I said after the All Ireland final that if the game plan continues to be David shooting the lights out then we are going nowhere fast. Its not only detrimental to the team but it is actually detrimental to David - placing ridiculous pressure on him, having him shoot when he should pass or recycle, seeing him blast the ball when he should place it and ensuring opposition defences and fans are on his case permanently as he tries to do it all himself. Its a primitive, ill conceived and tactically inept approach.
For the most part tonight, it was embarrassing for all who were Kerry in Croke park. Outthought, outfought and out manoeuvred, and with disappointing ease.
Our defence was porous and back pedalling with Small, Con and Kilkenny beating Casey, Foley and O'Sullivan repeatedly and with ease. Morley was caught out of position far too often and could not get from A to B quick enough. Kerry were 2nd to the ball and were 2nd best on physicality.
Midfield was a no show as Fento strutted his stuff but Joe did bag 1-1 in quick succession before being caught sleeping on the ball in front of his own goal after leading to a turnover point for Dublin. Duarmuid, like agsinst Mayo, was absolutely anonymous and we have not seen any of his trademark runs. A huge disappointment and making it harder for a newcomer like Joe, who didnt kick a ball in 2023, to settle in.
Burke was the pick of the half forward line, has the pace and power to breeak a tackle and can really cover the ground. Unlike Kerry, Dublin got bodies back quickly and Paudie and Dara were swallowed up hole in traffic. Seanie had a terrible miss in each half and also was guilty of lamping one hit and hope ball into David before half time - the irony of no. 14 lamping it into where the full forward ought to be stationed was not lost on me. David dropped a high ball early doors thst eoukd have seen him through on goal - it was a taste of what was to come. He blasted balls over the bar - one in either half - that should have been goaled. In the first half, he also went for goal when a handoass across goals was the shout. He also kicked one badly short and another bsdly wide by his standards. Another very frustrating personal performance.
Shane Ryan was put under huge pressure on kickouts and Dublin dominated their iwn and ours for long spells.
The subs made no impact for me, largely because Dublin have the pace and power to swat aside the likes of Murphy and Brosnan.
Kerry were bullied tonight and Dublin chests were out as a marker was firmly put down.

Examiner
Jack O’Connor admitted his team malfunctioned on Dublin’s kick-outs as well as their own in the first half of Saturday evening’s Division 1 Round 4 game.
The Kerry manager bemoaned how poor they were on restart at both ends and felt it was crucial to them trailing by nine points at half-time.
“It’s February, it’s not fatal but it will certainly make us go back to the drawing board and look at certain areas because we malfunctioned around the kick-outs. It’s only damaging if you don’t react properly to it and remedy it.
“We were just well off it in the first half. They were getting their kick-out off easy, they were going through us in the middle third and they were putting ball into good forwards and on a calm night like this on a good sod it’s very hard to mark that.
“Con Callaghan had a great night of course but it’s hard for defenders to mark that if you’re not slowing the ball down in the middle third and that was our issue in the first half.”
O’Connor made only one substitute at half-time when it appeared he could have made several more.
“Look, we brought on five subs, we brought on one at half-time. Sometimes you can just overreact and say putting on the subs is the answer but we malfunctioned as a team in the first half so by and large we had to give them all an opportunity to go out in the second half and try and remedy some of the issues we had.”
O’Connor revealed Tom O’Sullivan wasn’t risked after taking “a kick to the calf” in training last Wednesday.
Dublin manager Dessie Farrell expressed satisfaction with the display as well as O’Callaghan’s personal contribution.
“There were some good spells of football in there for sure and same old, same old – plenty to pick out in terms of stuff we need to do a bit better.
“It was a good performance, some very solid individual performances as well. Delighted again with some of the young lads and newer lads getting in the mix and doing very well. A few boys still to come back so it keeps things competitive which is important too. So overall very happy.
“Con got two (goals) from play, one from a penalty. He looked sharp, which was great. Knowing Con there will be areas of his own game that he will want to scrutinise and look over.
"But Con can be very happy overall with his performance.”

