Fair article on Mayo basically saying that given the number of players who have retired...9.... plus injuries, Mayo have over achieved in the past two years rather that under achieving. It will be no surprise surely in Galway win. Surely Mayo have over-reached, not under-delivered www.irishexaminer.com/sport/gaa/arid-40856939.html

I hope RTÉ appreciate the gem they have discovered in Eamon Fitzmaurice, full of insightful comments. Contrast that with the dross the likes of Dessie Dolan spouts.

Mayo typically brave in defeat but incredibly blunt in middle of second half when they owned the ball.

Oisin McConville didn't even allege it on the RTÉ podcast, he stated it so clearly. 😂 Armagh disappointed me today, I expected more from them. Maybe that early league form isn't as impressive now. Donegal are so hit and miss. Mayo have no forward line. Same old story. 16 scores from 31 is pitiful. 7 wides were from close to the same spot. Even though they have a lot of injuries, they should have beaten Galway. Could still be our Q/F opposition.

The black card changed the momentum and helped Mayo draw level at half time.
Galway were a good bit better. Their defence was tigerish and organised, they have one of the best midfielders in the country and they have reasonable scoring ability upfront.
Lee Keegan inspired the fightback as usual....i think he should play as a forward given how poor Mayo are now.
That last attempt by Orme was shocking. A number of Mayo players that are around a few years are not improving. Loftus in particular. They have a 6 weeks wait now. Durcan may be back and maybe a few more that are badly needed.
Dublin will be asking themselves how did they lose 2021 semi final after watching Mayo today.

Well Mayo not being interested in the League final really paid off.
Same old Mayo no forwards.
Don't think they are going anywhere under Horan.

When needed the most Mayo's "main men" failed to show.... Galway played to their strengths and unlike Mayo their main players Walsh and Comer etc stepped up.

This narrative of mayo not being interested in the league final stuff will be put to bed now surely? They played at about the same level today as against us but Galway left them in it. Mayo have probably overachieved by getting to last 2 finals. With the injuries they have its hard to see them getting to one this year. Moving o donoghue out was foolhardy in my opinion. On the match in Ulster I take back what I said about Donegal they are dangerous with the big men they have around the middle Armagh (like Derry) are built up too much they don't have a goalie and their half forwards and to a lesser degree midfield are average enough. The qualifiers will be good though with armagh, mayo, 2 of derry /Tyrone/monaghan hard to pick 4 out of that lot . It's 6 weeks until mayo or armagh are out again it could be a 2 game champ for either mayo more than likely will be ok id guess unless they get monaghan away or something like that.

How the hell with a this stuff about the split season are a county left Waiting six weeks for the next game. Bloody stupid.
Fancied Galway after the League finals and they should have won by a lot more, think Roscommon will still pip them for Connacht.
Massive win for Donegal but still can't see them doing much this summer.
The League always throws up a team or two you think might be handy come crunch time but often never is. Galway were that during the mid 2000s

In 2023 there will hardly be 6 days between games....league, provincial championship, round robin, last 8 series....

Anytime Aidan O'Shea plays a full game, they are definitely going nowhere, as has been proved so often. They'll be forever hostages to celebrities.

Looking that way. Says a lot about how much other counties underachieved Still not many teams will want to meet them in a quarter final. Yes I agree 2020 they probably over achieved and got the luck v Dubs last year but they are resilient tbf. They came back strong in last 7 minutes. www.rte.ie/sport/gaa/2017/0917/905412-dublin-v-mayo/That was probably Dublin at their peak in 2017. Mayo have gone back a good bit from the exceptional team they were in 2017 as too many top players were replaced by average ones. Tipp hurlers were All Irelands champions 3 years ago. They too are only a shadow of that side due to losing great players.

Bad say for Kerrymen today. Donaghy beaten with Armagh. Billy Sheehan beaten with Laois and Tomás Ó Sé beaten with Offaly. Billy Sheehan the only real manager there - the other 2 boys learning their trade - would either of them have ambition to manage Kerry after the new Jack regime wins 3 in a row !!!!

