Lads perhaps Kieran Donaghy should be looked at for midfield.Regarding our kickout strategy we do need lads that can field a ball.If you look at Maher and Donaghy, both 6"5,its just a case of who is going to win us more ball in the middle third. To me it looks like Donaghy. Now Donaghy/Sheehan Sheehan/Moran also Johnny Buckley will be knocking around there for a place.Out of those 4 (Unless Maher is flying in training in the coming weeks) should we pick a midfield pairing and swap around if not going well ?

Don't think Donaghy was ever good enough to play Intercounty midfield.
I do, however, have a sneaking suspicion that it's no accident he didn't get a run out on Sunday. Would not at all be surprised if the goal here is for everyone to more or less forget about him and have him ready to spring from the bench for the last 15 minutes of - most likely - an All Ireland final to try and catch Dublin unawares.

We need mobile midfielders and I'm afraid Kieran didn't fit that description during his best days, let alone now.
It's a choice between Maher/Moran/Sheehan. Buckley ain't cut out for it either. He has been found wanting too many times in Croke Park. I don't say that to be harsh, but it's the truth.
On his day Maher is the best in the land, but he hasn't played to his potential in a couple of years. We need him back to his best. If Sheehan is fit (and it looks like he will be) then I think Eamon will likely go with him and Maher with Moran a good option from the bench. If O'Brien is fit then Buckley could be dropped. Michael Geaney did himself no harm the last day.

You could argue that only Sheehan and Walsh are certainties to start with the remaining positions to be contested hotly in training over the next while.

It will be a massive game of football and a huge challenge!

Anthony Maher should be moved into full forward. He has the ability to win his own ball, to take his own scores and he could make a major impact. He has the physical attributes to be a brilliant full forward and it would be a great option to have as Mayo and most other teams know that Kerry are not using the long ball option anymore. Conor Cox should also be brought back from America. He more than deserves his place on the panel. He could be brought off the bench as an impact sub. Kerry missed a number of frees last Sunday that Conor Cox would have scored with ease. Some of the criticism of Kerry players here is verging on abuse. We are in the All Ireland semi final. We have a county selected management team and they know what to do.They certainly dont wish to have some of their players vilified on their own public form. 1.Bend over backwards to bring some fella from North Kerry back from America. 2.Don't be in any way critical of any North Kerry player unless you want to be called an abuser/vilifier! To hell with the rest of the county, I'm all for North Kerry side to represent Kerry!!! lol

From Dont Foul
Really hard to see him maintaining such insanely high shooting form, but even when his form dips he's likely to be a serious threat.

Firstly im a Mayo man but this is the first time that i have ever backed Mayo to beat Kerry. Mayo will win and win handy 6+. Mayo in my opinion do not possess one top quality free scoring forward including Cillian O Connor who i feel is poor from play. Kerry have probably the best forward currently in Ireland (Gooch Injured) in O Donoghue who would probably come out best against any defender in Ireland but Mayo will double up on him. in saying that Kerry excluding him do not contribute as many scores as mayo from all over the field. (Donnacha Walsh is no Kerry Forward- very very poor) Mayo score from half backs, midfield, and forward line even if they lack major firepower. Mayo are physically stronger, more athletic and move the ball quicker and work harder than Kerry. Yes Kerry play lovely football especially quality kick passing, but lack the intensity and strength. Mayo will dominate around the middle, and attack from the half back creating overlaps all over, Kerry have no Power in Midfield and are not as athletic as Mayo Midfield. Kerry were given credit at half time against Galway, I felt it was a very poor display by them. The worst defensively ive ever seen, Aidan O Mahoney is a serious weakness. Galway walked through them easily and missed and incredible amount making poor decisions. Mayo are a very clever team and work the ball very well, taking the right options. Tactically James Horan is very poor but surely he will pull another player back to double team O Donoghue. He was poor tactically in last two finals and Mayo lost it on the line. I hear Fitzmaurice is top quality but Kerry im afraid Lack power (O Sheas for Mayo and Mayo half back line very physical etc) and workrate (Mayo forwards especially). In saying that Dublin if they get through Donegal will beat Mayo easily because they are similar to Mayo but even stronger, more athletic than mayo and have serious, powerful and match winning forwards, not to mention the bench.

The problem with Seamo's view that Maher should be dropped is this.... who faces down the guys who do the "bullying" to borrow a phrase from Darragh. And Darragh was some man to impose himself on opponents! Moran/Buckley/Sheehan? Don't think so.
Donaghy ..yes.
Has Maher been an ever present for 4 years at this stage. It seems that way to me but I could be wrong... either way he has been played a lot of football over the past fours years and its a pity that he didn't get a chance to recharge the batteries. Tomas O'Se, Colm, Darragh, Declan all went through fallow periods and benefitted from a break from football. Maher hasn't had that opportunity probably because of Morans injurys, Tommy Walshs departure, Scanlons early retirement and the dearth of options at midfield.
....and I respect your view seamo

From 2010 to this year including both, Kerry have played 25 championship games and 36 league games. Maher has played in 23 of the championship games and 31 out of 36 league games. He has played in 54 out of the last 61 Kerry games. In the championship he has missed the Tipp game in 2011 and Cavan game last year. He didnt play in 2 games in the league in 2010, none in 2011, 1 in 2012 and 2 in 2013. Bryan Sheehan is next in terms of the appearances in middle of the field over the same time period with 47 appearances - 22 championship and 25 league.