Love coming on here for the opinions of plenty fellas that know nothing, harking back to the game of hoofing it to one on one duels.. overreacting to everything both good and bad.. kerry aren't as far down the line as people think and why would they be? Dublin looked fitter, and a baptism of fire for some players will bring them on, players with tough first halfs improved markedly in 2nd.. ran out of steam but its the league, christ! Doubt If jack will have Morley roaming headlessly in championship.. this is a team we threw away an all ireland against last year! Calm Down clowns.. Could you back this up with facts, games, patterns of play, anything to give your post any degree of credibility.

Felt confident coming into the game,
Felt that Kerry for moral of nothing else would want to make an impression tonight.
Kerry near full strength against a Dublin team playing with lots of rockies.
League or not that was one of the worst displays I can recall.
We were beaten in every line and beaten comprehensively.
Hard to know what more you can say..
I'll never insult or have a go at a Kerry player.
A long sombre drive home.
Just a note to some new posters,
If you come on here and your first contribution Is to critise the team the away off with ye.

Typical league fixture - rollercoaster performances. Learnt a lot about some players tonight. Midfield is not developing in any way for us and when one line collapses the others are shown up badly. Same flaws being shown for fourth game by one prospect and he is probably running out of rope - sadly alternatives are scarce.
Put it behind us and learn from it - on to Tyrone at home next weekend where we need to respond.
The league is irrelevant ultimately and all that matters is we learn so when the crunch games come we know who can be relied on and what tactics work and what doesn't.
Disappointed to lose, doubly disappointed to lose to a rival like Dublin but if we have learnt from it and apply the learnings it will be acceptable.

I don't think tonight's game or result was that bad. The attitude was good. I can see why people thought it was not good enough but the energy good. I would have no problem with those exact 2 selections meeting again in July.

Read the comments and I don't think anyone is being unreasonable.
We came within 4 of them but it is a worry they pulled away again.
That we were psychologically humiliated suggests we didn't expect the charge and did Mayo taking them lure us into a false sense of security?
I think it is the best thing that could have happened to us, i.e. if they are that good it is just as well we know it and so we can do something about it. There will be a lot of ball kicked between here and the AI final so lets take a breather, it was probably a bit harder being there!
I called Omagh right but in that vein Tyrone will now be looking for southern blood and the turnaround will test us.
Burke showed fight and while he could be anything, would MF be too soon - maybe he's the solution, def worth a try, we're hardly spoilt for choices!

Just home.
Good god almighty, that was absolutely awful, we are going backwards and not many answers emerging to address our weaknesses.
Cillian Burke the only viable new addition to the team and we need more than that.

A good beating has us all looking a bit closer at everything and this is all so healthy not sure we can fix all but we can fix some If David s two over the bar shots from close range were goals then we may have had a tight game and came away happy
A few points
What is up with Seanie pushing his markers non stop and unprovoked it s a huge waste of energy He pushed Chrissy McCaigue in the chest all night He done the same tonight but when the Dubs reacted it rattled him solution forget that straight arm to the chest and save your energy for football David and Sean both lost their discipline and could have hurt players badly where is this petulance coming from ?is there a discipline problem that’s leading to wrong decision on the field Like pass instead of shoot and shoot instead of pass There was only one star on the field tonight and he wasn’t wearing green and gold
Why could we not counteract the Dublin kickout ?? Why were so many Dublin attackers getting a huge amount of space and running free What happened our defence where are all the man markers. Does Gavin White man mark ? Are our corner backs fast enough ?
I also don’t know where Kerry are training and if they are able to train properly on a proper dry fast pitch under lights ?

What age is Damien Bourke and has he played any underage games for Kerry?
Can't seem to place him at all.

