The photos in the papers of the bulldozers in Pairc Ui Chaoimh got me thinking about the memories of titanic battles there.
Here are a few memories of mine.
I would love to hear a few from other posters.
Sean Walshs goal in the replay in 1976 when an umpire adjudged that the ball had crossed the line
Mikeys goal in the drawn game of 1987
The heat at the 2005 Munster Final

*hole glad to see it gone.
Too bad the new house will also be in the same spot although I can't see many other options.

The rain in 99 Munster Final, Aodán MacGearailt's 2 goals and being taken off.
Colin Corkery's and Johnny Crowley's majestic performances in 2001 Munster Final.
Stephen O' Brien's goal for Cork in 1994 that broke Kerry hearts.
The scalding heat of the 2005 Munster Final.

Was at the opening night in '76, Cork/Kilkenny on hurling & Kerry/Cork in football; went back up for the Munster final; paid cash into the terrace, up the steps but no hope of getting into terracing as the crowds were too large; back outside the ground, listened to the first half on a transistor, loads more like me by the way. At half time decided to make one last effort to get in- went to a turnstile in the covered stand and pleaded with the guy there to allow me in- he did! He cashed up and said follow me- down a dark tunnel, suddenly saw some light and followed on- arrived out on the pitch just before throw in for the 2nd half- got a good spot to sit down beside the Kerry dug out ! There were subs & supporters alike all along the side line- miracle nobody seriously injured; draw match, replay better policed, super win in extra time. The halcyon days of my youth!

Plenty good memories, last year probably the best in my lifetime. One bad memory that sticks out was how utterly cat we were in the 2009 Munster Semi. 1-17 to 0-12. Genuinely thought there was no way back for that team at that point.

Best moment for me was 1996. Had only 1 Munster title from previous 9 before then. 3 points at the end were celebrated like All Irelands.

Good riddance to crap, inaccessible kip Still going to be just as inaccessible. Presumably less crappy. Should have moved to Mallow or somewhere like that - accessible from everywhere; probably handier for half of Cork too. They'd surely get more games that way as well.

My first Munster final memory - Tadhg Murphy's late winner in 1983 denying us 9-in-a-row Munster titles which would be another record. Taking an absolute hosing in the 1990 Munster final with Colm O'Neill unmarkable. I remember Timmy Fleming being outstanding in a great Munster semi victory in 1992. I would agree that 1996 was definitely one of the highlight days. A typical PO inspired 'heart on sleeve' performance epitomised for me in that Killian Burns point. A league final win in 1997 on the way to a League/All-Ireland double. Lots of replays in the noughties! The replay in 2002 after the O'Se's father and PO's brother sadly died. Declan O'Sullivan's goal in 2005. A very poor performance in the replay in 2006 before reinventing ourselves through the back door and the arrival of Kieran Donaghy. Cork unsuccessfully trying the big full forward in '08 and but not before a Michael Cussen goal in the Munster final. A titanic battle in 2010, a Marc O'Se equaliser and Gally turning the game when he came on. And last year's master class from James O'Donoghue.

And of course Mossy Fitz's 0-10 in his first Munster final in 1988 and that famous picture of Bomber, PO, Ger Power and Ogie all sitting on the bench! The row between Johnny Mulvihill and Billy Morgan in '94 which continued in Billy's pub after! Billy face down on the turf, hands over his head behind the goals after Mikey's goal in 1987.

From my earliest memories what always struck me was the sheer drabness of the place.
I remember League matches in late 80's, maybe 88/89, wondering if the clouds of gloom over Kerry football would ever lift.
I remember the day they did.1996.No day in PUC since comes near to that joy.

yeah 1996 was the greatest day there for me too. "footballs coming home" being sung singing all the way up centre park road in the pissing rain... Kerry were back.

Great block by Liam Flaherty - no running through the centre then - gave away a free but the message delivered was way more important than that free.

someone mentioned 1994 as being the worst. I agree.
I think we were about 6 points up with 12 mins to go.
I think it was Colm Geaney got Kerrys goal
Stephen OBrien dragged Cork back into it and they blew Kerry out of it and won going away.
That was the day my then 5 year old looked at me quizzically and asked me why are we supporting Kerry since they never win!