But I don't see what I have said wrong if I've said something wrong? I'm not calling for him to be dropped from the panel!!! lol Anything but that. He's played poorly all year, so he has been given time/fair warning, and coupled with that he has genuine competition for his place in the team. In any team sport he would be dropped to the bench to be replaced by the guy who has done all that is asked of him. So I'm saying drop Maher from the starting 15, and by all means bring him on with 20 minutes to go, being dropped could be just the motivation he needs to regain some form. And if he were to play up to his potential, then by all means he's back in contention for an AI final start if we should get there. It was the same story a few years back with Star, when he clearly wasn't up to it but Jack persisted with trying to accommodate him on the wing; and we're still waiting for that next AI to be won!! lol One of the things I have noticed during this debate is that many seem to be using the belief that training form is of huge importance. Training form is important, particularly if there is a big gap between matches, but training form is always secondary to match form, and the match form hasn't been adequate from Maher this season. Dropping players is nothing new, it's not that long ago Bernard Brogan was dropped, and look where he and Dublin are now. One of the reasons Dublin have such a bench is because there is a genuine belief that if you play well enough you'll get your chance, Moran has earned that.

There is no doubt that Mayo are a decent 'top tier' team. They've been knocking on the door regularly and have come close.. However, an average Cork team who've lost many prominent players through retirement etc. came to within a point of this Mayo team last Sunday. Fair enough, Mayo upped the gears and and went 7 points clear in 2nd half but twas nip and tuck before that and obviously for a finish they won but only just.. This Mayo team are decent but have their flaws/weaknesses. Kerry's intensity levels last Sunday were nowhere near the levels they were at below in the dungeon in Cork on Munster Final day in July.. ..

What does it say about the system James Horan has been putting in place all year- presumably with beating the Dubs in mind - if he can't trust it to get over Kerry?
Keith Higgins into the FB line, Vaughan into wing back and Barry Moran on for one of the corner backs is all that will change I reckon.

Imagine the state Anthony Maher would be in had he played games for his club on top of the Kerry games. Too many games = burnout/loss of form, players need to be managed better.

I dont subscribe to the whole burn out issue with Maher. Cooper had been on the go for years before he got injured. He had kerry and club nearly all year round and he still performed. The players are manged well enough at this level I think. I questioned Cian O'Neill earlier in the year but all the players seem to be as fit as fiddles and we are not fading at the end of games like we once used to.
Maher has just lost form, simple. I think our new game plan is built around having a 3 big men in the middle with the two midfielders and Buckley. Buckley was equally as inept as Maher on Sunday. He just looks too slow at this level and leaden legged. He played well in Cork but, either its a confidence thing in Croke park or the pitch is too big for him. One of Mayo's strengths is breaking with power and more especially pace from the half backline. If we send out a half forward line with both Buckley & Donnachadha in it I would be very worried. D Walsh has to start every time so that leaves the decision do we stick O'Brien on the wing with Donnachadha and Mikey Geaney or go for broke and start a trio of Maher, Moran and Sheehan with one of last two at centre forward?

I do not see Mayo giving Kerry a spare man in the backs either. They will place Higgins on JOD and continue to put huge pressure on Kerry bringing the ball out of defence. If Mayo are to beat Kerry that is what they need to do IMO. I thought they were terrific at that last Sunday. It must be stated that their FB line got a bit of runaround albeit by 2 class forwards.

Adequate cover for midfield has been an issue post 2009, cue the 2011 final. Kerry had no player to freshen up midfield for the last 10 minutes of that final. Maher has played a huge amount of time at number 8 since 2010. Freshness and exposure to game time might be a factor in his current form for Kerry.

On the basis of what I have seen I would agree with you but I don't have the full picture, not am I as apt at picking teams as , well Fitzie & Co. Maybe that i was uncharacteristically bried led you to believe I was being offensive and which I didn't intend. Nevertheless you think you are better placed to pick the team and that you also believe you are pretty balanced. I beg to differ, Anyway I have utmost faith in Fitzie & Co and they have never let us down; they have in fact been written off from the outset yet with a bit of luck we could have Sam from his first year, with a team that was also written off. It is only a question of time before he wins Sam for us and I think that we are very fortunate to have a combined management and playing team of such talent that is prepared to make such sacrifice for the jersey.

Where are you getting all these notions from? I haven't criticised "Fitzie & co". And this: "you made the false assumption that Fitzie & Co saw them in training while we saw them playing games." 1. It makes little sense what that means. 2. I didn't make that assumption. 3. "Fitzie & co" do see them in training! And we do see them playing games, so if I had said (which I didn't) then I would have been correct. What I did say, (well I've said alot! ) but what I think your alluding to is that match form is more important than training form, and given that Maher's match form has been so bad his training form is now irrelevant particularly given the match form of Moran and Sheehan. I'm really puzzled as to what you take offence to. I haven't said Eamon has been wrong to pick Maher all along, simply that he shouldn't pick him for the next game. If that much can't even be said, then maybe no-body here should be entitled to give their opinions on what the starting 15 should be. RIP Kerry GAA if that's the case!!! lol
