Anyone watching this game this weekend... I hope the Dubs get through and dare I say set up a grand encounter with Kerry.. The Dubs have been doing well this year and I think they can beat Derry. Derry will never lie down though and the Dubs will have to play probably their best football this year to come through. I will go for a Dublin win. Its time for them to stand up to the big stage..and prove their many doubters wrong! Vaughan with an injury time 45 to seal the win.....haha!!

Some supposed sports journalist in the Star thinks that if Dublin beat Derry then they will beat Kerry. He offers no reason for such insightful writing. I'm assuming its because Derry rhymes with Kerry.

derry will give dublin a better game of it than laois did but ud expect the dubs to pull through. dublin will be happy at getting a sterner test aswell as going into a game against the big teams ud need afew hard games under our belt.

I dunno lads i think derry could put ot up to dublin. Meath took their full back line apart in the first and second games and with the likes of muldoon and bradley knocking around id give derry a good chance. Derry always have a good defence and with doherty at midfield they could give dublin their fill of it.

Agree with you AWB. Despite Derry not having a great record in Croke park I think they have a good chance against the Dubs. Dublin are not that great and all the pressure is on them. Although I must say that I have noticed that there seems to be less raimeis than usual written on the Dubs in the build-up to this game.
I wouldn't write off a close game especially if Derry can get off to a good start.

There is a hell of a difference between "putting it up to Dublin" or "giving Dublin their fill of it" ............... and................... actually winning the game. I too expect Derry to put it up to Dublin but .................. I expect Dublin to win by 5/6 points. I also expect Monaghan to put it up to Kerry and give Kerry their fill of it........................ but................. I expect Kerry to win

No Kerrygold?...surely not. Are you sure there wasn't a supplement or insert or something you missed? Nothing for what one journalist in last sundays papers described as the All-Ireland Champions in waiting? How could they or they just being cool?...in advance of saturation coverage over the weekend ...maybe just saving their energies for the eulogies and deification ceremonies so draining on dublin newspapers resources. As another journalist in one of last sundays papers remarked how 'Derry will provide tough opposition but surely not so tough as to deny Dublin players moments during the game to dream of their impending All-Ireland Final' (I think he used the word Final but it could have been canonisation, they're so similar). No mention of Monaghan or Kerry awaiting in a semi-final....maybe we've all been misled and Dublin don't need to play in a semi-final this year after their unfortunate 'incident' in last years...can't take risks like that again, what with all that dreaming to be done and all.
I hope there is plenty of space on the Derry dressing room wall for newspaper cuttings...they'll be plenty useful cuttings before throw-in.

Hope Aidan Mangan has the backbone for the Colloseum that will be Croke Park in saturday........... a lot of big calls have gone Dublins way in Croke Park so far this year ............... especially "square ball goals".

Dublin have played a lot of games in front of a full house in croker over the last two years that will have to stand to them. They beat Meath too, the team who put Tyrone out of it which also says something for them.

Paul Curran says in this evenings Herald that Monaghan may well do to Kerry what Meath did to Monaghan.
He strongly tips Dublin to go all the way this year. His basic point is that of the Big 3 ...... Armagh and Tyroen are gone and Kerry are an unknown quantity this year.

if dublin and god forbid kerry loose it would ask serious questions of the qualifier system as all the provencial champs would be knocked out before the semi's.even if just dublin loose there would still be sesious questions asked as to how winning ur provencial championship helps you in the long run to winning the ultimate prize.

even if just dublin loose there would still be sesious questions asked as to how winning ur provencial championship helps you in the long run to winning the ultimate prize. I suppose if they gave the provencial winners a home tie in the 1/4 final it would make it more of an incentive. While Killarney would be big enough to hold Kerry v Monaghan, would Sligo have held the crowd for a game v Cork (quite possibly), Omagh would have been too small for Tyrone v Meath I'd say and Parnell Park would definately have been big enough for Dublin v Derry cos we all know Dublin can never fill Parnell Park!

martin breheny made a good point in the paper recently where he said the four provencial finalists should play off to provide two semi finalists with the two beaten teams playing two qualifiers for the last two semi final spots.
it makes sence and would cut out the six week breaks while also giving provencial finalists a second chance if they lost their quarter final game v another provencial winner, means theres a back door for everyone till the semi final stage.
i suppose this year it would have been kerry v dublin, sligo v tyrone with the two losers playing two from cork, meath, monaghan and derry. It just means an extra round of qualifiers

Lads, yis are filling more space here with yer mad propoganda than any amount of newspapers, if yis all dislike the coverage so much, why have you got a whole thread with 200 posts about the Dubs? ;D I noticed several posts here all going on about the winners of Derry-Dublin playing Kerry What does that say about taking things for granted? And that's from knowledgeable Kerry fans, not the newspaper tat

Well, Kerry's record in the last few years in quarter finals would suggest that they are certs for the semis. But then again, they thought the same of Tyrone last week....

Underestimate Monaghan and we are screwed. Pat will make sure that this doesnt happen. We cant afford to be complacent after having 6 weeks off.

it seems tickets have been returned from the six counties competing in croker tomorrow, yep even dublin returned some, there still looking at 80000 people so there might be a few floating around tomorrow if anyone fancies taking a chance and heading in the direction of croker tomorrow for a look around.

I hope the Dubs prevail to-day but I have doubts. That Dub backline are nothing to write home about and thats not whats required for to day. Dublin 0-18 Derry 0-15.
Not the draw that I predicted but could quite easily have been methinks.

Take away vaughans long range frees and add in derrys missed goal chances and what do you get?

I thought it was a good first half with some lovely points scored by Derry in particular. Dublin relied heavily on frees and their points from play were usually taken in loads of space which I suppose reflects good movement by the forwards. If Derry took their points early in the second half they may well have won. I do agree with Brolly when he says that Derry didn't believe they could win this game today.
I still am not convinced by Dublin. They were slack enough in the full back line and were beaten overall around the middle. I wasn't impressed with their level of scoring from play and they didn't create enough clear goal scoring chances in my opinion. The Brogans were the pick of their forwards and it was quite obvious early on that the brother on the half forward line had the beating of his man - yet no change from the Derry sideline.
Dublin will improve on today's pereformance in my opinion but God help them if anything happens to Vaughan for the frees!
Mangan was only average enough today I thought. He stopped play when he shouldn't have a couple of times and also awarded a few dodgy frees. Derry will be kicking themselves as they had the beating of the Dubs.

It is amazing that in the first game against Meath........ Bernard Brogan and Mark Vaughan were not deemed good enough to start.
They got Dublin through today.
Dublin put together 2 patches were they score 5 or 6 points in a row and that was enough.
If Derry had taken their points rather than going for goals they would have put pressure on Dublin .
I couldnt understand the dublin substitutions......... they opened the door for Derry.
Vaughan has ice in his veins from frees and he is winning games for dublin that they would otherwise lose.
Bernard Brogan looks the real deal......... great awareness.
The game was very open and shapeless at times.......... Dublins constant movement causes that and it hard to defend against.
Ross McConnell is not a full back.
I felt that Muldoon should have gone closer to goal in the second half.......... they only played one high ball in the second half and Bradley nearly scored the equaliser from it.
Derry didnt expect to win as Colm o Rourke said afterwards.

Weren't a couple of them from 45s though? A lot of the frees were pretty soft too (so were some of the frees awarded to Derry in saying that).
