From The Irish Examiner website:
Tue, 22 Nov, 2022 - 20:47 Mortimer Murphy and Tony Leen KERRY's Fitzgerald Stadium in Killarney requires a "major refit and upgrading" that will cost in the region of €72m, County Board chairman Patrick O’Sullivan has told annual convention in Tralee.
O'Sullivan told delegates Tuesday night that they have met Taoiseach Micheál Martin, Sports Minister Jack Chambers and Minister for Education Norma Foley on financing the redevelopment, with further detailed plans to be presented in January.
“Fitzgerald Stadium is regarded as home to the Kerry footballers but now the stadium needs a major refit and upgrading to a multi-event centre to cater for the needs of the people of Kerry into the future," the chairman said. "It needs to be modern and comfortable for our spectators not only to enjoy big GAA games but also to attract some of the finest Irish and international entertainment acts to this county.”
Mr O'Sullivan also warned delegates and the Kerry players again of the dangers of social media. Referring to erroneous and slanderous claims made in the wake of this year's All-Ireland victory, he said: “During the team celebrations, harmless photos and videos were taken but certain remarks were made on social media regarding drugs. Behind those remarks were faceless people on fake accounts,” Mr O’Sullivan claimed.
“Daniel O’Connell, a Castleisland solicitor who has a degree in social media, will police the social media channels on our behalf and it is our intention to take action against anyone who attempts to bring our good name down,” he warned.
The chairman also took issue with GAA HQ on a couple of issues, not least its handling and lack of leadership on the minor age grade debate. “It was decided at Congress in February that there would be a Special Congress to decide on the age groups for minors, which also affects the Under 20 grade," the chairman explained. "Seven months later a document lands via email regarding one of the most important decisions for the association in years. Not having the Special Congress shows how far removed the leadership is when one of the most important decisions the Association has to make in years is down for decision.”
O’Sullivan went to say that Croke Park must take into account geographically remote counties and help them acquire hotel accommodation in Dublin during peak holiday months in June and July. "Croke Park is where every team wants to play whether that be club or county. This year our senior hurlers and footballers had that honour. But with that comes major problems for us as a Board due to the lack of availability of hotels and spiralling costs associated with overnight stays in the capital.
"John Mulhern of Kerry Airport came to our rescue for the Joe McDonagh Cup final generously offering to fly the team back to Kerry and we are very appreciative of that gesture. With regard to the All-Ireland SFC final, we were very lucky to secure a hotel that would cater for our needs.
"The GAA will have to look at the lack of availability of hotels and the rising cost of accommodation in Dublin during the peak holiday season.”
The Chairman confirmed they have purchased an additional seven acres to expand the facilities at the Centre of Excellence at Currans but revealed that there are problems with the main pitch at the facility which will take it out of commission until the spring of 2024.
Delegates were also informed at the start of the night’s proceedings that David Clifford had been nominated by East Kerry to be the Kerry senior football captain for 2023.

Worrying but not surprising that this county board think that allocating resource to Fitzgerald stadium is a good idea.

Worrying but not surprising that this county board think that allocating resource to Fitzgerald stadium is a good idea. As I said on another thread- what we need to do is develop one 25-30k stadium with decent facilities and then pump money into faculties around the county. The likelihood is that tralee is best placed for this due to its current size and set up. If our county board pumps 72mill or even a fraction of that into a white elephant in Killarney then it will cripple our finances for years. Look at the state of cork after PUC and Munster doesn’t need another stadium that is full once every 2 years

The whole social media scene is like a warzone. Some people completely lose their minds and write any old rubbish without regard about what's right and wrong. It's crazy what people will write

I wonder is this Social Media 'policing' an knee-jerk reaction - ah maybe it doesn't include the Forum and which is grand really.

What are you referring to? Twitter. It's a horrible place Was there something about the convention on there? I try stay away from it as much as possible- it’s a cesspit of whataboutery where people just spend as much time as possible attacking the poster as opposed to discussing the post. That kind of discourse has spilled over into nearly every other form of social media & forum, unfortunately

There is this odd obsession in Dublin with any success that Kerry have. Attempts are consistently made to diminish it, the sarcastic nonsense around calling Clifford the boy wonder, the crap about Shane Walsh being motm in the final or the best in the country, the attempts to create a scandal when there was none there.

ya a video went around whatsapp of the lads chanting "pat the bag" and a couple of lads jumped on it and accused kerry players of taking drugs. complete lies but this is life sadly...
to be honest, proabably he should have just ignored it and players need to learn not to be posting videos or pics on social media either.

What concerts are they gona put on? PUC is the arena in Munster for them. It would be a monumental waste of money, akin to financial suicide. They tried a summerfest in Killarney before - that didn’t stay goin and that was during the boom times so I just don’t see where these extra events are going to come from.

It would be a disaster for Kerry gaa. This project would be a drain on resources for a number of years even if it is mostly funded by others and in an era where money matters when it comes to success, it would represent a colossal waste.

The indoor dome in Connaught cost 3 mill- we could build 24 of them tor the 72 mill.
Imagine even having 5/6 and allowing all our clubs go train on a decent pitch all year round

They will sell this as the most of the money coming from elsewhere but Kerry gaa will have to pony up something for this also and this will come at the expense of better facilities and coaching and ultimately this will impact the quality of players coming through.

Spend €72 million on a venue that is used to capacity by the GAA once every two years at best seems daft in the extreme. I suspect it would be far cheaper to build a new stadium in Currans which is the location the GAA deemed most appropriate for the centre of excellence to be built. Surely the same logic would apply to the stadium. Land values in Killarney are such that the sale of Fitzgerald stadium might finance the cost of a new Currans stadium.
What worried me most was the suggestion that a re-developed Fitzgerald stadium would be a multi purpose venue which automatically means it would not be available for GAA matches. We could see Munster finals returning to Austin Stacks Park if there is a clash of dates. If Killarney wants an outdoor multipurpose venue then off they go and build it (if suitable for GAA it can be rented for the rare occasion a large capacity venue is required) but the GAA's first duty is to the membership of the county at large and not to the town of Killarney.

But what are the other purposes? It will never host a rugby game as Munster will use TP as much as possible due to debt issues and will flick the odd game to PUC. Concerts? Maybe 2/3 a year at a push and Killarney already tried that and it didn’t work during the boom times so I can’t see it working during a possible recession. It won’t host any soccer games as there’s none of note in the area It won’t host any hurling as there are a number of bigger/more suited existing venues. So when viewed logically- it would host every second Munster final, which don’t even sell out at the moment.

A redevelopment of Fitzgerald Stadium is the last thing the GAA in Kerry needs - PUC was Frank Murphy’s vanity project & we see how that ended - let’s not make the same mistake!

72 million for an upgrade. This is absolutely nuts. It must be opposed by all grassroot supporters. In these times of economic hardship it is unbelievable that this would be even considered. 72 million will soon become 100 plus and all for what. A white elephant!! .
