I just looked at the St Kildas website I see they have about 8 players in their rookie program at the moment with only 1 who got game time in 2009. So what could Tommy be attracted to? Even if he excells he could be 2 years before he gets any game time. Ok A rookie contract is €47,000 a year which is good money to be in full time training. But the life style is bascially hanging out in an apartment alone or almost alont every day.Tadgh Kennelly please make contact with Tommy. Tommy go back and do grad dip in education and there is a secondary school in kerry for you. Would it ever dawn on you that they actually might want to go and try someting different ?........I dont think the money will play a huge factor, its the challenge to see if they can actually make it out there, so what if they go for a year, if it doesn't work out then just come back ...

Great piece veteran, one of your many finest here.
Interesting how here now suddenly they owe nothing to club, county and Kerry people from many contributors, mention grants and better playing conditions and suddenly the clubs own them like prized assets hugely in debated to those who nourished them.Surely a contradiction of opinion?
I agree with your arguments and points veteran but I guess to the younger person that hasn't traveled the road of life they won't register. Its only now I'm coming to fully appreciate the term,"you can't put an old head on young shoulders" .
The reference to a life on Bondi Beach is amusing, surely dressed up in romantic notions of care freeness, fueled on cocktails of thought inherited from mindless celebration of the Celtic tiger,I'd suggest life isn't that simple anywhere. The only Bondi Beach a Kerry fooballer truly knows and identifies with is that of Croker on the 3rd Sunday in September,Kerry peoples mecca of contentment and identity. Those chosen to wear the green and gold have a responsibility and should think long and hard about turning their backs on it.
I won't wish them the best of luck if they go because such generosity of emotion to their possible departure isn't in me as I feel their leaving too much at home behind, something they will never achieve in Australia as articulated brilliantly by veteran.
If they go my Gaa world will be rocked to the core, great Kerry players on a great Kerry team not finding enough satisfaction in winning All-Ireland championships for Kerry people.
Surely the sheer joy in Glenbeigh over two days starting on Tuesday evening can't have been a mirage or was it?
Theres far more to be achieved in Kerry by staying put, hopefully the right people will get through to them.
Kerry footballers represent the Psyche of Kerry people everywhere,to be chosen and to be deemed good enough to wear that jersey with grace and aplomb while representing Kerry people on the national stage is a God given gift.
I hope they remain at home and fulfill whats lined out for them, caretakers of the green and gold adding to their father's great legacy in Kerry football as former guardians of the green and gold.
Or is it that maybe we are starting to lose the hearts and minds of the next generation?

So is seems Cork will be down a few players too. Although the guy I was sitting next to at the All _ Ireland told me that Denis Walsh was going to allow Cadogan become a dual player next year. that article doesn't particularly sound like Cork will be "down a few players" by comparison. Mentions only 2 players who would be concentrating on hurling and neither of those played a big role this year with Cussen in particular unlikely to be starting next year anyway. Although Cadogan might have at full-back.

Veteran and Kerrygold - hear hear - there is something cynical about all of this... to think of young GAA players being won away to so called bigger and better things and money... what has money done for anyone .. especially over the past so called 15 years of Celtic Tiger....
Now tradition, culture, love of County and playing year in year out in the Kerry Green and Gold - priceless....

As far as I know these two guys are studying construction. Just suppose they graduate from college next year and go looking for work. There is nothing for them in Ireland so they look further afield. They get offered a job in Australlia or Canada. What would you advise them to do in that situation? You would tell them to go and take the jobs they are qualified to do rather than stay in Ireland and draw the dole. Now tell me what is the difference in that situation and the one they are now facing?

Some posters on this thread would really want to get off their high horse on this issue. There is more to life than Kerry Football.
The suggestion that this is driven by money is ridiculous. Both have the capacity to make far more money in this country given their profile. The lads motivation here I'd imagine is a combination of (a) travelling bug (b) new challenge (c) a break from GAA and Ireland. The latter is an important point to consider. Tralee is a bit of a goldfish bowl for these lads, especially Tommy. All eyes have been on him since a very early age. Some people thrive on this attention and notoriety, and cope with it well. Kieran Donaghy being one example, but it might not be everyones cup of tea.
One way or the other, the chances are that neither of them will adapt sufficiently enough to make an impact out there. This is especially the case with Moran, whose elegant and lazy style (a la Maurice Fitz) is not suited to Aussie Rules. I expect to see him back in year, and Tommy maybe two.
I hope they have safe and enjoyable time.

The Kerry reps are due to play at home to Clonakilty on the 2nd sunday in November. The county final is fixed for now for the first sunday in november. The club final is on next sunday so the winners of that will have to wait around until the county final to see if they will represent Kerry. Thats if a club team gets to the county final. As it stands there will be at least 1 club team in the county semi final and there could be as many as 3. On paper though it looks like the county will be won by a divisional team..again!

