Darren O'Sullivan has moved right up the subs to number 21. Will this give him a medal?? Does anyone know how many players get medals if we win? I know there was a rule change about it a few years ago and i think you have to play in the final or semi to get a medal. Not sure though................
Remember last yeat jack brought on guiney and ronan oconnor in the last few minutes.

For the first time in a while, Jack has announced a team that has no twists, turns, dramatic "what in the name of sweet Alphonsus is he doing there" or the like. And that in itself has me off kilter - usually Jack had something up his sleeve in announcing the team - what's he going to do Sunday. Is he going to have no tricks, just have the Kerry team play football and not worry about the opposition?
Anyway, team as expected. Still, disappointed for Eamon Fitzmaurice, but he's a mighty sub to have on the bench. Midfield is still an area that worries me, Daragh O'Se hasn't played well at all this year bar a few minutes against Limerick and a small spurt against Cork.
At this stage, all we can do is wait and see how they perform.
MickMacs comments yesterday on exactly what standard of team have Tyrone beaten this year is something that I've kept coming back to over the past two weeks and it's a point worth bearing in mind as the build up continues. Were Armagh actually that good this year (sorry BigMac) - they were lucky in the drawn Ulster game, wouldn't have gone next nor near the replay had Mickey Harte not introduced both Canavan and Mulligan at once thus completely slowing down the game - Cavan and Monaghan were proved for the weaker teams they are, Dublin gave them a right shock the first day in what was an exciting match but lacking any real talent (the Dublin half forward line barely existed that day), and folded under the weight of their own mediocrity the next day, Armagh in the semi final, though a tough encounter which started fast, slowed down quite considerably in the second half. Armagh are not a fast team and if Tyrone had been more consistant they should have beaten them the first day and that would have been that. The Down result was about the only one that had me thinking they were serious enough in Ulster.
We haven't played any great teams either this year, but we are alot fresher coming into the match and are ready for a battle.
The team is there now, so we'll just have to look at how they play. Will Gooch and Dara switch corners? Will Brosnan or Declan move to become a third midfielder with the other on the 40?
Interesting times beckon ladies and gentlemen.

The team was easily enough predicted and no surprises there.. Though I bet nobody on this forum will be able to predict where exactly players will start.. not just backs but forwards too! I wonder will PTG be starting for Tyrone. I have a feeling he wont be named in the starting 15 on Thursday but will actually start on Sunday.. In relation to just how good are Tyrone... I firmly believe that huge factors come in to play for a game like this.. There are unquantifiable things (intangible and difficult to describe). I think its a closeness or a mad focused drive for a particular cause. On this occasion a second All Ireland in 3 years. I dont know if Kerry have that. I'm sure we will say they do and have been preparing for a game like this for 2 years... but......We just havent seen them put to the pin of their collars yet so we just dont know. I seen it from Armagh in 2002 and i am sensing it from Tyrone too. There is something special about these teams that make them go further and play better than people predict.. Thats my concern. I guess thats pressure

There seems to be a few about the board that are attempting to minimise the performances of Tyrone over the year. That's perfectly understandable. If I were a Kerryman I'd be looking to do the same - Picking holes in the oppositions run to the final provides some crumbs of comfort in the runup to the big day.
In an attempt to give myself some peace of mind and a nights sleep without the aid of sleeping pills or 10 pints of Guiness, I've been doing the same myself. I'd be togging meself if I looked at this matchup - last years AI champs against a team with no midfield or full back line, dependant on a 34 year old to win a game for them.
However I attempt to console myself by looking at Kerry's run this year. A handy victory over Tipp in the first round was followed by a tough match with Limerick. A lucky enough goal gave you guys the breathing space to reach the Munster Final, where you failed to set the world on fire against a Cork team who have failed miserably in the Championship this past few years. Mayo haven't exactly set the world on fire this year either and their Final against Galway was a rank affair. Despite pulling up at the end you still conceeded 18 points. Some will add that Mayo were good enough to beat Tyrone in 04 but noone can rightly argue that championsip football was a prioroty for our lads that year. Cork then again showed their true worth in the semi final. The team that was hammered by Fermanagh the year previously was on the receiving end of yet another Croke Park embarrasment.
So I'll continue to assure myself that Kerry aren't as good as I think they are, that they have been untested for 2 years now, and that Tyrone can raise their game to a level of performance that they showed for spells against Armagh. And you Kerry boys can convince yourselves that Tyrone beat an average Armagh side. If we don't there won't be enough Guiness in Tyrone or Kerry to make sure grown men get enough sleep between now and the final.

