Was just thinking yesterday which player has the most All Ireland medals excluding players from Kerry?
I think Brian Mullins has 4 (74, 76, 77 & 83). There might be one or two more from Dublin with 4 medals. There also might be a few players from the early part of the last century. (Wexford 4 in a row team?) I cant think of any player with 5 medals.
Just goes to show what an achievment it would be for Darragh and Mike Frank to have 5 come Sunday enening.

Good question....Sean O neill of Down has 3. As has Martin o Connell of meath. In fact I d say a few of the Meath players would have 87,88 and 96 medals.
Not sure who has 4 or more

I often wondered about that myself I thought that someone from the early Dublin teams would surely have 5 medals seeing that Dublin won 11 from 1891 to 1908 including 5 times from 1897 to 1902 but I could only find one player with more than 3 wins - L. Kelly with 4. A few of the Wexford 4-in-a-row also have 4. Dublin won it in 1897 and 1898 with just one player that was on both teams so teams obviously changed a lot back then. I guess there's a slight possibility that someone won 5 medals from 2 different teams as there was a lot of switching between teams in that era.

it just shows how hard it is to win more than three, the good teams of the last 10 or 20 years have mostly ended up with two medals, both meath teams, galway, tyrone, down and a few teams with one medal, dublin, donegal, derry, armagh,
to talk about soft all-ireland victories in that climate is laughable at best, begrudery at worst!

In the 1800's it was the club teams that represented the county. That is why the team changed so much from 1897 to 1898 (clubs were allowed guests) - it also explains why Dublin won quite often in the early years of the GAA. Huge advantage in those days to be playing at home.
As an aside, my club was beaten in 1897, but we were short our two guests as they had played for Ireland against England to win the triple crown the day before and never turned up for the football final!!
Jack Lynch is the only player to win 6 All-Ireland medals in a row 5 hurling and one football.

But six of those are as a player with three as understudy to his first cousin, the great Ollie Walsh from Thomastown.

Going through it, should it be the case that the Dublin teams of the 1890's were indeed represented by their clubs, and that no Cavan man from the 1933 and 1935 team played in the Polo Grounds final and in '48 and '52, then Darragh O'Se and Mike Frank Russell should they win on Sunday, will achieve what only Kerry men have ever achieved in football - five senior All Ireland medals.

Ya can't think of anyone from other counties who'd have 5 or more All Ireland medals.Just goes to show what an achievemnent it would be for the two lads.Darragh to surpass Danno Keefe's record champioship appearance for Kerry also on Sunday.I wonder would he hang around for another 12 monthe to surpass O'Leary for most appearances of all time??Some going for a mid'fielder.

Five or more in football!! Wasn't doubting you stacks. The topic subject is All Ireland Medal Winners. Says nothing about if it is football or hurling. Was just stating that Jack Lynch won 6.

I love John Doyle's quote on this, something like - 'I won 8 All-Irelands with Tipp, but Christy Ring won 8 All-Irelands for Cork'.
