Spot on Mickmack...that is one thing that JO'D needs to work on. I felt the worst example was on about 45 minutes. Paul Geaney would surely have goaled had James slipped a pass to him.
I too was delighted for BJK. He should be brought on earlier the next day.
It is indeed a pity to see Marc Ó Sé struggle. Could a re-jig of the backs to allow him play as a wing-back reap dividends?

Just watching the re-run of Sunday Game live...
Can't believe I'm agreeing with Joe Brolly. He made good points about how ridiculous it is that Kerry v Mayo is being shunted off-Broadway to accommodate American Football. Michael Lyster just wanted to shut the discussion down unfortunately.

Regarding the Lee Keegan sending off I believe it was correct but can understand other peoples point of view. However as Kerry fans it suits us better if there is a policy of strictly enforcing the law. Skillful players must be protected. I have seen Gouch getting treatment for several minutes on a number of occasions in Croke Park and no one getting a card.
Did Keegan deliberately stand on Declan's finger(s) a minute or 2 before the red card incident?
I think James got a deliberate boot in the chest when he was down - it was very subtle.
O'Brien was definitely injured - 2 minutes before he came off he was in the centre about 30 metres out - a high ball came across to him from right wing - he prepared to jump for it but showed a reaction to pain and couldn't get off the ground.
Donaghy will definitely play a big part on Saturday especially in the tighter pitch, but the question is whether to start him or not. One way or the other he will be on after 20 minutes but by not starting him Mayo will be forced to change defencive system in mid stream.
The game was in the top 3 I've ever seen with 1977 & 2013. The value of the experience to the younger players is huge.

I would probably have scoffed at the idea of Donaghy starting this time last week, but we were on top when Mayo sat back in the first half before the red card, and Donaghy in there would force them into the same thing again.
The more I think of it the more I think I'd be happy to see it.

To be fair to Michael Lyster I think he's been shutting things down alot quicker this year. I think him more than anybody is a little fed up of Joe (and Pat's) antics, and the Cavanagh thing must have been a little embarassing for him last year. He's just more cautious now to not let the lads get ahead of themselves, if it were the hurling boys I have no doubt he would have let them run with it.

I wouldn't be so quick to start Star the next day. Why try to fix something that isn't broken? It may well be the case that Eamonn can make it work, but we'd be talking about a different attacking plan. Our attack has worked very well to date with the movement of the Kerry forwards being excellent. Plus if Paul Geaney simply brought anything like his average shooting game, he would have come away with 1-2!!! Geaney destroyed Gafferkey.
It isn't just about Star, the ball coming into him has to be right, and I'm sure we all still have the odd nightmare from time to time of aimless high ball after high ball being lumped in with no real thought, which we saw many's a time back in the 00's. Who else aside from Moran can link up with Star like that? Given O Brien and Darren's fitness concern's, is BJK a viable option?
Either way it's great to have Star back in form and giving Eamon some good headaches...and hopefully Horan some bad ones'!!!

Very disappointing to see Stephen O'Brien coming off so early. I assume it must have been an injury.. He started very brightly and I think if he was going good would have done wreck against Mayo yesterday. Watching it on the telly it seemed Declan got on very little ball, for those at the game - did he drop deep a lot like he did against Cork, or was it purely a case of not having a good day at the office and not getting on much ball? Mikey Geaney's substitution seemed a bit premature. From what I could see we completely faded when he was withdrawn, but from other posts on here it sounds like he was a free man even before the sending off. I think Bryan showed to still be quite injured. He did not seem to get very involved when introduced. I was pleasantly surprised by the "Star".. I had a feeling for the past couple years that the game plan was going away from him and that he would likely get less and less game time, it brought back flashes of yesteryear to see him rise on numerous occasions yesterday. I am not sure how to feel about the game as a whole though.. Positives: - Eamon and team have proved themselves to be expert tacticians in formulating a game plan. Dublin last year, Cork and Mayo this year, the plan they started with was spot on each time.. While some of the in-game decisions might be questioned, his ability to come up with a plan is second to none I think - KD, Kieran O'Leary, BJK all showed excellently yesterday - The hunger shown at the end was heartening. Great to see that type of fight back - Yesterday's game will stand no end to all of the 'novice' players, not alone this year but for the rest of their careers..
Negatives: - Having an injured Stephen O'Brien, Declan and Bryan Sheehan for the next day is a massive dent in our arsenal! - We seemed to get very confused with the extra man - it was very hard tell who the extra man was? - Our overall kickout strategy with the extra man was a big baffling.. We allowed Mayo execute short kickouts and for our own kickouts we did not see to make good use of the extra man. - Smaller field for the replay means a good deal less space for the inside forwards. - Marc O'Se had a poor afternoon.. I really hope it was just a particularly bad day, you'd hate for a warrior like him to finish out his days with poor performances.
All of that said, considering that most fancied Mayo, and Mayo themselves really fancied their chances, I think the lads acquitted themselves very well.

