I read in some of today's tabloids that Diarmuid will be back for the semi final if Dublin make it to that stage. My understanding is that the 12 weeks commences from the time the decision of his appeal is received from the Hearings committee which if he now accepts his ban will be 12 weeks from today. This would mean he is suspended until September 6th? It seems from some quarters today that last night's meeting was a HEARING, NOT AN APPEAL - as the hearing upheld the decision to impose the 12 week ban, the next step would be an APPEAL - the 12 week ban still applies from the date of the game!! Clear as mud! How it works is that the initial decision is a proposal, so last nights hearing is akin to an initial court hearing where the proposed ban is implemented after Dermot Connolly has the right to claim innocence in front of an independent group of judges. After last night we are into the appeals process.

I'd imagine that this classless rubbish will roll on for a while yet I'd imagine the longer that this process continues the closer to an All Ireland final it will be before Connelly will be available to train or play with Dublin. If appeal is upheld he cannot play or train with the panel. However the sentence will date from the day of the incident, which means it expires the night before a potential semi final. Doubtful if Dublin, or any other county, would be caught out by such a schoolboy error. A bit like bluepanther I too have mixed views on it. Part of me wants Connolly to suck it up, also hoping that Dublin go on to win it without him. On the other hand its highly unlikely any other player in Ireland would be subject to this level of scrutiny. Mostly media driven, with their own agenda's. History repeating itself! On 2015 semi final appeals, Dublin had to wait until the DRA hearing to get him off, I suspect the same will happen here. The gas thing is that I had it on good authority hat Dublin knew exactly how it was going to play out that time, ie; they would lose the first two appeals and succeed at DRA level. Interesting too that Murphy got his first yellow rescinded last night. And still no mention of him verbally abusing the linesman on his way off. Philly just got a one game suspension for verbally abusing an official during league final. Which was a mystery as most of still don't know when it happened. No wonder we love the GAA.

Some links of general interest I meant to post the bit about Cluxton and the speed of his kickouts before. gaelicstats.com/That's good analysis, they're super-slick to be fair. It must be said though, looking at the picture below Cluxton has a second ball half way out the square before the first ball is even gone dead. I doubt this is completely in keeping with the rules.
I had a quick scan through the rules and there is no explicit rule against it that I could find. Not saying it's not there, just had a quick look at the rules about the kickout and didn't see anything there. It definitely feels a bit dodgy having two balls on the pitch at the same time.

Ahhhh come on now! Really?? REALLY? Paul Galvin, you do remember him right? You seem to imply it was some sort of outrage that dublin "had to wait for the DRA appeal", the only outrage is that he had the ability to get off on a technicality. He punched a fella in the head for god's sake. He should be given an extended ban really for continually frivolously appealing. Great player but its in no way unjusitifed that he is scrutinised given the multitude of incidents he is involved in.

Who did he punch in the head Kot? You mean that time St Keegan had him in a choke hold on the ground and Connolly used his fist to try to break it. Oh ok.
I just want to say fair play to everyone here for the responses to my last very very long and boring post. Very fair, very honest, and insightful. Restored my faith in what a brilliant forum this is, and I've no problem with being seen as biased myself. My opinions are genuinely held. Keep up the great work lads and lasses.

In life there are some people who are constantly in the limelight - Connolly is the latest in a succession of such players and it is a curiosity how this comes about. They become major love/hate characters and of course the media latch onto them like leaches - afterall everybody follows the story and that sells sells sells (the ultimate objective of media). Their noteriety means they are singled out for both phisical and media attention at every twist and turn. When your player is the "chosen one" it seems terribly unfair and in Kerry we lived through the villification of Galvin and can empathise with (and enjoy) Connollys current position. It is a good lesson for up and coming players and one for them to be wary of as it is nigh impossible to shake off the attention once it comes your way.

Tyrone v Donegal up next. Two real contenders or local grudge match that won't make much difference at the (insert cliché warning here)'business end of the championship'.
Discuss.
Dermot? Anyone?

If it was last year I would have said closer to local grudge match than potential champs but have a sneaky feeling Donegal could be after improving a bit this year. Either team could beat one of of the big guns on a given day I'd say, but still hard to see either beating two of them in a row as they might need to if they have Sam ambitions.

It's an insult to everyone's intelligence to compare Keegan and Cooper's situations. If there were prizes for using simplistic sounddbite provocative comments to wind up responses which cannot possibly be simplistic..........
Keegan won POTY and is lauded up high and down low as the epitome of all that's great in football, pretty sure I mentioned this factor already. Cooper has not been treated that way in the media, nothing like it. Also Keegan is mentioned often because of Connolly, naturally. The context has been clear. We could all pick out individuals in every team etc etc. To take a discussion out of context.