you do that Phpearse, in fact what you are saying is what a lot of people across the country are saying.
Let them off, I am very confident that we will on Sunday, especially with the team that is picked. It's not cockiness as everyone outside Kerry calls it, it's just confidence and knowing that the team are so totally geared and psyched for this game and have the ability.
Bring it on, feck it's only Wednesday

My reading on the game is as follows. The tactics are going to be very interesting and will have a big bearing on the game.
1. Will tyrone drop a man in front of cooper? More than likely. 2 Will Kerry drop a half back in front of O'Neill and Mulligan assuming Mellon/ dooher and McGuigan travel out the field? More than Likely. 3. Who will kerry man mark? Probably Marc will pick up McGuigan and stick to him like glue as he pulls the strings. Seamus will be left as the 'loosest man'. 4. Midfield - breaking ball all over the place and both teams will try to pick up 60%+. 5. Tyrone could put Sean Cavanagh on Tomas Se to exploit him for kick outs like McGarrity did for Mayo this year - very effective. 6. I expect brosnan to play full forward and line out about 35 yards out and bomb in to support gooch and cinneide. 7. McMenemin will pick up gooch and surely mcmahon will be left inside to combat cinneide's aerial threa. 8. Mike Mc to pick up O'Neill and Tom Sullivan (more likely) or Mahoney to pick up Mulligan 9. Kerry to work the balls to the wings at every opportunity to counteract tyrone's bunching of midfield.
Based on all of this: has to be a low scoring game with the crowding Kerry to pick up just enough breaking ball to move in in fast and high to gooch and cinneide Kerry to just edge it by 2-3 points with Brosnan to get a goal and the roving Seamus Moynihan for Man Of the Match!!
Carlsburg don't do dream but if they did..............!!!!!!

dermot: 3/ How much longer do some of your players have left and are there new faces to come in and fill those positions/personalities ? no offence but ,when have kerry not been able to produce stars to replace the ones that are on the way out. a look back over the last few years will show you that im not wrong most notably gooch,o'mahony,galvin.2 out of three are allstar winners and theres a fair shout that 2 out of these three will win all stars again this season. there are plenty of boys on the subs bench that would walk onto the first 15 in most other counties.i'm not trying to be smart or big headed but i dont think there's any danger of a drought of talent in the kingdom. I see what you mean but I just didn't/don't know who you have coming through to replace the like of Moynihan, D O'Se, Hassett etc.... I suppose part of my point was that these guys will be very determined to win as it may be nearing their career ends - But then again that should lead to more motivation, rather than simply more pressure !

Good post Seamus. I reckon Tom Sullivan will pick up Mulligan with Aidan on Dooher (that'll give him something to dive about).
Moynihan for MOTM is a long shot. There's so many brilliant players on both sides that anyone could get it.
Based on consistency of the Kerry players I'd back Mike Mac or Gooch (Hassett as usual will give an 8 out of 10 performance but not a 10 out of 10 - the man is still a legend tho)

It would remind you of Jack O'Se's story in the Sunday Times last Sunday.

Mickmack- you said you were at the semi final between Armagh and Tyrone and that the better team lost, well.. you should have went to the 2 games in the Ulster Final, as Tyrone were the better team, especially in the second game where they were much better only to be shafted by that dick of a referee. In the end the better team are in the final, so justice has been served.

Daz - watch the replay of the Ulster final again. Tyrone's efforts began to fall apart when Mickey Harte brought on Mulligan and Canavan - he killed the momentum Tyrone had.

No,no ASA, that was a shrewd move by Mickey Harte...what happened afterwards was all the refs fault. Maybe Mickey'll do it again, we wouldn't want to discourage him now.....mickey knows best.

