EK is like a county team at this stage. I'd say there's nobody on the starting 15 that hasn't worn the green and gold at some grade recently. Probably not too many on the bench either. Legion or Crokes to add to it next year. Getting out of hand at this stage. Like the U15 and Minor competitions, I envisage you will see an ‘Eoghan Ruà ‘ team entering the competition before too long as, like someone alluded to above, the probability of Legion or even Crokes being at a loose ebb next year will result in East Kerry just having too many clubs to call upon. When you consider the disbanding of Kenmare District or the strength of West Kerry less Dingle, or Brendans less Na Gaeil if they do succeed in their intermediate bid there is a serious inequality or balance there.

one circle I cant quite square! loads saying East Kerry too big, too strong should be split etc yet plenty saying Stacks will beat them!?? Too many clubs squashed into one divisional side means that a lot of good players will not get exposure at county championship level. Stacks might beat them but only as it’s the first match of the championship and stacks are better prepared. If this was a quarter or semi final then EK would win by 6-8 points ah yeah, the likes of Donal O'Sullivan and Paul O'Shea not starting certainly illustrates your point There some interesting solutions worth considering. Firies pitch is as close to Castleisland as it is to Killarney and their neighbours Currow play in the east kerry competitions but championship with St Kierans. Surely Firies is a natural fit for St Kierans?? I know killarney is closer to kilgarvan than Cahirciveen but could Kilgarvan\Tousist fall in with South Kerry. The likes of Donal O'Sullivan Gearoid Fennessy, John Mark Foley would start for South Kerry Donal O'Sullivan for me was the next best forward after David Clifford and Sean O'Shea on the 5 in a row minors. I know he has had a lot of injuries but he needs to be playing senior championship. He is a actually a better hurler than footballer and I am sure the kerry hurling manager will snap him up if Jack doesnt

Listened the the Spa and Legion game on the way to work, it sounded by the commentary that the same Legion player took one of the first five penalties and one of the sudden death?. Surely the commentator got it wrong yes? On a second note, what is the story with Liam Kearney, he is seriously that injury prone…. It was same with both teams, each team nominates 5 players to take the penalties. Even for sudden death it stays with those 5 players.

Scoreline of 1-7 to 1-5 totally flattered East Kerry. David didnt score from play and got a red - 2 yellows near the end. Paudie got 1 pt from play at the death. Stacks backs giving nothing soft.

Good win for Strand Rd vs St Kierans - David Moran dominated the middle, full back line was totally in top & Tommy Walsh was my man of the match - kicked 6 points, 3 from play & 3 marks - Kierans couldn’t cope with him & he was ably assisted by will - o - the wisp Conor Hayes who mined a couple of great scores. St Kierans lacked leaders & their lack of competitive game time showed.

Just home from a wet and miserable ASP - first game gave a deserved and relatively easy win for Rahillys over St Kierans - both sides were hampered by injuries and the lack of preparation for the divisional side was evident. Tommy Walsh was too much for the Kierans defence and Rahillys were solid throughout.
For those bemoaning the lack of a televised stream for the Stacks V EK game be thankful - very poor game of football in wet conditions. Stacks smothered the EK/Clifford threat and played a counter attacking style of football. Two missed goal chances by Stacks kept EK within striking distance despite them only scoring 4 points in he first 53 minutes of the game.

Stacks run the ball constantly out of defense and rarely ( bar some speculative high balls to Donaghy) if ever play first time passes to forwards giving them an opportunity to play in any space it why they Stacks half backs get on the score sheet constantly as they are the overlap runners for most attacks.

I have heard Stephen Moloumohy has already contacted Donal O Sullivan about joining the Kerry hurling panel for 2022, not sure what Donals answer was.
I am sure he has ambitions to play but if he is a sub for East Kerry albeit injured a lot then Jack might overlook him for next years squad anyway.
He is very fast, direct and strong on the ball.

Wow, just checked the score on my lunch break.... did not expect that, ok Stacks are going well so the early club win against a divisional team isn't unheard of but the weak EK score total has me.. anyone there or listen live... what happened? Stacks were hungrier & faster to every ball - their defence, midfield & half forwards suffocated the EK attack and set up many scoring chances for the Rock - poor decisions plus some bad finishing saw Stacks leave behind about 2-4 in the first half alone - they continued to put the squeeze on in the 2nd half & it was the 53rd min before EK registered a score - a point from a free by David Clifford - by that stage EK were down to 14 following the dismissal of corner back Donohue - Stacks were made to sweat at the end following a goal from Paul O ‘Shea and another point but in all truth they should have had this game wrapped up at half time.

Greenbgold35 May i ask, how did the shop window players fair out?
Sherwood, Donoghue, Buckley, Paul O'Shea and O'Sullivan for EK and for Stacks the two islanders, Horan and big Joe O'Connor?

