Same thing happened Griffin on Brian Hurley in '14. Agree that Fitzmaurice seems to think there's some gain to be had by letting Griffin in particular get decorated in the league. Is there a chance that the decision to remedy such an obvious problem should sometimes be left in the hands of the players on the pitch? Kerry dont seem to be able to circle the wagons during periods when they are being dominated. Someone getting the ball, holding possession and shifting the point of the play can be a momentum shifter. At times like that you miss Declan, Galvin and Darragh. Picking out Mark Griffin is wide of the mark..no pun intended.

I've always thought that Griffin is better attacking the ball- i'e as a half back but I only have club football as evidence to back this up

This a big game for Kerry with the other tough games they have coming up. They need to pick up two points here at home. I would put Sheehan in goals at this stage. He can't do any worse than what we have. He could kick the frees and 45s . Shane Enright will be back so that's a plus. Stephen O'Brien should be back. I expect some changes to be made. The half forward line will be revamped. Darren o'Sullivan will be back. 1 Bryan Sheehan 2 Gavin Crowley 3 Mark Griffin 4 Shane Enright 5 Paul Murphy 6 Killian Young 7 Peter Crowley 8 David Moran 9 Jack Barry 10 Stephen O'Brien 11 Darren O'Sullivan 12 Adrian Spillane 13 Jack Savage 14 Paul Geaney 15 James O'Donoghue. 16 Dara O'Shea 17 Brendan O'Sullivan 18 Tadhg Morley 19 Donnacha Walsh 20 Denis Daly 21 Kieran Donaghy 22 Anthony Maher 23 Mark Reen 24 Nathan Breen 25 Kevin McCarthy 26 Cathay O'Luing.

JOD coped well with frees and 45s off the ground in 2015. The experiment was abandoned last year though.

But we need a free taker so badly and a penalty taker and someone to kick the ball out that's a lot of things we need For the past two seasons the Minors have won the AI with an outfield player in goals - Billy was converted into a keeper for his kicking ability and also his ability under the high ball. Nobody would question Sheehan for either of these skills. That said I would have serious doubts about his ability as a shot stopper and wonder if he has the agility at this stage of his career. Given what we have seen from our current keeper options it could be worth looking at in training at least just to test the theory.

GAA goalkeeping has very little to do with shot stopping at this stage- as pointed out high fielding and distribution are far more important.
If you were to look at the stats on goal chances, how they are created etc tehn I'm sure that this would ring through

Shot stopping doesn't seem to be part of the requirements any more. Cluxton is lauded far and wide as a great goal keeper but I don't think I have ever seen him pull of a full length diving save or any thing remotely like it.
Having said that I think the chances of Sheehan being in goals for the championship are almost nil. Based on current incumbents, under age and club candidates he is about 6th in line.
Speaking of saves some of the saves yesterday in the hurling were unbelievable.

I cant see us winning with Kelly or Kealy at this stage and neither of them in goals. They have been around for a while now and they both have played very poorly. Kelly's kickouts are dreadful. He cost us some valuable scores against Dublin last year. That should have been it . If there was a new manager this year I doubt he would be starting. Kealy has been around for years and still struggles under the high ball so it's time. Of course Fitzmaurice keeps them around waiting for some miracle to happen. This is one of the reasons I think he should have gone reasons like this. Keeping the same old faces around. Shane Ryan is our best option right now . He has the qualities to make it . Shane Murphy would be a solid back up. You're going nowhere without a solid keeper. Kerry always had a solid keeper when they were winning all irelands . Diarmuid Murphy Declan o keefe charlie nelligan . I think at this stage Sheehan is worth a league game at this stage. Agility is an issue but there is also kickouts the high ball one on one situations. Telling the backs where they should be . Kicking frees. I think he would be as good as the other two in those departments.

Do you think Bryan Sheehan would be happy to play in goals for Kerry nacrocaigh?
My impression is he would tell Eamonn 'no thank you I still have something to offer outfield' if he was asked.

There is only 1 outfield player potentially going in goal and that is Shane Ryan.

Sheehan should be nowhere near the team at this stage outfield. He's 32 . He didn't have much pace at 22 so he's well past it there. It's really sad a count like Kerry doesn't have a good young free taker . If I was Fitzmaurice I would tell him you are not going to make the panel outfield . I want to try you in goals. Sheehan shouldn't dictate anything . He goes in goals or he's off that simple. Of course that won't happen . Fitzmaurice sucks at that. Kerry have enough forwards in the county now coming up with Jack Savage and Conor Geaney probably making the championship panel. They definitely need a free taker but Sheehan in the forwards makes them weaker in my ipinion. He definitely can't play midfield. That's the only option for him in goals.

EF usually rotates the goalies during the NFL.Interestingly, he has given Brian Kelly two successive games. Is that significant.? Of the two , I would lean towards Brendan Kealy. I take the point about the the importance of kicks out in the modern game but making saves has not lost its importance. Witness the excellent save made by Rory O'Connor yesterday. Perhaps, the winning of the match.

You can expect Brendan Kealy will be between the posts for the next two league games.

Yeah probably. We'll probably end up with them too again for the championship. You know how that's going to go.

