Good game yesterday , that had a bit of everything . Con o Callaghan and David Clifford are masters at their craft . Aged just 25 and 22 respectively , We are lucky to be able to watch them go against each other . Before the game i would of taken a narrow loss and a few players blooded for Dublin. Kerry to me looked further down the road in the fitness stakes v Galway and i always felt this was a game Kerry wanted to put down a marker in, Yet after the game i was disappointed we didn't win, purely because we were ahead going into the dying minutes , but equally at one point in the second half Kerry looked to be coming on strong , so a draw was probably fair result It was a game that when it finished could be spun in either teams favour as a positive result depending on which side you were backing. Dublin for me were sloppy ,slow at times yet created around 7 goal chances . Cluxton in Goal, Dean Rock on frees. Brian Howard and possibly Bugler starting , Fenton back to midfield and a fit Ciaran Kilkenny will no doubt make us a stronger outfit. From a Kerry perspective, the team looked very dangerous on the front foot and David Clifford is a real handful, If Paudie Clifford keeps his form up it will be something extra you didn't have last year. Gavin White also was impressive . All in all yesterday was a good game put on by both sets of players considering the long lay off by everyone. Great to have Gaelic football and Hurling back .

What about David at Full Back? Clifford? Prefer him in the FF line myself 😉

What about David at Full Back? In fairness I think that would be cruel to David. If he is struggling for gears midfield then fullback would be a whole lot worse. The days of big strong slow full backs contesting long deliveries is long gone I am afraid. Now you have to be strong but extremely mobile and quick to turn also.

A dandy footballer can play anywhere as wan Eddie Dowling said of Tadhgeen an dá thaobh Conghaile, Star was reinvented at FF and DC and DM are dandy durable.
FB, if you're good enough you're .. well .. seriously?
Take DM, never played there and not a position for experiments v FF, delivery suspect when tired, fielder yes, way he ever tried there? He'd he 90% a natural FB but the 10% is the worry!
Ah Clifford, yes he could, and Star as a FF saved us v Mayo, madness though if only because it is exactly why Rebels bate us last year!
Positions less significant today and players are durable, though v Rebels last year we got a lesson!
Put DC at FF on DM at FB in Currans with the rest of the CFs loitering and see how it goes!

Great fare in Thurles and absolutely brilliant to have it back again.
Kerry have no chance of an All Ireland if Clifford picks up an injury. And I mean no chance. Dublin have a much better spread of talent that means an injury to one of their main men can be more easily absorbed.
Although it wasn't like Dublin to not finish off Kerry when they got 7 in front I think they will be much sharper and fitter come later stages of Championship.
Kerry finished very strongly and looked very fit. Hard to know exactly where both teams are on the fitness measurement but Dublin looked a fair bit behind. Which probably ties into the reasoning as to why Dublin couldn't put Kerry away. And to be fair Kerry fought every step of the way.
Lastly, really surprised with the level of vitriol here against the keep ball tactic. You should be genuflecting and giving up prayers that this tactic was what finally finished off the blanket. Exhibit 1, the semi final of 2018 v Tyrone. Tyrone were picked apart. This tactic has led to some magical plays, Con v Mayo in 2019 semi, and an exact replica last Sunday between Kilkenny and Con. And btw it kept Dublin in it in the 2019 drawn game when we were hanging on by our fingernails in the last 10 mins with 14 men. And who created the chances in the last 10 mins of that game despite being a man short? If Kerry wanted the ball last Sunday there was nothing to stop them coming out and trying to get it. The blanket is dead because of Dublin. Or close to death at least! And we are boring. Wow!

In fairness Dublins first goal was from a keep ball exercise where they moved it along both wings a couple of times before taking it into the corner and then passing a ball into space. Dublin are masters of clearing out the scoring zone in those situations and hats off to them. Maybe have a rule that if you are inside the oppositions 45 you can't go back beyond your own 65 then. That would allow the other team to put on a more aggressive press and would stop teams kicking it back to the keeper who is standing on the 21.

Why do some people get upset when someone questions the playing style of their team? That keep ball while effective is boring its like eatching a handpassing drill over and over mind numbing.
We were all quick to acknowledge here that the way kerry played and setup against cork was an abomination and bordered on sacrilege to the ideals of kerry football! It's not a personal attack on the players and management of dublin its just pure torture to watch!

Absolute madness to be even entertaining the notion of DM as a full back. He is caught for pace as it is out around the middle amongst the big men not to mind pitting him against a lad with the movement of Con or Kilkenny. Added to that is he has a tendency to make poor decisions and take way to much out of the ball.

Hard to know with goalies its a funny one often the 2nd best goalie in a county wont commit unless they think it's realistic to oust the incumbent or like cluxton are (surely) nearly finished. You never know who might refuse a call up etc. This is true. One thing abuot the 5 in a row minor teams, bar Share Ryan, there was no stand out keeper. Billy Courtney in 2015-16 was an outfield player, Deividas Uosis looked to be a good option but he's now gone by the looks of it. Brian Lonergan is he an option? With the junior championship now gone it's quite hard to give younger keepers a chance to see what they can do imo.