No issues with the questioning of form, ability, players, management etc but (wait for it) I do think there is a bit of an overreaction at the same time.
Don't get me wrong. I expect a strongly worded report on Jack O'Connors desk by Monday morning with statistical analysis- video references and what not deploring many many facets of Kerry's play.. He won't need much statistical analysis mind you and I expect a huge reaction from management down to the last player on the squad. The review sessions this week should be brutal and searing!
An awakening of sorts. And surely this can only be a good thing?
I refuse to accept that Kerry have gone so far back after 1 (+ perhaps a couple of iffy) performance(s) since last Summer. New players have been introduced who have done relatively ok. We have a couple of lads back from injury too and overall Kerry is in a better position than this time last year on a lot of different levels.
Huge credit to Dublin. They played scintillating football at times and of course the main concern is have they moved too far ahead at this stage?
I have full confidence with tweaks and most importantly a huge kick up the you know what- for all involved that this will be lowest point of the season.
Positives- Kerry did fight back and not completely wilt when at one point it even looked so. No doubt management and players can see loads of areas to improve and now there are clear work-ons- Defence structure, midfield issues and the unusually poor/ineffective performances from the Clifford's (I hate writing this part).
I also think that yes Kerry does have the necessary players, system etc to put this behind them. A massive amount of work is needed but we've seen Jack's groups being written off before and they have bounced back.
The next few games being of an additional importance now too!

That was….rough. When DC isn’t shooting the lights out from the half-way line, we look distinctly ordinary. As someone said earlier, outthought, outfought and outmanoeuvred all over the pitch. Where to now…I hope Jack has recently ordered a new box of whiteboard markers. It’s only February and all is not lost but that was Dublin with players to come back. Players that have 9 medals. Whether they start or not, imagine the roar JMc would get with 20 to go. Unwise to focus on Dublin but hard not to this morning. Monumental improvement needed.

Last night was a reminder for how cruel the league can be, we all happy last week with 2 wins from 3, not so happy today with 2 from 4, the league table getting pretty bunched. While not trying to be too critical of any players my observations from last night. -our defensive system was non existent, especially in the first half, Dublin seemed to counter at ease. -our approach play offensively was quite poor, long balls to FF line constantly were turned over, the kick in hope strategy does not work, maybe it’s down to our lack of personal with ability to approach attacks more effectively, without turning over the ball, when not kicking long we carried the ball into tackle and were over turned, compare this to Dublin, fast counter or patient approach back and forth till opening came, long balls were measured usually when 2 on 2, ours kick in hope, with Dublin having numerical advantage. -the bench’s, O my, the gulf in quality last night was seismic, our squad is light weight, our bench can’t seem to change a game, merely only contain, not a lot of good if chasing games, this is one for management to resolve. -DC and PC were not at their best last night, croke park is unforgiving, but it just reiterates the fact if either struggle we can struggle as a team. -tactically the dubs destroyed us, I am not an expert but the seemed to dominate the middle third.
I have said it here a few times, we will march to croke park in July, but it will take 14 of last years starting 15, the supporting cast just don’t seem to have the impact the dubs have, for me this is the biggest worry for Kerry, last night we were missing a few and it told tellingly. It’s still feb, the league will be tight till the last day as it always does, the last relegation spot might becomea lottery, influenced by pending championship games. Still being Feb gives us plenty time to resolve some of our challenges, to the dubs last night, hats off, played some excellent football. Its not getting any easier any time soon, Canavans looking to have another raid again in Kerry, twice in a period of 3 weeks, Tyrone had a great second half last night, so Jack and co has some soul searching too do this week.

So how do you assess that.
Pretty sobering the morning after an hiding like that.
League or not that's not a place we want to be.
With the exception of Cillian Burke nobody played well.
The only person I've any sympathy for is Jason Foley because its impossible to mark a lad like Con on your own when you are fire fighting all over the pitch and when it's a near constant onslaught.
Midfield was non existent not helped but poor kickouts.
How many times can you kick the ball out to the best midfielder in the country and not realise you need to keep it away from him.
Half Forward line probably the best of a bad lot, Burke and Geaney worked hard Paidi was not his usual high energy buzzing around the pitch.
FF line was poor, need to take our chances against Dublin when you get them.
I'm still scratching my head how DC who could play as a forward for Munster was marked by Murchan the smallest of Dublin backs and yet we couldn't get anything off that.
Ultimately we lost to a Dublin team missing Mannion,Howard from the start, McCarthy, McCaffery, Cluxton, Fitzsimons.
Very sobering this morning and ultimately this will hang over the team like it or not as we won't have another big test until June.

