KERRY COUNTY SENIOR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP GROUP B ROUND 1
Dr Crokes 1-9
Dingle 0-11
Despite there being plenty of inter-county talent on show in this heavyweight clash, the football was decidedly of the club variety. That’s not to say, necessarily, that the quality was poor, far from it, just that it lacked the real cut and thrust of championship, and perhaps Kerry’s All-Ireland final hangover hasn’t quite rinsed itself fully out of the collective psyche.
That being so, two of the brighter men on show at Austin Stacks Park this evening where Paul Geaney and Micheal Burns, the former looking lively and sharp in kicking two points from play, converting two frees, and generally busying himself in the Dingle attack.
Burns, however, proved the match-winner of sorts for Dr Crokes, leading the attack off the ‘40’ kicking a point from play, converting a free, but most crucially dispatching the penalty that swung the contest Dr Crokes’ way in the 38th minute.
A pedestrian enough first half had since the Killarney club pinch at 0-5 to 0-4 lead at the break, but the game’s decisive moment came eight minutes in the second half. Billy Courtney shanked his free kick aimlessly into the air toward the Horan’s end goal but David Shaw tracked its flight the whole way, and when he gathered and turned to shoot he found Conor O’Sullivan’s tackle clumsy and impeding and, as it happens, illegal according to referee Sean Joy.
Burns stepped forward to take the penalty, coolly sliding it low and to his right, sending Gavin Ó Curnáin the wrong way. The goal kept the Crokes ahead by two, and as it their wont, they managed the game to a successful conclusion despite Dingle’s best efforts to reel them in.
Kerry manager Jack O’Connor was an interested spectator from the back of the stand, but if he was scouting for fresh talent for his 2024 campaign we’re not so sure if he went away with much to mull on. Indeed, the only thing we saw him scribbling down over the hour was a couple of signatures for a few enthusiastic young autograph hunters.
ADVERTISEMENT O’Connor didn’t have to be in Stack Park to appreciate the credentials of Burns, Paul Geaney, or Gavin White and Tom O’Sullivan, the latter two solid in their defending if unspectacular in the attacking department.
Quite what he will have made of Kerry panellists Barry O’Sullivan and Dylan Geaney on this showing is anyone’s guess, but one could see from this why the former didn’t quite break into Jack’s Championship plans after a solid National League with Kerry.
Dingle did take the lead here after six minutes through a Conor Geaney free after Barry Dan was fouled, but they could have had a goal after 14 seconds when Paul Geaney was set through on goal only for Shane Murphy to save smartly from his Kerry team mate.
The sides were level, 0-3 apiece, after the first quarter, Paul Geaney and Brian Devane hitting fine scores for Dingle, and Mikey Casey on target twice for Crokes.
Conor Geaney added another Dingle point in the second quarter with the evergreen Brian Looney and the impressive David Shaw replying for Crokes to give them that one-point lead at the break.
Dingle's Barry O'Sullivan takes on Charlie Keating of Dr. Crokes in their County Senior Club Championship Group B Round 1 game at Austin Stack Park Burns’ penalty goal saw the game lurch even further in Crokes favour in the third quarter, and when Mark O'Shea pointed in the 48th minute it moved Dr Crokes into a 1-8 to 0-7 lead, and the biggest margin between the team all game.
Dingle responded with Paul Geaney converting two frees in quick succession to halve the lead to two points, and Dr Crokes had a nervous final eight minutes when Evan Looney was dismissed on a black card.
ADVERTISEMENT Mikey Casey and White engineered a chance that Burns gratefully accepted with a confident point, and though Tom O'Sullivan and Conor Flannery found the target late on for Dingle it wasn’t enough.
Dr Crokes it is, then, who take the initiative in a group in which both of these teams would be fancied to qualify from anyway, but Dingle have a bit of work to do now… as has Jack O’Connor in unearthing that new generation he came looking for when it was the old dog for the hard road that were best on show.
DINGLE: Gavin Ó Curnáin, Conchúir Ó Flannúra 0-1, Conchúir Ó Súilleabháin, Tomás Ó Súilleabháin, Darragh Ó Súilleabháin, Tom Ó Súilleabháin 0-1, Micheal Ó Flannúra, Barra Ó Súilleabháin, Liam Ó Conchúir, Cathal Ó Bambaire, Micheal Ó Géibheannaigh, Brian Ó Dubháin 0-1, Conchúir Ó Géibheannaigh 0-3 (2f), Pól Ó Géibheannaigh 0-4 (2f), Dylan Ó Géibheannaigh 0-1.

