Recently I attended a funeral in Carnew, Co. Wicklow which geographically lies very close to the Wexford border. Afterwards, at a reception for mourners in a local hostelry I happened to be seated at table with the priest who officiated, the PP of Carnew, one Fr. Martin Casey. As is normal for such occasions the conversation quickly focused on sport and in particular, GAA. Very soon I realised I was in the presence of no ordinary man ! Here was a man who won 12 SH Finals with Buffers Alley and lost ,maybe another 6 finals.
He also played centre-field with Wexford against Cork in the All Ireland Finals of 1976 & 1977.
He also played minor hurling with Wexford in the All Ireland.
Of course, all this information I only discovered, later, when I researched his career on-line. This man was understated and humble in the extreme.
And wait for it, he was born in Causeway ! He was educated for the priesthood in St. Peters, Wexford and was quickly signed up as a young player with great talent. So, Kerry's loss was Wexford's gain !

I think Fr Martin's brother was on the Causeway four in a row team of the late 70s early 80s and Fr Martin is an uncle of present day Kerry hurler Thomas Casey
Cork had a famous hurler called John Quirke back in Jack Lynch's time. Was born in Milltown
