All
A sweet day to be in Croker yesterday to put one over the dubs.
All the lads did great however it would be remiss of us not to debate one or two of things that didnt go so well....
While Cluxtons antics off the ball yesterday (goading etc) were terrible I have to say th man's kick-outs are exceptional. THe amount of times his half-backs or one of the mid-fielders won clean ball due to an accurate pass from a kick-out to a man running hard was somehting to behold. It just made me think even more about somehting we have debated here before... Murph's inability to place ball to a colleague when the heat is on.. it showed up so much yesterday and was particularly felt when we were struggling to win ball in the second half yesterday. With the pace we have in our defence isnt it very strange we cannot try something more inventive when things are going against us in the middle of the field??
Murph is an imposing presence and a good shot stopper but the kick-outs left us down yesterday...
According to Sunday Game last night I think Dublin almost had double the possesion wins from kick-outs...talk about making life difficult for ourselves...

Baldy, might it have something to do with Darragh being injured rather than Cluxton being brilliant. Just a thought...

Possibly Owenabue but the majority of the kick-outs im talking about were ones that were deliberately directed away from teh centre of the field. So i dont think he would have been competing for them anyway...even if fully fit.

Excellent points baldy,if u look at the match yesterday, murph didnt have a thing to do besides his kick outs,at this level kick outs are the most important aspect of a keepers game, thats why cluxton is a class apart in my opinion,he can pick out a colleague without a bother whereas murphys seems to just belt it straight out the middle, think its something that should be really worked on.

I think the solution in the long term to this problem lies with Brendan Kealy from kilcummin.i know Murphy won't be dropped and with good reason because he is the most dependable goalie around but maybe kealy should be draffed into the senior squad instead of cremins because he can land a ball straight into a players hands evry time.he's very like cluxton in many ways and is a very good shot stopper too.

Yes Piggy... I am in no way suggesting Murphy get dropped for this, i just find it difficult to believe with a back room team of 11 and an abundance of nous in the county we cannot do something a little bit more clever than the big boot down the middle.

kick outs will be vital in the final against cork who are stong around the middle (we had 6 midfielders last day out against meath. Murphy & Kavanagh, all three half forwards are midfielders as well for their clubs and cussen too. gives us options for kick outs)

Strange for someone to be so accurate off the ground and so inaccurate off the hand.

He'll (Cluxton) still get an all star, no matter he does.

there is going to be seriously heavy traffic in the middle third of the pitch v cork in the all-ireland final.

Cluxton blew his All-Star yesterday with that dopey foray out the field and the 'pass' to Donaghy. If he does get one, it will be on reputation rather than performance, like Canavan in 05. I wonder if Peter the Great regrets robbing Brian McGuigan of his All-Star now that McGuigan will never play again. Most impressive keeper this year was Meath's Brendan Murphy.

Not sure if he blew the All Star but that foray was definetly not his finest point in this years Championship. He IMO is still the best keeper around at the moment.
The problem remains though that we do not mix the kickouts up enough.

One could argue he got it on reputation as well last year.... So I would not rule it out yet.

Cluxton got himself sent off against armagh in 2003 at a time when armagh had 14 men................. a criminally stupid thing to do. Then....... last sunday..........
there is more to being a goalie than shot stopping.............
i would take our goalie any day over cluxton

Murphy is some goalie alright, some of the saves he made this year were unreal.Cluxton is good but nobody who goads deserves an all star.

True about Cluxton goadin,no need to be gettin involved(especially in his position). Question for u piggy, can u actually remember Diarmuid murphy making a save in this years championship??Good sign of his backs cos i certainly dont remember him making a savve in the last 3 games. Brendan Murphy is the most deserving of it this year.

thats a bit like saying you cant win an allstar in goals unless your playing behind a brutal defense.

Our kick outs were one of the reasons (obviously not the major ones, but a reason nonetheless) we lost to Tyrone in 05. Its the main criticism I'd have of Murphy. The majority of kickouts werent aimed at Darragh against Monaghan, yet when Darragh came back on after being injured against Dublin, all our kickouts were aimed at Darragh and Whelan caught 2 if not 3 of them.

Its the only criticism i have of murphy,as a keeper theres no one as good as him in the country, but his kick outs do need workin on.Top class keeper though and irreplacable to us.Look at his record,4 years in goal and 4 AI Finals, some going.

Your right kerryeye, its actually the only criticism I'd have of him too. 6 national finals in 4 years after a few years warming the bench is just reward for Murphy.

You're like a scratched record this week, good tactic though tierney.. you won't talk that fella out of his dislike for dublins no. 1. from my point of view there is noone with a better kick out, and that is the most important weapon in a gaelic footballers arsenal these days. this, allied to some very good saves against Derry, means cluxton wouldnt be out of place with a bronze statue in city west next december.