Kicking and handpassing the ball over and back for the final 6 or 7 minutes holding on to a lead is boring (Amounts to roughly 10% of the game!). The same way in soccer, it was boring if a team was a goal up with 20 minutes to go they would continually pass it back to the goalkeeper until 1992. Nobody is questioning its effectiveness, Sunday was one of the few days it was caught out in the last 5 years. Like nobody was questioning the effectiveness of Mickey Harte's style in the noughties. But nothing wrong with highlighting the fact it doesn't make for attractive viewing is there?

I would agree it would probably be a bit more beneficial for him to be allowed play the u20 championship. Not to mention the brilliant asset he is to that team. That will also be finishing up around august if they manage to end the drought and go all the way. So, he would still be in the picture for the later end of the senior championship. The way I see it will be got valuable minutes this year for the seniors probably not just abit young yet. Will he be probably the key asset to the u20 squad absolutely.

I'd use Moran at full forward before full back. He'd get the mark and have Clifford run off him. Na Gaeil midfield needs to be built on for the future starting with Roscommon.

But nothing wrong with highlighting the fact it doesn't make for attractive viewing is there? Agreed, but it's a hell of a lot better to look at than the blanket. the 2011 semi final between Donegal and Dublin was an abomination of a game. This was because one team played 14 behind the ball and the other refused to push forward defenders because that is what the other team wanted. So it was close enough to unwatchable, although fascinating in another sense. To my eyes, 2 teams keeping possession and probing for openings without hoofing it inside is a lot more attractive. An element of tactical sophistication about it. Kerry on Sunday let Dublin have the ball for large periods, if they really wanted the ball back they could have come out and looked for it, but of course that would have played into Dublin's hands. Which is why they didn't come looking for it too hard. What this league has shown so far, and I appreciate it's a small sample size, is that the blanket style is pretty much dead, and attacking play is on the way back, albeit in a variety of styles. That has to be good news for everyone.

When people on the Forum suggest experimenting with David Moran at full back it tells me they either have inferior powers of recall than my own or are too young to remember.
There was a man called Jacko , who in his twilight years , was nominated to replace the retired Sean Walsh at fulllback. Down cams to town with Mickey Linden at his peak at full forward. I will skip the gory details and just say that few full backs had as short a reign as Jacko. In previous years he had been alright at midfield though!
On the evidence of the u20 game against Cork last year Paul Walsh is a good distance away from consideration for senior duty. Is he u20 this year ? In any case it is defensive options we seek.
Surely even some Dublin supporters realise that the type of cross field nonsense they occasionally engaged in last Sunday will drive away neutral interest in football. They might argue that it is effective. That is a short term view. If attendance figures and TV viewing figures dwindle , as assuredly they will if the public continue to be exposed to this drivel, how interested will sponsors be if their research shows that interest in football is waning? The bottom line is what matters to those people.
In case contributors to this forum from outside Kerry claim , but Kerry are capable of doing the same thing, I reply guilty as charged , although not to the same extent. However, if you closely monitor this Forum it should be obvious that when Kerry do indulge in this nonsense they are excoriated by most contributors here and will continue to be excoriated whenever they repeat this tactic , by me at least. From my own standpoint, if Kerry were not involved last Sunday I would have switched over to racing from the Curragh.
What is the future of our game when you ally what we saw at times last Sunday with some of the inane rules that have recently been imposed on us. Bleak is the outlook I suggest.

Dublin are an excellent side with a number of excellent individuals - Cluxton, McCarthy, Fenton, Kilkenny and Con - leading them to unparalleled success. The most successful team in GAA history for sure but not the greatest in my eyes in either code.
They have become like a franchise this past few years, metronomic and mechanical in the way they play, individuality curbed in favour of the conservative, no risks encouraged or tolerated in a win at all costs environment.
Owing to natural resources - numbers - I see them winning a majority of All Irelands for the next decade but it would be great if they did so with a brand of football that was something other than the joyless brand they currently espouse. The semi circle defence of 12 to 14 players is being aped by every team in the country as rugby league and basketball have become the preserve of the many with catching and kicking the preserve of the few.

Dublin, a team I would have a very high regard for, bore me to tears.
Furthermore some of their most effective players are not that stylish.
Kilkenny's kicking while effective is not pretty to watch.
And while Con is devastating I wouldn't exactly be looking up his YouTube highlights like I would, say, a Stephen O'Neill.
Honourable exceptions here are Fenton and Howard. I could watch Howard all day.

You could argue the same with Con Callaghan because Dublin losing Mannion is monumental in my opinion. Kilkenny,Rock,Costello will chip in with a few scores but so I certainly dont think Dublin have near the strength in depth that they once had.

I do think he’s the best midfielder around at the moment although that’s helped by the lack of any other strong candidates. In tight games I find he can be invisible. From that Dublin team I definitely think Kilkenny and O’Callaghan are better than him. I’d be interested to see how others here would rate him.

He was unlucky last year missing the All Ireland semi with the 20 cause of the covid breakout within the camp and was unlucky to be the back up for Shane Ryan with East Kerry. Having seen him play with his own club and with Kerry and east Kerry at minor and u20 level he has the potential to challenge Ryan in goals next year for me.

I'll put it this way, if Kerry had Fenton and Dublin didn't then Kerry would have won in 2015 & 2016. He's a great player and to suggest otherwise is like Dubs saying that Clifford or Seanie Se are overrated.

It’ll be interesting to see who starts for the 20s this year.
