Taken from Hogan Stand: ------------------------------- But McGarrity said he would quit the Mayo team if he was picked at full forward. “Put me in full forward I am not playing any more, I’m quitting,” he said.
“That’s the last resort. Bombing big high ball in to you to see what you can do with it --------------------------------
What a great attitude from what's clearly a team player? Good job the "last resort" has worked wonders for us this year.
I have to hope the quote was taken out of context because if that's one's attitude about playing for a team and using the tried and tested "catch & kick" tactic in football than I wouldn't think he has his head right for the final.

I would take that at a jibe at the tactics Kerry are adopting this year (and beat them with in 2004).

in one ear and out the other,
then again it might be a coded message.
anyone notice how well the mayo players have talked the talk in the media for the last 10 days so.

What i noticed about the Mayo interviews is that they seem to be trying to convince themselves that they are ready for Kerry. 'We are doing this differently, that differently'. We are 2 years older We are more of a team We are better trained
I remember all of these being said in 2004. It is like Kerry are this big pyscological block in front of them and they are convincing themselves that they are ready.
I hope it doesn't work but it probably is the best way to prepare against a team that has given you 2 hidings in a row.

for their sake i hope the kerry players arent as complacent as a lot of the fans posting on here. if they are they could be in for a shock. this mayo team is a lot better than that which rolled over to kerry in 2004.
on mayo's mentality - i think that moran and morrison have instilled a steely resolve and determination that wasnt there under maughan. teams that wernt as mentally strong and determined would have come a cropper in the first game against laois, the semi final against the dubs, and even the connacht final.

I don't think anyone on here is being complacent to be honest. We are aware of the threats that Mayo have, the problems that they can cause us and they've been discussed thoroughly. No one is taking anything for granted (well I hope not, same thing happened to Mayo in 04, they were full sure they had it, look what happened....). The only time we'll take it for granted is if Declan O' Sullivan mounts the steps to the Hogan Stand and lifts Sam over his head. Until then, I'm sure we'll all be a bag of nerves, stomachs full of butterflies, hearts doing ninety. Personally, I'll be praying continuously right up til the whistle goes. And I think a lot of others will too..

I'd call it more of a nervous confidence, gruaig. What county's fans are going to say "we'll lose" before an All-Ireland final.
It will be a very very tight game.

The talk from the Mayo camp does bear a very strong resemblance to talk of the previous years. Lets hope that's a good sign for Kerry.

The Mayo team and supporters are attempting to go from one extreme to another. In '97 especially and '04 they felt they only had to show up to collect Sam. Now they are convinced that attitude has cost them at least one All-Ireland hence the non-hype they are trying to portray. This may backfire on them as the AI may well pass them by.
They are unable to admit that they were beaten by a far superior team especially in '04, saying that on both occasions they did not perform. I watched the video of '04 again last night, Kerry were awesome with Gooch at his unparalleled best. No team would have lived with Kerry that day.

There's no comparison definitely with the 2004 final. Remember how Kerry turned around a trashing by Mayo in 1996 in just one year. So it's definitely possible. While no doubt Mayo are much better than 2004, Kerry are as well with Donaghy and O Se the main areas of improvement.

I have to agree that we were very good in 2004. There was a great hunger there. Hand on heart I'm not sure if the same intense hunger is there this year. But hunger alone does not win games. It does help however in a close game and if Mayo are in contention midway through the second half, hunger could drive them on to victory.
We will need to quell their confidence early on with some clinically taken scores and again at the start of the second half.

congrats to kerry on a great performance and win. must admit i was completely wrong about mayo. thought they would at least show some of the fight they showed against the dubs. i guess a green and red zebra never changes its stripes. that will set mayo back 5-6 years.