It would be an interesting stat...how many lads has johnny cooper got carded. He clearly tweaks a lot of tails to get the reaction.
Lee Keegan is a great footballer who as a sideline persistently fouls marquee opponents. His elevation to POTY by his peers was a surprise but probably a sympathy vote for being unfairly being sent off in the final.
One is either for or against cynical stuff. Going on about opposition players while not commenting on the same stuff from players from ones own county could lead to charges of lacking in credibility not to mention hypocricy.

Speaking of Galvin, I watched him last month in 2nd round of Dublin Club championship. Thats all by way of information, and here's another bit...Anyone ever remember a club team fielding 3 POTYS in the same forward line on the same day??? Here's a great post from the Dublin supporters forum re the Connolly incident, I hope the poster doesn't mind me "borrowing" it! Going on about opposition players while not commenting on the same stuff from players from ones own county could lead to charges of lacking in credibility not to mention hypocricy. The reality is that we are all probably against the cynical stuff, but when your own county men are involved it becomes shades of grey rather than black and white. Ricey was loved by Tyrone fans, Philly is a folk hero in Dublin and so on. O'Mahony and Donaghy would start a row in an empty house, and where would we be without Kennelly and premeditated hits! What grates with Dublin is that the world and its mother knows that EVERY TIME Dublin play Mayo its Keegans job to stop DC by whatever means he likes, and officialdom turns a blind eye, unless DC reacts of course. Then its different and they have to do something. Usually the umpires and ref congregate behind one goal wondering will we give the 2 lads a yellow, or maybe just send off DC for striking even though Keegan was wooling the head off him at the time. But the ref knows "wooling the head" is not strictly a sending off offence so they can hide behind that one. The rest of Ireland doesn't really like to talk about this, because DC is the real villain in their eyes. Incredible the outcry last September when Keegan got a black, (which by the way if he had been sanctioned in the first game in 2015 semi would probably have cut out all the nonsense since then) yet when DC is sanctioned the narrative is "he had it coming". You can't have it both ways. The best analogy I can draw Mick, imagine Dubs fans coming on here nodding sagely that the bould Noel O'Leary is a fantastic lad great player really knows how to mark Galvin out of a game, lets give him player of the year this year! You get it now?

Have the Dublin County Board ever brought forward a motion to change a rule around how we punish players on the wind-up more harshly, or punishing players for retaliating more leniently or anything like that?
I could see the argument to a point, and think it would generate a lot of debate and probably some support.

My first post on the Connolly ban, Dermot is not a dirty player, he reacts like Galvin did and now he has a reputation and that's stuck. I don't know of any incident were there was not some form of provocation. Donegal 2011, Keegan and many others pulled his tale and got what the wanted. McMahon & Cooper are dirty players yet nothing is said about these boys. I can't see Connolly playing any football before a final and even at that it would be as a sub. He broke the rules however the ban is extreme in 12 weeks.

Going on about opposition players while not commenting on the same stuff from players from ones own county could lead to charges of lacking in credibility not to mention hypocricy. Keegan was only mentioned because of all the negative and cynical commentary about Connolly. It was a comparison of the two, and rightly so. Cooper is a separate issue, just as any other player on any team is. If you want to bring Cooper into the same discussion then bring in every back who commits some fouls or gets involved in controversial incidents. Or pick another player who everyone says is great and who won POTY and gets very little if any bad press. You also seem to have no issue with your speculation that a consistently cynical player won POTY "as a sympathy vote", (which you have shifted to 'sympathy for trial by media' from your previous 'vote against Connolly') which indicates that you believe in/agree with both cynical outcomes at the highest levels of the game, and that it's endemic amongst players. Yet you want to argue that I'm not being fair on cynicism? Instead of shifting it all around in such an entertaining way why not have a clear and honest debate about what players and teams you think are the most cynical? Do you actually believe that Cooper is worse than several players in top teams? T'would be easy to pick out particular incidents involving many players. Any of us can do that. We all know that players on all teams do dirty and cynical things. Statements of the obvious are only deflections from specific discussions

Don't think Dubs have difficulty admitting we have a couple who know the black arts. They are not lauded for it all over Ireland, unlike Keegan, who has carte blanche when marking Connolly. It's not clear from the footage what Cooper did, if anything, to provoke Murphy. But Murphy was nuts to do what he did knowing hes on a yellow. Then he abused the the linesman, called him a wanker actually, on his way off. Murphy appealed his first yellow, for an attempted punch to the ribs of Kilkenny. That is now rescinded and he's free to play the qualifiers.Good luck to the lad but that doesn't sound right.

Connolly as likely to be cynical as any of them.
He was just silly to lose his head against Carlow...like Galvin was against Clare in 2008. Carlow amd Clare!!
And skybluezone..... no matter what Spillane said on TSG, if the ref didnt put the incident into his report, the CCCC were powerless to act. It was different back in 2008/2009..... then the CCCC could unilaterally act on something highlighted by TSG irrespective of whether the incident was in the refs report on not. They changed the rules in the intervening period.
