that's a pity,I'm a fan of the current one The Kerry County Board Crest was designed by Mary Johnston, Graphic Designer, based in Tralee, Co. Kerry, at the request of Anthony O'Keeffe, Secretary of the Kerry County Board for the Centenary Celebration of the founding of the GAA in Kerry in 1988. The aim of the crest is to portray all of the sports played under the umbrella of the GAA, combined with images of Kerry in a unique setting. The final submission was accepted by the Kerry County Board and comprised of: A twisted circular band, broken at the four points Top: Three gold crowns of Kerry the Kingdom Left: Footballer, in honour of Kerry's football All-Ireland titles Right: Hurler, in honour of Kerry's one hurling All-Ireland title Bottom: Handballer, in honour of Kerry's handball All-Ireland titles. All in gold silhouette on a green background. The dominant and central part of the crest comprises of The Wolfhound, The Harp and Round Tower; these stand for: The Round Tower - our heritage, the Tower of Rattoo. The Harp - our traditional music, with nine strings for the nine baronies of Kerry. The Wolfhound - the pride and heart of the people of Kerry since the time Cuchulainn travelled "The Kerry Way" to Tír na nÓg. The background consists of the Oakwoods of Killarney, the outline of Carrantouhill and an outline of Kerry's coastline with the word "Ciarraí" superimposed on the map, and last but not least four shamrock leaves at the bottom of the centre, which are also part of the Kerry Senior Championship medals. The shamrocks are to be found on the main gates to the Austin Stack Park, these gates were made in 1944 and hung on the main archway into the Austin Stack Park. The archway was demolished in the 1970's. www.kerrygaa.ie/old_website/info/crest.htmpossible additionsThe Sleeping Giant, Sceilig Mhichíl Saint Brendan The Gap of Dunloe the Lakes Diarmuid and Gráinne (I dont remember the story but I'm pretty sure someone here can tell me the Kerry connection-pretty sure its to do with West Kerry) Oisín (he fell off his horse in Bealachoisín on his return from Tír na nÓg) Staigue Fort The Beehive huts A horse nappy Blennerville windmill Tom Crean (that should make our east west kerry posters happy!!) Valentia island and the trans Atlantic cable fair play to the designer who can fit all of the above onto a crest!!!

Valentia island and the trans Atlantic cable fair play to the designer who can fit all of the above onto a crest!!! I enjoyed that!! A legend associated with Lough Annascaul is the story of the Giant, Cúchulainn and Scál ní Mhurnáin at Lough Annascaul. Scál, a woman who lived near the lake, was attacked by a giant and appealed to Cúchulainn for help. At first he and the giant exchanged insults. Insults gave way to boulders and the battle raged for a week. Eventually Cúchulainn was wounded, let out a roar of pain, hearing this, Scál believed her champion had been killed, she jumped into the lake and drowned. This simple story is believed to be of an early origin, perhaps desended from a myth of rivalry between two gods for the possession of a goddess. On the top of the mountain on which Cúchulainn stood there are three stone cairns called Leaba, Tigh and Uaigh Cúchulainn (the bed, house and grave of Cúchulainn). It is "claimed" that the last wolf killed in Ireland and Britain was killed in Annascaul.

.1. or a rivalry between two men for the possession of a "goddess" 2. I thought the last wolf in Ireland was killed in Carlow?? presumably many places are claiming the "last" wolf? 1. Not the first time and it certainly won't be the last Note they were fighting for the possession of the goddess, not the love, nor the hand, nor the marriage --- no; the possession! ;D 2. Yeah that's why I said "claimed". It's a good story so I use it --- can't prove it's untrue --- there would be 'some' foundation to the story. What that foundation is now don't ask me. Stupid copyright, I liked that crest.

I'm very surprised given how new the current crest is - it's understandable that the really old crests couldn't be copy righted.
The old Kerry crest was a castle and a harp on a black background I think, but they didn't wear them on the jersey.
Some good suggestions above - I would like it to be something meaningful and unique to Kerry. Some of the new ones are poor and too 'corporate' if you know what I mean. The Kilkenny one for example - take away the colours and it could be for any hurling county. The new Carlow one is pitiful.
Sceilig Mhichíl is probably my favourite suggestion of those above. Gallarus Oratory could be a contender too.

Or the new crest could reflect the Kerry of 2011: -the outline of a boarded up house, to signify the ghost estates that litter place like milltown/castlemaine; -a scatter of holiday homes, representing the carpeting of the county with the second homes of the Dublin/Cork elite; -A government jet, an homage to The O'Donoghue, TD and his generous use of public finances; -A peaky cap, the gombeenism of JHR and his propping up of the government of the (w)bankers; -and finally the letters CCCC in big golden letters.
Rant over!

I think the Beehive huts, the Skelligs and the Blennerville windmill, are images that I remember most about Kerry, when I've been there on holiday. But what about Fungi the dolphin? Or Galvin's skinny jeans?

What does the dog/wolfhound signify on the current crest? Where is the stone tower? Looks a bit like Glendalough.
I just noticed that Cork is on that map too (along with most of the bottom half of Ireland).

I'm sad to learn that the current crest is being replaced. I took out the jersey and studied it again while reading the explanation posted earlier.
There's plenty of beauty in East Kerry too if ye're looking for ideas for the new crest. A few lakes and mountains and such like. The beauty of the Kingdom is not confined to Iveragh or the West of the County, much and all as I love them both.

There would have to be picture of St Brendan the Navigator from Ardfert who sailed off to America when twant fashionable to do so. This inculated a spirit of adventure in the area which the hurlers of 1891 were inspired by, which in turn inspired the Countys footballers to try to win an All Ireland or two.
There are more All Ireland medals won in Ardfert this century that in any other parish in Ireland.
Isnt that mad

I thought that the current crest was designed by John Buckley from Ballyduff. At the time, circa 1985/86, the County Board had a competition so as to choose a crest and John's design was chosen hence the presence of Ratoo Tower in the design. I went to AnCo with John and he told me that he had designed it and as he was, and I hope still is, a fine artist I had no reason to doubt him. The current crest is pre-1988 as I have the 1987 jersey complete with crest. And not to be picky but Saint Brendan was born in Fenit Island!!!

Sad to here the crest is going, it has been the one we've worn as long as I have been conscious of Kerry football, but I guess maybe this could be a sign of a changing of the guards in era's. I have to say whatever happens in the future it will be always the one I'm most connected with. If we're talking landmarks for the new crest, Blennerville windmill would be a great shout. I can see it from my house