Austin Stacks 1-7 East Kerry 1-5 HT 0-5 0-2
They say only mad dogs and Englishmen go out under the midday sun. I am not sure what categories are supposed to attend a football match on a wild and miserably , wet night . Not mad dogs I suspect , only demented old timers I suppose. With that background , full marks to the footballers who also had to tog off in the open. It wasn't top drawer stuff but one cannot expect that standard in the monsoon conditions that prevailed in the second half especially.
The first thing that needs to be said is that this was no fluke result. The second thing that needs to be said is that the score line flatters East Kerry and Austin Stacks should never have allowed themselves to be facing a near death experience during added on time. They were comfortably ahead in the closing stages of normal time and furthermore they should have been comfortably ahead at half time after playing with a strong wind, rather just three up. Accordingly, their health scare at the end was due to a combination of some poor shooting, some bad luck and a decision to defend their lead when they seemed to be cantering to a decisive victory.
Fiachra Mangan , very industrious on the forty, kicked the two opening points. Then Shane O'Callaghan , tigerishly robbed an East Kerry Kerry defender, got it into KD, who rounded friend and foe and with the empty goal staring him in the face managed, inexplicably, to strike the crossbar. While it was a miss and while it was very early in the game , those early attacks very informative. It told us The Rockies were taking up where they left off against Kenmare. Two time champions or no, several strong clubs to choose from or no, a plethora of stars in their ranks or no , Austin Stacks were hopping off the ground and ferociously hopping off their opponents. In contrast East Kerry were leaden footed and bewildered. I am not sure what they were expecting but it was no night to be resting on laurels already secured. Nowhere were past glories rendered more irrelevant than in area where the Austin Stack backs confronted the East Kerry forwards. Not an inch of space or a second to think was conceded. It is no exaggeration to say that every Rockies back dominated his opponent. That is some achievement when you consider the names that attack included, especially the Clifford boys. In that half, David won one free off Dylan Casey, which was converted by Darragh Roche. He scored another free and dropped a mark short. That was about as much as he was involved in the opening period. Paudie was equally anonymous as were the other forwards. East Kerry forwards got a grand total of two points in that half, albeit against the wind. That tells you all you need to know about the backs from Rock Street. To return to their forwards, they created another movement which almost, should have yielded a goal. A ball was won by KD, who else, he sent it across the goal where Shane O'Callaghan fisted it against the woodwork before eventually being cleared by ? Paul Murphy. KD also kicked a wonderful point in that half. Stacks only three up at half time but rampant.
Jack O'Shea, wearing number four , got the opening point of the second half , made by Joseph O'Connor. It was appropriate they combined for that score because both had marvellous games. Not so long after that Joseph O'Connor made a powerfully incisive run, exchanged passes with ? Fiachra Mangan before finishing it to the net. Good night Irene. Now, Austin Stacks tended to fall back to protect that lead. Nobody fell back more than the last of the Mohicans, KD. He spent a lot of that half in the full back line, breaking East Kerry hearts with timely interventions, just as he teased and tormented and goaded them earlier in the game in his offensive role. Oh, he is a warrior alright. Paudie Clifford cut through for a goal late in the game but was called back for an earlier foul which David converted. Shane Guthrie made a great save from a Jack Sherwood effort. Paudie pointed the resultant 45, having missed an earlier one. As the game was petering out, Paul O'Shea, who came on in the second half , hit an unexpected bullet to the net. This energised East Kerry and unnerved Austin Stacks and when Paudie Clifford flashed over a point one could hear the collective palpitating of Rock Street hearts. The final whistle was a relief for them but as already stated it should never have been that close. Austin Stacks were worthy winners and won far more convincingly than the final score suggests.
As I have mentioned that back line unit of Austin Stacks was as watertight as you would wish your back line to be. I have already singled out Jack O'Shea but it would be remiss of me not to mention Dylan Casey. Just as in the Kenmare match when he submerged Sean O'Shea, today he did likewise to David Clifford. That is a remarkable achievement for a boy who is still only a neophyte. He just has a penchant for latching on like a leech to an opponent without doing too much spectacular. What more do you need from a defender? Indeed he is cocky enough to come forward on occasions as well. Of course nobody can predict at this stage what he will achieve but there is no doubt he will be in with the big boys in 2022 ,if that is his wish.
Greg Horan gave plenty of help to Joseph O'Connor and up front Michael O'Gara and Fiachra Mangan gave most assistance to the leader of the pack, KD.
Brendan Kealy lined out in goal instead of Shane Ryan. It really is difficult to think of any East Kerry player who distinguished himself. Perhaps Pa Warren, Daniel O'Brien and Ronan Buckley to a lesser extent.
They was a certain nastiness which bubbled away all through the match. Perhaps it was the weather, perhaps it was townie/country thing. Either way, Niall O'Donoghue got a straight red and David Clifford got a second yellow , all in the second half. I really do not know the reason for those cards as those incidents took place far away from me . The squally rain did not help my visibility either.
I suppose people will say Austin Stacks may not have won if East Kerry had a few games under their belts. On the evidence of what I saw Austin Stacks do against Kenmare and tonight, I would not bet too heavily on that proposition.