Canavan was sent off within a minute of coming on and soon after O Neill was sent off, and at this time Tyrone were still looking comfortable, so obviously Tyrone would lose momentum after that. I don't have to watch any replays because i was at the game.

So was I Daz and I still have no idea why he brought on both men when he did. The game was on a knife edge, things were getting niggly but Tyrone were keeping their calm and were well ahead. They had the momentum and were playing the ball far faster than Armagh. Mulligan and Canavan came on. Armagh seized the moment, mayhem ensued, Canavan's sent of, the game lost it's momentum in the space of about two minutes and that suited Armagh down to the ground.

If Canavan hadn't been sent off and we had won the game - everyone would have said "Another master stroke by Mickey Harte"....................... He brought Canavan & Mulligan on to try and drop Armagh heads... Finish the game off, as he knew only too well what happened in the previous drawn game when Tyrone were 4 up with 5 to go - Armagh got a draw - Mickey harte was simply trying to ensure that that didn't happen again ! In hindsight he shouldn't have put both on at the same time - especially at that particular edgy time -Though if we had won the game it would have been classed as a stroke of genius !

Well, there's the difference...if something works you're a genius and if it doesn't then you have failed. This particular move didn't work, so the 'if...'s don't mean anything at this stage.

Exactly - History is only kind to winners ! The difference is that in this case it didn't matter due to the back door !

Why wouldn't Tyrone bring on two forward in the calibre of Canavan and Mulligan? Yes Tyrone were looking comfortable before they came on and they brought them on to finish Armagh off. Armagh did not gain momentum after they came on.. It was after Canavan got sent off that things began to change... and especially when O Neill was sent off.. obviously Armagh would capitalise.

The more I think about it the more I feel Dara could be the winning of this game. If they concentrate on the Gooch he's smart enough to allow huge space inside for Dara and I reckon he could repeat last years final performance, especially on a back like McMahon. Gooch is smart enough to know that Tyrones main game plan will be to snuff him out and will sacrifice his own game to help us win. Also, if Tyrone do double man him it'll leave options for the likes of Tomas and Macr to come up the field to make an extra man when we're bursting forward (a goal for Galvin anyone?).

from waht i have heard the reason darren o sullivan is so far up the subs list is that he will be coming into the gme in the last 10 mins to run rings around the tired tyrone players. this tactic has the potential to win an all ireland for us but is he too weak. one belt from joe mcmahon or sean cavanagh or even dooher and he will never be seen again

So..u have to have a lower number as a sub to come on If a sub is wearing 25 he cant come on. Is that why they moved him up. I dont think so... The reason he was moved up the list is to get people talking. Nothing more i believe. I will be shocked to see him make an appearance on Sunday..