Says a lot about how much other counties underachieved Yeah that's my point really us in 20 really and dublin just fell apart last year. Look I've nothing but respect for some of those mayo players but they are not the team of the last decade. As someone else pointed out they would be very tricky 1/4 opponents and could turn it on the day id just be shocked if they made it to a final this year they just don't have the players

I watched both of their games this weekend and wasn't impressed I thought it ok but then again I'm a biteen more familiar with Ulster stuff, there have been battles with the BBC and the result is that where both teams are Ulster the game is shown. I had Ballybofey on a par with proceedings in Castlebar and I think Tyrone will now be worried about Donegal - Armagh didn't do a whole pile wrong, Dgal were just too powerful though yes, Murphy, Patton and McHugh stood out. I regret I didn't get to Ballybofey but I could still sense the atmosphere, oozes of nostalgia and days of green 'n' gold taking on green 'n' gold. I suppose it is only fitting that we pay respect to young Kate Moran - that her boyfriend TJ Brennan is on the county panel has you thinking of all the things that might have been. RIP young spirited darling of everything that is good about the GAA and everything else you touched, and no doubt you helped out the footballers today.

I also think that Eamonn is excellent as co-commentator. I think the reason is that he tells it as it is - a ball going wide from 30 metres is a mistake and shouldn't happen and is not a case of "bad shot selection". He also very knowledgeably fills in a lot of what the tv viewer can't see and doesn't resort to stating the obvious from the monitor near him.
Overall the standard in all of yesterday's games was modest enough. Galway have probably the best potential of all of them but are struggling with their annual conundrum - how does a team with some class players blend in the required amount of cynical play to be successful.
Donegal are still Donegal and are still as dependent as ever on an ageing Murphy.
I don't think we saw the AI champions yesterday.

I watched both of their games this weekend and wasn't impressed BBC commentary was only so so. What they did very well was showing the camera angle from behind the goals for each kick out. That was excellent. A lot better than RTE who end up showing loads of crowd shots and endless replays for each restart. Although RTE did try to show more kick outs than last year from behind the goal in the Galway v Mayo game.

It helps that there are no add breaks but the actual in depth analysis of the game was brilliant. Having Peter the Great and Oisin McConville discussing matches at half/full time ensures you have actual quality analysis. Pat is too stat heavy but not explaining the problems. Fine to say 16/31 scores converted on a superficial level but he needs to explain where the shots were coming from, poor attack on the left wing. What should Mayo do to fix this/what is Galway doing well here? Stats are part of the job, integrating the stats into your analysis is more important. If I was playing against Mayo I'd be pushing them to the left wing as they found close to no joy attacking from that side. Cora is not good. One of the greatest footballers but not a good pundit. I think Noelle Healy is the best new pundit they found but I'm worried that she might be relegated down while Whelan returns to the championship pundit panel. Whelan is fine for the most part when his own county isn't involved. But that's almost true of any of them, you'd rather neutrals that don't cover for their own team. Colour commentators need to be given matches covered by Eamonn Fitzmaurice as a guide of the standard they need to look for. Yesterday was a masterclass and showed the gulf is quality compared with others on the books (Dolan). One thing is I'm thankful for is no Brolly on tv. The sooner the media circus around him goes the better.

I thought the BBC commentary was good. Those behind the goal cameras are a great addition. The display of High fielding by Donegal midfield was the winning of the game for them. Hard to believe we were watching the same Donegal who looked so out of their depth against Kerry and , even though there's a dependency on Murphy at times,I can see them having a good year. Galway were well worth their win over Mayo who, after the retirement of Oisin Mullen, were unable to counter their neighbor's drive.

So after the first real weekend of football championship 22 am I correct in saying two losers (Armagh and Mayo) are heading for the Sam Maguire qualifies and the other three losers (by virtue of being D3 or D4 after the completion of the 2022 league) are heading for the Tailteann Cup - Laois, Offaly and Carlow. The qualifiers will be a far tougher prospect this year by virtue of the exclusion of D3 & D4 sides.

My reading (no explanation anywhere) is provided none of the following reach a provincial final, I imagine it is first Limerick, then Louth, then Cork and then Clare would be moved to Tailteann for each Division 3/4 team that reaches their provincial final.