COUNTY SENIOR CLUB FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP GROUP B, ROUND 1
Rathmore 1-20
Kerins O’Rahillys 0-13
The clash of the reigning All-Ireland Club Intermediate champions and the Munster Club Senior champions was always going to attract attention, with the former, Rathmore, back as a senior ranked club in Kerry after some 20 years out of the bracket, taking on a Kerins O’Rahillys side that went to an All-Ireland Club semi-final in January and then had to stave off the drop from Division One of the county league in a relegation play-off just a few weeks ago.
At the end of the hour at Fitzgerald Stadium it was the newcomers to this Senior Club Championship who prevailed, and did so with some ease, winning by 10 points over an O’Rahillys side that already have seen their grip loosen considerably on their title.
Cormac Coffey was a welcome addition to the O’Rahillys line-out, replacing Gearóid Dillane, but it was newly promoted Rathmore who made the better start. James Darmody clipped over a point from the off and Chrissy Spiers added a free a minute later.
O’Rahillys opened their account with a Tom Hoare free after Conor Hayes was fouled, and a good catch by David Moran saw Shane McElligott draw the sides level.
The Ryan brothers, Mark and Shane, were starting to dominate midfield for Rathmore and playing direct ball with the advantage of the stiff breeze, and that strategy began to pay dividends as Spiers doubled their tally with a free followed by a sumptuous point from play. James Darmody got his fist to a pass from Fionn Murphy but keeper Robert O’Connor was well positive to make the save.
Darmody did kick his second point after good work by Brendan O’Keeffe and Shane Ryan made a great turnover and promptly slotted over from long distance to make it 0-6 to 0-3.
ADVERTISEMENT O’Rahillys were under the cosh now but working hard, Barry John Keane feeding Ben Hanafin to cut the gap to two. Fionn Murphy swung over a good point with his left leg but Ben Hanafin replied after good work by Tommy Walsh, who looked dangerous any time O’Rahillys targeted him with high balls.
Rathmore upped the tempo with Brendan O’Keeffe taking a good score. Paul Murphy added another after a great run by Alan Dineen. Shane Ryan was very effective now in a roving role from full forward and kicked another point.
O’Rahillys did pull one back through a Darragh O’Connor free but things were about to take a turn for the worse for the Tralee side. Struggling in midfield, they were relying on short kick-outs and with Rathmore pushing up, Paul Murphy deftly picked a defender’s pocket and coolly rolled it under the hapless goalkeeper for an opportunistic goal. ]
Chrissy Spiers and Shane Ryan added points to pile on further misery on O’Rahillys before the break, as Rathmore led 1-12 to 0-6 at half time.
Brendan O’Keeffe opened the second half scoring to put ten points between the teams. Rahillys needed to dig deep at this stage but their response was testament to their character. Barry John Keane won a free converted by Tom Hoare and Diarmuid O’Sullivan neatly drilled a ’45’ over the bar.
Ciarán Collins, just off the bench for Rathmore, fired over a good score but Rahillys were gaining the upper hand as the weather took a turn for the worse. Diarmuid O’Sullivan slotted two more long kicks and Tommy Walsh set up Conor Hayes for a point from play before adding another himself. 1-14 to 0-12.
Paul Murphy, left, and Dan Murphy (4) of Rathmore in pursuit of Conor Hayes of Kerins O'Rahilly's during their Senior Club Championship Group B game in the Fitzgerald Stadium Paul Murphy raced up the field to slot over an important point and break O’Rahilly’s momentum. Barry John Keane had a good effort hit the post before Chrissy Spiers (f) and Dan Murphy picked off points at the other end.
ADVERTISEMENT Keane added another free for O’Rahillys but they needed goals at this stage with the clock beginning to wind down and a resilient Rathmore defence, led by Alan Dineen and Dan Murphy, managed to withstand the pressure.
The closest O’Rahillys came to a green flag was when Tom Hoare rose high to fist a Conor Hayes pass, but his effort slipped just barely the wrong side of the post. Rathmore had two more points from the outstanding Ryan brothers in midfield before Chrissy Spiers closed out a very impressive victory for them.
RATHMORE: Kenneth O’Keeffe, Timmy O’Doherty, Alan Dineen, Dan Murphy (0-1), Brendan O’Keeffe (0-2), Paul Murphy (1-2), Andrew Moynihan, Mark Ryan (0-1), Cathal Ryan (0-1), James Darmody (0-2), Brian Friel, Fionn Murphy (0-1), John Moynihan, Shane Ryan (0-3), Chrissy Spiers 0-6 (3f).
Subs: Ciaran Collins 0-1 for James Darmody (34), Cian Dineen for Andrew Moynihan (61).
KERINS O’RAHILLYS: Robert O’Connor, Cormac Coffey, Ross O’Callaghan, Darragh McElligott, Shane McElligott (0-1), Con Barrett, Ben Hanafin (0-1), David Moran, Diarmuid O’Sullivan 0-3 (2 ‘45’, 1f), Jake Foley, Barry John Keane 0-2 (1f), Tom Hoare 0-2 (2f), Darragh O’Connor 0-2 (2f), Tommy Walsh (0-1), Conor Hayes (0-1).
Subs: Gearóid Savage for Ben Hanafin (39), Shane Brosnan for Darragh O’Connor (42), Paudie Collins for Tommy Walsh (50), Sam Pituch for Ross O’Callaghan (58), Daniel Bowler for Shane McElligott (58)

KOR will go down this year - missing too many important players with most of the other important players getting a year further into their 30s

Strand road have the mental block over crokes have been them the past 5 times the sides have met and have the matchups for them and Tony Brosnan isn’t playing either which is a boost for KOR , I would expect next Saturday night between these sides to be a massive tight game
Think the winning and losing of the game is whether KOR forwards can create. A improvement on there scoring spread and if the crokes backs can prevent that they win

Rathmore look very strong in every line. Could they be the first club to win the intermediate and senior back to back.

