I think we need another big man for the middle of the park. Looking at how Dublin moulded Michael Darragh McAuley into the "footballer" that he was I wonder is there room for some outside of the box thinking other than the options given above such as Darragh Lyne, Liam Kearney and so on.
Having watched some of the Kerry hurling games and seen him in action for Ardfert before I wonder would there be a case for trying to poach Fionnan Mackessy and moulding him into doing a job. He's big, strong, a good athlete and would have been in and around one of Jack O Connor minor training squads. I would say similar about Mahony from St Senans/Crotta.
Most of the forwards mentioned above are very samey. Shaw if he can get his injuries sorted is most definitely an option. Donal Sullivan again if his injuries are sorted could be an option in a few years.
I think the need for a dedicated 30 man training squad of "B players" - lads aged from 20-24 who are consistently playing well for the club and most would have played for Kerry minors or Under 20/21s. Some might not be up to it next year or the year after but might be options along the line.

We need to look beyond a 30 man squad, I would think it’s more in the range of 35 to 40, with the latter 5 for the future.
You look at our current panel and beyond 23 players, the others are not at the races to make an impact at inter-county level. The current squad has been left in a poor state IMO, we have a solid 15, yes they need some work, but I think the next manager has a huge challenge in building a squad, a squad that makes our AvB games competitive and gets a team ready for battle, from this year, you can see that was definitely missing.

Mackessy is the same age as Sean oShea.
I think if Tyrone had him he would be moulded into their team now.
He goes back from nothing which is never a bad thing.

How many of those forwards listed above have scored consistently at county championship level? Roche has but he has also missed a load of chances.
I had and still have big hopes for Shaw but he hasnt shown much at county championship level yet.

In addition to those mentioned for midfield I would add Mike Breen & Daniel O’Brien - Breen showed a lot this year & I think O’Brien if fit would be an option around the middle - he has plied his trade as a half back but feel the freedom he would be afforded around the middle could play to his strengths.

With respect i think the question to be asked is: How many of those can be coached to attack as a group, which includes constant movement, and retaining possession till the player in the optimal position to score is given the ball. Such players must also have a strong engine as covering back in defense is part of the job. In other words, we need Paul Galvin and Declan type of players. I think the only forwards we can rely on at the moment are DC, Killian and SOS.

We put too much stock in lads doing well at minor level when the transition is the hardest part and a lot of the names mentioned have done little at county championship level yet

David Shaw needs more games with Kerry One week he’s on the bench then you don’t see him I think if he got games in a system he would be fine He’s strong can score good hands Play full or corner forward or bring him out to midfield as an extra man Play him 2 inside with Clifford

Gavin Curran Jack McGuire Brian Leonard Dylan Casey Dan O’Donoghue Daniel O’Brien Michael Foley Mikey Geaney Sean Horan Barry Mahony Liam Kearney Joe O’Connor Paul O’Shea Kevin O’Sullivan Eddie Horan Jack Savage Evan Cronin Donal O’Sullivan David Shaw Tomas O’Sé
That’s a list of 20 players who I think are possibilities to see league time. The majority of them won’t get it and won’t be good enough to get it but they’re are the names I’ll be looking out for in the county championship with a view to Kerry next year.

A look at the Terrace Talk website, that doesn't seem to be working at the moment, you see countless lads who were stars at minor level and some even fail to make it a U21/20 level. Lads tend to be brought into the senior in their early 20s it doesn;t work out and they're not seen again. A separate issue is lads on the panel who aren't getting game time and are also not playing with their clubs.

Also people talking about Fionnan Mackessy being part of the panel next season. I might be wrong but does he even play football? Afaik he didn't play wtih Ardfert during the week.

I would like to see Shane Murphy from the crokes back in as an option for goalkeeper. Was harshly scapegoated after the Galway Super 8's debacle in 2018. Think he is the nearest thing we have to the likes of Morgan, Beggan etc in terms of ability with kickouts.

