I would imagine that St Kilda were disappointed to lose Tommy given that they invested 2 years in him and courted him the year before that.
Still that's the nature of professional sport. I'm sure Tadhg's presence and influence at the Swans may have been a factor in the move.

I think Tommy was disappointed not to have played a single game for St Kilda. I know a lot of Aussies thought Tommy should have got at least some chance last year in particular. Tommy is a smart lad, he knows he needs to play next season or that is it for him.

St. kilda would not have let Tommy go if they thought he had a future in the game. I'd say there is more to this that meets the eye and the role Tadhg possibly might have played in the transfer.
Depending on your relationship with delution and reality, people can read what they see between the lines.
Hopefully it wont end up as a journey mans walk about in the outback of the aussie rules game and sense will prevail if it boils down to that.
I see Setanta is almost surplus to requirments in the aussie rules game at the moment.

Walsh moves to Swans 18 October 2011
St Kilda's Tommy Walsh Tommy Walsh will ply his trade with the Sydney Swans next year after securing a move from St. Kilda on the final day of the AFL trade window yesterday.
The 2009 All-Ireland winner with Kerry had been eager to move away from St. Kilda after they failed to give him an AFL start since joining them two years ago. He will now hope to make a similar impact with the Harbour City club as fellow Kerryman Tadhg Kennelly - who recently announced his AFL retirement - did over the past decade.
"Tom Walsh indicated to the club that he wanted to make the move to Sydney," Saints list manager Ameet Bains said.
"The club reluctantly engaged in discussions with the Sydney Swans on the last day of trade week when it was clear that Tommy wouldn't be returning to the Saints. The club, and no doubt Saints supporters, are disappointed but every effort was made to convince Tommy to stick around."
Sydney coach John Longmire said Walsh was a promising player who would give the Swans increased options.
"Tommy hasn't played a senior game yet but we think he's a fantastic key position prospect. He competes really well and he can play at either end of the ground," Longmire said.
Setanta Ó hAilpín, meanwhile, is facing an uncertain future in Aussie Rules after he failed in his bid to move away from Carlton for the second year in-a-row.

st kilda messed him about, breaking promise after promise of more oppurtunities for two years, he was right to walk.. in the end they fought to keep him but id say he had enough, and given how good the swans were to TK then it looks like a very good move by tommy.. all the best to him

On the train yesterday and picked up a copy of the Daily Mail that someone had left after them. Liam Hayes had an article in it on what he termed " the wasting of the great talent of a gaelic football star in Australia". I found it hard to disagree with what he wrote, a fact which worries me greatly on one level.
It was very weird to see him writing anything praising a Kerry footballer, past , present or future.
Apologies don't think the Mail do their Irish edition on line so can't get a link.

Any chance of a few bullet points outlining the main points in the article. Thanks.

Jeez. Sounds like an exam question KG. Wish I had taken notes now……
Here’s what I can remember.
-Makes clear that he personally has no time for Aussie rules as a sport. -Says that a lot of the younger players who have signed up to go to Auz were promising minors not major stars of GAA & most (with the exceptions of Tadhg, Jim Stynes and the late Sean Wight) didn’t really subsequently set the Auz world alight. -Whereas Tommy was the real deal at senior level when he left in 2009. -Tommy is a colossal loss to the Kerry team and will continue to be so into the future. -He quotes the statement from the Swans spokesman on their signing of Tommy and highlights what he feels is its banality / inanity and notes how little it really says about the person involved. -Overall gives the impression that he feels Tommy’s talents are being wasted at a time when he could be embarking on a great GAA career here.
Sorry, can’t recall a lot of the rest of the detail. If anyone else can, please add to this.
Personally, I would not for a moment deny or discourage a young person from trying something new in their life or travelling when the opportunity presents itself.
But the selfish Kerry football supporter in me would give anything to see Tommy back in a Kerry and KOR jersey someday.

This is make or break year for Tommy. The question is, would he be able to get back to where he was in terms of being a blue chip forward after being away from the game for three years. Everything about his game will have changed. Good stab at the question Glengael, I'll give you 7.5 out of 10, could do better with more attention to detail required, but the general geist of the information was well put across. Keep up the good work!

now in all fairness, most of the talk comes from here and the media and not the man himself. he seems genuinly interested in coming back again and i think he will for 3 or 4 years. would be a huge asset for us, and would add to the panel. now to get walsh back and we are laughing.

Put my post in the Australian rules tread after seeing the rte news this evening. In my humble opinion he seems to be genuinethis time. He'd hardly give an interview to rte if he was'nt, knowing it would be shown here. The way he was moving last Friday there's a few good years in Tadgh yet and id welcome him back with open arms. Put out the red carpet for him.

It would be great if he came back but I suspect that he won't. I reckon if you asked him two weeks ago he would have said no but over the past two weeks being surrounded by Gaelic footballers and particularly Donaghy who has probably chewed the ear off him has probably caused him to reassess. In the cold light of day, I reckon he will go where his long term future is and that is Australia.

Tadgh at home for a few years would be brilliant, would make a great midfield partner for Maher and release Sheehan to the 40

Kennelly ready to take the mic By John Fogarty Monday, November 07, 2011 TADHG KENNELLY is leaning towards beginning a career in the Australian media. The Listowel man hasn’t ruled out returning to play for Kerry again but is enamoured by the prospect of working behind the microphone Down Under. He plans to travel as well but a profession in the media floats his boat. "Yeah, that’s a plan. It seems like a pretty easy gig," joked Kennelly before commenting tongue-in-cheek, "You (journalists) all got a free trip out here to Australia. Having a few pints and what-not. "Stick a mic down someone’s throat and ask a few questions. And getting the big money. It sounds alright to me." Kennelly’s video diaries of this year’s series on the AFL website have gone down well. Giving that level of insight is something he wished he had done years ago. "That’s something of me that I’ve probably put to the background. "In a professional environment you’re told not to let media or people in and not let secrets out. "I wish, looking back, that I had been a bit more open in that way and let people into my life. "It’s what I live. I’m a very positive person, I love having the craic and a joke like most of these boys." Kennelly departs the series having defended it to the hilt but admits more needs to be done to support the concept in Australia. He reasoned: "The problem is here more than at home. At home Kerry people love to support a Kerryman playing for Ireland. Here I don’t think a Sydney Swans person is going to support a Swans player playing for Australia. That’s the difference between Ireland and Australia. That’s probably a PR thing and something that could be dealt with AFL-wise." He has no doubt Australia are smarting after the extent of this year’s record series defeat. A lot of their best Rules players were unavailable due to injury and many were dismayed with their country’s performances. "I know the Aussie players feel the same way I do about playing for my country. I got a text off Ryan O’Keefe after the game last week and he was very, very disappointed in the performance of the Australian players. He’s as passionate about it as I am." He added: "It’s a great thing for the Irish players to do because they get to live like professionals for three weeks — the can get a taste of it and they do pick up things and bring them back home. When you get to spend so much time with these lads and you get to play with them — these are lads that you might be knocking the heads off at home. You might have a perception of someone until you meet them." Read more: www.examiner.ie/sport/gaa/kennelly-ready-to-take-the-mic-173094.html#ixzz1d1YjyVfs