Well, the hour is nigh, the butterflies are in full flight. The rashers are in, the ham cooked for the sandwiches, the tae wet and we’re ready to go.
The 1997 final highlights have been watched, but we still missed Murhur's video clips on the site this year - they were halcyon days last Septmber around here.
I’d hoped to send my last post before the big day at some stage tomorrow but my boss decided on Tuesday to send me across the water for a meeting so I’m definitely coming to Dublin for the match now!
Where to go with this? I suppose I’ll have to go back to Fitzgerald Stadium at about 4.55pm on July 18th 2004. Kerry had just escaped from the Munster final replay v Limerick with a win, Tomas O’Se having saved the hay on the day. Coming out the back of the stand, I said to my mother and father that if Kerry won that year’s All Ireland, they would do two in a row. Jack and the lads are now one game away from that feat, and some feat it would be.
Pat Flanagan always said his initial conditioning work was a two year project, that you wouldn’t see the lads reach their peak unless they were able to keep going until late 2005. Such was the disrepair in which Jack and his selectors found the Kerry team that they saw it taking two years to really fulfil the ambition to match the talent available to them.
Sunday sees Kerry take the stage then for the second last Sunday in September in a row. Jack and Pats wishes are nearly fulfilled. And I believe they will do it.
This time last year, I predicted Mayo in a tight enough game, so you can make of this prediction what you will.
Some facts:
1) Kerry have yet to concede a goal. 2) Tyrone have an unsettled full back line, Kerry have an unsettled full forward line. 3) Tyrone have an unsettled midfield, Kerry have an underperforming midfield. 4) Fourteen Tyrone players have scored in the championship this year; fifteen Kerry players have achieved that feat. 5) Tyrone have the top scorer in the championship this year.
Points two and three will have a huge bearing on this game I think. Without knowing the Tyrone team, it’s hard to make a final call on it all. But how ball is broken around midfield, aligned with how the half back and half forward lines clean this ball will have a huge bearing. Martin McHugh said last night that he expects Kerry to start catching clean ball. Possibly so, but I expect McGinley / McMahon or Cavanagh or whoever in Tyrone to break the ball, that they will crowd midfield and try and work the ball forward. Tyrone beat Dublin and Armagh with somewhere in the region of 40% ball in midfield. If they can break even they’ll expect to beat Kerry up front.
But Kerry haven’t conceded a goal in a while – for a reason. Our full back and half back line are the best in the business, and between Aidan O’Mahony and Marc O’Se we have two players who can pose serious questions for Tyrone’s two marauding half forwards, Brian Dooher and Brian McGuigan if they mark them as expected. The role of the Kerry players will be to cut good ball going into Mulligan and O’Neill (I expect Canavan not to start despite what team news may say tonight). Expect Hassett and Galvin to work back towards the half back line quite a lot, acting as extra defenders if Tyrone send fast ball forward via Dooher or McGuigan. Seamus will mark his territory I suspect and if Cavanagh starts outside of midfield, it will be on the wing, where he’ll attempt to win kick outs from Tomas O’Se as per Mayo. He is my main Tyrone worry – he has a great burst of pace that I’m not sure Moynihan can handle and which may also be too much for Tomas but if Tomas plays it clever, he can make things very hard for Cavanagh and shut off that supply.
Kerry’s central forward spine of Declan O’Sullivan and Eoin Brosnan will play a vital role in getting very fast ball into Gooch and Dara O’Cinnaide. I think Declan will play towards midfield with Brosnan on the 40 but that is easily interchangeable. Declan is well able to run at men as we saw in Cork in July with his goal. I think Gooch and Dara will be criss-crossing all day, moving around looking for space. When a forward moves quickly it’s hard for a back to keep up while trying to cover his man from getting the ball as well. Micko said Gooch is unmarkable, he’s not far off it and I think he will set up a lot of ball the next day. If he gets an early score off his marker (Ryan may be on him but if the two Kerry lads criss-cross etc they could find themselves on the other man fairly quickly) he'll have a huge game. If Tyrone put an extra man on Gooch it’ll only mean more space for the other Kerry players, and they will exploit that fairly quickly.
Kerry have started quickly is almost all their games this year, league and championship, and sat back after that (Limerick being the biggest odd one out). I think Kerry will hit the ground at an even pace on Sunday as per last year, when it took us almost 25 minutes to really kick into gear. If we are within 2 points of Tyrone at halftime, I genuinely think we’re in with a great shout. We have an extra gear which we only ever seem to reach after Jacks talk at half time. I think we’ll see the same again on Sunday. Tyrone will be driven to start quickly as they did against Dublin and if we’re in touch at half time I think we will kick on strongly in the second half and dominate. I honestly believe Kerry have another gear to Tyrone and for all the battles Tyrone have had this year, Kerry’s fresh legs will tell. Kerry have the better players, and where people say Tyrone have a great team spirit which will be almost impossible to break, so too do Kerry, who have gone nearly two years unbeaten in championship football. You don’t do that without a smidgeon of spirit.
Kerry to overcome early pressures when they get into their rhythm towards the end of the first half and pull away in the first twenty minutes of the second half. Tyrone say their strongest period is the last ten minutes, something they’ve worked on all year. Kerry are as fit as them though and if ahead will want to drive it home and kill off the challenge.
I’m off next week so no abuse if I get it all wrong and Tyrone win by 8. I’m out the door – Come on the Kingdommmmmmmmm.
Tyrone 0-13 Kerry 1-17
