Lads,
There are far far too many ifs and buts in the following post to make it anyway accurate, ...but, for the sake of fun, and based on recent comments that the qualifiers should be scrapped, here's my view on how the last seven All-Irelands would have gone if the qualifiers had never been introduced...
1. I reckon Tyrone might have pulled it together enought in 2001 to capture their first All-Irl, and they would have still got the 2003 victory.
2. Armagh would have still won 2002, but Kerry would have done back to back All-Irls against them in 2004 and 2005 All-Irelands (a tint of green and gold maybe!).
3. Armagh however, would have risen one last time to defeat Mayo last year .
4. Kerry would still have come through this year.

tis hard to say really, but maybe we would have won the all ireland in 2005, had we not played tyrone. likewise, we may not have won last year either, so tis much of a muchness!

i'd imagine kerry would have refused to play the replayed munster final in '02 considering the circumstances of the time if the back door wasnt there that year
i think kerry would have won the first muster final in killarney '06 if the back door wasnt there.
personally i felt at the time kerry had a better chance of beating armagh than tyrone in '05.
it all balances out over time though.

These things even themselves out over time.
As I said already on another thread, the consensus at the time of the introduction of the qualifiers was that it would make tougher for kerry to win AI's given that the path to the semi final would now include at least one more game.
We have made every semi final this decade!

my gut feeling is that the back door has cost armagh footballers and waterford (hurlers) one if not two all irelands each

no way would i scrap the back door............. the scheduling of games needs to be sorted out though.
On the same day in august Kerry were rusty from no games and waterford were knackered...................................
i wouldnt allow defending champions a second chance though.

the back door was brought in purely to help the weaker counties and to give the middle road teams a second chance,all it has achieved is to give the big powers a second bite of the cherry and a second chance to recover.
apart from fermanagh '04 i cant think ofany other county that has prospered from the back door that is was designed to help.

i tink the qualifiers were the best thing to happen football in a long time! i kno it takes the edge off provincail championships but it gives weaker teams more hope and gives us more entertainment and some crackings matches down the years! every team can have a bad day and to throw away 5 or 6 months trainin cos of one bad hour isnt worth it!