Veteran.
You are a knowledgable man of Kerry football, and at all times, I bow to your view of the world of Kerry GAA.
If you'll permit, however, I would like to tackle the notion that players owe something to their club and county.
The player gives freely of their time to be a part of the club. They are loyal to the club from a young age and help build the success of the club due to their talents. They attend functions, kids camps, coaching sessions, fundraisers, you name it.
They inherit that which is almost on a par of fervent devotion with Holy Communion to us in the Kingdom - the Kerry jersey. So many times this summer alone we heard how players inherit the jersey, with the requirement that they protect it, represent it well and pass it onto the next player intact and with the storied history further embellished if at all possible.
In this instance David and Tommy have given so much to their club, and done all that is required of them and more in their time in the county jersey, keeping it intact for whomever so takes up this mantle next.
Now, how do people believe that they "owe the club and county" when they have given so much and achieved all that is expected of them in the amateur game?

Now, how do people believe that they "owe the club and county" when they have given so much and achieved all that is expected of them in the amateur game? Agreed. Jees lads, There is an awful lot more to life than kicking ball around for Kerry. Its a dream of any young lad growing up in Kerry to play for the county let alone win an All-Ireland. These two lads have done more than their fair share for the club and county. Its a huge world out there and you only get one shot at it and if the lads have an opportunity to explore it a little then they are more than entitled to it. Being brilliant at football has its drawbacks for players, they don't have the luxury that their mates have of taking a year off and going to America or Australia or South America or Asia travelling, they are expected by the public to be present and correct on Jan 1st for Kerry. The very same public who 5 or 6 months later could be calling for you to be sitting on the line cooling your heels. I never had the ability that these two lads have and when in college I passed up the opportunity to travel with my mates so I could play football with my club, Its my one major regret. These lads have a fantastic opportunity and I would certainly not hold a grudge against them for taking it. In these times of uncertainty who wouldn't grab the opportunity to live a dream, not on Bondi Beach (Sydney) but in St Kilda, earning money, putting food on the table. Paid for playing sport, If anyone here had the choice to give it a go they would. There is no guarantee in football, todays headline is tomorrows chip wrapper, the current panel has plenty players who have experienced a sudden fall from grace. If there is a contract on offer for the two boys its brings them job security (who wouldn't want that) and a gateway to a new world. They will always be welcomed back as was Tadhg. The two boys come from families steeped in tradition, they won't be short of advice and I'd support them whatever they decide.

Nixon: It's now or never for Walsh Ricky Nixon 06 October 2009
Ricky Nixon has told Tommy Walsh that this will be his last chance to join Aussie Rules club St. Kilda.
The controversial players' agent is adamant that if the Kerry All-Ireland winner does not sign for the club before next month's international rookie's deadline, he will be too old in 2010.
The 21-year-old and his Kerins O'Rahilly's club-mate David Moran are expected to fly out to Australia next month where lucrative rookie contracts worth EUR50,000 per year are reportedly on the table. The pair missed out on a potential move last year because of their involvement in the Kerry SFC final replay at the start of December, by which stage the AFL's recruitment deadline for the 2009 season had passed.
Nixon told the Irish Sun: "St. Kilda would have to sign Tommy this year because given his age it's going to be very difficult to sign him in the future.
"The reason he's always denied his interest in playing the AFL is because his father is very influential and doesn't want to upset the big names in Kerry circles.
"He told the Irish media that he was never going to sign for St. Kilda when he came out last year, but that was because he arrived after the draft deadline so they couldn't sign him anyway.
"There are no other AFL clubs in the frame to sign him at this stage. The problem for Irish players is that most of them start learning Australian Rules when they are a lot older than Aussie kids so they don't make it."

From this article, it appears it is more about Nixon proving he can get a marquee GAA name to go to Oz than anything else. Saying to Tommy it is now or never smells of panic.

From what I have been told it is a done deal that the two lads are going on 1st November. I hope the latest out-pourings of Nixon makes them change their minds.
50K isnt a lucrative contract in my mind to be going through what they have to go through on the other side of the world.
Tell Ricky to shove his deal lads

From watching the Oz Factor and reading the papers it seems Ricky Nixon is a total cowboy of an agent who just want to make a quick buck. He also doesn't seem to have a good reputation in Australia from what I read in another forum.

Speculation is mounting in AFL circles that Colm Begley may be the latest Irish player in Australia on his way home.
Begley is not expected to be retained by St Kilda in 2010, which will prompt a move back to Laois for the player who left in late 2005. Begley spent three years as a rookie with Brisbane Lions but was released last year.

I have thought a lot about this but scoobydoo you have put down more or less what I wanted to say.
( except for the bit about playing for your Club, I just support mine. )
As for Mr Nixon, he has about as much credibilty as any of those agents who proliferate in other sports in the UK and beyond. The last time I heard him on the radio in September he said his next signings would not be established inter county players but younger players who would be able to pick up the Aussie Rules game quicker than older players.

A bit off topic but did anybody see in the Kerryman today that an Australian Rules U16 team (from what I can make out its a national development side) played in Listowel against the locals on Monday night.

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz........... Won't be paying any attention to this one until it's resolved one way or another. One poster saying They're staying! The next screaming No!! They're going! Not going to offer an opinion either as it's pretty pointless on this occasion other than to say I'd like to see it resolved sooner rather than later.