Wow, as frustrating a match I have watched in a long time and glad I refrained from posting last night. Others should consider doing the same. Thinking more on this, I would make the following observations.
We struggled massively on our own and their kick out. In general, this has been an area we have performed very well on in the last two years. Our press and our ability to get a kick out away is generally seen as one of our strengths. I pur this down to a complete malfunction on the day and one that can be rectified on the training ground.
The pressure on Dublin coming out and working the ball up the field was non existant and gave Dublin a number of handy scores. This is more of a concern and a trend, Mayo, Derry last year and against Mayo Derry again this year, there have been significant spells in all those games where we have given up chances and scores too easily. Are we applying enough pressure in the middle third. Is Morley being exposed for some of his limitations? Again this can be worked on.
Also while we are very excited about Cillian Burke, he has a lot to learn about tracking back and tackling. Similar for Dylan Geaney. David as we know is a poor defender. Again while we all want Seanie in the full forward line, his tracking and tackling abilities may be needed at 11
On David, discussing this with a few friends in town last night, my concern here is that Dublin have developed a plan to limit his impact. They are playing him from the front for the most part and limiting his possession. There is some risk here in that this leaves them vulnerable to the ball over the top but they are backing their scramble defence to get back and cover. Also I thought there was a degree of laziness last night to David in that sometimes he was just standing behind his man with his hand in the air looking for the ball and far too often we launched it in. David also went for a few Hollywood efforts when what we need is simplicity. In general his discipline was very very poor and a few others need to look at themselves here also.
The bench also was poor and we collapsed in the last 10 minutes but would not blame the bench entirely for that. If I were giving management a small bit of credit, it’s that they started with Damien Bourke and also brought on Keith Evans and Sean O Brien when there were more experienced options available. People may say they are not giving lads more time but last night is an example of why you need a very strong core.
On a positive note, this is only the league and we have a game next weekend. Win that, we are safe and in good shape to kick on for the last two games.

A sobering defeat that very few of us saw coming against on paper a depleted Dublin team.A few observations the lack of pace in the team bar a few exceptions is killing us in the vast expanses of Croke Park.Down the centre we were destroyed last night from Dylan Geaney our midfield Morley at Centre back and especially Foley at full back who could not cope with Con.If the Cliffords don’t shoot the lights out we struggle for scores and we can’t keep playing non scoring forwards like Moynihan this is killing us.Our kick outs have gone so predictable and this weakness in Ryan’s game is killing us maybe time for a change here just to freshen things up and bring a bit of unpredictabllityto our kick out strategy. On a more positive note my fellow south Kerry man Graham did well and white was by far our best back and regained his all star form.Jack has to be brave now he has to pick proven scorers like Tony Brosnan who picked up great positions when he came on but failed to receive the final pass on a few occasions. The big worry is the lack of depth in the squad and if paul Murphy is our only option when we are down 10 points then we really are in trouble .Was jack a bit hasty with Burns I think so his pace in the wide open Croke park last night when the game opened up was made for him where evans lack of experience in that role was really shown up in the last 10 minutes Breen will come into the team when he returns from injury and hopefully we stay lucky with injuries because if we lose a few of our main men like David then Sam will most definitely not be returning to the kingdom. One final observation we have to now accept we have a mediocre midfield and defence so like last year v Derry we need to score big and outscore the opposition even last night our final score would min most games so going forward jack has to play at least 5 scoring forwards and try and outscore the opposition the day of playing non scoring forwards with no scoring threat is gone as like the all Ireland final last year Dublin ignored them and doubled up on Clifford this can’t continue if we are to retain Sam

Simple maths will tell you when you only have three forwards its a lot easier for six backs to mark you..we have to look at where we are..we have on two All Irelands in 15 years so we can't be going around saying it's only the league..we are looking for answers in nearly every line on the field..problem is we are using the same rationale trying to fix them for the last three years...if you look at our bench last night none of them are going to change a game for you. I wouldn't lay all the blame on the door of the management team cos I do think we have to look at the quality of the player the County is producing ...having said that if you give up the kick out and retreat to the 45 , the least you must do is turn the middle third into a war zone..let them earn their 100 metres of progress..there wasnt a glove laid on them.