Killian Burns's insurance point in the rain in 96 is the one that stands out for me above all. I was only 11 and it cemented my following of Kerry, with that win I had caught the bug. Great atmosphere at the games around that time, it would probably take another famine to recapture that feeling, so in the grand scheme of things we're probably better off.
Marc O'Se's last minute equalizer in the Munster Final Replay in 2010, stands out as well, a real heroic O'Se moment in the one forgettable year of that era. Such a shame there was so little in the ground that day, a super battle. I remember talking to Tommy Griffin, he was very disappointed with the Kerry following, I couldn't blame him. Poor attendances from us is defiantly something that sticks out about the stadium.
Hopefully this new stadium will entice more people to come down, maybe they can sort us out a lovely motorway as well.

Kerry support was small in numbers that day alright, but I don't think I've ever been part of a more vocal Kerry support than that day. It was a great win and I'll never forget Marc's equaliser.

It was fantastic, I was surrounded by a few of my Cork cousins so it was even sweeter! I made a mistake there as well it was a Munster semi-final replay and I think the day of the famous 'fish-hook' incident.

Worst day for me was 06, not because of the performance or the scoreline, but because of having to witness the Kerry captain getting booed by his own "supporters".

Pairc Ui Chaoimh remains the most dangerous ground I have been to, have had 3 or 4 scrapes there and still remember as a child panicking in a crush under the stand.
My first Munster final was 1983 but luckily I cant remember that and have scant enough memory of 85 too. I vividly remember still jumping around after Sheehy's goal in 87 and wondering how the hell a free was being given inside the 45 at the other end so fast.
1996 was the best for me. After 3 years in a row of just not being good enough, it was great to finally get over the line against Cork. It was also a great time to be a young lad on the terrace, it was the year of "Footballs Coming Home" and when it seemed (maybe through rose tinted glasses) that the terrace was full of guys in their late teens and early 20s who were willing to bring a bit of colour and noise to the occasion (remember this was before the mass replica jersey era). Closely followed by 2010, probably the best Kerry-Cork game I have seen. Marcs point and Donaghys goal into the city terrace where we were stationed stand out. Seeing a Kerry team going in as underdogs beat Cork by 12 points in 2014 was also fairly special.
1990 was the worst. 2002 didn't really matter in the circumstances. I think the 2006 thing was overblown and still maintain the ire was aimed at the manager but that's only my opinion and I don't wish to re-open that particular can of worms.

1994. 1999 and 2008 the worst in my memory. The weather compounding the result.
1996 still my favourite day there and the league win came soon after in 1997 (raining again mind you!)
I missed some of the replays there over the years as holidays were booked in advance but was there for 2006. God that was depressing. Little did we know what was around the corner.
I won't miss the old stadium. It was a kip. Great atmosphere but a dangerous kip nonetheless. Also a pity it's not actually moving. Hoor of a place to get to.

Maurice Fitz got Kerry's other goal that day. A game Kerry really should have won and pretty hard one to take. 1999 was close to the worst memory of PUC for me..a miserable day in every sense of the word. We were liked drowned rats on the city end terrace, Aodán Fitz scored 2 goals and was taken off by Paudie..just a bad day. No back door then either of course. 1996 was the best by far. Buck02 above has articulated well above, just why. The roar when Maurice put over the monster late free and when Killian Burns drove over his score were unreal.

Apologies, you're correct, he scored one that day and scored 2 in a league game there at some stage. Was a sickening one to lose alright.

In the early days of RTE showing live games outside of semi finals and finals the ludicrous arrangement that day was, the first half of the Connaught final was shown live followed by the second half of the Munster Final. It might be out there somewhere.

2001 Munster semi final was one of the good days. We were rocked by an early Joe Kavanagh, soccer style goal. However, we played some amazing football to get back into the game and win it well in the end. Johnny Crowley was superb that day, he terrorised the Cork defence and Ó Cinnéide had a stormer that day too. The following year wasn't so great. After getting a soaking in Killarney,a draw brought us to a replay in Cork. It was a sad evening for all of the Ó Sé family and we could never lift our game at all. Even Diarmuid the rock O Sullivan managed to get in on the scoring act that evening! 96 was a great day and Killian Burns' point to seal it in the rain was met with delerium from the Kerry supporters.
A question, as a child I remember Billy Morgan getting knocked out cold after a collision with the Bomber Liston in a munster final. I'm nearly sure it was PUC. What year I wonder?