I don't feel we are getting enough credit in the media - Brolly called us a limited team. All the focus is on Mayos comeback with just a little bit of praise reserved for us. Everybody still seems convinced Mayo will brush us aside the next day. I've never seen a Kerry team given so little chance. Couldn't find anyone tipping us pre match. All the talk on RTE after was Mayo. Yes they were superb to come back from a man down but they still only drew

Kerry won something like 23 of their 26 kickouts and worn 18 turnovers. 1.16 is not a huge score from that.

A few thoughts and comments
- Michael Geaney had a good solid game. However with JOD double marked M Geaney was unmarked most of the first half. Kerry should have capitalised more on this. I blame his team mates for not getting the ball to him more so than blaming Michael. I wonder should the sideline have changed things a bit to get Stephen O'Brien into this free role as he is better at running at defences??
- For all the criticism of Marc I thought he still made a few crucial defensive plays
- thanks be to jaysus we didn't lose. The post mortem would not have been pretty. Up 5 points and a man extra!
- seems to be a great spirit in the Kerry camp. top marks to players and the management team who create this environment

Cillian O'Connor needs to be tied down, he is an excellent footballer, great temperament and very strong. Two footed, comfortable. Shane played well enough, but the man bagged 1-8. For all their drive 8 points from the rest of the team is not great. Dillon is the number two for the choke, got a couple of good uns yesterday. Cafferkey is the sore thumb, Paul wiped him in the air, just didn't have the shooting composure. Star emptied him too.
Moran is still a very dangerous cat, wily of beak and kicked and created about four scores. Marc was in no-mans land. Agree, anyone else he'd be gone and should have been replaced yesterday. The man is a legend, it is not beyond reason for him to turn that performance around.
Can we please not let Mayo take short kick outs? We are not as bulked at the back to break tackles coming out, but Mayo are, and their next two lines are the same, recipe for disaster. Albeit they were caking themselves in the last minute and we had momentum,we pushed up and Hennelly didn't know what to do.You don't allow guys like Boyle, Higgins and Vaughan take balls off the shoulder, just like winding a coil, gonna smack you in the gob fair hard.
O'Brien won't make it if it's the quad which kept him out of Galway game, so plan without. Declan might be better suited to Limerick, less space, less running, use his strength and kick passing. I think yesterday was more playing badly than being crocked. Hard to know with Sheehan.
Stop O'Connor, keep a lookout for wee Moran and squeeze him, doing both and playing solidly should win the game. Obviously not letting Aidan O'Shea do a Frankel impersonation would be helpful also.
One thing I think people don't realize is that Brian K doesn't have the view we had in the stand, so with noise dummy runs in front of him, the correct option was likely not very obvious. It's an area we need big improvement on all the same, he's very slow to recycle.
I think we learned more from the draw, need better kickout strategy, don't know how to deploy an extra man, turnover counts, complacency (there definitely was some), our set up was clearly deficient for Mayo's short kickouts, the Star is in form, Barry John looks good, Kieran O looks a viable option. We also know we need to improve our "weather the storm" guard, it was a long storm in second half, and we did fcuk all to distract Mayo.
What have Mayo learned? They have great heart and spirit and will in a big game against the odds. What else? Not much. O' Connor is the goto man, Dillon is going well and Moran a super sub. The strength and tackle breaking we all know about, plus fitness. What we also know is that maybe not as bad as our hemorrhaging, they cough up big scores in fade out periods, and although a man down, couldn't close the game out with a five point lead.
After taking a pummeling for over 20 minutes our lads found a way back. I would be confident if our injuries were not hampering but still think we will get there

Did Kieran Donaghy, BJ Keane or Kieran Leary come on as a blood sub? Thought that Red Card was harsh but any time you do something like that and leave the ref with a decision then you only have yourself to blame I suppose. David Morans passing in the first half was top notch. Still find it difficult when a team run straight at us. The extra game will be huge prep for which ever team gets through. Hopefully we come through on the right side.

Cillian was Mayo's go to man and scored 0-3 from play and was RTE man of the match. JOD scored 1-3 from play and had an off day. He wont have two off days again. I think Enright did a good job on O'Connor. He is one of the best inside forwards in the country.