I did nt know that but I know Dublin s biggest winning score against us is 12points and I was afraid that might be broken last night. They beat us by 12 in 2018 and 1998 (alas I was at both).1998 was the worst in Parnell park.We were beaten 18pts to 1-3.(18scores to 4)and we were All Ireland champs at the time). 2016 League Final they beat us 2-17 to 0-11, another 12 point defeat, but I don't think that game was done and dusted as quick as our game last night.

Stood a mile off him for one score in the second half off CK's keft boot. I really like Graham but he was beaten hands down kast night. - White did ok but hopelessly missed the flight of one ball in front of the Cusack leading to a score. He was not offering a lot of cover to the desperately exposed full back line in the first half either. - Burns left the camp of his own volition. Dublin bullied Kerry - bigger, stronger and faster in a number of one to one duels. Burns would not have redressed that balance on a wide open Croke park. - Tony Brosnan needs to do a lot more than take up positions. After the break in play following an injury, Shane Ryan pushed right up and blocked the Hogan side channel leaving only the Cusack side channel. It had to go there yet Tony's man got it with 5 yards yo spare. A micro moment in the gsme but a reflection of the macro in that instance.

One of the main differences I saw last night on kick outs the Dublin keeper had the ball ready to go the second the ball went dead head up looking for options Ryan is taking his time head down and when he looks up Dublin are set we need to do things quicker also badly need begley and maybe breen back in our defence huge holes to be filled in the team 5/6/8/9/11/15 all need addressing although I would persevere with Dylan geaney at 11 time to try stefan at 6/8 if he can stay fit

So , Jack thinks we malfunctioned with the Dublin kickouts and with our own. Unfortunately nothing new there. It happens repeatedly. Slow , slow at our end and then too often to a player dangerously close to an opponent . As for the other end , it seems to be against the religion of our forwards , perhaps beneath them , to put pressure on the opposition kickouts , allowing them to sail away unmolested most of the time. This is a recurring malady but surely a remediable one unlike say a midfield deficit where you just may be saddled with players who are inferior to the opposition.
Another unfortunate trait that bedevils us is that too often a player , after he delivers a pass, remains static or runs backwards to receive a return pass rather than harimg forward to an open space to receive that return pass in a more advantageous position or at least act as a decoy.. There is no added value in standing still or worse still retreating .
I have recently alluded to the fact that we failed to win a throw in our two recent matches.
I have highlighted these aspects of our play because correcting them should have little to do with the quality of our players but all to do with coaching. We do have a coach I presume. Simple things . Could be taught to schoolboys. Could pay dividends. Master those and then move on to more complicated matters applicable to bigger boys.
On the other hand , maybe our failings are due to the climate, heavy training etc and will be alright on the night! In other words , the streets of Dublin will be paved with gold come July. Prospecting for gold is a precarious pursuit particularly if you are not fully prepared and fully loaded.

The throw ins are a mess I’ve predicted someone is going to get hurt with the messing that’s going on 2 out of the 4 midfielders blocking and wrestling 2 trying to go for the ball refs need to clean it up our major problem there is lack of physical strength no Moran or Dara to dominate

2016 League Final they beat us 2-17 to 0-11, another 12 point defeat, but I don't think that game was done and dusted as quick as our game last night. Ohh I read that online and assumed it was accurate. Believe it or not 1998 Parnell park was worse than last night.

Maybe I'm naive but I just can't believe that last night was a true reflection the of what we have.
Whether it's down to hard training or whatever, I don't know. But I'd still be confident enough that if/when we play them with something serious on the table we'd give it a right go.
I know last night was somewhat embarrassing, and to go down the road of taking on Dublin unprepared is high risk and could backfire badly but I just think what happened on the field was not all we're really about.