Rathmore look very strong in every line. Could they be the first club to win the intermediate and senior back to back. They're a very well run club. Consistent stream of minors and U20/21s for years now. They're the only club to have at least one player starting senior championship games for Kerry since 1996. Which is a remarkable statistic, considering it's just a small village. Assuming Shane Ryan remains first choice GK, that'll be 30 years soon. Maybe their location close to Killarney, Cork and Limerick helps.

I don't think that's unusual. I'm sure most parishes would have more than one GAA club. It's just a religious designation. Gneeveguilla and Knocknagree are very much separate areas with their own hinterlands. They both do well for their size also. All 3 teams in Rathmore parish have reached AI club finals in last few years. Only Gneeveguilla fell at last hurdle. There must be something in the water of the Blackwater. "Because Dr. Casey was a pathologist, he noted that the Irish folk from the Sliabh Luachra area had a longer lifespan than average. He found a correlation between hard work and longevity and determined that "natives of an upland bog area in southern Ireland ... attained a world-record average life-span of 77 years." "Sliabh Luachra hit the headlines in the 1960s for reasons other than its music and culture. An eminent Irish-American Pathologist, Dr Albert E. Casey discovered that the people of Sliabh Luachra have a longer lifespan than any other in Ireland if not in the world and the men had a longer lifespan than the women. This was, despite having a diet that consisted of plenty milk, fat bacon, eggs and men folk drinking many pints of porter."

Big wins for Spa and Dr Crokes - Spa winning on a scoreline of 3-14 to 0-10 in Killeen with Dr Crokes winning at home on a final scoreline of 2-11 to KO'R 0-05.
Very poor first half in Lewis Road with half time score, 0-03 to 0-02 in favour of the Tralee side - some poor shooting, blanket defences with Crokes setting up at times with 12 behind the ball - lots of mishandling and mistakes throughout. Second half Crokes adopted a more positive approach and leading by 0-06 to 0-04 got a vital goal through sub Cian McMahon - Barry John had just earlier missed a glorious chance for KO'R when blasting wide with only the keeper to beat. From thereon there was only one team in it with Crokes running out easy winners - the game was poorly refereed and ended on a fractious note with 3 red cards being issued at the finish, two of which were straight reds, one to each side following a melee.

Last years final pairing could easily be this years relegation pairing - Rahilly's most likely there already as they need to beat Dingle by a cricket score to avoid being there and Templenoe play Na Gael to see which group A team is in the drop zone.

If KO’R beat Dingle, and that’s a big IF, and Rathmore beat Crokes, then KOR finish above Dingle on head to head - scoring difference only applies where there are 3 teams level on points.

Is there any way that somebody can post the results on every thread on a Sunday evening? It's very hard to get all the results in one place.

Was down aT the kenmare templenoe game kenmare won by a point but it was a bit of robbery. Templenoe started with a big wind and with killian Spillane in good form think he got 7 points 4 from play. Raced into a 5 point lead which should have been more as they missed a few and should've scored a goal aswell. Kenmare just stuck in there o shea kicked a few nice scores and they got a good goal just before half time to get back level at half time. The second half was poor enough fairly defensive and the wind had a big impact templenoe shaded second half again only to be caught at the end when a flowing move was finished off at the end by the kenmare wing back to give kenmare a one point victory at the very end ! Morley and o she's had a good battle hard to tell who shaded it , o brien outside of one great score was quiet enough cronin and dara crowley where good for kenmare at the back with Clifford at 11 and killian the pick for templenoe. Massive crowd as you would expect. Going on results so far I'd expect templenoe to shade it against na gaeil next time out and spa to beat kenmare.

I thought Na Gaeil would do better in the senior ranks
In their defence, injuries havent helped
Looking at their team sheets, they are rather dependent on the Abbeydorney hurlers who kick ball with them

A few injuries or one bad game can derail the season pretty quick rahillys case in point ran kilmacud fairly close last year in ai semi and could easily be intermediate next year be some turn up if rahillys and stacks are inter next year!

Good win by kenmare, played direct football, did not see it coming, but crokes did miss Gavin White, but hard to see past dingle, concern injury around barry Dan, and the kenmare MF are not bad, but still give dingle the nod.

Dingle, at last, seem to be fulfilling their potential - the Geaneys all playing top notch football. Add in , Tom O’Sullivan, Tom Leo etc and they are a formidable outfit. Crokes still depending on a lot of the old guard - Fionn Fitz, Payne , Looney with Casey, O’Leary all still involved - the loss of Gavin White & Tony Brosnan just a bridge too far. Dingle should have too much firepower for Kenmare though but the loss of Barry Dan could be a real blow.

Poor Oisín Mullen only granted "one or two" games.