Im sorry, I cannot agree with the exultations that this was a great game (up there with the greats). It was entertaining, dramatic but have people completely forgotten minutes 10 - 35 when both teams were dire. Giving the ball away needleesly, making basic errors in possession. In terms of great football, only 1 team played it in the second half. We were completely disjointed and my feeling with 10 minutes to go is that our weaknesses and limitations were greatly exposed and we had deservedly been found out by a better team.
We got out of jail, no mistake about it. Maher being left on for the whole game was baffling and serious considerations needs to be given to leaving him out for the replay and starting Sheehan & Moran. Johnny Buckley dropped alarmingly in the 2nd half and struggled again in the vastness of Croke Park. We kept taking the ball into the tackle in the second half when a pass was on against Mayo team renowned for their ability to turn over. Also, some of our shooting was very wayward.
Sorry to be down and everything but I fail to find any solace from a game where we were completely outplayed when leading by double scores against 14 men when one of those men is their most important players. We have another crack but a.) We shouldnt have needed one b.) In the end, we damn well didnt deserve it.

We all know there are elements of the media that take perverse pleasure from knocking Kerry - most of them have been on teams that Kerry beat and the chips on their shoulders about what might have been grows with each year. The dingbat Carr has been mentioned and his bias is bordering on being comedy at this stage - imagine the hurt he has to live with poor fellow. Only answer is to keep producing performances and winning matches. He who laughs last laughs longest and with 36 senior titles we have had the last laugh more than most.

This game will stand to Kerry more than Mayo I feel. For a handful it will have been the most intense game they will have played and can only do them a world of good.
Plenty to work on: Kickout Strategy Carrying it into contact coming out of defence Tactics for O'Connor and O'Shea in particular The foul count against us
It's a huge shame that Declan, Sheehan and O'Brien appear injured, 6 days will unlikely do much for them. But plenty to be optimistic about in my opinion. Maher being left on till the end is surely as a result of Brian not being fit enough to play there, it's hard to know though.
Buckley had a great game till he faded, he just needs to be hooked as soon as he starts to flag.
Don't think we will see Donaghy start, best to introduce him and force Mayo into a switch.
JOD had a super game imo considering the attention he got.
Would fancy us more for the replay than the first game.
Should Marc be moved to one of their lesser forwards?
Moran had a stormer, the man has skill to beat the band. The kickpass into Donaghy at the end was suberb, the swerve/curl on it really seems to suit the catcher.

The dust is settling on Act 1 and as it does so confidence rises ahead of Act 2. Our great men at HQ should have ordered the replay for Killarney as they could have been comfortably accommodated just beyond the confines of that hallowed place. Have the boys at HQ lost the plot with this act of insanity? Dublin and Donegal would not have been banished to the wilderness of McHale Park or some other provincial ground so why do Kerry and Mayo have to suffer such an ignominy? I have been to the renovated Gaelic Grounds and well...yeah; could be better and is not fit to host a match of this magnitude. It is often said that a replay draws a smaller crowd but in this instance the reverse may be true and we may witness a larger crowd than last weekend had the game been held in Croker. As it stands 44,500 is the stated capacity for Act 2 but I think in Croker the crowd would have been 60K. Alas that is now mere conjecture. Future planning will surely need to include having Croker free of non-GAA activity for the months of July, August and September. Could anybody envisage the authorities at Cheltenham saying that there is to be no racing possible on the Thursday of Gold Cup week this year due to a Monster truck meeting? Why does the GAA deem it necessary to short change its players and supporters?

A quote from an interview given by Simon Moroney, Munster Chief Executive;“The six-day turnaround is challenging,” he concedes in The Irish Examiner. “We began meetings on Monday morning, looking at the logistics which need to be put in place, the staff and personnel, the traffic plans, and so on". Somebody please tell me this is a joke. Is this the level of planning that the GAA implements? My apologies if I seem to be ranting but this is bordering on the contemptuous!

Kieran Shannon, former Sunday Tribune journalist, works as a sports psychologist with Mayo. He is from Cork and I wouldn't be surprised if he put Larry up to it.

After being at the match last Sunday id like to see us line up as follows for Saturday evening.
Peter Kelly
Shane Enright, Marc O'Se, Killian Young(to man mark o'connor)
Fionn Fitzgerald, Peter Crowley, Paul Murphy
David Moran, Anthony Maher
Johnny Buckley, Barry John Keane, Donnacha Walsh
James O'Donoghue, Kieran Donaghy, Paul Geaney
Think having star moving in and out of the FF line will give us options to change our style during the game and give us more than just feed it into James if Mayo do double mark him again.
Anyone agree?