Sean O'Shea is as good a 19 year old I have seen for a while and feel that he has the physique & the football to play senior championship; this would solve a lot of problems as it would release Paul Murphy to his natural habitat in the half back line as well as providing us with a realistic free taker. It would also represent a sea change by management in going with a natural 11 , a guy who can pull the strings on the "40" . Maybe it's too much to wish for!

He was a brilliant minor . One if the best I've seen. I would like to see at u21 level also. One thing for sure Paul Murphy has to go back and stay wing back. We're just not good enough in the backs to keep him up front .

Probably would but I saw enough in him last year not just with the minors but also with Kenmare (district and club) to believe he is the real deal- would love to see senior management promote him to their ranks but the U-21s will come first, so hoping he will have a good campaign.

Are we not missing something regarding the restarts? A keeper needs a player to make themselves available to receive a quick kickout. The kickouts are a collective thing across the team and not just confined to the ingenuity of the keeper's skill in question alone.

Do people on here not rate Jack Savage as a free taker? I haven't seen his name mentioned on here. He's a very good place kicker off both left and right. Might not be an option from 45s but Shane Ryan or Shane Murphy if played could both sort this. Both very accurate kickers

Plus I don't think you can translate Sheehan's free kicking to kick outs. If you look at a keeper's kick out, it goes straight like an arrow, you can also see this when keepers go up to take frees/45's. This is to simplify things for players catching a kick out, they don't have as much difficulty in reading the trajectory of the ball. Sheehan's style in taking a free kick involves putting a huge amount of bend on the ball, so that if he's taking a free from the left side it has a better chance of going over the bar. He would have to change his kicking style at 31 years of age.

Would also feel he will have his work cut out for himself to make the Championship panel when everybody is available. Has potential but not there yet.

Has anybody a definitive list of lads that are in regularly with the senior panel from the past three years minor teams?

Also remember for guys to come in others must go out and there have only been two retirements. Here was out matchday 26 for the SF against Dublin last year.
The team, captained by Killian Young is as follows: 1. Brian Kelly Killarney Legion 2. Shane Enright Tarbert 3. Mark Griffin St Michaels/Foilmore 4. Killian Young (C) Renard 5. Brian Ó Beaglaoich An Ghaeltacht 6. Peter Crowley Laune Rangers 7. Tadhg Morley Templenoe 8. Kieran Donaghy Austin Stacks 9. David Moran Kerins O’Rahillys 10. Paul Murphy Rathmore 11. Colm Cooper Dr Crokes 12. Donnchadh Walsh Cromane 13. Stephen O’Brien Kenmare 14. Paul Geaney Dingle 15. James O’Donoghue Killarney Legion Fir Ionaid: 16. Brendan Kealy Kilcummin 17. Darran O’Sullivan Glenbeigh-Glencar 18. Bryan Sheehan St Marys 19. Barry John Keane Kerins O’Rahillys 20. Marc Ó Sé An Ghaeltacht 21. Jonathan Lyne Killarney Legion 22. Fionn Fitzgerald Dr Crokes 23. Anthony Maher Duagh 24. Aidan O’Mahony Rathmore 25. Michael Geaney Dingle 26. Johnny Buckley Dr Crokes
We are seeing a plethora of new faces - for them to stay and break into the match day 26 (never mind the actual team) some of the above will need to go. Tried in first two league games but not in SF26 - and I keep hearing other names of fellas supposedly in training with the seniors. Ronan Shanahan, Jack Barry, Adrian Spillane, Jack Savage, Conor Keane,Tom O’Sullivan, Conor Geaney Jason Foley, Barry O’Sullivan, Brendan O Sullivan

Whatever happens against Monaghan we must take Moran off the frees from long range. Its hurting both the confidence of the team and the player. Watching him against Mayo the last night in contrast to Jack Barry when he gets the ball he solos across the pitch or out towards the line. There is no drive in him from midfield at the minute. He is a very easy player to tie down in that respect.
Also he gives at least one or two outrageous crossfield balls away each game now. Maybe he feels has to make up for his free taking misses by playing some eye of the needle pass?
Goalkeeper as everyone has said on here before continues to be a problem issue. Its also an area that Fitzmaurice has shown little interest in adressing it aprt from mixing the two lads around a bit.

Tom O'Sullivan and Jason Foley for me to replace Marc and Aidan in the squad. Kelly and Kealy gone for Shane Ryan and Shane Murphy. Paul Murphy as a back so that leaves room for a forward. So Enright Griffin Young O'Beaglaoich Crowley Morley Murphy Foley Tom Sullivan and Fionn. That's 10 backs. Maher And Moran . Barry O'Sullivan and Jack Barry. Four Midfielders. I would get rid of Lyne and Mikey Geaney. So you would have Cooper O'Donoghue Paul Geaney Donnacha Buckley O'Brien Darren BJ Keane Savage and Conor Geaney. That's 10 forwards. 10 Backs. 10 Forwards. 4 Midfielders. 2 Keepers. Sheehan Daithi Casey Brendan O'Sullivan Gavin White and maybe Sean O'Shea maybe come in if you have injuries. .

Hard not to like all of that list - the keepers would need league time though, for rubber stamping. Unlikely to happen, but let's hope for one. An accurate distance free taker is the only glaring gap, to me, where Sheehan still gives a selection headache to consider.

I agree about a free taker . I have 8 new players to that 26. The sad reality is Fitzmaurice will probably have 24 of the 26 still there this year.