You are right veteran it made no sense especially when Stacks had an extra man for KD to play as an extra full back for all of the last quarter in fact at times it looked like he was playing as a second goalkeeper. It invited EK onto Stacks and resulted in the game being a lot closer than it should have been. The Stacks sideline surely didn’t instruct him to do it and in future should intervene.

This championship is going to be dominated by club teams and we've seen the start of it last night. An average KOR team destroyed an underprepared St Kierans outfit that had no plan other than attempt to drop fellas in front of Tommy Walsh. It was ineffective as there was no pressure out the field on the kicker.East kerry were rudderless, constantly passing latterly because of firstly slow out ball from defence and secondly sweepers by AS. Alot of big names by EK that never showed up and looked a shadow of the team that had the Spa contingency. These divisional team only had roughly a week to prepare as a full unit which isn't fair compared to the club teams playing through the club championship together.

Niall O'Donaghue would want to call himself aside as what he did for his red card was stupid in the extreme, he let his team down big time. Jack O'Shea and Dylan Casey were excellent for stacks, and Joe O'Connor was very good as well, I was disappointed with Mark Ryan again, I saw him for Rathmore a few weeks back and for a man training with the Kerry seniors I expected more. Evan Cronin and Dara Moynihan were a massive loss to East Kerry.

Greenbgold35 May i ask, how did the shop window players fair out? Sherwood, Donoghue, Buckley, Paul O'Shea and O'Sullivan for EK and for Stacks the two islanders, Horan and big Joe O'Connor? Its a night most EK players will want to forget as very few shone out - I thought that Daniel O'Brien and Pa Warren were the pick of the defence but nobody stood out up front with Stacks dominating all the individuals duels. Sherwood was well beaten by Star, O'Donoghue was adequate , Buckley rarely showed whilst neither Paul O'Shea or Donal O'Sullivan started though both were introduced in the 2nd half but apart from O'Shea's goal, neither were prominent - O'Shea didnt enter the fray until the closing minutes though. Brendan O'Sullivan did not play as he had a heavily bandaged right leg but Paul was outstanding completely snuffing out Kevin McCarthy - Greg Horan did a fine job alongside Joe O'Connor who acquitted himself very well. Dylan Casey is certain to be added to the Kerry squad as he again excelled this time on David Clifford but in truth Clifford was starved of possession due to the almost complete dominance of the Stacks half back line.

East Kerry looked like a side that never played together. Those Spa players maybe a bigger factor than we expected. I know they were filled with high quality players but going by last night they looked nothing like they used to be. Great for the championship. A club team to win it for me!

Straight knockout suits the clubs.
They should stick with that format.
If EK had another game in a losers round they would be a different animal from then on.

Could we redraw a few of the east Kerry clubs into at Kieran’s and maybe move a st Kieran’s club or 2 to feale rangers/Shannon rangers?
The hammering feale rangers got yesterday makes them fielding a team almost pointless

I didn’t see this stacks game but I have seen them play a lot over the last few years and I have consistently been saying that they are the coming club in Kerry due to the strength of their underage set up.
I’ve only seen Joe o Connor play a few times but I’ve always been impressed and lads I know rate him a level above Jack Barry so I’d not be surprised to see him heavily involved next year.
On the other players mentioned as playing well: Jack o Shea is a very tenacious defender and I have been impressed by him before but I don’t think he’s at county level.
I think Greg is a tiny bit below county standard aswell but I have always been impressed with how he plays with his head up so the potential might still be there to make up for the lost time caused by his injuries.
I can’t say I know much about Dylan Casey so can’t comment.
On the dirtiness that veteran referenced, stacks have been bringing that ‘edge’ for a few years now and I’ve complained about it on here previously.
There’ll be a lot of grappling off the ball and trash talking but they’ll keep on doing it as long as they get away with it. While I don’t like to see it, it’s up to the rules to police them

If you look at the make up of the underage championship, you have Castleisland district, Eoghan Rue and East Kerry ... it is more evenly balanced.
Then again we were all spouting how "unbeatable" EK were and after round one they are gone.
There is an imbalance when you compare the number if clubs in some divisional sides when one compares Feale Rangers, EK, Mid and South. Then you also have to take into consideration the likes of Tousist and Kilgarvan who initially were division less...

While I don’t like to see it, it’s up to the rules to police them Stacks are only going to get stronger. They have been and are the best team in the county in most age groups. In recent years they’ve had a large number of Kerry minors and that is only going to continue. Add those players coming through to Joe O’Connor, Dylan Casey, Michael O’Gara, Sean Quilter, Armin Heinrich etc. who are already established at Senior level and Stacks should be very strong for years to come. An All Ireland Senior club title is surely their aim.