The 2018 minors are only 20 now. Listening to some pundits, including Kerry pundits, you'd swear the Minor winning teams are all nearly 30 now and all we've got from them were DC & SOS. The All Ire under 20 championship has been badly disrupted over past 2 seasons so was not the most accurate reflection of what the 2018 crop can do. So lets see what they can do for their respective teams be they college and /or club over the coming seasons.

Patience is required- Tyrone were backboned this year by 5/6 guys who won U-21 in 2015 - it takes time for guys to develop.

We need to ID that mean streak in laddos, ala AO'M, PG, The O'6s, etc. Remember Galvin telling us in his book of his being picked up at was it Ballincloher Cross by a 'match day car', well a 'trial day car' actually, and the auld hoor at the wheel making some comment that his passenger was 'making up the numbers', maybe thinking because this was small-ball territory if nothing else - 'I'll show teach that auld hoor a lesson' was murmured under the breath in response, and as they say the rest is history.
That was the same Cross Roads where PG and his rogueing pals used to play 'Ear To The Ground', pasting gobstoppers at oncoming traffic.
We now need to play that same game and identify the right oncoming traffic, call it The Kerry Ingredient or whatever, we need the right blend.
The Kingdom is oozing of silky skills, we just need to do as any Royal Family do and thicken the blood with a few Commoners - we need to rise the temper in a few more laddos who we previously believed were 'making up the numbers' and where we got it wrong.
We need to get ahead of the curve here, and rekindle that Kerry toughness of old and do it as young as possible. I read lately that kids raised in households that had a dog were less likely to get common infections as they grew up, i.e. was it that they were exposed to minute infection and to which they built up a natural resistance? Less of the cocooning with iPhones and more of the outdoors rolling in the muck back around Ballincloher Cross. Also 'The Gable Ball' ala Tadhgeen and where he says playing with itinerant kids toughened him up - now that's what you'd call nurturing nature and the evidence is undisputed.
Ballythefireside Quote of The Day - Their history is our future

Agree here it can often take players especially defenders a while to get to where they need to be for the highest level like even the great Marc o se struggled his first few years. For me we have gotten a fair few top lads out of the minors o shea,Clifford Tom sull and Diarmuid o connor are as good as anyone in their positions We are short a few things an overall cohesiveness attacking and defending better collectively and most of all a centre back we aren't far off at all , if Clifford doesn't cramp up we beat Tyrone I reckon and id say we would'vebeat mayo they looked average enough in the final. It's fine margins at this level hopefully the new or old management team realise that its not always about having the best footballers but about having whats best for the team overall.

Barry O'Mahony was the North Kerry C'ship stand out player in 2018 and 2019, he was man of the match in both Senan's final wins and his loss through injury cos them early doors in last year's round one.
He has bulked up and playing grest small ball with the county. Question is if push comes to shove, if he was asked to choose Would the Crotta side or the Senans side if him win out.
I hope there is a McGrath Cup next year to to give fringe players a test drive

I’d love if there was a McGrath Cup to try test run something like the following.
Eoghan O’Brien
James McCarthy Stefan Okunbar Tom Leo Sullivan Dan O’Donoghue Mike Breen Dylan Casey
Joe O’Connor Mark Foley
Eddie Horan Paul O’Shea Donal O’Sullivan Tony Brosnan David Shaw Dylan Geaney

Barry Mahony might have a chance under Jack O’Connor in a working wing forward role. Based on Jack’s comments on the Examiner podcast, he’ll go with 2 very hard working wing forwards who can bring a bit of physicality. That could suit Mahony, who’s lacking a bit of size for midfield at Senior Inter County level.

Whosinmidfield, agree, having seen a lot of the Senans lad from U16's up he is a fine baller, can see and execute the right pass, he has something and an above average club player, the big question is where does the Grå lie as one cannot have two masters. Hec will have to choose one code.
He is a fine fine player and could be moulded, he was the perfect partner for Diarmuid in the minor days but mid field is not an option.
I firmly believe Seanie will end up in Mid field with Diarmuid within the next two years.

Sorry to dampen the spirits lads but my sources have it that Barry O Mahony is seriously considering emigration ,he would be a serious loss to Kerry hurling and /or football not to mind his clubs Crotta and St.Senans
