influenced by them and it also has a bit of a Nighthawks feel to it.
“One of the great things about moving from radio to television is that we can now incorporate some incredible old RTÉ archive, so people will definitely be feeling nostalgic at certain points.
“We're also very excited about having Ronan O'Gara over from Paris for our first show, he's always an honest an open interviewee and there's plenty to talk about."
The four-part series will debut at 10.30pm tonight, while subsequent show will broadcast on Wednesday nights on Sept 18, 25 and Oct 2.

If they could somehow cut Ken Earley and his annoying change of tone out of it then it would be great. While telling a story- his voice alternates between at least 4 different tones and always rises to an annoying crescendo at some stage- his speech is like a winning song from XFactor.
Murph is top quality and phenomenally insightful

looks a bit like Top Gear. They should introduce a timed peno competition against the Sting Clucko for the celebrities.

Very good interview with ROG. Fitz wearing the number 10 in any of the field sports with a ball just seems about right Maith an fear ROG.

The set is a shambles. Can RTE really not afford something better? I pitied the guests who looked like they were sitting down into a 2nd hand settee that someone had rescued from the dump.
Also the way they kept repeating that ROG would be the "special" guest later made it sound as if everyone else they had on wasn't really all that important.
Hopefully it will improve with time.

Not a bad debut, but am I alone in having very little time for Mr. McConville? Once he started speaking at the end again, after the ROG interview, I was over to American Dad on 3e before you could say "aces high"

Also shocked by this, but great choice by ROG, seems Fitz is loved in Cork!!! Tony Davis had a serious man crush on Maurice during his playing days! Good show. Big fan of the boys when they were on the radio, tough to bring that to TV but they did a good job. Still can't get used to seeing Murph! He's got a short man's voice and doesn't look all that much like the culchie we know him to be! lol

No mention of the hurling.
Hard to take the show seriously as a result.

Also there are plenty other vehicles on TV / Radio covering every single aspect of the hurling - do we honestly need more? The interview with O'Gara was excellent. It was surprisingly revealing even for ROG who is not known to mince his words. The segment at the start was slightly fragmented although it was interesting to hear what McConville had to say about success and failure. He has featured prominently on the podcasts and is quite a good analyst - expect to see more.H Richie Sadlier is also a podcast regular and I have to say I enjoy his pieces. He has a knack of telling a yarn that keeps you engrossed and amused. I for one am looking forward very much to the next episode.

They were excellent on radio. McDevitt is an excellent presenter and contined in that fashion on Tue, but I'm not sure what Murph and Early are supposed to be doing? they hardly opened their mouths during interviews and as for Simon Hick - he always seems to be a wee bit of a spare wheel. The set is appalling,,, Good show though

As for Hick, he does alot of stuff behind the scenes, it's just a case of him being willing to roll his sleeves up and let the others take the piss out of him from time to time. Bit harsh of people to keep knocking the set. It's the first series of shows, maybe the first and last!!!! Do we really want big money spent on a set for a show that is somewhat risky? We do pay a tv license afterall. Plus it didn't need a sharp expensive looking set for these boys to become successful in the first place, I'd imagine the RTE accountants are keeping that in mind! lol

Hicks and Mark Horgan are producers. Without them no show. As for the set....come on! It's meant to be minimalist and any past / present student who has ever done the flatland thing will be only too familiar with the decor!

Eoin McDevitt will make the show compelling viewing even if there is a lot of silly stuff thrown in too.
Ronan's honesty was so refreshing. Oisin and Sadlier were interesting too.
Ken Early used to drive me nuts on the radio and I couldn't listen to him. He's a ringer for Shirley Temple.

Really enjoyed them on radio. Haven't seen it yet on telly. I couldn't care less about soccer or rugby to be honest but they can still make it entertaining. Mc Devitt is definitely the best of them. Their former slot on new stalk is a bit flat now. Parkinson's gets right up my nose.

Their former slot on new stalk is a bit flat now. Parkinson's gets right up my nose. I used to really dislike Parkinson... quite intensely however he actually does a lot of non-BS talk. For example they were talking about a different sport this evening and he cranked up and said all this talk of Plan B is rubbish... he said he was never on a team that had a well-defined Plan B.

Excuse me, I lived in flat land in the 80's and never saw anything quite that bad.
