Was looking at how teams who get relegated from Division 1 get on in the championship the year they get relegated.
I had the idea that the teams relegated from Division 1 generally don't do much, but when you look at how they all get on, it's fairly grim stuff.
Bar 1 or 2 exceptions, the relegated teams have gone on to have completely woeful championships, especially in terms of getting to the business end of things in August.
The record of teams relegated from Division 1 in the last 6 years is as follows
Quarter finals - 3
Round 4 Qualifiers - 2
Round 3 Qualifiers - 1
Round 2 Qualifiers - 3
Round 1 Qualifiers - 3
2014

Kildare beat Louth (Div 3) lost to Meath (Div 2) Beat Down (Div 2) and Clare (Div 4 ) and lost to Monaghan (Div 2 )in the qualifiers.
Westmeath lost to Louth (Div 3). Lost to Cavan (Div 3) in the qualifiers.
2013

2011
Monaghan & Galway relegated
Monaghan lost to Tyrone (Div 1). Monaghan lost to Offaly (Div 3) in qualifiers
Galway lost to Mayo (Div 1). Galway lost to Meath (Div 2) in qualifiers.
2010
Derry & Tyrone relegated
Tyrone beat Antrim (Div 3), Down (Div 2) and Monaghan (Div 1) to win provincial title. Lost to Dublin (Div 1) in quarters.
Derry lost to Armagh (Div 2). Derry beat Carlow (Div 4) and Westmeath (Div 2) and lost to Kildare (Div 2) in qualifiers.
2009
Donegal &Westmeath relegated
Westmeath beat Wicklow (Div 4) and lost to Dublin (Div 1). Lost to Meath (Div 2) in qualifiers.
Donegal lost to Antrim (Div 4) Donegal beat Carlow (Div 4), Clare (Div 4), Derry (Div 1) and Galway (Div 1). Lost to Cork (Div 2) in qualifiers.
When you read the cumulative record of all these teams in the championship, who would have started the year as a top eight team, it's clear that any team relegated from Division 1 is very likely to have an awful year in the championship. It's hardly earth-shattering stuff but it does show the importance of avoiding relegation from Division 1 if a team wants to be any sort of serious championship contender.
